Christmas already Where has the year gone

As the saying goes ldquoTime flies when your having funrdquo and this past year has been both busy and fun The band has had a pretty full calendar of performances and I thank all members for their enthusiasm and commitment over the year

Probably the highlight of the year was the bandrsquos performance at th Sydney Opera House All members worked very hard to get it right and the performance raised the band to a new height All the feedback we received was very positive and I must thank Murray for the huge amount of work he did to get us to that point as well as his encouragement and expertise to help us become better musicians A huge thank you goes to the committee for the work they have done to support the band In particular thank you to Wendy our Fundraising Officer for all the work she has done in both raising funds for band activities and for also co-ordinating the Training Band which kicked off in August Thank you to all those who have given up their timer to be tutors for the training band

The Intermediate Band continues to improve and we are grateful to Cheryl as our conductor Thank you Cheryl for all your hard work and the time you spend photocopying and looking after the finances

As we come to the end of the year we look forward to the trip to Crookwell and the other gigs that we will do in the new year Thank you all again for your commitment

May I wish all of you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Keep safe have a refreshing break and I look forward to making music with you all next year

Wow it seems like only yesterday I was writing up the crotchets for 2010 And now here we are again This year has seen substantial change in the membership of our happy clan with the arrival of a number of local players who just want to have a place to play and enjoy some musical fellowship and its great to see them fit in and boost our numbers We have also unfortunately lost several of our older team to a variety of illness and retirements and they shall be sadly missed but there will always be a spot ready for them to step back into our bandThe strong Aussie dollar meant that many of our players were able to travel internationally during the middle of the year and that led to some interesting performances as some of those players were our stalwarts and without them some unexpected gaps opened up but these were quickly covered by the willingness of players to double instruments and play cues and the general goodwill of the band however we would like these wandering minstrels back as soon as possibleAs far as performances go we played a number of them throughout the year in a number of different locales but for my mind the performance at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall was the highlight Not only because we got to strut our stuff on a world class stage but because of the amount of dedicated rehearsal that went into the performance and the fellowship that developed between players from Camden and Macarthur that allowed us to give a first class performance To me it was a great privilege to conduct such a fine group and to make music together We certainly proved that we can rise to any occasion with grace and flairLooking forward to the new year we have already pencilled in some performance dates and as these firm up they will be appearing on our website while I am thinking of it please use the website as much as possible we like having photos of performances up there to be seen but this is also the spot where all the latest information will go as well so its well worth a look on a regular basis And thank you Lyndell for your tireless work to keep it up to date Crookwell should be an interesting weekend where we can take the band away as a unit play some music and have a load of fun at the same time make sure you keep that weekend freeI know its traditional to conclude by thanking the players the committee the ball boys and everyone but the reality is everyone who is part of our band plays an important role and deserves some credit the players who turn up all the time the committee who work so hard to ensure we have sponsors funds and a place to play but also the unsung supporters of the band the partners kids and friends who come along and listen or allow us to do our thing without them we may not be the happy group that we are so hellipTHANK YOUSpecial mention must go to Cheryl who constantly amazes me with her ability to be ahead of the job every time the committee and to our wonderful sponsorsHave a wonderful Christmas and lets ramp it up a notch in the new yearCheers

Training Band 2011

The Training Band began in mid August with 2 adult and 12 school age learners Over the first few months as members settled in some people left and three changed instruments

Currently the Training Band has two flautists Tameka and Kristal trumpeters Brady and Albert three enthusiastic guitarists Haley Nathan and Justin Christiane is playing clarinet and Tasman and Crystelle make up the percussion section Thanks to Hak and Ruth from the Intermediate Band for making up a bass end section Jim has also been coming along to support the clarinets

Training Band members have learned all about their instruments the fingering and position on the staff of 6 notes and some elementary music theory During 4th term members have played together as a band initially with Lawrie as conductor and now with Cheryl

This Training Band would not have been possible without the input of numerous tutors and organizers A big thank you to our tutors Geoff and Dave Hndash trumpet Lawrie and Jill- clarinets Lyndell- trombone Cheryl- percussion John H guitars Unfortunately our flutes have been without a regular tutor Kris Murray Jill Wendy and even Lyndellrsquos friend Rebecca stepped in to help which is very much appreciated Special thanks must also go to Wendy for her terrific organizational skills in getting the Training Band up and running

This group of learners is enthusiastic keen to improve and bonding into a really good team who obviously enjoy making music together

Well done Training Band members and all those who have made the 2011 Training Band possible

Tips for All Musicians

1 Regular maintenance and cleaning of your instrument will ensure it performs every time you do clean the mouthpiece oil the valves and tension the skins regularly

2 Posture is important use a straight spine and hold the instrument correctly to ensure to best possible outcome

3 Make sure your music stand is adjusted to the correct height this allows you to sit properly and to watch the conductor easily

4 Keyboardists and percussionists need to breathe in at the same time as the wind players this helps you make the correct entries and feel the flow of air the same way the wind players do

5 Practice long soft notes and smooth playing as part of your warm up routine this will assist you in developing a clear tone and control of the instrument

6 Listen to the ensemble when you are playing remember one ear for yourself and one ear on the ensemble try to hear where your part fits

7 Your role as a musician is to add to the overall sound not overtake it Make sure you fit your sound into the sound of the person next to you

8 Dont rely on an electronic tuner all these prove is that you can play the same note as they do they dont necessarily reflect the actual pitch of the ensemble use them as a general guide only

9 When playing pauses (Fermatas) pay close attention to the conductor you will know when to stop or when to keep the phrase moving

10Keep your feet flat on the floor when playing tapping your foot will make you to keep in time will often distract others and if you arent exactly in the same time as the conductor you may end up being lost

11When sight reading get a road map before you start look for Sharps and flats in the key signature Time and tempo changes Accidentals Rhythms Signs and Symbolshellipreach for the STARS each time

12Scales may be boring but practiced slowly they improve your tone and played rapidly they improve your technique in a given key

13Dont practice at home Pick your instrument up and PERFORM every day Give it your best effort each time you pick the instrument up

14Improvise regularly during your home performance time play short phrases that interest you this helps your dexterity and makes composition easy

15Dont be a hero Most players strive to play the first part because its the glamorous part but often the second and third parts contain harder music and require more attention to detail

16Sub-divide the beat count not 1234 but 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and this will assist you in placing quavers and semi quavers correctly particularly in slow tempos

17Use dynamics effectively Dynamics help create tension and release in music this makes the music much more interesting

18When you breathe in feel your kidney region expand and your back open up this means you are getting plenty of air in before you start using it and that your muscles are also stretching and absorbing oxygen

19Work as a team each person needs to belong and work for a common goal a band of 10 good team players will always sound better than a group of super stars

20Listen to high quality performers who also play your instrument listen to a range of styles and performances and aim to emulate their performance

Conductors Crotchets

Training Band 2011
