Connecting to Music Fans with Facebook

The Opportunity

If you are a music artist or a band, Facebook can help you connect with current fans

and grow your fan base quickly and easily.

• Over 400 million global users are active on Facebook every month

• One-third of Facebook users are a fan of at least one music artist or band Page

• Average user becomes a fan of 4 Pages each month

The following guide provides an overview and practical tips for bands and artists

interested in using Facebook. Links are featured throughout the guide to help explore

a specific feature or product. A list of online resources is included at the end of the

guide to keep you connected to the latest from Facebook.

On Facebook: Getting Started is Easy

The first step to connecting with fans is to create your band’s official presence via a

Facebook Page. Pages are a free product for organizations, public figures and bands

to connect with fans in an official, public manner. You can create and maintain a Facebook

Page for your band from your personal account. If you don’t have a Page yet, please consult

our detailed Pages Manual to get step-by-step instructions to create yours.

Facebook Pages Manual offers step-by-step instructions to create a Page in minutes. Download it at facebook.com/influencers under “Resources”.

Tips to Help You Connect

Once you’ve set up your band or artist Page, check out the

following tips and examples to create an optimal experience

for fans to connect with your band.

1. Be Personal, Not Promotional

People become fans of bands on Facebook because they love the music and want

to connect to the true band members. Whenever possible, share updates directly

from the artist or band.

• Use a first person vs. third person voice to show fans you are active on the page

and encourage them to post feedback and comments. See example below.

• Share everyday stories to bring fans closer to you: a tough day traveling, a fun

outing with friends or family, etc.

Bon Jovi Jon Bon Jovi posts authentic updates directly to fans and shares his excitement about the current tour.

Tip #1: Be Personal, Not Promotional

2. Create Content Worth Sharing

Sharing behind-the-scenes updates and content gives fans a feeling of exclusivity by

being connected to their favorite band on Facebook. Photos, Video and other content

can go viral quickly as they attract more “like” and “comment” interactions, which then

spread to friends of fans, attracting new fans. For instance, bands can:

• Upload candid photos of you and other band members at rehearsal, on the road or even

just relaxing to give fans a day in the life.

• Share a new song via the Music Player Application and ask fans to comment and post

to their own profiles to share with friends.

• Encourage fans to take photos and videos from your concerts and upload them to

Fan Albums on your page. See example below.

Tips to Help You Connect

Lenny Kravitz Lenny Kravitz took photos of fans from the stage and asked them to tag themselves, setting off a viral chain after every concert.

3. Join the Conversation

Facebook is a culture of conversations—bands have a great opportunity to get

immediate feedback on a new album or tour. Here are some tips to starting the

conversation on your Page.

• Ask fans a question now and then in your status update, instead of only posting

statements about your activities, the new album or tour announcement.

See example below.

• Show you’re listening by making a comment among the other fan posts.

• Re-post or highlight previous fan content you find interesting, such as a fan’s

tattoo of your band logo.

4. Use Tools to Increase Relevance

Facebook Pages offer great tools to help you get closer to fans.

• Target your updates geographically when you have tour news to share and let fans

know the gig in their area is important to you.

• Review Page Insights to see where fans are from and discover new cities for your

next tour.

• Give fans a taste of life on the road by posting mobile updates with photos and

videos directly from your phone to your Page. See example below.

Tips to Help You Connect

Slash Slash uses SMS to update his fans.

Perry Farrell Perry Farrell asks fans for shopping tips in Brisbane before he headed on tour with Jane’s Addiction.

Grow Your Connections

Once you’ve created optimal content and updates on your

Page, here are some tips for promoting your Page to grow

your audience.

• Promote the Username for your band page everywhere: at every concert, email lists,

fan clubs, print/broadcast/outdoor advertising, newsletters and more.

• Add a Like Box to your band’s website so visitors can instantly connect to your Page

without leaving your site. See example below.

• Encourage fans to add a Like Badge to their blog or website to show their connection

to your band on Facebook. See example below.

• Run Facebook Ads targeted to fans of similar bands or in an upcoming tour city to

convert them as fans.

Make your site social

Now you can connect with your fans across the web, with

Facebook social plugins. Using these powerful tools, you can

create social and personalized experiences on your website.

Below are a few key tools to consider adding to your site. Like Button: The Like button lets users share pages from your site back to their

Facebook profile with one click. See example below.

Recommendations: The Recommendations plugin gives users personalized suggestions

for pages on your site they might like.

Activity Feed: The Activity Feed plugin shows users what their friends are doing on

your site through likes and comments.

Discover all of Facebook’s social plugins here and explore the easy ways to add Facebook

to your site.

Like Button Example

Pandora Pandora gives users the ability to like artists’ bios, and see which friends have liked it too. This approach would translate well for any public figure.
