Calves Re-distribution Report Livestock project

Back groud

Livestock being the main component for the livelihood of rural communities in most parts of

Sindh, SRSO in partnership with Government of Sindh initiated a project which based on

Enterprise Development through livestock. This project is to promote livestock and dairy sector

on the basis of cooperative business model with women being the main beneficiaries of the said

intervention, this component seeks to assist the poor women as milk producer to rehabilitate

them and make them viable entrepreneurs

This project is designed to execute through the platform of LSO. Therefore LSO has to identify

poor women who deserves to receive livestock support and whom they feel is responsible

enough having basic knowledge of livestock rearing. Training for best practices in livestock

management and veterinary services is also main part of the proposed intervention. In this

regard two years prior total 519 calves were given to 262 beneficiaries. And the criteria for

awarding a pair of calves to each beneficiary was, PSC of the beneficiary must not be above

then 18, Widows and have capacity and knowledge of rearing calves.

According to the survey due to the extreme hot weather and HS outbreak (livestock disease)

289 calves expired. At present the current status of calves is 96 live single and 67 live pairs.

These living calves are in better condition, except few.

It was in SoP that after two years one calf from each pair of the beneficiary would be collected

and would be re-distributed among other poor women from that LSO. In this regard Madam

CEO, decided to collect one calf from each pair on immediate basis as it could be re-distributed

among other poor women.

Dozens of continuous meetings and dialogue were conducted by Livestock focal person with

beneficiaries, for collection of one calf from the pair. They were motivated to give one calve

from the pair to the LSO. Initially there was cry from community, particularly from those who

were to give back one calf. They were of the view “we have cared calves like our children for

two years, in this time it is very difficult for us to hand our one calf to other”. But SOs

motivates them for collective good. And finally they were agreed and delivered one calf from

each pair. Those calves were collected at one place, and re-tagged for re distribution. They

have co-operated us for making this project successful. And we got success by re-distributing

calves in same LSO. It could be hoped SRSO will continue this chain.

A. Program Agenda:

To collect one calf from those beneficiaries whose pair is alive and Re-Distribute Calves

among new and among those whose pair was expired.

C. Proceedings of the Program

Program was formally started with Tilwat-e-Quran Pak. Then LSO chairperson briefed SRSO

officials regarding activities and achievements of LSO Wada Machhyoon.

She was followed by District Profile by Mr. Asad Ali Jatoi. He warmly welcomed Chief

Operating Officer, Regional Manager and communities in the program. He also bid thanks to

those women who obeyed SoPs and legal documents and voluntarily hand over one calf from

their pair. He told that “it is start of our success, because we are able to re-distribute calves in

new members and increase the chain”. And it is beyond doubt, SRSO served and played it role

for alleviating extreme poverty and extended its continuous support to the vulnerable women

from rural society.

Then Mr. Niaz Ahmed Hingoro Regional Manager East Region shared his view with

community. He placed his focus on very important thing that “what-ever were reasons for

expiry / missing of calves in first phase but this should not be done in future”. Moreover he

encouraged women as they could support each other and also support UCBPRP team in

recovery of CIF.

Manager Livestock and insurance and livestock Mr. Rashid Bhatti, during briefing also placed

his focus on proper care and continuity of this chain. He told “I am very happy because we

successfully re-distributing calves in the same LSO, and I could be hoped that we will get better

results in future”.

Finally, Mr. Mukhtiar Ali Talpur, Chief Operating Officer SRSO talked with community. He

appreciated and encouraged executive body of LSO wada Machhyoon, and appreciated

UCBPRP Khairpur team for organization this program. He seems very satisfied with the

performance of district team. He told to the community that “it is the only UC/ LSO in

Khairpur district where SRSO had started livestock project and benefited 262 households.”

Mr. Chief Operating Officer told to the community that “success of any project/ program

based on you, if you are organized, you are unified and dedicated than success is sure”. He also

make it sure that SRSO will continue its support for empowerment of vulnerable women. And

SRSO is dedicated to alleviate poverty and other social problems of Society. In the end he hoped

for the continuity of this chain.

Chief Operating Officer Mr. Mir Mukhtiar Talpur and Mr Niaz Ahmed Hingoro awarded

calves certificate to 67 poor women from LSO wada machhyoon. And in that certificate

complete detail of beneficiary was mentioned, besides calf tag no. was also mentioned in

certificate.

Calves were distributed very transparently, all beneficiaries accepted calves with great passion

to rear and grow their respective calf. But only five women denied accepting calves, because

those five calves were not healthy as compared to other sixty two calves. There was no chance

of choice or favoritism because calves were randomly tagged and tags were wrote on the

certificate impartially.

It was incredible; team has put all its efforts to make this project and program successful. With

their motivational and proper dialogue they have collected calves for re-distribution. Calves

distributed among 67 poor women.
