What is Diversity?

Diversity is defined as the condition of having or being composed of differing elements ; especially: the inclusion of different types of people in a group or organization.

Diversity is not only about a difference of race, religion, gender, color, age or nationality; is a lot more than that.

It encompasses sexual preferences, socio-economic factors, education, unique abilities and skills, disabilities, even being an extrovert or introvert.

What qualities make you as a person?

How are you different from the next person?

How are you similar to the next person?

Decision Making

Top executives create a company culture around values such as diversity and influence how individuals make decisions.

Ethical issues arise when managers deviate from organizational values and make decisions that do not respect or reflect diversity.

Executives must consider the impact of their decisions and how they affect the perception of the diverse individuals that make up a team.

Group Progress

A factor that slows the progression of a group is the failure for others to accept one another for what they are.

Diversity is essential for transforming weak areas into strong areas, failing to accept the diversity of others keeps the group from achieving the team goals, thus deteriorating the commitment to collaborate.

Diversity is what builds teams – a collection of experiences, backgrounds, and cultures that can view problems and challenges from a variety of individuals.
