Hi there, my name is Junior! I'm a special guy looking for a

special home. Make sure you've done your research about

my breed, I can become protective of those I bond to. All

the noise and commotion that often comes with kids is a

bit overwhelming for me; older teenagers or adults are

more my demographic. Have an alarm system? No worries!

I will always make sure you know someone is at the door, I

hope you like the sound of my voice! The care free attitude

that comes with o-leash parks aren't really my thing, so a

great big backyard would be the best! Life can be scary. I

am excited to attend "Fearful Fido" with you, so it's a bit

less scary. Don't let my age deter you, I'm still as spunky as

can be! Xoxo Junior

Dear Working Wise:My painting company is growing and so I’m considering hiring my niece to work with me this summer. Are there any issues with hiring a 15-year-old to paint houses? Signed Concerned Contractor

Dear Working Wise:

Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise

Dear Concerned:

Young workers are covered by the same employment standards, e.g., holiday pay and minimum wage, as other workers, but there are some special rules employers should know when it comes to employing people under the age of 18.

The restrictions for young workers involve hours of work and supervision. To learn more, visit http://work.alberta.ca/es and click on the Employees Under Age 18 fact sheet or call the Alberta Employment Standards helpline at 1-877-427-3731.

There are no Employment Standards against hiring a 15-year-old to paint houses—young workers, aged 15-17, can work at any type of job (other than serving alcohol).

Retail store, gas station and hotel employees aged 15-17 must be in the continuous presence of an adult if they are working between 9 p.m. and midnight. And, they are not allowed to work at all between midnight and 6 a.m.

Young workers employed outside those industries may work between midnight and 6 a.m. only if their parent given written consent and they are under the continuous supervision of at least one adult.

Adolescent Albertans, aged 12-14, can work in the following approved jobs:- oce messenger or clerk;- delivery person (e.g., yers, owers);- retail store clerk (e.g., music store); and- certain jobs in the restaurant and food-service industry, with restrictions.

Adolescents may host/hostess, cashier, wash dishes, bus tables, wait tables, provide customer service, assemble orders and clean. But, they can not accept work that may harm their life, health, education or welfare. For these reasons, adolescents can not:- sell liquor in licensed premises;- work between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.;- work during normal school hours;- work without continuous adult supervision;- work for longer than two hours on a school day; - work for longer than eight hours on a non-school day; or- use or work near dangerous equipment such as deep fryers, grills or slicers.

Adolescents may be able to take on other jobs, but the employer must rst apply for a Permit to Employ an Adolescent through http://work.alberta.ca/es. Employers and parents are responsible for ensuring that adolescents are competent and safe. Parents must give the employer written consent before employment begins.

Employers are required by the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code to keep young workers safe by:- completing a written hazard assessment; - controlling or eliminating all safety hazards;- ensuring the health and safety of the employee; and- warning the adolescent about any hazards that may aect him or her.

For tips on keeping younger workers safe at work, visit http://work.alberta.ca/ohs and click on Young Workers.

Good luck!
