Last night we celebrated a night of Dance, Drama, Music and Art at our annual CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) night. The audience were thoroughly entertained throughout the 1 ½ hours. We also had an opportunity to enjoy a range or art work produced by our students as we entered the hall. Well done to all the students who contributed either on-stage or backstage. Of course these events do not happen without a huge amount of work, effort and dedication by staff. Congratulations to the CAPA staff on an outstanding event. A special thank you to Fiona Jensen and to Wayne Brennan – they have worked extremely hard for this and should be proud of the students. Also a huge thank you to the numerous staff preparing students for their performances, helping out backstage and in supporting this event, a particular thank you to James Pike and Matt Goddard – a job really well done. Our students have also been able to experience a broad range of opportunities and experiences in the past two weeks including the Golden Bean Coffee Conference and an informative talk by Jason from the Mid- North Coast Correctional Services Department. Congratulations to those students that were recognised at the North Coast Sports Awards at Ballina and to Emily McKenzie on being selected to represent Australia as a member of the 17 Years Girls Futsal Team. Please remember that on Thursday 8th of December we will be holding our 2016 Presentation Night. All are welcome to help us celebrate the many successes of our students during the past 12 months. The night starts at 7 pm. Normal classes will continue right through until Friday 16th December so please remember that we expect all students to be present every day and every lesson. On the morning of Thursday 8th December the NSW Teachers Federation have requested that all members attend a meeting to discuss current wage claims. This will cause some disruption to first period on this day, however, there will be minimal supervision provided for students until 10 am at which point normal classes will begin from Period 2 onwards. If possible please arrange for your child to be at school ready for the start of Period 2 on this day. The 2016 Golden Bean coffee roasting competition and conference was held at Rydges Port

Macquarie over three days in the middle of November. Peak Coffee approached Hospitality

teaching staff to source students to assist with the smooth running of the event. Over the three

days, twelve Year 12 Hospitality students served over 1200 cups of a variety of different types

of coffee to judges to critique. The crew where responsible for organising beans to be ground,

brewed, filtered and tasted, serving palate cleansing beverages and food items and ensuring

that the coffee’s successfully made it to the tables in prime condition. Organisers were

impressed by the level of professionalism and initiative utilised by the students. I would like to

thank Brittnee , Katie , Georgia , Sean , Brooklyn , Zeeanna , Melissa , Sasha , Jessica ,

Rose , Tarnay and Monica for representing our school in assisting with this international

competition.

Early this week, Jamie Donovan very

generously gave his time to speak

with 8L about Aboriginal history and

the Biripi nation. Students were

informed of the purpose of the

school's Yarning Circle and learnt

about significant conflicts that

occurred in the local area. It was

particularly pleasing to see the

positive engagement and

responsiveness of students to this

unique learning experience.

Emily makes the Australian Futsal Team

At the National Futsal Championships held in

Brisbane in September Emily McKenzie was

selected in the Australian team.

The Australian team will travel to play at the USA

Nationals in July 2017.

Emily played in the last national futsal

championships in Brisbane as under 15s in 2015.

She finished one point short of making the finals.

This year the team, which consisted of a number

of girls playing above their age grade, played all

the way to the grand final, finishing the tournament

runners up to NSW City North. The Far North

NSW team were the only side to give the city

team, a sports academy side, a tough challenge at

the championships.

Of the nine teams at the nationals, 12 players were selected to the Australian 17

Girls Futsal team. Emily plays for the Camden Haven Redbacks during the regular

football season.

Congratulations Emily, an amazing effort!

On Monday this week Wauchope High School had a visit from Jason Hodges, Principal Corrections Officer

at Mid-North Coast Correctional Centre. Jason spoke to the HSC Legal Studies, and Year 9 Crime and Punishment classes about what happens, and, his role at the Gaol.

Students were regaled with stories about the dark side of life and what happens in the Gaol. Prohibited items were shown and some volunteers were introduced to the restraining

devises (see photos).

Contrary to popular belief Jason loves the job and being able to help people who take a wrong turn in the journey of life. Some students are now considering Corrections as a career; however, others thought that gaol sounded a scary place.

Mr Houlahan was surprised to learn that Jason does not watch “Orange is the New Black” or “Prison Break”, two of his favourite shows and source of knowledge of prison life.

Corrective Services Visit

Congratulations Ashleigh Stafford, runner up in the

Rotary Public Speaking Competition, she is now off

to the Regional final

Good Luck Ashleigh!!
