Happy New Year!
I am so excited that we are starting off 2018 with this production of You Can’t Take It With You. I have had the pleasure to see the show several times over the years and I am always thoroughly entertained by the classic script. Also, like many people in the theatre, I have a personal connection to this play as I played Mr. Kirby in my high school’s production many years ago. I am especially excited that I was able to bring in Davis Shakespeare Ensemble’s Artistic Director (and my good friend) Rob Salas to direct this production.
We are always busy here a SCT. I hope you followed along on Facebook as we announced our 2018-2019 Season during the first week of January. We are thrilled that we will be producing Hair, Annie, The Comedy of Tenors, Ripcord, and Nice Work If You Can Get It. Like this season, our 68th season will have something for everyone.
Of course, this season is not over yet. We still have two great shows left this season. In April, I have the pleasure to direct Dead Man’s Cell Phone. I am looking forward to that in particular because it is a bit of a departure for us here at SCT. It is modern, quirky, hysterical, and a little bit dark. We then close the season with one funny and poignant musical comedy, Company. Company is one of my favorite scores of all time. I can’t wait to get to hear our actors perform that music!
I’m sure you can tell that I am pretty amped up for all of the things to come. But, first things first, sit back, relax, get ready to laugh and enjoy You Can’t Take It With You!

Welcome to the lively Vanderhof family home in New York City, 1936!
In a sprawling metropolis becoming ever more industrial, this house is a kind of oasis for Martin Vanderhof and his family of zany characters.
The holidays are a time that most of us make time to spend with family. This season has also been a great time to engage with this play. For me, visiting family allows for a moment of reflection on life. Sometimes it serves as a staggering reminder that no matter how much I may try to reinvent myself, at heart I am still the same person I have always been. Home has a cunning way of serving up this reminder.
Alice Sycamore is in the same position here, desperately trying to define herself in her world away from family, yet she is still relegated to being just one of the daughters of the infamous Vanderhofs. And yet she learns that turning her back on Home may not lead to the most fulfilling outcome. While it may be somewhat of a complicated cocoon of comfort and alienation, Home can offer a perspective that turns our worldview askew—presenting the idea that happiness may not be so far away after all.
These ambitious subjects are at the belly of this comedy and so, while we are meant to laugh and enjoy all the vivid characters that pop in and out of the Vanderhof home, we are also meant to think about our own lives and the things we hold dear. Balancing these ideas is the core of Hart and Kaufman’s masterpiece and what we here at SCT have been joyously exploring over the past weeks.
We hope you enjoy the show!

The Economics of Community Theatre
One might assume that with nearly all seats lled at every performance, a not-for-prot theatre would have plenty of money.Unfortunately, the revenue om tickets covers only about 40% of the theatre’s total expenses. And, without the generosity of the many volunteers who donate their time and talent - from the actors and set builders to the ushers and stage crews - it would not even cover that. For other needs, we must reach out to the community for funding of operating expenses such as insurance, building maintenance, oce supplies and postage, as well as the many educational and cultural programs we oer beyond our main stage. If we are to continue to oer this expanded program of theatre arts, we must turn to you.Become a Sustaining Member as an Individual.
