Welcome to Pathway - A Wesleyan Church
My husband has been dairy farming for almost 20 years. As with any type
of farmer, he comes home with a very distinct scent permeating his clothes
and even his skin. I have a pretty sensitive nose, and there are many days
that I can smell what he’s been doing that day. Milking cows, feeding cows,
spreading manure, hauling silage, and even feeding calves all have very
specific smells. I try to do a load of his laundry every day because I don’t
want those smells migrating to the rest of our house! To be blunt, I think
my husband stinks when he comes home most days . . . but I’m also aware
that those smells indicate that he’s been working, being productive, and
providing for our family. Last week, when our daughter had an end-of-
school party, she invited her dad under the following condition: he wouldn’t
wear stinky clothes! She didn’t want her friends to think her dad smelled
like cow manure.
As Christ followers, we’re meant to have a certain “aroma” about us.
When we associate ourselves with the cross, and when we’re in close
proximity with the Holy Spirit, there should be a scent that penetrates our
hearts and minds. To other Christ followers, and to God Himself, this is the
sweetest fragrance we could possibly emit. But to those who don’t know
Christ, our “aroma” isn’t so pleasant. Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians that
when we have the fragrance of Jesus, it reminds them of depravity and
mortality.
The question for all of us today is this: What do I smell like?
