Callout for Artist Application
Cairns Children’s Festival - Creation Station
Background
On Sunday May 17 2020, the Tanks Arts Centre and Cairns Botanic Gardens will be holding the 7th
annual Cairns Children’s Festival.
The Cairns Children’s
Festival is an event for
children aged 12 years
and under, all celebrated
at the beautiful Cairns
Botanic Gardens and
Tanks Arts Centre and
the Cairns Performing
Arts Centre. The festival
aims to put creativity,
adventure and innovation
at the heart of the
program while providing
children the opportunity
to showcase their skills
to the Cairns community.
The festival works with
local and national artists
and performers to create a range of free and ticketed events spread across the festival.
The 2017 event introduced Creation Stations; outdoor, site-specific, artist-designed installations that
encourage children to explore, play, discover and create with low or no input from facilitators. The
‘stations’, located across the site (see Attachment 1), connect spaces, engage families, encourage
creative play and create a sense of magic.
Tanks Arts Centre is seeking expressions of interest from artists to develop Creation Stations for the
2020 Cairns Children’s Festival. Full details for submitting applications are listed below.
Applications close 5pm, Sunday 1 March 2020
Telephone: 4044 3594 Email: [email protected].
Objectives
Objective 1 – Innovation and Creativity
Cairns Children’s Festival aims to provide new and
innovative experiences for children. Each Creation
Station needs to have a strong and unique visual
presence. Children should feel drawn to enter the
space where they can use imagination and play to
explore and utilise the station. Can you take kids to
magical imaginary places? Could it be an evolving
space that children add to? Could it make
music/sound?
Objective 2 – Accessibility and Sustainability
It is important that each Creation Station utilises materials that are accessible to families and children
so they could re-create part of the experience at home.
Council is not able to keep or store materials used in the installations, therefore it is also important
that the artist considers what could happen to the installation after the festival. Could materials be re-
purposed, recycled or installed at a different location?
Objective 3 - Responsive
These Creation Stations need to be responsive to the natural environments around the Tanks Arts Centre and Cairns Botanic Gardens. On a practical level, the installation needs to be able to be erected and dismounted without impacting on the environment around it. Items also cannot be pegged or staked into the ground due to irrigation systems.
Project Costs The Tanks Arts Centre has a budget of $2000 for each Creation Station. Each application must
include an itemised budget.
All costs for the Creation Station must stay within the available budget. This includes materials, artist
fees, meetings, design development and installation of artwork. Council will supply volunteers to
assist with installation, manage the stations during the festival and assist with bumping out the
installations.
Duty of Care
As the artist or team of artists, you must exercise a duty of care in the design of the Creation Station.
Your installation must consider personnel, equipment, material and public risks, environmental impact
and working in a public space.
To apply, please complete the online information form and attach:
1. A brief written statement (up to 1 page) about your work and how it relates the themes
identified in this brief
2. Installation / Bump Out Plan
3. Concept Drawings/Images
4. Detailed Budget
Applications close 1st March 2020. Applications will be assessed by the Cairns Children’s Festival
programming team. Successful applications will be advised by 15 March 2020.
