Alumnus of the YearJeffrey Kuhlman ‘81

Jeffrey Kuhlman serves as Senior Vice President of the ten

campus Florida Hospital in Orlando, Florida. His current

assignment is Chief Medical Officer of the Florida Hospital

North/East Market and Chief Medical Officer of Florida

Hospital Altamonte. Dr. Kuhlman leads the system clinical

quality, patient safety, clinical transformation and emergency

services efforts.

In January 2009, Captain Kuhlman was appointed Physician

to the President by President Obama, serving until his

military retirement in July 2013, completing 30 years of

service in Navy Medicine and 16 years supporting the White

House.

Jeffrey Kuhlman grew up in Collegedale, Tennessee,

the second of eight children. Jeff attended the Greater

Collegedale School System from grades 1 to 12, graduating

from Collegedale Academy with the Class of 1981. While

a student at CA, Jeff took advantage of close proximity

to Southern Adventist University, then called Southern

Missionary College, by earning via challenge/CLEP 16

semester hours of college credit, and 12 semester hours in

the summer sessions after 11th and 12th grade, serving as

the inspiration for “Smart Start”. During his senior year he tailored his own “dual credit’ concept by spending

the mornings in class at CA, noon to 2 pm completing Calculus and Biology at Southern and then working at

McKee Bakery as a stacker and lift truck operator averaging 32 hours per week. Jeff graduated magna cum

laude from Southern Adventist University with a BA in Chemistry and completed pre-med requirements, 24

months after his high school graduation, at the age of 19.

Dr. Kuhlman attended medical school at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, received his Master Public

Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and completed post-graduate training in

three clinical specialties at Loma Linda University Medical Center, Naval Aerospace Medical Institute, and

Johns Hopkins. He is board certified in Aerospace, Family and Occupational Medicine. Dr. Kuhlman completed

a certificate in management at Rollins Crummer Graduate School of Business and is board certified in medical

management and a certified physician executive (CPE) by the American Association for Physician Leadership.

Jeff and his wife of 27 years, Sandy Montaperto Kuhlman, have four children; Michael, Isabella, Lena and

Henry, and live in Winter Park, Florida.

Justin Littell ‘03

Justin is a mechanical engineer at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, and part of a team that just completed

the structural test article for the Space Launch System launch vehicle stage adapter.

One of the things he likes most about his job is developing the tools and processes that NASA needs to

achieve the challenging objectives that come with building such a massive rocket. SLS is scheduled to fly no

later than November 2018 and he looks forward to seeing it launch. His work is built into this vehicle and he

wants to see it succeed.

Originally from Dayton, Tennessee, he received his engineering

degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He

actually thought he would be an archaeologist, but decided

to follow in his older brother’s footsteps and go into the

engineering field. Watching a lot of episodes of “MacGyver”

may have had something to do with that decision, too.

Justin has always liked spending time outside, whether

camping, hiking or kayaking. All of those activities take a

backseat these days though, as Justin and his wife just had

their first child, Finley Kate, almost a year ago. “I hope my work

at NASA makes Finley proud and will inspire her generation to

explore Mars and other planets in our solar system.”

Ron Reading, CA Faculty from 1989-2005

Ron Reading spent the first seventeen years of his life in Pennsylvania.

He graduated from Blue Mountain Academy and came to Southern

Adventist University for his college years. In 1973, he married Dale

(Corwin), a classmate of his, both in high school and college. They

were soon blessed with three children, Brent, Bryce, and Brooke.

A love for sports led Ron to decide to be a Physical Education teacher

when he was in the fifth grade. He taught Physical Education for

31 years, teaching all levels from kindergarten through college. He

has taught in Florida, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Tennessee. His

gymnastics team from Blue Mountain Academy was the first SDA

team to be the half time entertainment for a NBA game. He coached

teams from Washington Adventist University and Collegedale

Academy who also were honored to be able to perform at NBA

games.

In 2005, Ron left full time teaching. After becoming licensed in

massage therapy and real estate, he branched out into these two very

different areas of work. He also teaches Massage and Hydrotherapy

at Southern, and leads out in a Stretch and Strengthen class in the Hulsey Wellness Center. While still being

very active in basketball, running, and golf, Ron doesn’t have to be active with numerous Physical Education

classes every day. Hopefully this will enable his body to keep functioning for a few more years.

Ron feels blessed to have taught in private SDA schools where he could share his faith in God with students

and staff, and in turn be blessed by them. Collegedale Academy stands out in his mind as a place where

students felt very comfortable sharing their love for God during chapel talks. He also appreciated the fact that

students at CA tended to encourage those who were timid and unsure of their abilities, which enabled them

to reach their highest potential physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Ron and Dale are now at retirement age which will hopefully allow them more time to travel and to be with

their three kids and eight wonderful grandkids. Gardening and Bible studies are pursuits that they hope to

spend more time with as well. They believe that in the text in 1 Corinthians that talks of our being changed,

“in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye” is exactly what we all need. “Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
