CHAPTER DIRECTOR – JOYCE ELMORE

Happy St. Patrick's Day every-one! For those of you who did not go bowling, you missed a great time! There were 14 bowlers and two watchers, and we had a lot of fun. I hear everyone who went to Barrett Junction had a great time, too. I know we got a hot potato from Chapter O at the gathering, but we've already given it to Chapter 1Y up in Lompoc. We had a really good Chapter Director's meeting up in Bakers-field on the 6th. Anyone who is planning on going to Wing Ding and/or Region Rally up Idaho, please let me know. The whole state of California has been vol-unteered to man the prize booths at both Wing Ding and Region. With enough volunteers we should each only have to spend

and hour or two at the booth. You will get to meet lots of new people and probably a bunch of folks you haven't seen in awhile. It could be a lot of fun! We also discussed District Rally which will be held at the hotel where the meeting was held. It is a very nice hotel, big pool, Jacuzzi and even an exercise room. I hope to see lots of you up there having a good time. Rick and I left for Bakersfield Friday 3/5 after work with Rick Hinrichs from Chapter N. We took the high desert route, stop-ping at the Outpost for dinner, up through Mojave and over through Tehachapie, man was it cold! I forgot my electric socks and my feet were freezing, but we made it okay. After the meeting we (Jim Z, and Dave & Dori) rode over to Santa Maria on some two lane highway, had the best dinner at the Hitching Post in Casmallia and spent the night in Lompoc. The next morning we visited Chapter 1Y to pass the hot potato. After the gathering Jim took us the long way home, all the little roads down to Santa Barbara, Ojai, Santa Paula and Fillmore. Beau-tiful countryside, great ride. We stopped in Newhall at Accesso-ries Unlimited so the guys could

do some shopping, then took the highway home. Stopped in Te-mecula at Rocky's for dinner and of course, a chocolate shake. What a great weekend. This weekend is also going to be busy. We have a big group going to El Centro for the Air show and a small group going up to Carpenteria for Chapter 1S's poker run. I'm sure both groups will have a good time. On Friday the 19th we will have our first Wing Ding plan-ning meeting at Dan Sherwin's place. It is set for 6:30pm and will be a pot luck. We will de-cide who is going when and split into groups to plan our routes. Should be a very productive eve-ning, we will have two more planning meetings before leave

time. Bring your maps and ideas as to where you may want to stop and what states you want to go through. That's about all for now. Hope everyone has been having a great month, see you on the road.

Here it is another month gone by and things just seem to get more busy, also we have some changes too, which I might add should lend to the improvement of how and where we conduct our monthly meetings.. As you read this newsletter you will no-tice the surroundings are some-what different. This should work out a lot better than the old place, as we found out last month when a HUGE crowd showed up. As some of you may have no-ticed, I have not been on any of the Thursday night rides. I un-derstand through the grapevine that you guys & gals are going to some great places. Make sure once in awhile you think of me and have an extra piece of pie. My new schedule doesn’t allow me that luxury however, it does give me the weekends off and I

think that works out a lot better. Anyway, life goes on and we do what we can. Not much else to write on this month but I did come across this article from an-other source that some of you may be interested in. TOUGH NEW EMISSIONS FOR CALIFORNIA MOTOR-CYCLES Motorcycles in the Golden State no longer will spew large volumes of pollution under rules adopted by the Calif. Air Re-sources Board (CARB). On an 8-0 vote, Dec. 10, the board approved the first emis-sion restrictions in nearly 15 years on motorcycles, which are among the dirtiest vehicles on the road. The restrictions will be phased in on new models, begin-ning in 2004. They target nitro-gen oxide gas, the most difficult and expensive smog-forming pollutant to control. Motorcycle companies waged a strong fight against the rules, saying the controls required in the last phase would make the road machines unaffordable to most consumers and would ruin sales. But the air board staff prevailed in arguing that the

pollution controls are among the most cost-effective means avail-able at a time when the biggest smog-emitters, such as automo-biles, are already heavily regu-lated. Motorcycles built today spew seven to fifteen times more pol-lution than new cars, according to the air board’s engineers. The state engineers predict that the motorcycle restrictions will mean a reduction of 2.9 tons of smog-causing pollutants daily by 2010, two years after the rules are fully implemented. The 571,000 motorcycles on the road today emit an estimated 7.7 tons daily. Jerry Martin, a board spokes-man, said the emission reduction can be achieved with existing technology. Two-stroke piston engines propelling many motor-cycles today probably will re-place with cleaner four-stroke models, or engines that inject fuel directly into combustion chambers rather than through carburetors. Catalytic converters also may have to be added or improved. The new rules apply only to motorcycles sold in California that are certified for highway

driving, with engine displace-ments larger than 280 cubic cen-timeters. The smog controls are pro-jected to cost manufacturers a total of $3.6 million a year. “We expect the bulk of that cost to be passed on to consumers, raising the price and average of $100.00,” Martin said. The av-erage price of a new motorcycle built for road use is $7,600.00, he said. To accommodate the off-road enthusiasts, the rules allow mo-torcycles that don’t meet pollu-tion standards to run on state lands, such as off-road vehicle parks, on days when smog is not heavy. Hi, everyone! The spring is here and everyone seems to be going on more rides these days. I figured we may need a little re-ality check right about now. Two incidents happened to me recently and I wanted to share with you. Both happened right in my neighborhood where I ride/drive everyday. I approached a stop sign where there was a stop sign for me, but not for the cross traffic. The truck which was at the intersec-tion already had the left turning signal on. I was on my new mo-torcycle, and there was enough space on the right of the truck for me to squeeze in. I thought that when he went, I could also go without having to wait for my turn at the intersection. Well, it really didn’t work out as I ex-pected since the truck crossed the street with me before he turned left into a gas station on the other side of the street. I was

fortunate because the street we were on was wide enough for 1.5 vehicle and neither of us had to be forced out of the lane to avoid each other. Not only was this a scary incident for me, but a police officer who saw it also followed me home to caution me about it. (No ticket!) The other incident was where I had the right of way, and the cross traffic had a stop sign. I approached the intersection in third gear but slowed down when I saw a van coming up to his stop sign without really slowing down (SIPDE!!!). The van came to a hard stop when he SEEMED to see me. When I started to accelerate again (I had the right of way), the van started to pull forward into the intersec-tion again. I braked and honked at him, and he stopped a second time. I proceeded again when he decided to step on it and jump out into the intersection in front of me!! I had to brake for the third time, so hard that my rear tire skidded under me and the bike slid sideways. The van never even slowed down to see what happened to me after he took off. I ended up stopped sideways in the middle of the in-tersection as the van continued across three lanes of traffic.

Even with my slowing and honking, he still ignored the right of way and cut me off. The lesson here is that you really can’t foresee what other riders/drivers do on the road re-gardless what the traffic signs indicate! Even when they SEEM to see you, assume they don’t. Expect the worst, and you will be pleasantly surprised. I consider myself a pretty safe driver (rider), yet I almost got into a colli-sion twice because I didn’t wait a few sec-onds for my turn OR wait even though it was my turn in the name of safety. There are more riders and drivers on the road in this nice weather, not to mention all the irrational and an-gry ones these days. Use the highest caution when you are out there. Take some ERC or MSF courses or even a PLP to brush up on your skills and practice for the bad situations you may encounter. Ride Safe and watch out -- assume they are

out to get you and they might not!!

I'd like to dedicate this months article to a group of people that dedicate much of their time and effort to keep us in-formed and on top of what is going on in our Chapters and they do it with a dedication second to none. These people are our Newsletter Editors. Have you ever put together a newsletter? It's a tough job and takes a lot of planning and foresight. It's easier now with all the programs avail-able to help us publish the Chapter Newsletters but with-out these folks we would never know what is going on. Back in the early days of "Cut & Paste" the first News-letter Editor I ever met was Cathy Span of CA1V Cathy

always did a great job and a few years later I was cutting and pasting and trying to do as good a job as she did. Computers had already hit the scene but I didn't have the ex-pertise and I was always in awe of those that could pro-duce a newsletter on their computer. Two names that come to mind are Susie Coles (CA2S) and LaDonna John-son (CA1R). LaDonna was the Editor of her Chapter Newsletter and also the Re-gion G Gazette. In my mind these two knew all there was to know about Desktop Pub-lishing. Then along came Dr. Phil Hanson. I was appointed as Chapter Director and Phil volunteered to produce the CA1V newsletter. The Road-runner Report. I really learned a lot from Phil, but to this day I cannot manipulate the program he used. It seems to me that about the time CA1N and CA1V tied for First Place at the 1996 Re-gion Rally and we walked away with those trophies and the money, the newsletters in the District took off. I'm

proud to say they haven't stopped since. Technology has certainly had an impact but it's the imagination and dedication of the newsletter editor that makes it happen. So to all the Newsletter Edi-tors, past and present, a tip of the District hat and a big "Thank You". Take a minute and thank your Newsletter Editor for the great job they are doing......and re-member...... IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!

If we could shrink the population of the earth to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same it would look like this: - There would be 57 Asians, - 21 Europeans, - 14 Western Hemisphere people (both North and South Americans), - and 8 Africans. - Seventy (70) persons would be non-Christian, and 30 would be Christian. - Fifty percent (50%) of the entire world's wealth would be in the hands of only 6 people, and these six would all be citizens of the United States. - Seventy (70) people would be unable to read. - Fifty (50) would suffer from malnutrition, - 80 would live in substandard housing, - only 1 would have a university education. When one considers our world from such an incredibly compressed perspective, the need for both tolerance and understanding becomes glaringly apparent.

Take Poway Road East from I-15 all the way through town. At Garden Road turn right (7-11 on the corner) and go to the 4-way stop. Turn right on Neddick and con-tinue up the hill where it turns into High Pine St. when it turns East. The house is almost at the end of the street on the right.

Take I-15 North to Valley Parkway in Escondido. Go East on Valley Parkway to the first signal light and turn left into the McDonald's parking lot.

Pie Rides start at Wal-Mart - I15 and Aero Drive

Take I-15 to Aero Drive, then go West to Murphy Canyon. Turn South on Murphy Canyon and enter the Wal-Mart Parking lot which is on the right. We stage at the far South end of the lot. Rides normally start at 7:00 PM every Thursday night.

10. You get a threatening note made up of letters cut out of a magazine with pinking shears, and they're all the same size, the same font, and precisely lined up in razor-sharp rows. 9. You find a lemon slice in the dog's water bowl. 8. On her TV show she makes a gingerbread house that looks exactly like your split-level, right down to the fallen licorice downspout and the half-open graham cracker garage door. 7. You find your pet bunny on the stove in an exquisite tarra-gon, rose petal & saffron demi-glace', with pecan-crusted hearts of palm and a delicate mint-fennel sauce. 6. The unmistakable aroma of potpourri follows you even af-ter you leave the bathroom. 5. You discover that every napkin in the entire house has been folded into a swan. 4. No matter "where" you eat, your place setting always in-cludes an oyster fork. 3. Twice this week you've been the victim of a drive-by doily-ing. 2. You wake up in the hospital with a concussion and endive stuffing in every orifice. 1. You awaken one morning with a glue gun pointed squarely at your temple.

As you can see above, David and Dori both have new toys. Err, I mean totally practical transportation vehicles. :-) I imagine it’s going to be tough keeping them off the bikes for a while and they already have over 2000 miles in the first two weeks. Meanwhile, the riding season is upon us and by the time you read this we will have the first couple under our belts, so to speak. CA1I’s Valentines Ride was just OK, but in all fairness, it wasn’t their fault. For those who didn’t know, they were not able to plan the route they wanted because the road was washed out in several places. Oh well, as you can see on the cover, Gerry did manage to walk away with the 50/50 prize

money, so all’s well that ends well. Several of us stayed late and took a po-tato up to C h a p t e r CA1V in Vic-torville which made for a rather long day in both miles and

hours. As Joyce mentioned in her arti-cle, we are going to start plan-ning our trip to Wind Ding soon, so if you haven’t already made reservations, contact her for in-formation on the hotel situation. We will also begin planning for our Halloween Fun Run soon. I spoke to the folks at Motorsport who donated tires last year and they plan to have a new Honda dealership open in a few months. It’s going to be located in the West end of the Stein Mart building which used to be Kmart’s auto repair department. We’ll see. I’m not going to count on it until I see it.
