CHAPTER DIRECTOR – JOYCE ELMORE

By the time you read this, a bunch of us will be on our way to Region Rally in Idaho. We'll tell you all about it when we get back. Then we'll have to turn right around and go up to Ba-kersfield for District Rally. If you haven't made your reserva-tions yet, you don't have much time, but check out the flyer in the back of the newsletter for the hotel's phone number. Hope to see a bunch of you up there for all the fun. The middle of last month a group of us went up to Merced to pick up Dori's bike and help David & Dori install a new Chapter Educator for CA2-N. We got up to Merced around 4pm and went directly to the Honda shop. Dori was very ex-cited about getting her bike back. After David took care of the bike, we went over to Gary & Maryln Tessmer's, friends with GWRRA, so they could

join us on the ride up to Angel's Camp. Gary led the way and took us on some nice little roads through some tiny towns. Poor Dori got no mercy, after not rid-ing for two months, we took her right up the hills into the

twisties. We got to the hotel and there was someone waiting for us, Robert Taylor had come up from Antioch to see us and ride with us a bit. We all had dinner together, after taking the advice of our District Director as to how good the fish and chips were, quite a few of us had that and it was yummy. We also had delicious home made pie. The next morning we walked over to the restaurant again for Chapter 2N's meeting. Jerry & Pat, the CDs, had just gotten back from Wing Ding the day before around 4pm. They were a bit sunburned and tired, but had a great time. I think we over-whelmed them with all our peo-ple, 'cuz there weren't enough seats for all the people so some had to eat in the regular part of the restaurant. So the meeting got started a bit late, but no big-gie. David did his thing and I promoted our ride and we were

back on the road by 11am. Again, no mercy for Dori. We went up and over the Sierra Ne-vadas by way of route 4, skinny, twisty and 12% downgrade!! We had planned to meet Ron & Fay Tolson in Lee Vining for lunch, but by the time we got there, they were already done!! And Ron had eaten the last piece of peach/strawberry cobbler, but there was more in the oven. Af-ter a nice lunch we took off for Victorville, stayed at the Budget Inn and got up what we thought was early, to go to Chapter V's meeting. Well, we miss read the newsletter and we were late!! But at least we were still there!! Thanks to Jim & Carole Waddell and Max for meeting us up there. What a great weekend. We had a very nice BBQ/Swim party at Bob and Carla's on the 24th. Thanks guys for all the fun. We also had a good turn out for the Air show. I was a lit-

tle concerned when I first pulled into the Mira Mesa park & ride and only saw Jim & Bill. But then I heard Dori & David on the CB, so that made five bikes. When we got to the Home Town Buffet Jason & Joy were already there and as we walked into the restaurant, we kinda decided we didn't want to eat there and went over to Fuddrucker's. Well, about half an hour or more later, Anita walks in and says "Oh, there you are. I guess I can go over and tell JR I found you." It seems they were running a bit late & figured they would just meet us at Home Town Buffet, oh well, at least they found us before we were all done. We picked up a few more folks along the way and had a great time at the twilight show. Sunday the first, a group of us went to San Diego Touring Soci-ety's fund raiser and came home with the plaque for the largest

group registered. Thanks to all the Touring Society folks who also ride with Chapter F, for reg-istering as Chapter F members, that was really nice. The ride was great and we even had a few folks win some of the door prizes, but not the big one. Remember to fill out your TowBuster form in Wing World and also to throw out any old GWRRA applications you may have in your trunk. If you meet someone you want to give an ap-plication to, you will need to give them the new one with the family membership on it. So pick up some new forms or use the one in the back of your newsletter. District Rally is coming up real soon and the last I heard, there were still some rooms available at the Doubletree Inn. If you call and they don't have rooms, get hold of Jim Zabler and he can give you the number of the Inns of America hotel just up the road. We will need a team to participate in the Challenge Cup games, which are a lot of fun. Lets see if Chapter F can bring the cup home for a third year in a row. I also hope everyone is practicing for the skills games and cleaning up their bikes to put in the show. There will also be a people's choice bike show,

where they don't inspect your bikes with white gloves. Let's all get out there and support our District and show them what a great Chapter we have. Our fun ride is fast approach-ing, we will have our final meet-ing on Oct 10th at Carmen and Rae's at 1pm. We will need eve-ryone who is planning on help-ing with the ride to be there and all the door prizes everyone has collected to be there, too. We will be making signs, writing down door prizes, making up registration envelopes and all kinds of stuff. So, please come and help. If we haven't assigned you a task, or you haven't volun-teered for one, we'll find some-thing for you to do. Remember that we all need to register, any-one who is working the ride can register for $5.00, that will cover the cost of your pin and lunch. If you are not working the ride, you will pay full price. That about does it for now. Have fun while we're gone and see you when you get back. Joyce, Rick and the girls "Your dreams can be realities. They are the stuff that leads us through life toward great happi-ness." Deborah Norville

ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTOR – JIM ZABLER

We have now gone through the first six months of 1999 and so much has happened. I hope everyone has been having a good time so far. I know that Kay & I have been busy and it seems as if the speed is picking up to a faster tempo. Last week I led a group of 5 bikes and 5 ½ (just kidding) people to CA1-D for their monthly meeting. The group consisted of Bill, Chuck, Don, Randy and his daughter Amber. While we were getting ready to leave McD’s, Jim & Carol and Max showed up, they went up to CA1-V and met our other group that came down from up North. After the meet-ing at 1D, Chuck & Randy had to head straight back so they came back down I-5, the remain-ing group of three headed across I-91 to I-15 and down to Tom’s Farm for some fresh fruit. Both groups finally met at Rocky’s about 11 am for ice cream.

Saturday found about 15 riders at the Parking Lot Practice sessions. There were some new faces also. I think everyone had a good time and picked up some helpful hints and safety notes about riding. We also had some practice in the riding skill events that will be done at District Rally, remember the more you practice, the better chance you will have of taking home the tro-phy. Skill events are a lot harder than just riding on the super slab from point A to B. The main point being, is to participate as a chapter and enjoy yourself. Another reminder, our FUN RUN coming up in Oct. Don’t forget we are still looking for door prizes and anyone who can help. Please bring door prizes to our next meeting (Sept/Oct) or get them to me, Kay, Joyce, Rick, or give me a call and we’ll arrange to pick them up if needed. Whatever it takes. Keep your eyes and ears open for possible sponsors. The Sept. 19 ride to the Campo train museum might be a little warm. There is gift shop, a train car with a big screen video showing some history of the trains and area. There is also a 1 ½ hour train ride to Miller’s Creek. The cost is $10.00 and should be very interesting. The train takes you into the pictur-

esque hills and backcountry of San Diego’s East County, so bring your camera and plenty of film. After the train ride, enjoy a guided tour of the Railroad Mu-seum train yard presented by one of the expert museum docents. On the 31st some of us met at Mira Mesa P&R and went to Home Town Buffet for lunch but wound up at Fuddrucker's in-stead. More people showed up as we were getting ready to leave so we ended up with a total of thirteen at the air show. We were able to park a lot closer this time and didn’t have to walk as far. The show was great, the weather was a little cooler this time than it was in the past. We were leaving the show about 10pm, somehow I was able to scoot out somewhat earlier than the rest and get through traffic before it really got jammed. The people walking in the road-way made it a real mess before some of the Marines were able to make enough for traffic. I think I was home, and in bed be-fore the rest of the group got to the highway and I heard from Bill they had to go all the way to Clairemont Mesa Blvd., before they could head North. Sunday found me head-ing for McD’s about 7am. Picked up Bill at the Shell sta-tion and headed North for break-

fast. Met up with Don and Gerry, also Max and CA1-N were there. They were heading for SDTS run at Rocky’s. Said hellos, hugs, good-byes and headed for Santa Ana and JBJ Cycles Maint. Seminar. Arrived in time to meet with the folks from 1-A & 1-S. Jack did all the talking while his son John & Bob Faulkner dismantled, a Wing from CA1-A, I got a lot of good information which will be of benefit for me. I strongly recommend it for anyone who works on their own bike. I be-lieve he will be giving a modi-fied seminar at District Rally. Try attend if at all possible. Had a nice lunch of chili cheese dogs with onions, chips and soda. The course was over around 2:15 and it was time to head South. All in all, I think everyone picked up some useful ideas about maintaining their Wings. Kay & I wish everyone going to Region a safe and won-derful time. Look forward to seeing you, and hearing all about the trip when you return. Until next time, remem-ber, Ride hard, Ride safe and Enjoy life to its fullest every sin-gle day.

Mind Games Well, by the time y'all read this, Dori and I will be in Utah, so just pretend I am rambling on during a chapter meeting. Dori and I are looking forward to tak-ing ERC's in Idaho, and this got me to thinking about the differ-ent skills and techniques that a riding course teaches you. How do we apply them day to day as we ride to work or to play? We all practice the physi-cal skills, and I have preached them many times. Habit strength, developing good habits and trying to reduce/unlearn bad habits; these are the actual riding skills we learn and develop in PLP's and ERC's.... but what about the Mind Games? As I was riding home from work through a residential area the other day, I was thinking about this as I scanned the roadway ahead and watched out for kids playing along the sidewalk. MSF teaches a SIPDE concept (Scan Identify Predict Decide

Execute) and GWRRA teaches a slimmed down SPA (Scan Pre-dict Act), but it all comes down to playing 'What if' Mind Games. As a child's ball went up in the air behind parked cars to my right, I started thinking, what if........ A ball up in the air could easily become a ball out into the street with a child chasing it from between parked cars. But don't focus so much on the right that you ignore hazards from the left, there are driveways and children to the left as well. What if, What if..... these two groups of children could be one group in the process of crossing the road from one play area to another. Watching for hazards left and right, I found myself also scanning for on-coming traffic and road hazards both near (~3-4 seconds ahead) and far (~12 seconds ahead). Right-left, near-far; constant eye move-ment, playing the What If game, while I change my lane position relative to the predicted and/or imagined hazards. Where will I go if any of my What Ifs actually come true? Will I counter steer to avoid or apply maximum braking to pre-vent a collision? Stopped at a four-way, does the cross traffic see me and allow me my turn? If unsure, I motion the traffic through. Still stopped at that four way, does the traffic com-

CHAPTER EDUCATORS – DAVID & DORI DIRIG

ing up behind me see that I am stopped in the roadway? Watch-ing my mirrors, I'm prepared (in 1st gear) to pull up and out of the way, while I flash my brake lights to decrease the chances that I get creamed from behind. You can play the What If game anywhere. Its good prac-tice and develops good habits (can you say habit strength?). I also play the What If game on the freeway (I-15, 4+ lanes of traffic each direction). Commut-ing to and from work, you are constantly scanning for road hazards, debris, or traffic merg-ing from either side. Body lan-guage is a key point to look for. Is that driver ahead of you look-ing over his shoulder looking for an opening in your lane? He may create an opening where you're at or he may not even rec-ognize that you are there. In heavy traffic, I often change tracks just so the lane appears occupied where I am. If I'm run-ning in Lane 1, I ride in the right track so the traffic ahead of me doesn't hide me from traffic in lane 2 looking for an opening. What about someone in a hurry coming up behind you? Does he see you? Will he see your signal as you change lanes to let him by or will he acceler-ate and go around you on the right? Are you prepared either way? I'm sure I'm not the only one who has danced between the

lanes as someone comes up be-hind you and tries to pass on the right while you weave along the Bots trying to stay out if their way. If you're not assuming the worst and watching your mir-rors / doing your head checks, you could easily become a hood ornament. Beyond the physical rid-ing skills, motorcycling is pri-marily mental, and these mental skills need practice. The next time you're out and about, exam-ine your routine. Do you focus/fixate on a hazard to the right, leaving yourself blind to other risks? Scanning is the key. If you are worried about one spe-cific threat/hazard, revisit that orientation more often, but do not neglect the other potential risks, near and far, right, left, and straight ahead. We joke about having eyes in the back of our heads, but we should really have eyes facing all directions of the compass as soon as the bike comes up off the side stand. Scanning all directions for po-tential risk and playing the What If game is a great way to reduce your risks while increasing your preparedness should any of these What Ifs actually come true and come AT you!! Ride Safe and play those Mind Games, it could save your life. D&D

Good news for you procrastina-tors. I just checked with the DoubleTree and we still have some rooms left. Don't wait too long or you might not get a room. The thing to remember is to make your reservation before 20 August. After that date the hotel has the right to charge you their regular rate. Just a reminder. All Chapters, please remember to bring at least two door prizes. I already know of some of the door prizes that are being donated by our ven-dors. As usual they are first class. At least one chapter is do-nating a couple door prizes that is really above and beyond. As I told you last month the Grand Prize is going to be $500 plus whatever number of extra tickets we sell. We've ordered trophies for the Rally and Brian Holmes our supplier is giving us some

great door prizes as well as do-nating a special trophy for the Bike Show. Brian is also our shirt vendor and the supplier of our rally shirts. He's promised another outstanding design for this year's shirt. Herbal Pet another vendor is a major sponsor for our Skill Events. Don't forget CA2N's Poker Run on 28 August starting in Angels Camp and ending at Bear Valley Lodge. There are rumors of a party Saturday night. CA2K has informed us that they are canceling their Poker Run for 6 November. That will leave the entire month of November free except for a scheduled CD meeting on the 13th. Fay and I have just returned from another great Wing Ding. California was well represented and we had a great time at our Ice Cream Social on the 29th. CA1R participated in the Talent Show and did their rendition of the Sheet Family. I have no idea why they didn't win as they had the audience rolling in the aisles. No Sheet! Just Remember........IT DOES-N'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS! Ron & Fay

PHOTO ALBUM - TRIPLE CHAPTER VISIT

Notice that the co-rider (George) is already on board

Top: Dori is finally re-united with her bike. It wasn’t long before she was carving through the turns again. Left: Robert Taylor tagged along and rode almost all the way over the Sierra’s with us. Bottom: Highway 4 was ummm, ‘interesting’. The top part had no cen-ter line and there was a 12% grade going down. LOTS of fun for those with the constitution to enjoy it. :-)

23

Well, after 2 months, it was time to go and pick up Dori's bike. She and the bike were both healed and it was time to re-unite them. We had to go to Merced to pick up the bike, and this coincided with Dori and my District Educator responsi-bilities of installing Ray and Hope Antasek as Chapter Educa-tors of CA2N in Angels Camp. Sounds like a great reason to take a three day weekend!! We put the word out to CA1F that we were going, and to our pleas-ure and surprise, several people volunteered to go with us. Thanks to Dan Dresser, Rick and Joyce, Doug and Carmen, as well as Crystal and her daughter Janine for keeping us in good company over the trip. We all left from McD's on Friday morning for a day on the freeways getting to Merced (~400 miles) by mid afternoon in order to complete the paperwork and get Dori's bike taken care of. Tim at Merced Powersports had her bike all ready and waiting sitting out on the show room floor with its newer (and less abused) brethren. As you can see, Dori and Curious George were thrilled to get back up on their own ride. Once we got the bike all taken care of (and my saddlebags unloaded!!), we rode over to pick up Gary and Marilyn Tessmer from CA2U who would be riding with us

from Merced to Angels Camp for the CA2N meeting on Satur-day. Gary and Marilyn were a tremendous help the weekend that Dori went down, helping us get the bike taken care of and giving us a place to get settled during that 'fateful weekend in May.' Thanks again to Gary and Marilyn. That's the tremendous thing about GWRRA, you can be in any part of the state, the nation, or the world for that mat-ter (remember our Winging in Japan?) and find Wingers will-ing to help you out. But I di-gress..... We picked up Gary and Marilyn, and Gary lead us (8 bikes by this point) out through the back roads of Gold Country. What beautiful country! The only down side was that we spent a lot of the time riding into the sun, but it was still a nice ride. Dori did a great job han-dling the curves and country roads, considering that she had-n't been riding in the 2 months since her accident. We took our time, and I was really proud of her for learning and immediately adopting a delayed apex ap-proach to ALL the curves. Of course, I must have re-lived the accident a couple dozen times over the hundred miles between Merced and Angels Camp, but that's the price of doing business. Its kind of ironic that I preached delayed apex turns to her over

the past two months, but once we got on the bikes, it made me crazy watching her get so deep into curves before starting her turn. Of course she was doing exactly what she should have been doing; its was simply a matter of my relaxing and trust-ing in her ability. We made it to the hotel without incident and were in for quite a surprise, as Robert Taylor rode in from San Francisco to meet us for the night!! He had seen my original email and was camping nearby so as to go to CA2N's meeting the next morning with us. So the next morning, we had 9 bikes and a dozen people from CA1F, plus Ron and Fay Tolson, plus a half dozen visitors from CA2J. We basically over-whelmed the poor restaurant, and CA2N's meeting was most of an hour late getting started. But that's okay as it gave us more time to socialize and make friends. We got the meeting started, promoted our ride in Oc-tober, and Dori and I installed their new Chapter Educators. Funny thing was that we contrib-uted a free registration to our ride to their 50/50. When they drew the ticket, the first four numbers called were all mem-bers of CA1F; twice it was Dan's ticket!! Of course, we had them draw again (and again and again...) until someone else won the registration. Bummer was

that we had used up our luck and when the money ticket was drawn, we didn't win it. After the meeting, we mounted up and headed east, taking Hwy 4 over the Sierras. What an incredible road!! Can't wait for CA2N's ride in August; this is a very beautiful and pic-turesque area. Fun roads too, twisties and narrow mountain roads, 10 mph switch backs on 12% downgrades!! What a great....wait a minute, Dori just got back on her bike...... She was less than pleased with me for planning this route, but we took our time, rode slow, and she did great!! (for the record, I did make sure that she knew and approved of the route, but she seemed to forget this as we ne-gotiated the worst of the hairpin turns coming down on the east side of the Sierras). We all en-joyed the road and took our time, and once we got down the 395 for a break, I was sufficiently punished for choosing this route for her first day out. You shoulda seen the look on the faces of some Harley riders tool-ing along 395 as Dori jumped off her bike, ran back, and started punching me in the arm for making her go through the twisties right off the bat. It was pretty funny. To Dori's credit, she rode her own ride, took the curves and downgrade hairpins at her own pace. By the end of

TRIPLE CHAPTER VISIT ...WHAT A TEAM!

her first full day back on the road, she had crossed over the Sierras and done 450 miles. What a woman!! By this point we were back to 7 bikes, as Gary and Marilyn had headed back to Merced, and Robert broke off on the 89 to take a twisty way back towards San Francisco. Anyway, from there we took 395 south, with the goal of making Victorville, so we could visit CA1V's meeting on Sunday AM. We avoided buying gas in Bridgeport because we were warned that it was really expen-sive ($1.99/gallon). So instead, we kept going until we had to stop in for gas in Lee Vining only to find out that it was $2.09/gallon !!doh!! After seeing Ron and Fay again in Lee Vining (they took Hwy 108 over the mountains and were running ahead of us) and having lunch, we headed south. It was pushing 4PM by the time we got done with a late lunch and mounted back up, so we knew it would be late by the time we made Victorville. This was a bonus in one way. Be-cause it was so late in the after-noon, we spent the entire day heading down 395 in the shadow of the setting sun behind the Si-erras. It was much cooler that way, as it could have been really hot this time of year. We got up the next morn-ing to head to CA1V's meeting

at 830, only to find out that their meeting starts at 730 (my bad). After interrupting their meeting, we promoted our ride with a reg-istration donated to their 50/50. Guess who had their ticket drawn!! Dan Dresser!! The man won the same prize three times at two different chapter meetings...what are the odds!!?? Jim and Carol Waddell and Max left San Diego Sunday morning to meet us in V-Ville, so we had 9 bikes and 12 people visit CA1V's meeting, and Jim Z, Bill, and Don Cone (and some others I think) went to CA1D's meeting at the same time. We met the three of them for ice cream at Rocky's in Temecula before heading home on Sunday. In the span of 2 days, CA1F vis-ited three different chapters to promote our ride in October. Outstanding job everyone; thanx for supporting not only the chap-ter, but also for supporting Dori and I. What started out as just the two of us picking up where we left off in May after Dori's accident became a fun-filled, 1100 mile 3-day weekend. Thanks again to everyone who made this such a great weekend, and we'll see ya on the road. R ide Sa fe and COAST (Concentrate On A Safe Trip) D&D
