Spin-orbit coupling:

1. From the electron’s point of view, the proton orbits

the electron and produces a magnetic field that

couples with the electron’s spin and alters its orbit;

2. In solids, spin-orbit coupling leads to topological

insulators, quantum spin hall effects, etc….
