An Application of
to
a Tunable Diode Laser Heterodyne
the Antarctic Ozone Hole Study
Spectrometer
Taguchi, M., S. Okano and H. Fukunishi
Upper Atmosphere and Space Research Laboratory
Tohoku University
We have been developing a laser heterodyne spectrometer for remote sensing of the atmospheric ozone and other minor constituents in the stratosphere. Absorption lines of atmospheric ozone in the infrared region (A --9.5pm) were recently observed with the spectrometer using a tunable diode laser (TDL) as a local oscillator. An example of the results is shown in Fig.1. The lower trace in Fig.1 is the observed atmospheric spectrum
;obtained by sweeping the wavenumber of the TDL from 1064.0 to 1064.7 cm -I with the tuning rate of about 0.08 cm-1/min. The upper trace is the simultaneous measurement of absorp-tion spectrum of methanol contained in a cell, which is used as a frequency standard. There exist at least ten strong atmospheric absorption lines, which were identified as those of ozone referring to the AFGL atmospheric absorption line parameters compilation; although there is an absorption line (1064.33 cm-') which appears clealy in our observed spectrum but not corresponds to the AFGL listing.. The solar elevation dependence of the absorption was also observed.
One of the advantages of this TDL heterodyne spectrometer is that the operating
wavenumber region can be selected freely only by replacing the local oscillator. Owing to this versatility, it is expected that this spectrometer can be applied to observations of ozone and other molecules, such as nitrogen-oxygen compounds, chlorine-oxygen compounds or chloro-fluoromethanes, which are related to ozone through photochemical reactions and iilight iTi;i:ortant as one of th° ,ane, of the Antarctic ozone hole.

INTERPLANETARY MAGNETIC CLOUDS AND SOLAR DARK FILAMENTS
Katsuhide Marubashi
Hiraiso Solar Terrestrial Research Center, Radio Research Laboratory
This paper is concerned with the interplanetary magnetic cloud as was defined by Klein and Burlaga (JGR, 87, 613, 1982). In their definition, the magnetic cloud is characterized by the rotation of magnetic field vectors within itself nearly
parallel to a plane. The aim of this study is to find out a direct physical con-nection between the interplanetary magnetic clouds and causative solar phenomena by identifying the origins of the magnetic clouds on the sun.
Magnetic field configurations were investigated for more than 10 typical examples of the interplanetary magnetic clouds. It is shown that the observed mag-netic field rotation within the clouds can be explained to be due to the passage of a spacecraft through a twisted magnetic flux rope structure. Here, the magnetic flux rope is defined as a cylindrical structure with a strong axial field in the center, and weaker and more azimuthal fields at large distances from the center. An attempt to identify the causative agents on the sun based on the transit time
requirement reveals that many of the magnetic clouds can be consistently inter-preted to have been produced in association with sudden disappearances of solar filaments.
1 detailed comparison of the magnetic field signature oxpected from the flux rope model with observed magnetic field variations reveals that the orientation of the observed flux rope axis generally coincides with the orientation of the associ-ated solar filament which disappeared. It is found that two types of interplanet-ary flux ropes exist. The electric current flowing within rise structure is nearly
parallel to the local magnetic field in one type, and nearly anti-parallel in the other type. It is further found that the first type (parallel type) structures originate from filament disappearances in the southern hemisphere of the sun, and the second type (anti-parallel type) structures from those in the northern hemi-sphere, irrespective of the polarity of the solar general field changing with the sunspot cycle. In both cases, the direction of the azimuthal magnetic field in the outer portion of the interplanetary flux rope is consistent with the direction of the arch magnetic field over the associated filament inferred from the large-scale photospheric magnetic field in the region surrounding the filament.
Recent studies on coronal mass election (CUE) events pointed out that
typical CUE events exhibit features of a three-part structure: a bright core within a dark lunette surrounded. by a bright featureless loop. Combining this with the above observational evidence, we can lead the most natural interpreta-tion for generation of the interplanetary magnetic cloud as follows. The magnetic 0 SUN field surrounding an eruptive prominencehas a flux rope structure already at the time of eruption, and the structure is extended or propagated through inter-
planetary space with its orientation almost maintained, being observed as the interplanetary magnetic cloud as is illustrated in the figure.

Based on more than 500 photographs of comet Halley during the 1985/86 appari-
tion, the knot structure in its plasma tail on December 31, 1985, is concluded
to be due to the magnetotail reconnection. Dynamics of the knot is observa-
tionally obtained from 22 photographs and expressed as shown by the hollow
circles in Fig. 1.
(1) The observed X-t relation coincides well with the theoretical relation
(solid curves) expected from the dynamic pressure model, in which a sudden in-
crease of dynamic pressure of the solar wind is considered to generate the tail
plasmoid. (2) The observed knot structure suggesting open field lines shows a distinct
contrast of the substorm type disturbances in the cometary and the terrestrial
magnetosphere.

An MHD Model of Polar Cap Structure
T. Ogino (Research Institute of Atmospherics, Nagoya University) R. J. Walker (IGPP, UCLA)
M. Ashour-Abdalla (IGPP and Dept. of Physics, UCLA)
We have modeled the dependence of the polar cap structure and the magnetospheric configuration on the north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field
(IMF) by performing a three dimensional time dependent magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of the interaction between the solar wind and the earth's magnetosphere. The model has high spatial resolution with 0.5Re grid spacing on a (Nx, Ny,
Nz)=(150, 50, 50) point grid except for the boundary. When a uniform northward IMF
(Bz=5nT) is initially imposed throughout the system, the plasma sheet thickens in a small region near the noon-midnight meridian and extends into the tail lobes. When
viewed from the polar cap this appears as a narrow finger of closed field lines
extending into the polar cap. When the northward IMF initially enters the
simulation region with the solar wind flow, the plasma sheet extension becomes less
pronounced. For both cases the convection near the noon-midnight meridian is sunward and field-aligned currents of the region 1 type appear in the both sides of
the plasma sheet extension. When we set the IMF to zero the sunward convection
stops and the field lines in the tail have a more concave shape. For a southward IMF (Bz=-5nT) the field lines have a very concave shape as a neutral line forms
across the tail and the convection near the noon-midnight meridian is changed to a
wellknown pattern of anti-sunward. When the IMF is southward the polar cap expands until it reaches 65° latitude at midnight while for northward IMF it shrinks to
80°. We also have used the model to evaluate the effect of dipole tilt on the
configuration of the tail. For smal tilt angles the neutral sheet forms an arc
across the tail in the y-z plane in GSM coordinates which is similar to the empirical model of Fairfield. The entire neutral sheet shifts in the north-south
direction as the dipole tilt is changed. The position of the neutral sheet results from the requirement that the earthward magnetic flux must equal the tailward flux
for all tilt angles.

Laboratory Evaluation of the IMF Control of the magnetosphere
Shigeyuki Minami
Department of Electrical Engineering, Osaka City University
As part of a continuing series of the terrella simulation experiments [Minami
and Takeya, 1985a, 1985b], we report here an attempt to investigate a laboratory
evaluation of the IMF control of the configuration of the magnetosphere. A quan-
titative study of the particle entrance of the solar wind into the magnetosphere has
been made [Minami and Akasofu, 1986]. Digitized plasma column density intruded
into the simulated magnetosphere was observed by the time exposure photograph with
different IMF Bz conditions. The result suggested that the amount of the solar
wind plasma entered into the magnetosphere is directly controlled by Bz [Minami and
Akasofu, 1987]. This stored kinetic energy dependence on the Bz values seems to
show the same tendency as the stored energy dependences on Bz values analyzed
previously.
A set of photographs of the simulated magnetosphere with nine different Bz's
used for the analysis is shown in Figure 1. Figure 2 indicate the deduced plasma
content stored in the simulated magnetosphere dependence on Bz. From Figure 1,
one can fine that the size of the magnetosphere is also controlled by IMF Bz. The
magnetosphere size shrinks as the IMF changes from southward to northward as
shown in Figure 3.
Further analysis, changes of Bx, By values, should inform us more informations
for IMF control of an evident energy transfer of the solar wind related to the ac-
tual magnetosphere.

Large east-west magnetic perturbations (which were associated with substorms and are ascribable
to field-aligned currents) have been observed on the nightside magnetosphere by the ANPTE/CCE
magnetic field experiment. Substorms analized here showed the driven process phase plus subsequent
unloading phase. The driven phase is characterized by one or two hours development of polar-cap
ionospheric sunward current. The onset of the unloading phase is signified by a sharp development
of polar-cap dawnward current, which implies the occurrence of large westward auroral electrojet.
By the AMPTE/CCE magnetic field data, the field-aligned currents begun to develop almost simultane-
ously with the onset of the unloading phase (i.e. the onset of e sharp deflection of polar cap
ionospheric current vector) regardless of the spacecraft positions in the nightside magnetotail.
These field-aligned currents exhibited the Region 1 plus Region 2 paired current system and are
thought to be connected to the westward auroral electrojet. So-called geomagnetic dipolarization
effects were observed after the onset of these field-aligned currents by the same spacecraft.
The time delay ranged from--10 to-30 minutes. We suggest that the definite developments of paired
field-aligned currents as observed here by the AMPTE/CCE give some feedback effects to the magneto-
tail so as to promote the geomagnetic dipolarizations there. Present findings of these substorm-
related field-aligned currents present distinct pictures from the so-called current-wedge model in
the past studies.

Cosmic Noise Absorption Observed with Scanning Beam Riometer at a Time of SSC-Triggered Substorm
Takashi KIKUCHI* and Hisao YAMAGISHI**
* Radio Research Laboratory, Koganei, Tokyo 184
** National Institute of Polar Research , Itabashi, Tokyo 173
This paper reports latitudinal and temporal variations of cosmic noise absorptions (CNA)
associated with a storm sudden commencement (SSC) and substorm, observed with the scanning beam
riometer at Syowa station (L = 6.1). The scanning beam riometer scans a narror antenna beam (beam width = 13°) between ±30° in zenith angle ( ±50 km at 90 km height) in the magnetic north-south and
east-west directions at a speed of 6°/sec. This system detects spatial variations of CNA with a
spatial resolution of 10 km.
Figure 1 shows scanning beam riometer data obtained at a time of SSC and the succeeding
substorm. Figure 1 contains 11 curves for the NS scanning (upper part), 11 for EW scanning (lower
part), 4 curves for fixed direction beams, zenith and north, south and west at a zenith angle of 30°, as well as ULF D-component, dD/dt. The SSC took place at 2353 UT, on November 3, 1986 and
the substorm followed at 0001:30 UT, on November 4, 1986. Onsets of SSC and substorm are indicated with A and B by the curve of ULF D in Figure 1. The SSC caused a CNA in the equatorward region of
the field of view of the scanning beam riometer, at 2354 UT, 1 min later than the SSC onset (shown
with C). This CNA propagated equatorward at a speed of 500 m/s. On the other hand, a large magnitude CNA occurred simultaneously with the occurrence of the geomagnetic substorm. The
substorm-associated CNA first appeared in the equatorward region (shown with D) and moved poleward
at a speed of 5.8 km/s. The magnitude of CNA increased with increasing latitude. These observational results suggest the following points:
The SSC-associated CNA observed in the midnight was caused by an earthward propagation of a
compressional hydromagnetic wave in the nightside magnetosphere, while the SSC observed on the
ground propagated directly from the dayside. The region of quasi-trapped electrons responsible for the CNA was located equatorward of Syowa station. The substorm started equatorward of Syowa station
and expanded poleward with increasing its magnitude.

E region plasma waves observed by 50 MHz radar
at Syowa Station
T. Tanaka, T. Ogawa and K. Igarashi
(Radio Research Laboratory)
Electron density irregularities in the auroral E region were observed by a 50 MHz Doppler radar at Syowa Station. In these observations, electrostatic and ULF plasma waves were detected in various forms. ULF waves were observed as periodic fluctuations of irregularity occurrences in the spatial and temporal distributions, while elecrtostatic waves were detected as characteristic spectra in the Doppler velocities of irregularities. In this report, some initial results are shown for the analyses of these plasma waves. At Syowa Station, irregularity distributions are observed over long ranges
by using the antenna beam toward off-directions from geomagnetic south. From these observations, structures of periodic irregularities were obtained. By comparing these results with ground magnetic perturbations, it is shown that the amplitude of ground magnetic perturbations in ULF range is controlled by the wavelength of ULF waves in the ionosphere. Waves with wavelength about 150 km were not detected from ground magnetic data. These results indicate that ground magnetic perturbations are generated by Hall currents in the E region.
Seen from characteristic features of Doppler spectra, there are three types of irregularities called type I, type II and type III. Type I irregularities
produce narrow spectra associated with Doppler velocities near the ion acoustic speed (i.e., 350 m/s), and type II irregularities produce broad spectra associated with lower velocities. These two types of irregularities were observed at small magnetic aspect angles. On the other hand, type III irregularities which produce narrow spectra with nearly constant Doppler shifts well below the ion acoustic speed were observed at larger magnetic aspect angles than do type I and II. The Doppler shifts of some of type III irregularities were centered at 25 Hz, suggesting the ion cyclotron waves near the gyrofrequency of molecular ions (i.e., NO+,02 ). However, type III irregularities with the Doppler shift much smaller than the gyrofrequency of molecular ions were occasionally observed.

(Radio Res. Lab.) (NIPR)
Simultaneous observations of radio and optica1 (4278 A) auroras in a common area (15x20 km) at100 km altitude over Mizuho Station were made during August-October, 1985. Radio aurora was
observed by a 50 MHz DoPPler radar at Syowa Station and optical aurora by a photometer with a view
angle of about 7° at Mizuho. It is confirmed that the radar echo intensity (electric field
strength) within an auroral arc is supPressed, and found that the DopPler spectra of radar echoes
are independent of auroral forms.

Electron density and temperature observat二ions by Ohzora satellite have
provided quantitative results on t二he amplitude and scale size distribution ofthe plasma irregulari七ies in 七he high--latitude 七〇pside ionosphere. The size of
t二he irregularit二ies is found to be highly variable, dimensions typically ranging
from a few km to a few hundred km. The satellite observations show three areas
of irregularities in the high-la七it二ude ionosphere, which are re!at二ed to t二he
trough, the auroral oval and the polar cap enhancement. Good correlation
between the elec七ron density and electron temperat二ure irregularities is
obtained in the auroral regions, but significant phase difference of the
irregularities is found. The result suggests that the dynamics of high-latitude
ionosphere is important to the distribution of plasma irregularities.

Statistical study on the conjugacy of geomagnetic disturbances in the auroral region
Satoru TSUNOMURA
Kakioka Magnetic Observatory, Kakioka, Ibaraki, 315-01 Japan
Correlationship of upper atmospheric phenomena ( geomagnetic disturbances, ULF waves,
VLF-ELF emissions, auroras and auroral associated phenomena ) between north and south
auroral regions have been investigated by many researchers since the IGY ( Nagata, 1987 ).
From the results, it is recognized that each phenomenon has a good correlation between
the north and the south conjugate points of auroral regions for the first order of
approximation. However, most of these studies discuss each phenomenon separately and
some of them are based on a small number of events because of the insufficiency of
the storage of the data. Meanwhile, both of the theoretical and the data analysis of
upper atmospheric phenomena have progressed very much for these two decades and the
conjugate study must be made systematically on the basis of the theories and/or the models
which are now accepted. In this study, we investigate the cojugacy of upper atmospheric
phenomena ( especially geomagnetic disturbances ) as one of the researches to approach
the quantitative understanding of the whole magnetospheric configuration for any conditions.
For the first step, the effect of the ionospheric conductivity asymmetry is examined.
In order to discuss this matter, the seasonal variations of ssc amplitudes is investigated
statistically.
The statistical analysis of the direct comparison between the data of Raykjavik and
Syowa shows a trendency that the ratio of the ssc amplitude (All) at the north hemisphere
to that at the south is larger in winter seasons of the north ( Nagata et al.,1966 ).
From the global data analysis ( Araki, 1977 ), it is regarded most probable that ssc's in
high latitudes are mainly due to the ionospheric currents driven by the enhanced dawn to dusk
electric fields induced in the magnetosphere and the amplitudes of ssc's must have positive
correlationship with the ionospheric conductivity. In the present paper, correlation
analysis will be made including the effect of the local time ( not the magnetic local time )
variation of ssc amplitude at each station.

Kp-dependence of the Conjugate point of Syowa Station
H.Nakajima, H.Fukunishi, and T.Ono*
Upper Atmosphere and Space Research Tohoku University
*National Institute of Polar Research
Laboratory,
The 25th(1984) and 26th(1985) wintering parties of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition operated a monochromatic all-sky TV camera at Syowa Station in Antarctica. An all-sky TV camera was also operated in August-September in 1984, 1985, and 1986 at Husafell in Iceland, which is the geomagnetic conjugate point of Syowa Station. During these observation periods, the DMSP-F6 and -F7 satellites have often transversed the regions covered by the TV cameras.
The conjugate observations of visible auroras are only possible during short periods (in March or in September) when both two conjugate stations have dark nights. It has been reported that faint discrete auroras were identified in both conjugate areas with a small displacement (0.5°) in invariant latitude in IGRF
model(*1). The daily variation in the conjugate point location of Syowa Station for different geomagnetic activity conditions was also calculated using Tsyganenko-Usmanov 1982 (T-U 1982) external magnetic field model(*2). As a result, it has been found that the daily variation of the conjugate point in winter solstice season (in June) is larger than that of in autumnal equinox (in September). Ne-vertheless, it is impossible to check it up using only aurora data because of the reason as mentioned above.
Therefore, we have tried to compare the particle data of the DMSP satellite with the all-sky TV camera data. We have picked up several auroral events in which the DMSP magnetic footpoints at 110km level are located within 300km from the conjugate point of Syowa Station. By comparing the position of discrete arcs with the inverted-V type particle precipitating region, we have found some inte-resting features about the behavior of geomagnetic conjugate point;
1) Tnere are some displacements of conjugate point by the IGRF model. However, when we apply the T-U 1982 external model, the displacements become less.
2) The geomagnetic conjugacy is related to the Kp-index. When Kp is less than about 3-, the geomagnetic conjugate point determined by this method is well co-
incident with that calculated by the T-U 1982 model. However, when Kp is more than 3+, it is significantly different from the calculated conjugate point.
We thank WDC-C2 for Aurora for their kind offer to use the DMSP particle data.

STUDY OF ULF WAVES SIMULTANEOUSLY OBSERVED AT FOUR STATIONS IN ICELAND
Tonegawa, T. Ono, H. Yamagishi, and M. Ejiri (Tokai Univ.) (NIPR)
In order to study propagation characteristics of ULF waves, fluxgate and induction magnetometers were installed at new observatory, Vop-nafjordur (VF) located on the same geomagnetic latitude of Husafell (HU). The longitudinal separation between the stations is about 5.6 degrees, and they make a dense network with other two stations, Isaf-jordur (IS) and Tjorness (TJ). The locations of the stations in Iceland and a conjugate point of Syowa in Antarctica are presented in Figure 1. Several types of ULF waves including three giant pulsations (Pg) were simultaneously observed at the stations for the campaign period from August 22 to September 10. A typical example of Pg event is presented in Figure 2. The wave form shows sinusoidal oscillation dominantly in the D component at lower latitudes, HU, Tj, and VF (L1- 6.0-6.4), while the amplitude is very weak at the highest latitude, IS
(IA6.9). This indicates that the wave is localized in latitude. It is also shown in the figure that the Pg is a westward traveling wave. Preliminary results of phase and polarization analysis of the observed waves will be reported.

QUIET TIME POLAR AURORAL DISTRIBUTIONS

ABSTRACT
Quiet time global auroral distribution has not been understand due to the lack of sufficient observations attributed to the infrequent truly quiet condition and, more importantly, the very low auroral emission intensities in the visible wavelengths which are difficult to observe. Based on measurements made by DMSP series of satellites, the electron precipitations extend to rather high latitude above 80° gm lat. However, the DMSP optical images did not reveal global auroral configuration. By using the recent UV auroral imagers, the quiet time polar auroral distributions was recorded. A very small polar cap and the expanded auroral oval are frequently observed. In this paper, quiet time optical images from ISIS-2, DE, Viking and Polar Bear spacecraft are compared with DMSP quiet time particle precipitations. It is obvious to us that the quiet time auroral distribution can be explained by the
poleward widening of the dawn and dusk parts of the auroral oval. An elongated polar cap aligned in the noon-midnight orientation is the characteristic shape of the quiet time polar cap.

Occurrence condition of the bright transpolar arc
1 K. Makita and C.-I. Meng
12 TakushokuUniversity , Applied Physics Lab. Johns Hopkins Uni.
On the basis of auroral particle and image data obtained by DMSP/F6 satellite, the characteristics of the transpolar arc in the polar cap was examined. The main purpose in our work is to make clear the occurrence condition of the sun-aligned arc and
0 aurora. Lassen and Danielsen (1978) and others showed that the sun-
aligned arc appears in the extremely high latitude region during the period of northward IMF and thus the geomagnetically quiet period. Usually the brightness of the sun-aligned arc is not so high as compared to that of the discrete arc in the auroral oval. On the other hand, Frank et al. (1986) and others reported that 9 aurora was uaually observed during the recovery phase of substorm and the northward IMF period.
From the five months' auroral image data. we examined typical sun-aligned arc and 9 aurora events, respectively. It was found that the magnitude of IMF B2 value was generally high and its average value was +8nT when the bright sun-aligned arc appears. It also suggests that the luminosity of sun-aligned arc is con-trolled by the magnitude of IMF B2 value. For example, there is
no clear sun-aligned arc in the polar cap during the period of small northward IMF (82(3nT). However, the sun-aligned arc seem to
be appearred from tfie dayside region as the increasing of northward IMF. This fact may indicate that the appearrence of the sun-aligned arc is directly related to the northward IMF
condition.
For 8 aurora events, we found that the magnitude of IMF 13, value is not so high and its average value is +0.8nT when aurora appeares. It is also found that the solar wind velocity is high and its average velocity is about 600 km/s. Generally, aurora is developed from the midnight auroral oval after the large substorm and their location is frequently corresponding to the poleward edge of the dawn or dusk auroral oval. These results suggest that the appearrence of 8 aurora is originated from plasma sheet particles which is related to the internal magnetos-pheric energy dissipation process.

OCCURRENCE PHASE OF AURORAL ACTIVITY AND VIEW LONGITUDE
OF THE HELIOSPHERIC NEUTRAL SHEET
T.Saito, T.Oki, S.-I.Akasofu, and C.Olmsted
(Tohoku Univ.)(Sendai) (Alaska Univ.)
1.Introduction
Auroral activity is often expressed with the 27-day recurrence diagram,
namely, epoch-versus-rotation diagram. The purpose of the present study is to
clarify the following questions: (1) why the recurrence is evident in sunspot
declining years, (2) how the recurrent periodicity goes in maximum phase, and
(3) why the aurora activity changes suddenly its phase from an epoch to another.
These problems are important for planning of auroral observation.
A view-longitude analysis is applied to the solar magnetic data from 1976 to
1986 (Solar cycle No.21). The result is compared with geomagnetic activity
data.
3.Results
(A) Equivalent solar centered dipole and the heliomagnetospheric neutral
sheet is most stably declined in excursion phase. The question (1) is at-
tributed to this simulation.
(B) A warped but clear sheet exists and rotates in reversing phase. The
characterisric periodicity (2) is attributed to this situation.
(C) The auroral change of (3) is revealed to be associated with sudden change
of the view longitude.
(D) The characteristics (A) — (C) of the neutral sheet is physically explained
by the three-dipole model with one axial centered dipole and two equatorial
photospheric dipoles. Figure 1 gives a stereographic expression of the model
for solar rotation No.1720 in excursion phase.

SIMULTANEOUS MULTI-SATELLITE OBSERVATION OF THE AURORAL OVAL
Ching-I . Meng, Pete F. Bythrow and Ray A. Greenwald

ABSTRACT
This is a report on a nearly simultaneous observation of the auroral oval made by Polar Bear, HILAT and DMSP satellite. This case study enabled us to investigate the afternoon Dart of the oval based on auroral image, particle
precipitation, and magnetic field perturbation. Thus, the optical emissions, energy deposition and charge carries and field aligned current across the afternoon oval are measured simultaneously. It is found that the most intense UV auroral emission was co-located with structure embedded within the region 1 current system.

Temporal Variation of the Auroral Conjugacy in Syowa-Iceland Pair
Takeo Hirasawa, Takayuki Ono (National Institute of Polar Research)
Abstract
The Syowa-Iceland conjugate pair stations (at Lg....16) are located in the auroral zone and
the two sites are suitable for obsering the conjugate visible auroras from the ground.
Observational results of ground bassed Syowa-Iceland conjugate visible aurora showed that
the location of the conjugate auroras observed at Husafell (67.67 ° N, 21.03° W) in Iceland
shifted year by year inlatitude derection between the 1978 campaign and the 1984 campaign.
This difference seems to be caused mainly by the secular variation of conjugate pointlocation.
In order to evaluate the variation of conjugacy in Syowa-Iceland pair, Ono (1987) examined the
secular variation of the geomagnetic absolute values at Syowa Station in Antarctica and Leivogur
Magnetic Observatory in Iceland, and calculated the conjugate point of Syowa Station and
Leivogur by carrying out the field line tracing with reliable geomagnetic and magnetospheric
field models.
Figure 1 gives the secular variations in the conjugate points of Syowa Station from
1960 to 1990. The 'conjugate point' in Fig.1 is the pont where a field line, starting from an
altitude of 110 km above the station, reaches the same level in the opposite hemisphere. The
position is calculated with the IGRF model for each year. As shown in Fig.1, the conjugate
point of Syowa Station moved from a south-west area to a middle-north area (about 250 km in
distance) in Iceland during the last 30 years. Especially after 1975, the movement of the
conjugate point speeded up, in association with a rapid decrease in the westward declination at
Leirvogur. In 1985, the conjugate point is located just in the middle between Husafell and
Tjornes Stations.
This traveling feature affects the conjugacies of auroral, geomagnetic and CNA phenomena
observed at a fixed conjugate-pair stations in Syowa-Iceland areas. For example, the region of
conjugate visible auroras observed at Husafell significantly shifted in latitude during 1978 to
1984 (MAKITA et al., 1981; SATO et al., 1986). The shift is qualitatively consistent with the
calculated results.

Relationship between aurora and auroral absorption observed by scanning-beam
riometer at Syowa Station, Antarctica
Hisao Yamagishi1, Takashi Kikuchi2, Syuichi Ikeda3 and Takeo Yoshino3
1`Radio National Inst. Polar Res.Radio Res. Lab.Univ. Electro-Communications
This paper reports spatial relationship between the region of auroal radio
wave absorption (AA) and luminous aurora observed respectively with a
scanning-beam riometer and a scanning photometer at Syowa Station, Antarctica.
The Scanning-beam riomter scans a narrow antenna beam (beam width 13°) stepwise
in the magnetic meridian in zenith angle of 30° south to 30° north at a speed of
6°/s, while the scanning photometer scans the sky from horizon to horizon in the
magnetic meridian at the same speed. Spatial resolution of the both instruments
is about 10 km at an altitude of 100 km.
The spatial relationship between aurora and AA has been studied since 1960s
by using multi-beam riometers (Kavadas, 1961; Ansari, 1964) and closely-spaced
riometer chain observations (Basler, 1963; Hargreaves at al., 1975; Berkey et
al., 1980). Ansari (1964) classified AA into two categories : the one observed
in 20 - 02 MLT, correlates well with auroral intensity variation, and is limited
to luminous region of the sky (category 1), and the other observed in
postmidnight hours, does not correlate with auroral intensity variation, and is
not limited to luminous region of the sky (category 2). It was further found
from riometer chain observation that strong AA tends to occur in the diffuse
auroral region near the equatorward edge of the auroral oval in the morning
sector (Berkey et al., 1980). In these study, however, the spatial relationship
between aurora and AA was not clear due to limited spatial resolution of
riometer observations. Hence, present study aims at making clear the above
point by means of high spatial resolution of the scanning-beam riometer.
Typical observational results are shown in the following.
Figure 1 shows auroral intensity at 557.7 nm observed by the scanning
photometer (upper panel) and category 1 AA observed by the scanning-beam riomter
(lower panel) at the time of local auroral break up. Eleven curves in each
panel are obtained from different field-of-view directions allocated at every 6°
in zenith angle from 30° south to 30° north. Spatial separation of each curve
is about 10 km at 100 km altitude. South direction corresponds to higher
latitudes. A localized luminosity enhancement is found near the zenith at
1948 UT in the upper panel. However, absorption curves in the lower panel show
that AA intensity distribution is almost uniform in N-S direction.
Figure 2 compares auroral intensity (upper panel) and category 2 AA (lower
panel) observed in the post break up phase. In the lower panel, two AA events
are found at 2310-2315 UT and 2320-2340 UT. The former is associated with
auroral arcs, while the latter is associated with very weak aurora, and shows

As on of the ground-based upper atmosphere
observatjons at Syowa Station, Antarctica,
during the forthcoming STEP period, a HF radar
experiment for exploring the auroral and po-
1ar cap ionospheres ls proposed. Now, we have
two VHF (50 and 1!2 MHz) DoPP]er radars at
Syowa for detecting radio auroras in the E-
region at ranges of 250 - 400 km in the south・
These radars, however, cannot exPlore Vne 「e-
gions beyond 400 km or more, i・e・, the cleft
and the po]ar cap, so that a HF radar which can
detect back-scattered echoes from far distant
regions (a few thousand km) is proposed here・
The HF radar measures back-scattered power
and DoPPler spectrum due to ionospheric irregu-
1arities in the E- and F-regions. Its useful-
ness for studying Polar ionospheric processes
]ike plasma convection (drift ve]ocity) in the
polar cap, c'left and auroral regions and irre-
gularlty formation and dissipation mechanisms
have been a'lready demonstrated by the Goose Bay
radar (established in 1983) and others in the
northern hemisphere.
The proposed Syowa Station HF radar can
observe the F-region ionosphere over the Antar--
ctic Continent, and more importantly, thfis
radar in cooperation with the Halley Bay radar
(British Antarctic Survey) can constitute a
twin HF radar system which enables to determine
the two-dimensional f]ow pattern of ionospheric
plasmas. The Halley Bay radar is now under
construction and will begin its operatjon at
the beginning of 1988.
An ionospheric volumeう11uminated commonly
by the Antarctic twin radras is geomagnetically
connected with that over Greenland which is
also covered by the existing twin HF radars
(one at Goose Bay operated by the Applied Phys-・
ics Laboratoγ'y of Johns Hopkins University and
the other at Scheffervi1]e operated by the
University of Toulon) in Quebec, Canada. Con-
jugate observations of plasma convection and
irregularities are quite important for under-
standing similarities and dissimi]arities of
the phenomena between both hemispheres and for
diagnostics of the whole magnetosphere・
It is stressed that the international cooP-
eration among related contries is highly desi-
rable to obtain fruうtful results.

Development of a Fabry-Perot Doppler Imaging System:
The Design and Preliminary Evaluation of a Proto-Model
Okano, S., H. Nakajima, H. Fukunishi AT. Ono, anel. Hirasawa
Upper Atmosphere and Space Research Laboratory, Tohoku University *National Institute of Polar Research
We have started the development of a Fabry-Perot Doppler Imaging System (FPDIS) which enables us to measure 2-dimensional distributions of the Doppler shift and width of an aurora and/or airglow emission line thereby making it possible to determine
the spatial distribution of the line-of-sight component of wind vector and the temperature in the thermosphere.
The principle of the FPDIS is as follows: Monochromatic image of aurora is first focused by a fish-eye lens. Then the divergence of the beam is reduced to a small angle by a combination of relay lenses. The nearly collimated beam is passed through an FPI and focused to produce interference fringes (concentric multiple rings). The Doppler shift and width can be measured from the displacement of the fringe from a concentric ring and the width of the fringe, respectively. Since a point on the focal
plane has one-to-one correspondence to a point in the sky, 2-dimensional recording of the fringes leads to the measurements of 2-dimensional distribution of the Doppler
quantities. Based on such design principle, we
have constructed a proto-model FPDIS. A test carried out with a 632.8nm He-Ne laser as a source showed that the light gathered from 150° full field of view was transformed to a beam with divergence of 0.73° (half-angle) to pass through an FPI of 60mm clear aperture with 20mm spacing. Fringes of 6 successive orders were focused. Measurements on the linearity between the object and image spaces and on the transmittance of the optical system were made. An imaging photon counting detector, whose realization encouraged the development of FPDIS, will be installed very shortly to the proto-model. It is further planned to construct an FPDIS with a larger etalon to gain increased throughput. Sensitivity estimation was made on the basis of the evaluation of the proto-model (Fig. 1). It is expected that a 2-dimensional distribution of the Doppler quantities can be observed less than 5 minutes of time integration for an aurora of 1kR emission rate by the larger model.

REMOTE SENSING OF AURORA AND ULTRAVIOLET EMISSIONS
Ching-I. Meng The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory
Laurel, Maryland 20707-6099 U.S.A.
ABSTRACT
This presentation consists of three parts. Evolution of the remote sensing of the auroral display is reviewed first. It gives a brief description in various remote sensing techniques used and the significant scientific contributions in each state of progress. The second part discusses the ultraviolet emissions of the aurora phenomenon and their variations with the geomagnetic activity. The comparison of auroral UV emissions with the corresponding dayglow emissions is made in order to determine the wavelengths which can provide the highest contrast between aurora and dayglow for the
purpose of imaging aurora in sunlit conditions. The final part of this talk is a summary of results from recently flown spaceborne auroral imagers.

Characteristics of ssc associated magnetic pulsations (Psc)
Masayuki KUWASHIMA
Kakioka Magnetic Observatory, Kakioka IBARAKI 315-O1,Japan
The large scale impulsive disturbances as ssc or si are important
energy sources for the generation of magnetic pulsations. The existence of
ssc-associated magnetic pulsations has been already suggested more than
twenty years ago( Saito and Matsushita,1967; Saito,1969). Those ssc-associated
magnetic pulsations have been studied under the name of Psc. In the recent
years, characteristics of Psc are further clarified due to improvements in
observational techniques, which are concurrent magnetic observations by
ground-based magnetometer chains from high- to low-latitudes ,multiple
satellite observations in the magnetosphere, for example. In the present
Paper, recent results for Psc will be briefly reviewed, then problems reserved
to be unresolved will be discussed.
1.Psc in the magnetosphere:
Multiple satellite observations in the magnetosphere have presented
several important results for understanding the generation mechanism of Psc.
One of them is finding of the clear local time asymmetry for the initial
movement of Psc magnetic oscillations. They start from the eastward movement
in the mornig hours, while they start from the westward movement in the evening
hours at the geosynchronous altitude in the magnetosphere. Those results
indicate sudden depression of the magnetic field lines in the perpendicular
plane to the ambient magnetic field direction. That perpendicular signal will
propagate along the field lines with Alfevn velocity causing toroidal MHD
resonant oscillations , Psc.
2.Psc at the high latitudes:
The existence of ssc-associated toroidal MHD standing oscillations
has been clarified by dense magnetometer station network at the high-latitudes.
The Psc oscillations observed at the longitudinal array along the similar
L-shell show the same waveforms without any phase difference with each other,
suggesting a very low azimuthal wave number. That result satisfies the condition
for the excitation of the toroidal mode MHD oscillations.
3.Psc at the low latitudes:
There are many unresolved problems for the low-latitude ssc-associated
magnetic pulsations, Psc 2-3. The characteristics of the low-latitude Psc are
studied using the data obtained at Japanese station network. The observational
results suggest the excitaion of Psc oscillations along the magnetic field lines
which are anchored around Japaneses station network.
Those results will be discussed in the present paper.

ABSTRACT
IMPULSIVE MAGNETIC VARIATIONS NEAR THE POLAR CUSP REGION
S. Kokubunl, T. Yamamoto', H. Kawanol, K. Takahashi2 and L.J. Zanetti2
Geophysics Research Laboratory , University of Tokyo, Tokyo 113 Japan
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory , Laurel MD
Although irregular natures of magnetic
variations in the daytime polar region have long
been known, essential properties of these
daytime fluctuations have not yet been
established in detail. Finding of flux transfer
events(FTE) by ISEE observations (Russell and
Elphic, 1978,1979) has stimulated to study
dayside phenomena such as impulsive magnetic
variations (Lanzerotti et al., 1986) and dayside
auroras near the cusp region(e.g. Sandholt et
al., 1986). The possible ground signatures of
FTE's have been discussed by Southwood
(1985,1987). He pointed out that the convection
of the flux tube in the ionosphere will generate
two convection vortices around the flux tube.
Another model has been proposed by Lee and
Fu(1985).
We have examined impulsive fluctuations and
Pc5 pulsations at high latitudes in the morning-
noon region region, using digital magnetic data
from 13 Canadian magneic observatories, GOES 5,
GOES 6 and AMPTE/CCE spacecraft, in addition to
data obtained during our global campaign in
December, 1985 - February, 1986. Goes 5 and 6
satellites were located at synchronous altitude
in longitudes of 74W and 108W, respectively.
The geomagnetically conjugate point of GOES 5 is
close to Great Whale River. That of GOES 6 is
estimated to be in northern Manitoba, Canada.
AMPTE/CCE has an orbital period of 15.7 hours,
an apogee of 8.8 Re, and an inclination of 4 .8 degrees.
In examining the magnetosphere-ground
correlation of daytime phenomena, we note that
impulsive variations with time scale of several
minutes, observed both at synchronous satellites
and at stations near the cusp latitude , are often associated with the occurrence of Pc5
pulsations at auroral stations. Preliminary
results may be summarized as follows:
1. Impulsive magnetic variations with time
scale of several minutes and amplitude of more
than 100 nT are often observed in the region of
latitude about 75 degrees. The ground-correlated
impulsive variation is also observed at
synchronous orbit and near the apogee of
AMPTE/CCE. Forms of variation in space are
similar to those of flux transfer events which
are identified near the magnetopause. A bimodal
feature is observed in the radial component,
while a one-sided pulse is usually seen in the
compressional component. Signature in the
azimuthal component is not so clear as compared
with those in the other components.
2. Impulsive variations at GOES 6 occur
with a delay of about 2 minutes behind those at
GOES 5, indicating a westward propagation.
We foud no observable time delay in the radial
propagation in comparison of data from GOES and
AMPTE spacecraft. Magnitudes of impulsive
variations are about 10 nT at most.
3. Impulsive variations recorded at higher
latitude stations are often associated with Pc5
oscilations at staions of latitudes below 70
degrees.
4. Pc5 pulsations are often observed
simultaneously at GOES 5 and 6. The frequency of
Pc5 wave is not necessarily the same at both
satellites. In such cases the frequency at GOES
5, which is situated at a lager L shell as
compared with GOES 6, is generally lower than
that at GOES 6.
5. Pc5 waves generally show the feature of
westward propagation in the prenoon sector.

PARTICLE PRECIPITATION ASSOCIATED WITH IPDP EVENTS
Hiroshi Fukunishil and Kanji Hayashi2
1Upper Atmosphere and Space Research Laboratory, Tohoku University,
Sendai 980, Japan 2Geophysical Research Laboratory, University of Tokyo, Tokyo 113, Japan
Relationships between precipitating particles and IPDP events have been studied using the DMSP particle data and the ULF and CNA data acquired at the conjugate—pair stations Syowa—Husafell in 1985. The number of IPDP events ob— served at the Syowa—Husafell conjugate stations in 1985 was 96. The twelve IPDP events were selected using a criterion that the DMSP satellite passed within 500 km from Syowa or Husafell during the events. Five events out of these events were accompanied by cosmic noise absorption. An example is shown in Fig. 1.It is found that intense proton preciRitation with energy flux ofnJ0.1 erg /cm'sr sec and number flux of,u3x10°/cm'sr sec occurred in the region between 66.5 and 68.7 in corrected magnetic latitude, while an enhancement of electron precipitation was not observed in this region. Therefore the cosmic noise ab— sorption event observed at Syowa during the IPDP event appears to be caused by precipitating electrons with energy higher than 30 keV, which is the upper limit of the DMSP particle detector. As suggested by Thorne and Kennel (1971), this absorption event appears to be due to precipitation of relativistic (>1 MeV) electrons scattered by ion cyclotron waves.
The source regions of IPDP events determined by Hayashi et al. (1987) using the induction magnetometer data obtained from 30 stations in the North American territory were also well coincident with the regions of intense proton precipitation. stabilities in Magnetospheres and at Comets, pp. 333-336, Sendai, October 1987. Thorne, R.M., and C.F. Kennel, J. Geophys. Res., 76, 4446, 1971.

RELATIONS OF Pi 1-2 MAGNETIC PULSATIONS AT L = 1.3-2.1
TO SUBSTORM-ASSOCIATED PHENOMENA AT AMPTE/CCE

In order to clarify relationships between substorm-associated variations in
the magnetotail and low-latitude Pi 2 pulsations on the ground, we analyzed the
magnetic data from the conjugate stations around L = 1.3 - 2.1 and ?^,,,1400, and
the AMPTE /CCE location in the midnight sector during 1130 - 1830 UT from August 9
to September 4, 1986. From the correlation analysis, it is found that low-
latitude Pi 2 pulsations occur coincidently with onsets of dipolarizations during
substorms at R = 8-9 RE near midplane of the magnetotail, from where the dipolari-
zation process propagates earthward with an average speed of 2.5 RE/3 min 90
Km/s. The substorm-associated dipolarization changes are believed to appear in a
localized region in the near-earth magnetotail, AUG.28, 1986 12hUT 15h
therefore, rarely the spacecraft can not detect
the dipolarization changes. In the case of

Pi2 pulsations observed at AMPTE/CCE and
on the ground, Syowa-Iceland conjugate stations
Kokubun, S.*, K. Takahashi**, T.Sakurai+, Y. Tonegawa+ and U. Yamagishi++
Abstract
The AMPTE/CCE magnetometer observed substorms occurring between 2300 UT of
day 142 (May 22) and 0300 UT of day 143 (May 23), 1985. During this time in-
terval individual five magnetic pulsations were observed successively. These
magnetic pulsations were also observed on the ground at a high-latitude
conjugate-pair stations, Syowa in Antarctica and Husafell in Iceland, near L=
6.1. At this moment these stations were located almost at the same magnetic
local time meridian to that of the satellite. The pulsations, thus were iden-
tified as Pi 2 magnetic pulsations typical of the onset of a magnetospheric
substorm. In the magnetosphere these magnetic pulsations showed a compres-
sional character rather than that of Alfven wave and were observed in anticor-
relation with oscillations of energetic ions with energy range around 10 Kev,
indicating a diamagnetic property. The energetic ions were dominated with 90
degrees pitch angle ions. An examination on phase relation of these Pi 2's ob-
served at the conjugate stations revealed that these Pi 2's oscillated with an
odd mode fundamental standing oscillation. The observed facts suggest that os-
cillation mechanism belongs to some type of wave -particle interaction. The
odd mode fundamental oscillations of the Pi 2's indicate that the mechanism
may be a drift-resonance instability, but not a bounce resonance instability.
The satellite observed facts of pitch angle distribution, dominated with 90
degrees and anticorrelation between the magnetic field and the energetic ions
suggest that the most plausible mechanism might he a drift-mirror type
instability.

The four electron wave modes which accompany the aurora are identified
using DE-1 not only by their appearance on the satellite radio
spectrograms, but also by measurements of their polarization and wave
arrival directions, and by ray tracing models of their propagation
behavior. The wave modes are analyzed using the polarization sense
measured from two electric antennas, the arrival directions derived from
the dip of the spin-modulated amplitude measurements, and the ray path
calculations under the plasma cavity model, in addition to the
conventional 'interpretation of wave cutffs and resonances with the
spectrograms. The most prominent, of course, is the auroral kilometric
radiation, or 'AKR', which is generated primarily in the extraordinary
mode near the electron cyclotron frequency, but which also exhibits a
weaker ordinary mode (0-mode) component that seems to originate from the
same location. Next most prominent is the funnel-shaped whistler mode
auroral hiss which originate below the altitudes of DE-1 and at
frequencies well below the local cyclotron frequency. It is confirmed
that their propagation directions are at the resonance cone angles. For a
particular case studied in detail, these waves were found to originate
from the same or similar field lines at the poleward edge of the auroral
plasma cavity. The Z-mode auroral radiation was found to originate from
approximately this same location, below the satellite and at the poleward
edge of the cavity, and not from the local cyclotron frequency. Another
0-mode component was identified within the cavity, which also seemed to be
generated near its poleward edge and to be guided to higher altitudes.
Their wave normal angles are small with respect to the geomagnetic field.
Finally, at the funnel source field line, there seemed to be Z-mode emis-
sions extending from near the Z-mode cutoff at quite low frequencies, up
to and above the plasma frequency.

A SIMULATION OF THE AURORAL IONOSPHERE
--- Comment ---
In order to elucidate the propagation of auroral hiss in the ionosphere and
the transmission through the lower ionosphere, the auroral ionosphere is simulated
as follows. The total elctron density(N) is expressed as a product of three
factors with different contributions :
N = NDE x NLIONO x NAURORA
NDI is a diffusive equilibrium model for the magnetosphere. NLIONO is an appropriate
reduction factor expressing the effect of the lower ionosphere. NAURORA indicate
a contribution factor of the enhanced ionization of the auroral ionosphere at lower
altitudes. Using the above equation, elctron density profiles are calculated in
the five models divided according to criteria of auroral activities. Characteristics
of the simulated models are shown in Table 1. Adequency of the simulation of the
;auroral ionosphere is indicated in comparison with elctron density profiles observed
on rockets in aurora over Syowa(Fig. 1) and is also confirmed by comparing between
30 MHz CNA levels expected in the simulated ionosphere and the observed CNA levels
,related to the electron densities measured by rocket in the ionosphere over Syowa.

IN THE PRE-MIDNIGHT
M. HAYAKAWA, Y. TANAKA and T.OKADA
Research Instititute of Atmospherics, Nagoya University, Toyokawa
Characteristics of pre-midnight substorm-associated VLF emissions are examined based on the data obtained by our VLF/ELF campaign during Nov 1978 to Feb 1979 at Brorfelde (L 3) and Chambon-la-Foret
(L 2),as well as ISIS satellite measurements. Two remarkable events are analysed and the following main properties have emerged ; (1) the emissions are of hiss-type and are excited mainly within the
plasmapause, (2) the emission activity is preceded by development of two subsequent substorms, and (3) the sharp increase of emission frequency at the first stage of the events is followed by its sub-sequent gradual decrease. The theoretical interpretation will be presented.

AURORAL HISS OBSERVED ON THE GROUND AND BY THE ROCKET
— Review —
Masanori NISHINO and Yoshihito Tanaka
Research Institute of Atmospherics, Nagoya University
We review the occurrence and the propagation of auroral hiss observed on the
ground and by the rocket at Syowa Station(geomagnetic lat. -700).
Based on the direction finding results(March-September, 1978) of auroral VLF hiss at Syowa, and an extensive ray tracing analysis and an estimation of transmission
loss in the simulated auroral ionosphere, the propagation of the ground-based auroral
hiss in the magnetosphere and the ionosphere is deduced ; incoherent transmission
of impulsive hiss with a wide frequency range(2100 kHz) from localized exit regions at the ionospheric level almost coincident with some localized regions of bright
electron auroras ; and non-ducted propagation of continuous hiss with a narrow 'frequency range( 4. 20 kHz) after emerging from a duct exit at higher altitudes(3,000- 5,000 km), and coherent transmission from an exit region at the ionospheric level
between Syowa and the location of a quiet auroral arc appearing poleward far from Byowa.
Electromagnetic noises with banded structure were observed on the sounding
rocket S-310JA-6 launched at night on 27 August 1978 from Syowa station, which showed a sharply defined lower cutoff at -4 kHz and a indefinite cutoff around 8 kHz
corresponding to the lower hybrid resonance frequency of the ambient plasma of the 'rocket l ocation. Directions of the wave and Poynting vectors and estimated wave
-:refracti ve indices indicate that the banded noises propagate with large wave normal angles to the geomagnetic field, down to the rocket. It may be suggested that such
nWises excited in the auroral ionosphere by energetic electron streams('-5keV) in a
;Landau instability process propagate down to the rocket.

Relations of Narrow-band Hiss with Geomagnetic Activity and Auroral Hiss
T. ONDOH Radio Research Laboratory, Tokyo 184
Narrow-band hisses around 5 kHz were observed most frequently by ISIS satellites
at geomagnetic invariant latitudes from 55° to 63° both in the northern and
southern hemispheres(Ondoh et al., 1981), and they interpreted the narrow-band hiss
by the cyclotron instabilities of several keV to a few ten kev electrons for the
feasible electron density of 10 - 103/cm3 in the vicinity of the equatorial plasma-
pause. Using the Radio and Space Data - ISIS VLF Data Received at Syowa Station,
Antarctica, Nos. 9, 13 and 15, RRL, we investigate statistically occurrence rela-
tions of the narrow-band hiss with the geomagnetic activity and the auroral hiss.
Statistical results obtained will be reported at the Symposium. Following
figures show examples of narrow-band hisses in the 5 kHz band observed by the
ISIS-2 on Oct. 16, 1982 (Kp = 2) and on April 24, 1982 (Kp = 5+).

(Phase Bunching)

We compare whistler mode auroral hiss emissions with funnel shaped emissions
as observed in the Spacelab-2 electron beam active experiment and computer
experiments. Spectra of f㎜el shaped auroral hiss emissions are explained in
terms of the group velocity and damping rate of vhistler modes waves at the
reSOnanCe COre.
