Eyebrows have been raised over an elected member of the Artesia City Coun-cil’s private home that is now the subject of an official review by building officials from both the city hall she was elected to represent and the Los Angeles County Building Inspectors Department.

At a meeting of the Artesia City Coun-cil this past week, the home of longtime Artesia City Councilwoman Sally Zuniga Flowers was placed under the public mi-croscope when an agenda item centered around five different building requirements and design conditions at the home she has lived in for the past few decades located on the 11800 block of Summer Avenue.

Flowers, the longest serving member on the current Artesia City Council, were first elected to the five member board in 1997.

On Tuesday three of her fellow coun-cil members, Mayor Victor Manalo, Vice Mayor John Lyons and Councilwoman Michele Diaz slapped five different conditions on her to bring her residence into compliance. Flowers and Council-man Tony Lima did not participate in the deliberation since the two are next door neighbors.

Flowers said that she had recently wanted to replace the aged roof at her property when, after inspection by city planning and county building official, she discovered that an unpermitted addition to her property had been completed in the past without her knowledge.

The property includes a two car garage that has an attached single occupancy apartment connected to it.

Flowers contends that the addition on her property had already existed prior to her purchasing the property 26 years ago, yet there appears to be no record of that addition on file at Artesia City Hall.

According to city documents obtained by Los Cerritos Community News, Flow-ers is quoted in a staff report that she had no knowledge and was unaware at the time of the purchasing the property that the ad-ditions were unpermitted.

John Matson, a well know local builder and architect has been retained person-ally by Flowers and claimed in testimony before the Artesia Planning Commission last month that the unpermitted additions to Flower’s property had been done back in the 1960’s prior to Flower’s purchase of the large ranch style estate that sits on nearly 10,000 square feet of property on one of the best known streets in Artesia.

Matson also claimed in testimony that the additions cannot be seen from the street and that none of Flowers long time neighbors had ever complained about the additions of the two-car garage and living quarter.

Documents also show that Flowers discovered that the additions were un-permitted only after a building official, inspecting the single-family residence for other reasons, discovered that the garage did not contain the enclosed covered patio or the second dwelling unit, on Flower’s property.

Flowers, in an interview with Los Cer-ritos Community News on Wednesday said that “she did nothing wrong” and that she has never been given “special privileges” because of her position as an elected city council member to bring her property into compliance.

According to Artesia City Attorney Kevin Ennis, Flowers will have a suffi-cient time frame to comply with the City Council decision. Ennis also pointed out that Building Inspectors for the County of Los Angeles will also have to review the improvements after they are completed.

When asked what would happen if county officials do not sign off on the proj-ect when concluded, Ennis said we will wait and see.

Flowers said that no one lives in the guest house and all she wanted was to get her roof replaced.

“I was shocked when I learned about the problem,” Flowers told LCCN.

“This was built more than 50 years ago, and no one is doing me any favors,” she said.

Flowers also stood firm that she had the support of four out of the five members of the Artesia Planning Commission and all three members of the city council who were eligible to vote on the agenda item. She also pointed to support from some of her neighbors who wrote letters on her be-half during the past several weeks since.

The entire 76 page report over the Flowers case can be found online at www.loscerritosnews.net.

Vietnam Veteran Tom Tislow accepts Certificate of Recognition from Congress-woman Linda Sanchez after being named Veteran of the Month for November. “It was an honor to meet and recognize Vietnam War veteran and Purple Heart recipi-ent, Tom Tislow, as Veteran of the Month, “ said the Congresswoman. “We owe Mr. Tislow a huge debt of gratitude for the sacrifice and bravery he showed during the Vietnam War. It is my hope that someday we can give Vietnam veterans, like Mr. Tislow, the proper homecoming they deserved, but never received, by establishing an annual ‘National Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day'. The Cerritos resident expressed surprise to his being designated Veteran of the month. He said he was honored. Tinslow joined the Marine Corp in 1966 and was deployed to Vietnam in April 1967 where he served in the 3rd Marine Division. With him is his wife.

OPINION & LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

First Fruitcake… Now Val Lynder

By Jerry Bernstein

I was talking on the telephone and didn’t notice VAL LYNDER, DEFEND-ER THAT IS TRUE come into the office. “You look good, “I said. She was wearing her trademark outfit, purple high heel tennis shoes with white polka dots and a matching skirt and jacket, She also carried her matching umbrella.

“Thank you,” she replied.“What brings you to this neck of the

woods, “ I asked.“If you must know I was visiting

in Los Angeles when I heard about the election in the city of Hawaiian Gar-dens.

Tell me about it,” she demanded.“Nothing to tell. There were two

incumbents seeking re-election and a pastor and former recalled Mayor who supported two other candidates.”

“A pastor,” she asked, surprise in her voice.

“That’s what I said.”“Don’t get snippety with me,” she

responded, banging her umbrella on my desk. “I asked a simple question.”

Ignoring her outburst, I continued. “It’s a long story, but the incumbents won and the IRS and Franchise Tax Board have been asked, and have now requested the audiotape of the event, to investigate the pastor’s church for violating his churches 501 (c) (3) non-profit status.

“VAL LYNDER looked at me in disbelief. “You mean he solicited funds through the church for the candidates he supported? “

That’s it,” I answered. “Not only that but he hurled thunderbolt accusations from his seat on the city council against anyone who opposed him or disagreed with him.

Well, I never!” she said. “What kind of pastor is he?’

“I can’t answer that, “ I replied, “but like you always say “It’ll come out in the wash.”

She looked at me a moment. I could see she wasn’t satisfied with my answers, but she had something else on her mind.

“Tell me about the school board elections,” she stated.

“Nothing to tell. I replied. The four incumbents won another four years on

the Board and the race to fill the vacancy on the board is still up in the air.”

I thought the election was over,” she said.

“Well only 22 votes separate the two leading candidates and votes are still being counted.”

“Interesting,” she commented. “ Do you think there will be a recount?

“I don’t know,” I answered. “We’ll have to wait and see.”

VAL LYNDER wasn’t done. “I understand Armin Reyes, who was re-elected to another four year has been called back to active duty by the Army for a little over a year. Is that true?”

“Yep, He announced it at the Nov. 15 school board meeting.”

Isn’t he the Board’s Vice President?” she asked.

“Correct.”“Well, isn’t he slated to become

Board President? “True, but we will just have to wait

until the board meets and see who is nominated.”

“What about Sophia Tse?“What about her?“She’s been on the school board for

four years and was just re-elected. Both times she garnered the largest amount of votes, but she hasn’t held any board office. Why?

“I can’t answer that,” I said. “I would imagine if Mr. Reyes is unable to hold the job because of his deployment, Olympia Chen might be selected. She is the board’s clerk.”

“I guest we will just have to wait, but like you often say, something’s not kosher.” With that she started to leave. “By the way, you didn’t seem surprised to see me?’

”Our Friend from Fruitcake, Florida told me he had bumped into you while picking up his tickets to fly home.”

“Oh. Well, until next time,” she said as she let the door close behind her.

Dear Editor:Congratulations to LCCN for the

great election coverage. The multiple platforms and mediums of getting through to each candidate kept the re-porting really dynamic and objective.

Randy, for one, certainly kept us at Team Johnson on our toes with pointed and direct questioning/interviews. It certainly challenged the candidate and campaign at all levels.

Thank you and your LCCN team for your support and cooperation.

Dear Editor:I voted this afternoon at Lee

Ware Rec Center in Hawaiian Gardens. Trimble's and Arroyo's election staff were electioneering steps away from the entrance of the polling place; saying vote for #17 and #21. Once inside, at the booth, I overheard another voter tell an elderly voter to vote for #17 and #21 in Spanish. (The polling people only understood English). I can't believe the extent to which these candidates have gone to ensure election to the council. I hope that you will investigate this. As for me I have already reported this to the city clerk and the registrar's office.

Sincerely, Rita G

Dear Editor:Since the Superintendent pretty

much put a fork in the subject of re-naming the Whitney multi-media train-ing center until well into 2012, it was a bit surprising to see “Name on File” try to use the issue as a jumping off point for another rambling, idle threat filled, hatchet job on councilman Mark Pulido (LCCN 11/11/11). If, for instance, any-one is buying into the silliness that Mr. Pulido should not even attend school board meetings because there is press-ing “city business to attend to” the same standard would seem to apply to the city mayor who also attended. This is the second time in three weeks that such a letter has been run in the paper, meaning LCCN is becoming a water carrier for these political cheap shots literally being delivered on the cheap.

When the appropriate time comes a number of people will weigh in on the subject of pay to play which has diseased our politics and may now be trying to infect our schools. Also, they will not be stealth contributors.

Gavin Riley

Dear Editor:Naming Whitney Multi-Media

Training Center…What happened to integrity and gratitude??

I am a parent of a current Whitney High School Student. I am very grateful to Grace Hu for her generous donation to WHS Foundation/Raise the Roof. I am really angry and disappointed with Mark Pulido’s personal and political vendetta towards Grace Hu. Mark Pulido and his supporters in their ef-forts to not name the media center after Grace Hu, who donated a very generous amount that I believe made the media center even possible, are disgraceful. Though the fund raising efforts were quite heroic, it seemed ap-parent that without Grace Hu generous

Hello Neighbors, Now that the

Nov. 8th election is over and the votes have been tallied I want to thank the voters of Hawaiian

Gardens for allowing Victor Farfan and myself the opportunity to serve on the city council for another 4 years. Manag-ing our campaign was no easy task, it was a humbling experience that took an enormous amount of time and energy that could have not been successful without the support and dedication of our friends and volunteers who worked so diligently to get our message to the voters.

Unfortunately we also learned that there is a negative side to the election process whereby some people choose to unfairly criticize and ridicule others in a misguided belief that the voters can be influenced by such poor behavior. That

being said, the campaign is over and Victor & I will continue to work for the benefit of all of our residents, we will continue to treat everyone with respect, we will continue to listen to your con-cerns, and we will not forget that we are here to serve you.

To the other candidates, I applaud you for having the courage to put your name and reputations on the line by running for office. In doing so you have made a commitment to serve the residents of our community, I hope you will continue that commitment by offer-ing your time and talents to be of service however possible. I look forward to working with you to make our commu-nity a better place for all.

Once again, my sincere Thank You! to the voters of Hawaiian Gardens. As always you have my promise to do my best for all of you!

donation we would not be in the place where we are today, with the center being built. If Mark Pulido’s wishes come true, it shows that the meaning of someone’s word (WHS Founda-tion and ABC Cabinet includes Dr. Smuts) means nothing and there is no gratitude to all of us who have donated. Isn’t Mark Pulido showing us that he is a stereotypical politician that has no qualms about campaign promises and breaking them once he’s in office? I

also donated to the “Raise the Roof” campaign and was promised a name plate recognition on one of the chairs for the auditorium based upon the amount I donated. Does Pulido want to challenge that also? I know that WHS Foundation is working hard to still raise money to equip the building, but if we are delayed or unsuccessful, we only have Pulido to thank for that.

Pathways Volunteer Hospice is again hosting “Light Up A Life” ceremonies for the upcoming holidays. The “Light Up A Life” tree lighting ceremonies are an opportunity to remember and honor those we love and those who have passed on. Each shining light represents a friend or loved one being honored or memorialized. A donation of $20 pro-vides one light on the hospice trees and the name of the person being honored or memorialized is reflected on the “Light Up A Life” scroll displayed by the tree.

This year, Pathways’ “Light Up a Life” holiday trees will be displayed at the Cerritos Library, Gateway Business Bank, the Iacoboni Library and the George Nye Library.

Ceremonies will feature guest emcees, holiday entertainment and an overview of the Spirit of Pathways. WHEN &Monday, December 5, 2009 Centre at Sycamore Plaza 5000 Clark Ave., Lakewood 4148 Lakewood Dr., Lakewood. For more information con-tact Vickie Kaefer 562-531-3031

EMPLOYMENT

By Jerry Bernstein

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a two part series on the automo-tive training center now under construction at Cerritos College offering professional instruction in partnership with the college, the Southland Motor Car Dealers Asso-ciation and Northwood University.

“Here at Cerritos College we are on the threshold of completing a very excit-ing project, that consists of building a well planned automotive training center that will focus on technician training, dealership management and all aspects of the automotive industry. At the same time students can earn their Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in conjunction with Northwood Univer-sity” stated Todd Leutheuser, Executive Director of the Southland Motor Car Dealers Association [SMCDA].

He said two Bachelor Degrees are offered at the Michigan based, North-wood University’s extension program on the Community College’s campus. One is a degree in Business Manage-ment, which is 95 percent of their students. The other is in Automotive Marketing Management. He said, “If a student decides to own his own dealer-ship, we have a program for this”. He said it’s estimated that five percent of dealership employees currently have a bachelor’s degree. That’s from the dealer, all the way down to the lot boy. If we estimate the average car dealer-ship has 100 employees, then only five or so of them will have a Bachelor’s Degree. However, with the Northwood University program here on the Cer-ritos Campus, he would like to see by the year 2020 and increase to 10 or 15 percent. Leutheuser believes that’s a

noble goal, but necessary because the industry is becoming more sophisticated and mature.

Asked when a student graduates from Northwood, does he go directly to a car

Dealership. Leutheuser said that depends, “We have some graduates that work for the manufacturers, but the program is designed for someone to learn how to manage the different components of the dealership.” There are four or five areas we ask the student to look at. They include parts, service, used cars, sales and sometimes the body shop. Almost five separate businesses.” He said they teach people to “look at those areas through management eyes, not just from an employee’s eyes,”

“Traditionally car dealers are cut from a different cloth,” he said, “In the past, dealerships were predominately run by families and independent guys who had a lot of moxie - think Don Kott, Cal Worthington - guys that have their pulse on the market, the culture and the whole concept. Now days, a lot of public companies and private equity firms are getting in the retail auto in-dustry. You also see a fair number of accountant types in the business. They understand the numbers and how to manage from a more formal business perspective. He said the industry is becoming more sophisticated and the educational components we offer pro-vide a sense of structure, understanding of regulations and compliance. Sophis-tication doesn’t stop at the management level; technicians need to know how to use diagnostic tools to see what exactly is going on with your car. He said you have to position yourself five to 10

years ahead of the game. “Management has to be a lot of things at once,” he as-serted.

Leutheuser explained when auto students who complete the R.O.P. high school program at the college, the Southland Motor Car Dealers will give the students scholarships redeemable if they enter one of the manufacturer programs the school has to offer. Once here the students will work mornings at the college for nine weeks where they will take Math, English, Science, and Humanities etc. In the afternoon they come over to the auto department and get their hands dirty. In the meantime we pair them up with the car dealerships for another nine weeks where they work on the electronics, alternative fuels, brakes and alignment etc. They do this for two years and graduate with an As-sociate Degree.

Asked what the prerequisites a stu-dent needed to enroll in the Northwood Automotive Management program, he answered, “That’s where I spend a lot of time, educating the students about additional educational opportunities. So far this year I’ve talked to six classes with 40 students enrolled in each one.” He said they include two management classes, a marketing class, and interna-tional management class, and an electri-cal vehicle class. The students are told if they are interested in continuing their education, they need to be sure they have their math requirements, including statistics, business law, and accounting courses completed before they transfer on to a four year institution. “Hope-fully the will consider the Northwood University program here on the Cerritos campus for their fourth year.”

“We owe Mr. Tislow a huge debt of gratitude for the sacrifice and bravery he showed during the Vietnam War. It is my hope that someday we can give Vietnam veterans, like Mr. Tislow, the proper homecoming they deserved, but never received, by establishing an an-nual ‘National Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day'.”

The Mayor thanked the Congress-woman for her continuous support and presented her with a Key to the City before recognizing the Navy’s elite Sea, Air, and Land Specialists (SEALS) Team Six who were responsible for the capturing and killing of Osama Bin Laden.

Following the placing of a Memorial Wreath by Manalo and Sanchez there was a 7-Gun Salute for Medal of Honor Recipient Lew Millett, 82nd Airborne Veteran from Cypress VFW, followed by a POW/MIA Ceremony.

The Ceremony was concluded when Miss Artesia Hunter Davis and Miss Teen Kenya Avalos sang God Bless America.

HAWAIIAN GARDENSHawaiian Gardens Mayor Mike

Gomez reminded the more than 200 residents and guests at the City’s Vet-erans Day Celebration Nov. 11 that “it is our responsibility as city officials to keep our communities safe, and its up to the men and women in uniform who serve in the military to keep our country safe, and we are here today to thank and honor them.”

Gomez introduced the public offi-cials and representatives in attendance, and informed everyone that next year

will be a special time for the City be-cause the new Veterans Memorial will be completed in time for Veterans Day.

Councilmember and Army Veteran Reynaldo Rodriguez thanked the veter-ans who had served so valiantly, “and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. We will never forget them for allowing us to enjoy the freedom we have today that came from great sacrifices.”

Guest Speaker Lt. Colonel John T. Giese, USMCR said that the United States was unique “because throughout history we have always relied on citizen soldiers who have the same character-istic that unifies us all—a love of coun-try.”

Giese also said that our veterans “continue to serve their country when they return as family members and civil-ian workers of this great nation.”

City Clerk Sue Underwood con-

cluded the program singing “Amazing Grace.”

CERRITOSIt looked like it might rain, but the

clouds gave way to sunshine. At the same time Cerritos residents, many veterans from six wars: World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan gathered by the city’s Veterans Memorial to pay homage to the country’s veterans.

Congresswoman Linda Sanchez said the nation’s veterans deserve our deep-est gratitude for protecting the freedoms we take for granted. She said, “We must keep our promise to those that are returning home by providing the health care for their physical and emotional needs.” She described them and their families as selfless.

that freedom is not free. “Many have lost their lives to protect our freedom and today we honor all those who have given their all to protect this freedom we take for granted.”

Guest Speaker Navy Veteran Corps-man, Petty Officer Victor Urena who served in Iraq, was named 2005 Navy Veteran of the Year. The two-time Pur-ple Heart and Silver Star recipient said he was 18 years old when he joined the navy. He defined patriotism as working together and that is what we do in the armed forces. He urged those present to support our veterans and the men and woman in the armed forces. “It’s a privi-lege to be a veteran,” he said. “I didn’t fight on the front lines. My job was to provide medical support”. He said he was indebted to the marines who saved his life.

Urena served five years in the navy and described the armed forces as being very diverse. He said veterans have one thing in common. “We are veterans!” He said when he was named Sailor of the Year he felt it represented all the men and women in service.

NORWALKOver 500 participated in a moving

90 minute tribute to American veterans in a ceremony that took place in front of a display of local Norwalk servicemen and women and from scenes of the at-tack on New York City on 9/11.

United States Representative Grace F. Napolitano told those gathered to take advantage of the services that are avail-able to “all Veterans and their families” to make sure that “they can live a pro-ductive, and healthy life after serving our nation at the highest level.

No wonder this retired group of staff members from the ABC Unified School District considers themselves very unique and a “family.” This “family” of 23 began as employees of the ABC Uni-fied School District and, more specifi-cally, at the Patricia Nixon Elementary School. Some when the school origi-nally opened in 1974.

Cumulative the group has dedicated 669 years of service. One staff mem-ber retired with 40 years of service. Thirteen others retired with more than 30 years, and seven with more than 20 years. Only one member has moved out of state and the rest of this “elite” Pat Nixon School Retiree Family gathers together frequently for lunch or tea at local restaurants. Sometimes they hold a

potluck at one of the member’s home. One of the newest retirees recently

commented that the group cold fully staff their own charter school as they are comprised of a school principal, sec-retary, and many teachers, including a resources specialists, special education, child care and chorus/band teachers.

Last year the school became a mag-net school and was renamed Nixon Academy of Multimedia Arts Produc-tion.

Several of the retired teachers con-tinue their love of teaching at Nixon Academy by substituting whenever called upon.

therapists on staff at the proposed Njoy Spa will be California Certified Thera-pists, including part time help.

The spa will offer foot massage and reflexology, body massage, and acupres-sure.

Asked by Mayor Carol Chen if she operates other spas sites, Jie Jiang said she owns two other spas. One is in Vir-ginia and the other in Florida.

The Council denied a request for a two-year extension of a conditional use permit for improvements on property located at 13903. 05, 07, 09, 11, 13, 15, 19, and 13921 Artesia Boulevard. It did however approve a nine month extension Applying for the extension was Bendetti Company of Irvine rep-resenting the property owner George E. Atkinson who cited financial distress as the reason for the extension.

The Council noted howver, while the owner had made improvements on the property since it first applied for a con-ditional use permit in 2006, the council felt enough time had passed for the ap-plicant to complete the improvements. The property owner was instructed to install roof screens to screen existing mechanical equipment and vents seen from ground level subject to approval of the Director of Community Develop-ment.

Mayor Chen moved no more exten-sions be made which the council unani-mously approved.

The Council also agreed to par-ticipate with the City of Lakewood on street improvements on Palo Verde

Avenue between 183rd Street and South Street. Lakewood has jurisdiction on the westerly portion.

The project includes construction of wheelchair accessible ramps, updating deficient curb and gutters, striping and maintenance of the existing in-pavement pedestrian crossing, lighting and the grinding and asphalt overlay. Estimated cost to Cerritos is $79,000.

A contract was awarded to Diversi-fied Printers in La Mirada in the amount of $104,183.85 for the printing of the Cerritos News, Library News, Com-munity Services Program and Cerritos Lifelong Enrichment Newsletter.

Despite wrapping up the regular season with a 49-21 loss to La Mirada to finish with its worst record since 2005, all was not lost for Norwalk’s football team. Although the Lancers won just three of 10 games in the regular season, head coach Jesse Ceniceros coached the program to its fifth straight trip to the playoffs.

What awaits the fourth place repre-sentatives from the Suburban League is a trip to top ranked West Covina tonight in the first round of the California Inter-scholastic Federation-Southern Section Southeast Division playoffs. The de-fending division champions won the Ha-cienda League and sport a 9-1 mark. But the Lancers have been in this position before. Last season, they knocked off Arcadia on the road in the first round.

“I told the kids that luckily we’re playing next week,” Ceniceros said. “Most schools turn in their equipment on Monday, but we have something to

So, it came as no surprise that the fierce rivals combined for three touch-downs within the first eight minutes of the game. After Andy Gramajo gave La Mirada a 7-0 lead, he picked off junior quarterback Bobby Favela on Norwalk’s second play from scrimmage. But the Matadores turned the ball over when senior safety Jerry Panuco recovered a fumble at the 40-yard line. Norwalk stuck to the ground game and finished a three-minute drive with Favela connect-ing with sophomore wingback Rashaad Penny on a 22-yard play action touch-down.

The excitement, though, lasted just 13 seconds because Keion Reyna re-turned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards and it all went downhill for Norwalk from that point on. The first play of the sec-ond quarter saw Gramajo pick off Fave-la again, leading to a 14-yard score from Johnny Hills. Norwalk ran only 13 plays in the second quarter, picking up only one first down and trailed 28-7 at the half with only 89 yards on the ground.

Norwalk was forced to punt on its first drive of the second half but Ruben Ponce De Leon returned it 75 yards to the house to put the game out of reach. Penny would answer back with a 43-yard touchdown run midway through the stanza but the Matadores made sure the hosts wouldn’t get any closer with a pair of scores in a 65 second span.

Norwalk’s last touchdown came with 1:04 remaining in the game when senior wingback Jonathan Armas scored from

shoot for. To be honest, I don’t care who we play.”

La Mirada and Norwalk had already clinched playoff spots but a lot was rid-ing when the teams squared off at Ex-celsior Stadium. A coin flip involving La Mirada, which the players and coaches did not know the outcome of until the

end of the game, Bellflower and May-fair, revealed that if the Matadores win, they would go in as the league’s top representative, followed by Mayfair and Bellflower. A Norwalk win meant the Lancers would be the third place team with La Mirada finishing in fourth and playing West Covina.

Norwalk junior cornerback Bryan Sullivan (#4) and two other defenders combine to stop La Mirada's Keion Reyna in last Friday's regular season finale.

OCTOBER 31 – NOVEMBER 6, 2011Part I felony crimes declined last week

from 33 the previous one to 22. Robberies, residential and commercial burglaries, and vehicle thefts were down, but an increase was shown in vehicle burglaries. Patrol deputies handled 258 calls for service last week, down from 266 the week before. The current 2011 weekly average in calls for service is 272.

GREAT NEWS! There were no rob-beries reported last week.

Six residential burglaries were inves-tigated last week, down from eight the previous week. Five of the cases last week involved open or unlocked doors or win-dows, and one window was pried open. Jewelry, laptop computers, cash, liquor, suitcases, and cameras were taken. The 2011 weekly average in residential bur-glaries is 4.0

The Cerritos Sheriff’s Station/Commu-nity Safety Center receives frequent inqui-ries from new and established residents as to the best methods to protect a home from burglary. Our number one recommenda-tion is to have an alarm system installed. These systems are a proven deterrent and initiate a law enforcement response within minutes.

Commercial burglaries dropped from four to one last week. A closed business was targeted where a front door was pried and a TV stolen. The 2011 weekly average in commercial/“other structure” burglaries is 2.9.

Vehicle burglaries were up from six to eleven last week. High-volume com-mercial parking lots were the crime scenes in seven cases last week. Six SUVs were involved. Three GPS, cell phones, sun-glasses, MP3 players, laptop computers, and third-row seats (from an SUV) were reported stolen. The 2011 weekly average in vehicle burglaries remained at 6.7.

Don’t give a criminal the chance to deprive you of your property. If you abso-lutely must leave items in your car, make sure that they are locked up in the trunk.

Vehicle thefts were down from nine to two last week. One theft last week was from a high-volume commercial parking lot, and the other a residential neighbor-hood. Both were SUVs. The 2011 weekly average in vehicle thefts is now 3.1.

We always promote the use of steering wheel locking devices as great visible de-terrents, but also endorse the use of track-ing devices that can lead to the speedy recovery of your stolen vehicle.

NOVEMBER 7 - 13, 2011Part I felony investigations conducted

by members of the Cerritos Sheriff’s Sta-tion increased from 22 the week before to 28 for this reporting period. Robberies, commercial burglaries, and vehicle thefts were up, vehicle burglary remained the same, and residential burglary declined. The total of calls for service last week was not available, but the 2011 weekly average

in that category is 272.There was one robbery reported last

week when a seventeen-year-old male vic-tim drove over 70 miles to the 11340 block of South Street on Monday November 7 at 6:45 p.m. to purchase a small amount of marijuana. The arrangement had been made via a website, and upon arrival, two male suspects robbed the victim at gun-point of cash, an i-Phone, and his shoes.

Residential burglaries dropped from six to three last week. Two of the crimes were due to open/unlocked doors or win-dows. Jewelry, laptop computers, knives, and an MP3 player were taken in those crimes. The third burglary was interrupted by a homeowner after the suspects at-tempted to open a screen door. The two suspects fled over the victim’s wall. The 2011 weekly average in residential bur-glaries is 4.0

Leaving a window or door unlocked or open makes entry entirely too easy for the burglar. Physical force and prying can be overcome by installation of hardware that holds the sliding glass window or door tightly to the frame. This prevents move-ment that is necessary to affect entry and can be accomplished by the use of locking pins. Remember, burglars do not like to at-tract attention and rarely smash a residen-tial window to gain entry. Make it more difficult for them to make you a victim.

Commercial burglaries were up from one to three last week. A closed business, a church, and a fitness center locker were targeted. Circuit breakers and a sound system were stolen along with ID, a cell phone and keys (from the locker). The 2011 weekly average in commercial/“other structure” burglaries is 2.9.

Vehicle burglaries remained the same at 11 last week. Five were from high-volume commercial parking lots. Five in-volved SUVs. A GPS unit and a high-end stereo were taken. Other property reported stolen included CDs, sunglasses, tools, cameras, coins, cash, purses, jewelry, and a steering wheel. Third-row seats were also removed from SUVs. The 2011 weekly average in vehicle burglaries remained at 6.8.

Six of the vehicle burglaries last week occurred in residential neighborhoods in the early morning hours. Leaving property in the passenger compartment of a vehicle is never wise, especially overnight. The risk of being caught in the early morning hours in a residential track is not as great as in a commercial parking lot where there are motorists and pedestrians present. We recommend locking items in the trunk if you absolutely must leave them in a ve-hicle, but if you own an SUV, pick-up or van, this is not an option

Vehicle thefts rose from two to six last week. Three were taken from high-volume commercial parking lots. Three SUVs, a Honda, a Toyota, and a commercial truck were stolen. The 2011 weekly average in vehicle thefts is now 3.2.
