RF vs. RadarUnderlying Principles

DroneShield uses a combination of RF

detection and radar to determine the

position of a drone. This is because each

method has different strengths and

limitations.

Customers are advised to use a

combination of sensors to give

themselves the best chance at detecting

drone threats. RF Detection: Strengths:• Long range• Able to determine make of the drone using signal analysis• Not fooled by birds or other flying objects as they do not emit RF

Limitations:• Requires a library of drones that must be kept up to date• Only detects drones within certain bands• Cannot detect drones that are not transmitting RF• Requires a minimum of two sensors to determine a drone’s

position (one sensor can determine line of bearing)

Radar Detection: Strengths:• Can detect drones that are running on unusual frequencies as it is

looking for objects and not RF• Can detect drones flying autonomously• One radar can determine a drone’s position and altitude

Limitations:• Can be confused by birds and other flying objects• Shorter range• More expensive

DroneGun MKIIIScenario Description:

While on patrol, a hostile drone is spotted, or

detected.

The DroneGun MKIII operator powers on the

unit, selects the desired bands for disruption

and points it at the hostile drone. If the Tactical

is set to disrupt RF bands only (2.4GHz, 5,8GHz,

433MHz, 915MHz), the drone will follow its

programmed lost link protocol, likely using

satellite navigation to return to its point of

origin.

If GNSS disruption is enabled, the drone can no

longer return to its point of origin so its only

option is to land.

14

RF Disruption Ratios

Drone disruption range takes many

factors into account. The power and gain

pattern of the disruptor antenna, the

power of the antenna on the controller

and the drone’s antenna.

As seen in the diagram, at a distance of

2km from the controller, the drone will

be disrupted at 1.67km at a ratio of 1:5.

As the drone approaches the active

DroneGun, the signal connection from

the drone and controller becomes

weaker (with distance) and at a certain

distance the DroneGun’s disruption

signal from the controller. This line is

shown in the diagram in red.

RfOne MKIIItem No. Description

102 Up to 8km RF DF detection, 90 degree coverage

What:

DroneShield RfOne MKII provides reliable RF detection over 90° horizontal

field of coverage and 360° with 4 RfOne MKII sensors. RfOne MKII has been

designed with increased ruggedization and detection performance, also

supporting daisy chaining for less cables per installation. RfOne MKII is

capable of passively detecting the radio frequency emissions from commercial

drones up to 8km away.

How:

RfOne MKII analyses incoming RF signals cross referencing them with a library

of known drone models and determines the direction they are coming from.

From this, the operator can determine a line of bearing to the drone.

Why:

DroneShield’s RfOne MKII has significant range and when installed at two or

more sites, can provide RF triangulation of a drone. As RfOne MKII is designed

to be a passive sensor, it suits installation at airports and sites sensitive to RF

emissions.

RfOne MKIIScenario Description:

The RfOne MKII detects the RF signature of drones

flying into its a 90° sector, determining the MAC

address and manufacturer. The RfOne MKII knows

the direction of the drone however without

triangulation, it cannot determine a point on the

map, only a line of bearing.

To determine an exact location, the operator can

set up another RfOne MKII at a different site

overlooking the same area to provide

triangulation.

The operator can also pair the RfOne MKII with the

RadarZero, which work together to confirm and

track targets within the same 90° sector.

44

Components - Detection

4.1

RF Target DifferentiationRF detection is focused in the frequency

bands known to be used for both telemetry

(C2) and one-way video or sensor

transmission between a drone and its paired

controller. Bands of interest are scanned

and analysed for matches against a

database of known RF signatures. These RF

signatures are captured from drones and

remote controllers.

Where WiFi transmission protocols are used,

identification is simpler as the required

identification detail is normally broadcast

unencrypted. This information is extracted,

filtered and referenced against a proprietary

data base.

RF TriangulationComponents - Detection

4.1

With two RfOne panels spaced a

minimum of 500m apart, they are able to

triangulate the drones position. North is

known on both sensors, as is the angle

and distance between the sensors. A line

of bearing from each sensor to the

target drone provides enough known

values to determine the drones position

through trigonometry.

103 80 degree coverage radar, up to 1km detection range

48

Components - Detection

What:Highly accurate 3D radar designed specifically for UAS (drone) detection capable of detecting drones up to 1km away.

How:RadarZero pulses reflect off of the body of the drone in the sky. RadarZero is then able to determine where the drone is located in 3D space.

Why:DroneShield’s RadarZero can be paired with RfOne and DroneOpt to better position drones in the air. Radar does not rely on the drone operating on a specific frequency making it perfect for unusual or autonomous drones.

Includes:• 1 x RadarZero• 1 x Universal Mounting System• 1 x RfOne Adaptor Bracket• 1 x Power/Data Cable (to RadarZero)• 1 x Power Cable• 1 x Ethernet Cable• 1 x Cable Box• 1 x User Manual• 1x Carry Case

RadarZeroScenario Description:

A drone flies into protected airspace and is

picked up by the RfOne due to it’s RF

emittance. The Radar then determines where

the drone is in 3D space to provide the site

with a more accurate position of the intruding

drone.

If the drone is being operated autonomously,

the RadarZero will still be able to detect the

drone and the radar pulse will reflect off the

drone’s body.

3D doppler radar detects moving objects

within the defined target area. All

moving objects will likely be

detected. Several intuitive features are

combined to assist target

classification. These features include

apparent size, altitude, and trajectory

characteristics. The diagram on the right

shows how apparent size and altitude

can be used to separate some common

types of objects from possible UAVs.
