Despite the departure of head coach Lelan Rogers, the Cortland men’s lacrosse team approaches the 2006 season with the same purpose as in previous years. Led by first-year interim head coach Rich Barnes, a former Cortland All-American, the Red Dragons shouldn’t miss a beat in continuing their stellar play in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and on a national level.

Cortland returns four All-Americans, nine of their top-10 scorers, an established goalie and a strong group of face-off experts from last season’s 17-2 squad that reached the national quarterfinals. It’s no wonder the Red Dragons are ranked fourth in the Face-Off Yearbook/Inside Lacrosse 2006 preseason Division III poll.

Senior Ben Gaebel appears to be ready to retain his starting goalkeeper’s job. Gaebel started 18 games last season and earned second team All-SUNYAC honors as he posted a 16-2 record with an 8.08 GAA, 177 saves and a 56.7 save percentage. Sophomore Mike Paolucci enters his second year with

the program and will be joined by freshmen Mike Robinson and Matt Hipenbecker in seeking time between the pipes.

Senior Dan Schmitt anchors the close defense. Schmitt earned third team All-America and first team All-ECAC Upstate New York and All-SUNYAC honors last season while collecting 56 ground balls. Seniors Casey Dougherty and Ed LeFebvre could be in prime position to step into starting roles after seeing the field in 14 and 13 games, respectively, in 2005. Junior Cheney Raymond is Cortland’s top long-stick midfielder, having earned honorable mention All-America and first team SUNYAC honors last season. Raymond scooped up 76 ground balls and even added a goal and two assists. Look for juniors Keith Lizzi and Sam Manders, sophomores Nick Bueti and Brian Dilley, and freshmen Luke Lemon and Kevin Mitchell to compete for time.

Sophomores Keith Greene and Greg Steward will be counted on to fill the top defensive midfielder positions vacated by graduation. Greene, a wide receiver for the Red Dragon football squad, saw action in all 19 games last season, while Steward, a starting defensive back on Cortland’s football team, came on strong at the end of 2005. Junior Herkimer transfer Jim Breier will also be a valuable addition as a defensive midfielder.

Controlling the face-off “X” will certainly be one of Cortland’s strengths in 2006. Junior Bill Gleason, limited to eight games last season, has won 198-of-319 faceoffs (62.1 percent) in his two seasons. Gleason can also provide a

spark on the offensive end. Senior Mike Abbott stepped in and handled the majority of the face-off duties while Gleason was out last season and registered impressive numbers. He won 158-of-255 faceoffs and led the team with 147 ground balls. Look for senior Tim Castoro, junior Ryan Simensky, sophomore Adam Hyde and sophomore Eastern Connecticut State transfer Josh Cittadino to spend some time at the face-off “X” this season.

Offensively, Cortland’s midfield has a multitude of scoring threats. Abbott was a first team All-American and the ECAC Upstate New York and SUNYAC Player of the Year in 2005. He scored 63 points on 43 goals and 20 assists in his first season with

the Red Dragons. Simensky earned first team All-SUNYAC honors after scoring 56 points on 25 goals and a team-high 31 assists and added 67 ground balls.

Senior Matt O’Connell, a second team All-SUNYAC selection in 2005, amassed 32 points on 15 goals and 17 assists. Junior Mike Felice, who can play attack or midfield, returns to the lineup after seeing action in just seven games last season due to injury. Castoro played in all 19 games and collected seven points on five goals and two assists. Sophomores Chris Hannon and Adam Hyde saw plenty of action as freshmen, scoring 18 and 23 points, respectively with Hannon netting 12 goals and Hyde connecting for 22. New additions Cittadino and freshman Justin Ianzito will compete for time at the midfield as well.

The numbers may be a little thinner at attack, but Cortland’s top go-to players are senior leaders. Kyle Lambert earned honorable mention All-America and second team All-SUNYAC honors in 2005. After compiling 50 points on 36 goals and 14 assists, Lambert is tied for 16th in career scoring and could become the sixth player in school history to surpass 200 career points. Brian Atkins had a breakout year last season, scoring 40 points on 32 goals and eight assists. He was selected as a second team ESPN the Magazine At-Large Academic All-American for his work on the field and in the classroom.

Senior Drew Solomon picked up 10 points on eight goals and two assists last season and should compete for more playing time in 2006. Other players looking to see the field are junior Tony Ventiquattro, sophomore Kyle Simensky, sophomore Sacred Heart transfer Ryan Heath and freshman John Grosse..

Season Preview

Senior attackman Drew Solomon was one of nine players to score in double figures in 2005.

Senior midfielder Tim Castoro played in all 19 games last season.

Senior defenseman Casey Dougherty saw action in 14 games in his return to the team last season.

Senior midfielder Matt O’Connell needs 22 points to reach 100 for his career.

CORTLAND POSTSEASON RESULTS

Over the decades, a significant number of Cortland graduates — almost all of them former Red Dragon players — have entered the coaching ranks at all levels to foster the sport of lacrosse.

Bill Tierney ’73 has directed Princeton University to six NCAA Division I titles, including three straight from 1996-98, and national runner-up status in 2000 and 2002. David Urick ’70, a former Cortland Distinguished Young Alumnus, led Hobart College to an unprecedented 10 straight NCAA Division III crowns from 1980-89. He is currently the head coach at Division I Georgetown University, an NCAA playoff qualifier nine consecutive years from 1997-2005. On the scholastic level, Mike Messere ’66 and Joe Cuozzo ’59 of West Genesee High School and Ward Melville High School, respectively, have built two of the most dominant programs in New York State.

About SUNY CortlandLocated atop one of the rolling hills in central New York’s “City of Seven Valleys,” the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School, which included among its earliest students inventor and industrialist Elmer A. Sperry of Sperry-Rand Corp. fame.

Over the decades, the campus expanded and in 1941, by an act of legislature and the Board of Regents, the institution officially became a four-year college providing courses leading to the bachelor’s degree. In 1948, Cortland was a founding member of the State University of New York. Today, approximately 7,500 students are pursuing degrees within the College’s three academic divisions — arts and sciences, professional studies and the school of education. Twenty-three departments with a faculty of more than 400 offer the SUNY Cortland student body 70 majors and 44 minors from which to choose. The College’s main campus covers 191 acres and includes 31 traditional and modern buildings. Fifteen of these structures are residence halls providing on-campus housing for approximately 3,000 students. Cortland also operates its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie Gorge Nature Preserve outside Cortland, and the Brauer Memorial Geological Field Station on the Helderberg Escarpment near Albany. At Cortland, athletics are viewed as having an important role in the educational mission of the College. During the fall, winter and spring seasons, Cortland participates in 25 intercollegiate sports — 14 women’s and 11 men’s — in an attempt to provide a broad program which meets the needs, interests and abilities of its students.

The Cortland athletic program placed 13th nationally out of 434 colleges and universities in the 2004-05 all-sport United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup Division III standings. The award was formerly known as the Sears Directors’ Cup from 1995-2002 and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of

Athletics (NACDA) Directors’ Cup in the 2002-03 school year. Cortland is the only New York school and one of only six nationwide to finish in the top 20 each of the last 10 years. Since 1989, the Red Dragons have captured 12 NCAA Division III team titles.

The College offers its student-athletes excellent athletic facilities. The newly-constructed on-campus stadium features two artificial turf fields. One field seats 6,500 spectators, the other 1,500. The Cortland football, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field teams are among those who utilize the facility, which the New York Times called “...a new stadium worthy of a major university power.”

The Bessie L. Park Physical Education and Recreation Center, opened in 1973, features the Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium with a 3,500 seating capacity; the Olympic-sized Harriet Holsten swimming pool with gallery seating for 1,500; the Alumni Ice Arena, a facility which can accommodate 2,500 spectators; a 500-seat gymnastics arena, racquetball and squash courts, a wrestling room, modern athletic training facilities and the state-of-the-art Francis Woods Fitness Facility.

Nearby Clayton R. Lusk Field House, with its tartan-textured surface, is home for the indoor track teams, varsity practice sessions and recreational activities. Cortland’s soccer teams play on T. Fred “Prof” Holloway Field, which has lights for night contests and newly installed bleachers. The College also has 22 outdoor tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts and boasts Robert H. Wallace Field (baseball) and Dragon Field (softball) as part of its 51 acres of athletic fields.
