Accounting for All Possibilities

Considering all the options can be an effective way to solve a problem. Although there may be instances where this strategy is not the most sophisticated procedure, it may be the simplest to use, since it is typically not very abstract. However, the issue of accounting for all the possibilities is crucial in the use of this strategy. If we do not have an organized procedure to account for all the possibilities, the strategy often goes awry.

Accounting for All Possibilities, atau Mencatat semua Kemungkinan, merupakan salah satu dari sekian banyak strategi untuk memecahkan masalah/problem. Dalam strategi ini, pertimbangan terhadap semua pilihan, menjadi cara efektif untuk menyelesaikan masalah. Cara ini merupakan cara yang cukup sederhana dan tidak terlalu abstrak. Hal paling utama yang patut diperhatikan adalah cara dan aturan untuk mencatat semua kemungkinan yang ada. Ketika kita salah atau keliru dalam mengorganisir proses untuk mencatat kemungkinan yang ada, maka seluruh strategi menjadi buyar.

Penggunaan Strategi “Mencatat Semua Kemungkinan” dalam Penyelesaian Masalah Sehari-hari

Dalam buku sumber “Problem Solving Strategies for Efficient and Elegant Solutions (A Resource for the Mathematics Teacher)”, disebutkan beberapa contoh salah satunya adalah :We often use this problem-solving strategy in everyday life without conscious awareness that the strategy is even being employed. Suppose that you are asked to attend a meeting in a hotel about 150 miles away. The way most people would decide on the best way to travel to the meeting is to list all the possible modes of travel (e.g., train, plane, car, bus, helicopter, etc.) either in writing or mentally, and then select the most efficient method by elimination or direct selection (due to time, cost, etc.).

• For example, whenever a catastrophe such as a train or airplane crash occurs, the authorities must account for all possibilities to determine the cause of the accident. Then by making a careful investigation of the accident and all of its potential causes, followed by a proper elimination of events that could not have occurred, the authorities can be clear about the actual cause by its being the sole remainder in this process of elimination.

• Ketika kita diminta untuk berbelanja oleh ibu kita, dengan pesanan tomat dan cabe, tetapi tidak disebutkan jumlahnya, hanya disebutkan untuk membelanjakan uang sejumlah 15 ribu rupiah, maka kita mulai memikirkan dan memperhitungkan perbandingan jumlah belanja yang mungkin, untuk dua jenis pesanan tersebut.

• Waktu Natal tiba, dan sekeluarga hendak bersilaturahmi, kita juga mencatat(dalam pikiran pada umumnya) kemungkinan rumah yang bisa disinggahi.
