We take pleasure in answering thus prominentlythe communication below, expressing at the sametime our great gratification that its faithful author isnumbered among the friends of The Sun:

Dear Editor—

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say thereis no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in TheSun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a SantaClaus?

VirginiaO’Hanlon

Virginia, yourlittle friends arewrong. They havebeen affected by theskepticism of askeptical age. Theydo not believeexcept they see. They think thatnothing can bewhich is not com-prehensible by theirlittle minds. Allminds, Virginia, whether they bemen’s or children’s,are little. In thisgreat universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant,in his intellect as compared with the boundless worldabout him, as measured by the intelligence capable ofgrasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists ascertainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your lifeits highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would bethe world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be asdreary as if there were no Virginias. There would beno childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to maketolerable this existence. We should have no enjoy-ment, except in sense and sight. The eternal lightwith which childhood fills the world would be extin-guished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well notbelieve in fairies. You might get your papa to hiremen to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve tocatch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see SantaClaus coming down, what would that prove? Nobodysees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is noSanta Claus. The most real things in the world arethose that neither children nor men can see. Did youever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not,but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobodycan conceive or imagine all the wonders there areunseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see whatmakes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering theunseen world which not the strongest man, nor eventhe united strength of all the strongest men that everlived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view andpicture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it allreal? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothingelse real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and livesforever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10times 10,000 years from now, he will continue tomake glad the heart of childhood.

Francis P. Church’s editorial, “Yes Virginia, Thereis a Santa Claus” was an immediate sensation, andwent on to became one of the most famous editorialsever written. It first appeared in the The New YorkSun in 1897, almost a hundred years ago, and wasreprinted annually until 1949 when the paper wentout of business.

Virginia O’Hanlon went on to graduate fromHunter College with a Bachelor of Arts degree at age21. The following year she received her Master’s fromColumbia, and in 1912 she began teaching in the NewYork City school system, later becoming a principal. After 47 years, she retired as an educator. Through-out her life she received a steady stream of mail abouther Santa Claus letter, and to each reply she attachedan attractive printed copy of the Church editorial.Virginia O’Hanlon Douglas died on May 13, 1971, atthe age of 81, in a nursing home in Valatie, N.Y.

AUSTIN — Gov. GregAbbott on Dec. 1 issued thefollowing statement on theNov. 30 death of GeorgeHerbert Walker Bush, the41st president of the Unit-ed States:

"The state of Texasmourns with the nation atthe passing of one of ourgreatest presidents.George H.W. Bush was anAmerican hero and icon, hewas a friend to all he met,he embodied class and dig-nity. Texans are genuinelyhonored that he called theLone Star State home andwe collectively grieve thismonumental loss. On be-half of Texas, Cecilia and Ioffer our thoughts andprayers to the Bush fami-ly in their time of need."

Bush, 94, a Republican, served as the presidentfrom 1989 to 1993. Heserved as vice presidentfrom 1981 to 1989 along-side President Ronald Re-agan. He served as amember of the U.S. Houseof Representatives, TexasCongressional District 7,from 1967 to 1971, andwent on to serve the nationin many other high-levelappointed positions.

Fund transfer iscompleted

Texas ComptrollerGlenn Hegar on Nov. 29announced the transfer of$2.77 billion into the StateHighway Fund and theEconomic Stabilization(“Rainy Day”) Fund. Eachfund received more than$1.38 billion or 50 percentof the total transfer, Hegarsaid.

The transfer amountsare based on crude oil andnatural gas production taxrevenues in excess of 1987collections. If either taxgenerates more revenuethan the 1987 threshold,an amount equal to 75 per-cent of the excess is trans-ferred.

In November 2014, vot-ers approved a constitu-tional amendmentallocating at least half ofthese severance taxes tothe Rainy Day Fund, withthe remainder going to theSHF for use on non-tollhighway construction, maintenance and right-of-way acquisition.

When fiscal 2018 endedon Aug. 31, the Rainy Day

Former U.S. President GeorgeH.W. Bush dies Nov. 30

Fund balance was $11.04billion. The new balance of$12.48 billion, not account-ing for currently outstand-ing spending authority, will decline as agenciesspend down the remainingappropriation authority,Hegar said.

Also, the high balancehelps Texas maintain itsAAA credit rating. “That’swhy I have asked the Leg-islature to authorize me toinvest a portion of the fundin a more prudent and re-sponsible manner and usethe returns to address thetypes of long-term liabili-ties that have crippled thefinances of states such asIllinois and New Jersey.Significant portions of thismoney have not been keep-ing up with inflation, andwe must not allow the pow-er of this asset to erodeover time,” Hegar added.

Returns reachlandmark

Comptroller Hegar onNov. 29 announced his of-fice had returned $1 billionin unclaimed property torightful owners since hetook office in January2015.

“This landmarkachievement representsthe commitment this officehas made to reuniting un-claimed property with itsrightful owners,” Hegarsaid. “I’m proud of the folksin our Unclaimed Proper-ty program, and I encour-age everyone to go to ourwebsite and see if there ismoney waiting for them.”

About 830,000 claimshave been approved whileHegar has been comptrol-ler, he said, and since 2015,the comptroller’s office hasredesigned its unclaimedproperty website and inter-nal systems to make theclaims process faster, easi-er and more efficient.

ClaimitTexas.org allowsusers to upload claim doc-umentation and is mobile-optimized to make it easierto search for unclaimedproperty on smartphonesand tablets. The state hasreturned more than $3 bil-

lion in unclaimed proper-ty to its rightful ownerssince the program’s incep-tion in 1962, Hegar add-ed.

Tax scammerstarget many

Texas Attorney Gener-al Ken Paxton on Nov. 26warned Texans that enti-ties impersonating the In-ternal Revenue Serviceare sending fraudulentemail messages.

Fraudsters may use thesubject line “tax tran-scripts” in email messag-es that attempt to baitTexans into opening linksand documents that con-tain malware designed tosteal sensitive financialdata.

Paxton said the IRSnever calls or emails citi-zens to demand repay-ment for penalties, and ifany citizen receives afraudulent call or emailmessage they should callthe IRS directly at 800-829-1040.

“My office stands readyto assist hard-workingTexas consumers. The con-sumer protection sectionof our website containsseveral resources on howto recognize, prevent andreport scams like this. Be-ing informed is the bestway to prevent fraud andloss,” added Paxton.

Many may purchaseunits

Texas Land Commis-sioner George P. Bush onNov. 28 announced theFederal Emergency Man-agement Agency granted aprogram under whichHurricane Harvey survi-vors still residing in tem-porary housing units maypurchase the federallyfunded manufacturedhousing units and traveltrailers.

FEMA's temporaryhousing assistance is setto expire on Feb. 25, 2019,18 months after the dateof the disaster. Currently, there are 1,582 house-holds in temporary hous-ing units — manufacturedhousing and travel trail-ers — administered by theTexas General Land Of-fice.

DPS remindsTexans toprepare forwinter weather

AUSTIN – The TexasDepartment of Public Safety(DPS) encourages Texans inall regions of the state tomake preparations forstaying safe as we approachthe official start of winter.

“As we know all too well,Texas weather can change inan instant,” said DPSDirector Steven McCraw.“Every year, Texas facesserious dangers brought on bywinter weather conditions, including freezing tempera-tures, ice, sleet and evensnow. Taking extra safetyprecautions now could makeall the difference during thesepotentially severe weatherevents this winter.”

Texans can prepare theirvehicles for the winter bychecking the battery, windshield wipers (includingappropriate freeze resistant-fluid), tire pressure, tire treadand fluid levels, as well astaking time to lubricate doorand trunk locks to preventfreezing. In addition, thefollowing is a list of emergen-cy supplies drivers can keepin their vehicle:

gloves and a hat;•Cell phone, radio,

flashlight and extra batteries;•First-aid kit and pocket

knife;•High calorie, non-

MIKE KEENEY

The 2018 NFL season entersWeek 15 with a slew of key gameshighlighted by the Thursday nightmatchup of the Los AngelesChargers against the Kansas CityChiefs in an important AFC Westgame for both teams.

A KC win should pretty muchwrap up the division title for AndyReid’s team, which lost a hugepiece of its offense two weeks agowhen running back Kareem Hunt(824 yards rushing, 14 total TDs)was released due to an incidentwith a female in which Hunt isseen on video pushing and kickingthe female individual at a hotel inCleveland in February of 2018. Intheir first game without Hunt, theoffense continued to put up bignumbers as they defeatedOakland 40-33 two weeks ago.

Things will get much tougherthis week against a Chargersteam that has a load of offensiveweapons itself led by quarterbackPhilip Rivers. Two weeks ago, theChargers overcame a 23-7halftime deficit at Pittsburgh torally for a 33-30 win on a last-second field goal.

This should be a good one onThursday night.

The Texans will leave theconfines of NRG Stadium for thefirst time in three weeks and travelto New York to take on the Jets onSaturday afternoon. Houstoncould very well be the AFC SouthDivision champs if they defeatedIndianapolis last Sunday at home. That would give Bill O’Brien’steam a four-game lead with threeremaining. Two weeks ago, theTexans rolled over Cleveland 29-13 as the defense came up withfour turnovers and a defensivescore while the offense was itsusual productive self.

In other key games thisweekend, New England visitPittsburgh, Philadelphia visit theRams on Sunday Night Footballand New Orleans visits Carolinaon Monday Night Football. Phillyquarterback Carson Wentzreturns to the LA Coliseum wherealmost a year ago he sustained aseason-ending ACL injury and weall know what happened after that.Backup QB Nick Foles led theEagles to a Super Bowl victoryover New England.

Speaking of the Patriots, theyvisit Pittsburgh for the secondstraight year looking to hold off theTexans for the second seed in theAFC playoffs. The Steelers needto shore up things on defense ifthey hope to fend off Tom Bradyand Co. on Sunday. In their loss tothe Chargers two weeks ago, theSteelers defense gave up 26second-half points as Riversshred the Pittsburgh secondarywith big play after big play.

In the college game, the bowlseason is set with Alabama,Clemson, Notre Dame andOklahoma earning berths in theCollege Football Playoffs (CFP). Ithink the committee got it right, although there could be anargument for a two-loss Georgiateam to earn the fourth spot thatOU got thanks to its Big 12 titlegame win over Texas. Georgiagave No. 1-ranked Alabama all itwanted an even had a 14-pointlead over the Crimson Tide beforeNick Saban’s team rallied behindbackup quarterback Jalen Hurts.Hurts replaced an injured TuaTagoialoa who injured his ankle inthe second half. Hurts threw atouchdown pass and scored thegame-winning touchdown on a 19-yard scamper late in the fourthquarter. A lot of folks were happyfor Hurts, who did not complainwhen Saban gave the starting jobto Tua and ‘Bama fans had to bethankful Hurts was there when hewas needed the most in the SECtitle game.

The national semifinals will pitNo. 2 Clemson against No. 3Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowland No. 1 Alabama against No. 4OU in the Orange Bowl. Bothgames will be played on Dec. 29.

Texas earned a trip to theSugar Bowl to face Georgia, whileTexas A&M will look for its ninthwin of the season when it facesNorth Carolina State in the GatorBowl. Locally, the University ofHouston will face Army in theArmed Services Bowl in FortWorth.

Texans hit road for first time in three weeks:Chargers look to close gap on Chiefs in AFC West

We will take a look at thosegames in the coming weeks, butthis week we will focus on Week15 of the NFL schedule.

Before we take a look at thisweek’s game, let’s review lastweek’s record. A 7-2 mark uppedthe season record to 99-62 (61%).

Now, onto this week’s game.

NFL

Los Angeles Chargers atKansas City – An excellent gameto start Week 15 pits two of theleague’s best offenses as PhilipRivers (3,418 yards, 28 TDs) andthe Chargers take on PatrickMahomes (3,923 yards, 41 TDs)and the Chiefs. LA might getrunning back Melvin Gordon (802yards, 13 total TDs) back for thisgame. Gordon missed theChargers last three games with aknee injury, but the Chargers havesaid he should return at somepoint this season. This would bethe perfect time for his return.Gordon’s presence could make abig difference in this game. He’s aquality runner and also isproductive in the passing game. That would give Rivers one moreweapon to use against a suspectKC defense. The Chiefs offensecontinued to roll even with the lossof Hunt. Mahomes will face a soliddefense this week, but he has somany weapons to turn to that LAwill have its hands full. Two weeksago in their win over Oakland, KCtight end Travis Kelce (79receptions, 1,082 yards, 9 TDs)had a huge game with 12receptions for 168 yards and twotouchdowns. He and wide receiverTyreek Hill (66 receptions, 1,119yards, 11 TDs) might be too muchfor the LA defense to handleThursday night. My pick, KansasCity 36, Los Angeles Chargers 33

Houston at New York Jets –The Texans hit the road for thefirst time in three week to face aJets team that is playing out thestring. Look for Bill O’Brien’s teamto take the fight out of the Jetsearly. Look for quarterbackDeshaun Watson (3,031 yards, 21TDs) and wide receiver DeAndreHopkins (80 receptions, 1,119yards, 8 TDs) to hook up on somebig plays down field to open upthings for Lamar Miller and the

running game. Defensively, J.J.Watt, Jadaveon Clowney and theirmates will look to apply a lot ofpressure on Sam Darnold andJosh McCown and force aturnover or two. Even if theTexans have the AFC Southwrapped up, don’t expect a let upfrom them. They are in position toearn the second seed and a first-round bye in the AFC playoffs, sothere is still much to play for. Mypick, Houston 30, New York Jets15

Tampa Bay at Baltimore –Thanks to back-to-back losses bythe Steelers, and three straightwins by the Ravens, Baltimore isback in the hunt for the AFC Northtitle. John Harbaugh’s team hostsa Tampa Bay team that has beenplaying better, but they will facean uphill climb this Sunday inBaltimore. It appears this is nowLamar Jackson’s team, eventhough veteran quarterback JoeFlacco has been cleared to playafter sustaining a hip injury earlierthis season. Jackson (540 passingyards, 2 TDs; 404 rushing yards, 3TDs) gives the Ravens a mobilequarterback who can make playswith his legs. Look for him to havea big day against a suspect TBdefense. Now that they have beengiven new life, I don’t think theRavens will look past the Bucs. There is too much at stake, plusthe Ravens have one of the bestdefenses in the league and shouldfeast against turnover-proneJameis Winston (1,941 yards, 12TDs) come Sunday. My pick,Baltimore 26, Tampa Bay 13

Green Bay at Chicago – ThePackers visit Chicago with hopesof playing spoilers in the AFCNorth now that their playoffchances are pretty much dashed. Two weeks ago, Green Baydropped a 20-17 decision at hometo the lowly Arizona Cardinals and

that loss cost head coach MikeMcCarthy his job. He was firedafter his post-game pressconference and offensivecoordinator Joe Philbin wasnamed interim head coach. It willbe interesting to see how thePackers, especially quarterbackAaron Rogers (3,504 yards, 21TDs) react to McCarthy’s firing.Rogers and McCarthy had a frostyrelationship the last couple ofyears and many thoughtMcCarthy’s days were numbered. It will be interesting to see whatdirection the Green Bay frontoffice takes in its search for a newhead coach. Now, the Packersneed to play like professionalsand close out the season on ahigh note. Beating the Bears inChicago would be a good start. That’s going to be easier said thandone. Two weeks ago, the Bearslost a wild 30-27 overtime game tothe Giants, but Minnesota alsolost so the Bears remained on topin the division. Look for theChicago defense to be thedifference maker in this one asthey harass Rogers all afternoonin the Windy City. My pick,Chicago 23, Green Bay 20

Seattle at San Francisco –These two teams meet for thesecond time in three weeks and49er fans hope their team is morecompetitive than it was in the 43-16 beat down Seattle adminis-tered two weeks ago. In thatgame, quarterback Russell Wilson(2,716 yards, 29 TDs) threw fourtouchdown passes and he shouldhave another big day against adepleted SF defense. Look forWilson to hook up with speedywide receiver Tyler Lockett (44receptions, 713 yards, 9 TDs) andthen turn things over to ChrisCarson (704 yards, 4 TDs) andthe running game to close things

out. My pick, Seattle 33, SanFrancisco 12

Dallas at Indianapolis – Thiscould be a tough road game forthe Cowboys when they faceAndrew Luck (3,360 yards, 32TDs) and the much-improvedColts. But if the Dallas defenseplays like it did two weeks agoduring its 13-10 win over theSaints, the Cowboys should befine. The Dallas defense wasflying all over the field andpressured Saints QB Drew Breesall night long. Quarterback DakPrescott (2,675 yards, 14 TDs)and running back Ezekiel Elliott(1,150 yards, 9 total TDs) hookedup on a scoring pass in the firsthalf and the offense added twofield goals and let the defensetake over. The Dallas offense willhave to produce more than 13points against an Indy team thatcan light up the scoreboard. Lookfor another quality effort from theDallas “D” as the offense does abit more to pick up a key road win.My pick, Dallas 26, Indianapolis19

New England at Pittsburgh –The Game of the Week is set forHeinz Field in Pittsburgh as thesurging Patriots visit the Steelerswho need to prove to themselvesthat they can beat NE. A year ago,the Steelers squandered an 8-point lead in the third quarter toallow Tom Brady (3,342 yards, 20TDs) to rally the Pats for a 27-24victory. Quarterback BenRothlisberger (3,945 yards, 26TDs) has plenty of weapons toattack the NE defense with led byspeedy wide receivers JuJuSmith-Schuster (83 receptions,1,104 yards, 4 TDs) and AntonioBrown (81 receptions, 1,028yards, 12 TDs). Running backJames Conner (909 yards, 12total TDs) sustained a leg injury inthe loss to the Chargers twoweeks ago, but it was notconsidered serious. He should beback for this game and hispresence could be a big key forthe Steelers. Two weeks ago intheir 24-10 win over Minnesota, the NE defense played one of itsbest games of the year and youhad better believe head coach BillBelichick will have something uphis sleeve for Big Ben comeSunday afternoon. Something

tells me the Steelers right the shipthis week and get that big winthey’ve been needing this year.My pick, Pittsburgh 30, NewEngland 27

Philadelphia at Los AngelesRams – A good one for theSunday Night football crew hasthe Eagles visiting the Rams forthe second straight year. Asstated earlier, Philly lost startingQB Carson Wentz to a season-ending knee injury when thesetwo met last December but Wentz(2,846 yards, 18 TDs) lookscompletely healthy and has ledthe Eagles back into the playoffhunt after they lost four of theirfirst six games. Wentz and tightend Zach Ertz should make playsagainst a suspect LA secondary, but it’s the Eagles defense thatwill have its hands full against thehigh-scoring Rams, led byquarterback Jared Goff (3,754yards, 27 TDs) and running backTodd Gurley (1,175 yards, 19 totalTDs). Look for wide receiversBrandin Cooks (63 receptions,1,026 yards, 3 TDs) and RobertWoods (64 receptions, 971 yards,5 TDs) should feast on a poorPhilly secondary as the Ramsmake up for last year’s loss to theEagles and help the Cowboys inthe NFC East race. My pick, LosAngeles Rams 34, Philadelphia 23

New Orleans at Carolina –Week 15 concludes on Mondaynight with the Saints visiting thePanthers in what could be a must-win for Panthers head coach RonRivera. Two weeks ago, Carolinalost its fourth straight game, falling24-17 at Tampa Bay. Rivera’sseat is getting very hot and hecould be coaching for his job inthe last four weeks of the season. The Saints need to prove they canwin on the road and will be lookingfor a better output by the offenseafter it was shut down by theDallas defense two weeks agoduring its 13-10 loss. Look forDrew Brees (3,262 yards, 30TDs), Alvin Kamara (742 rushingyards; 65 receptions, 555 yards,15 total TDs) and wide receiverMichael Thomas (91 receptions,1,120 yards, 8 TDs) to get thingsback on track as the Saints look towrap up the AFC South onMonday Night Football. My pick,New Orleans 33, Carolina 23.
