    The tradition o the BYU

    quarterback actory should

    add another notable chapter

in 2011 ater true reshman Jake

Heaps broke all the schoolsreshmen records in

    2010. While the biggest

    question mark entering

    last season was who

    would take over at

Playing football at BYU is a unique experience unlike any

other in college athletics. With a heritage that runs deep

in on-and-off the field success, members of the team are

expected to do all things at a higher level, in every aspect

of life. The program is guided by three distinct principles-

    tradition, spirit and honor.

    TRADITION

BYUs football history is packed full of championships, bowl

games and national honors. This tradition is something

that every player that passes through the program will

become a part of and appreciate. Since 1974 BYU has

played in 29 bowl games, won a National Championship,

claimed 23 conference titles and earned 17 national top-25

finishes, including four top-10 finishes. Under head coach

Bronco Mendenhall, BYU has posted a record of 56-21, won

at least 10 games four of the last five years and gone to six

straight bowl games. Since the 1970s, BYU has established

itself as one of the top football programs in the West.

    1984 National Champions

    23 Conference Championships

    29 Bowl Games

Top 5 nationally in passing offense 19 times

    17 National Top-25 NCAA Finishes

50-15 Record in the last five years

Ranked in the Top 25 during each of the last five

    seasons

    SPIRIT

As a school operated by the Church of Jesus Christ ofLatter-day Saints, BYU provides an opportunity for student-

athletes to grow mentally, physically and spiritually.

BYU seeks to develop students of faith, intellect, and

character who have the skills and the desire to continue

learning and to serve others throughout their lives. More

than 60 percent of BYUs team has served a two-year

church mission. All of BYUs players take part in service

opportunities throughout the community. This principle is a

large factor in BYUs recruiting approach. Coaches evaluate

not only the playing ability and academic achievement of

possible recruits but also their moral character. BYU makes

it a priority to develop a players faith, and make men ofstrength, courage, fortitude, and service.

261 total missionaries that have served or are

currently serving have been coached or recruited by

    Bronco Mendenhall

42 players currently serving full-time missions

69 players slated to participate in 2011 have served

full-time missions in 28 different countries, plus

    Puerto Rico

Players and coaches participate in firesides or

hour-long devotionals the night prior to select

games intended to help those attend strengthen

or gain a knowledge of our purpose here on earth

    185 Academic All-MWC selections and 64 Scholar-

Athlete honorees during Mendenhalls tenure (most

    in MWC)

All BYU students must complete at least 14 credit-

    hours in religion-related coursework

Players participate weekly in the Thursdays Heroes

program, inviting families and individuals with specialneeds to practice to be honored and recognized for

    their faith, courage and strength

    HONOR

All BYU students, including student athletes, are required

to follow the University Honor Code, which is a code

of conduct and living that helps improve the lives of

university students. Coach Mendenhall has worked

hard to instill the principles outlined in the honor code.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day

Saints and non-members are expected to maintain the

same standards of conduct. All who represent BYU are

to maintain the highest standards of honor, integrity,

morality, and consideration of others in personal behavio

The basics of BYUs honor code are as follows:

    Be honest

Live a chaste and virtuous life

Obey the law and all campus policies

    Use clean language

    Respect others

Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea,

    coffee, and substance abuse

    Participate regularly in church services

Observe the dress and grooming standards

Encourage others in their commitment to comply wit

    the Honor Code

As a BYU football player, much is expected on the field, in the classroom and in daily life.

It is important for athletes to find a balance between all of their various commitments.

Coach Mendenhall wants his players to structure their lives with emphasis in the

following five areas and in this order: Faith, Family, Knowledge, Friends and Football.

    1. FaithWith BYU being a religion-based institution, players and coaches alike can unite under

similar religious beliefs and backgrounds. Athletes can find strength and comfort in

relying on their faith in difficult situations. Their faith allows them to see the larger picture

    beyond the football field.

    2. FamilyBYU places a strong emphasis on the importance of family and the strength that comesfrom building relationships with them. BYU football has always been unique with its family

relationships, including married players, sibling teammates and continuing generations

of athletes. The team itself has created an atmosphere of family with a brotherhood of

teammates, a band of brothers, who care for one another as family.

    3. KnowledgeAs student-athletes, gaining all of the knowledge available will always be an important

principle for success. BYU football encourages athletes to reach high academicachievement in the classroom. After graduation and throughout their lifetime, athletes

should continue to learn and grow in knowledge.

    4. FriendsChoosing the people you associate with can shape the person that you become. The

importance of good friends and associating with people of high character and moral

standards will always be a constant principle for BYU football. The team encourages

players to be good friends and make lasting friendships while encouraging all to be good

    examples.

    5. FootballMany people will wonder why football is placed fifth on this list. After understanding

what a BYU football player is supposed to be and what he is supposed to represent, it

becomes clear. Year in and year out, BYU football will seek to not only win at the highest

level but also forever strive to produce successful young men of exceptional moral

    character.
