ADRIAN COLLEGEAdrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.

Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian.

On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degree-granting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church.

For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus.

Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

In its 2011 edition of America’s “Best Colleges,” U.S. News & World Report ranks Adrian College as one of the top five schools in the Midwest of Regional Colleges to have the least student debt load upon graduation.

This is the third consecutive year that Adrian College has been featured and singled out by U.S. News and World Report. In its 2009 edition of America’s “Best Colleges” and again in 2010, Adrian College received top billing as a school to watch and as the #1 Up-and-Coming School in the Midwest.

Dr. Jeffrey R. Docking, 17th president of Adrian College, earned a doctorate in social ethics from Boston University, a Master of Divinity degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. He became president July 2005.

Before coming to Adrian, he held positions at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Penn., most recently as vice president and special assistant to the president, and as vice president of student affairs and dean of student affairs. He also has experience teaching and working in residence life. He and his wife, Beth, have four children.

The Adrian College Bulldogs have the “crown jewel” of Division III football stadiums. The Multi-Sport Performance Stadium is entering its fifth year of existence on the campus of Adrian College and is a premier facility. The $6.5 million dollar masterpiece was completed in time for the beginning of the 2006 season.

The football team has enjoyed a .640 winning percentage since the stadium opened and will look to continue their success into the 2011campaign.

Not only does the football team enjoy this facility, but Adrian College’s soccer and lacrosse teams also play their home games at Performance Stadium.

The stadium seats approximately 3,000 fans with 2,500 chairback seats on the home side and an additional 500 bleacher seats on the visitor side. Features include state-of-the-art FieldTurf, stadium lighting, a fully-wired press box, and an end-zone section for student seating. In addition, there is the James F. Thomas Pavilion which

is used for a variety of events including alumni gatherings on football game-days.

In the 1950s, the campus had a football stadium. It was located next to Caine Student Center (then called Ridge Gymnasium). It was later razed to make way for new academic buildings. The College entered a cooperative arrangement in the 1960s to use the new high school stadium, which the College helped build. The Bulldogs played their home games at Maple Stadium for over four decades before the 2006 season. “The Map” was the site for several classic battles on the gridiron over the years.

The funds for the project were raised through the Adrian College Development Office. Architectural services were provided by Hastings & Chivetta, an industry leader in higher education facilities. The firm designed the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center on campus. Construction management was provided by the Douglas Company.

The first game at Multi-Sport Performance Stadium was Saturday, September 9, 2006 as the Bulldogs faced Defiance College. The Bulldogs have a record of 16-9 during the first five

seasons playing on the FieldTurf at the stadium.

The first year in charge of a program can usually be a difficult process. During head coach Jim Deere’s first season at the helm of the Adrian College football team, this process manifested with a 5-5 record overall and a 4-2 mark in the MIAA. The team fought through a non-conference schedule like none other and still managed to finish in a tie for second place in the conference once that portion of the schedule began.

Deere thinks that with one year under his watch, things will be expected at another level in 2011. “The coaching staff has the players believing that they can win and not just hoping,” said Deere. “The whole program has bought into what we are doing and the philosophies we want to implement. We are looking for leaders to step up this year. I believe that we need to guide these players, but they must hold each other accountable for their actions on and off the field.”

Offense

The Bulldogs will certainly miss the services of Mike McGee at quarterback. McGee set several school passing records during his four years and helped the offense provide a balance between the run and pass. Junior Justin Hemm (Piqua, Ohio) did most of his work under center during the spring and has spent time at quarterback during his first two seasons at Adrian College. Hemm is a very talented athlete who was named First Team All-MIAA as a wide receiver last fall. Hemm caught 50 passes for 734 yards and nine touchdowns as a sophomore. Over the past two seasons, Hemm has also rushed for 531 yards and four scores. Through the air, Hemm has completed 42-of-71 for 494 yards and five touchdowns. He is averaging 77.7 all-purpose yards per game during his career.

The backfield will be without the services of Jared Edwards who rushed for 1,011 yards and five touchdowns in 2010. Looking to replace that productivity will be senior Jeremy Southworth (Hillsdale, Mich./Reading) who rushed for 206 yards and a pair of touchdowns a year ago. Sophomore Damon Brown (Troy, Mich.) will also get carries for the Bulldogs, who need to establish a ground game in order to reach their goals for 2011. Brown rushed for 53 yards and two scores in a reserve role as a freshman. Also look for newcomer Dae’Von Robinson (Detroit, Mich./Southfield) to make an impact after getting several looks from Division I and II schools.

The aerial attack welcomes back Hemm and junior Mitch Gabriele (Hillsdale, Mich.) who led the team with 63 catches for 848 yards and six touchdowns. Gabriele set the single-season school record in receptions. Junior D’ante Thompson (Detroit, Mich./Henry Ford) caught 18 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns in eight games a year ago. The top four wideouts all return for the Bulldogs, which gives them one of the most talented and experienced units in the MIAA. Senior Isiah Cross (Atlanta, Ga./Flowery Branch) will further bolster the receiving unit after transferring from Northwood University.

The offensive line will have bookend tackles that have a proven track record as solid competitors. Seniors Spencer Whittington (Paw Paw, Mich./Lawrence) and Nick Ross (Manchester, Mich.) have been full-time starters over the past two seasons. They each will provide solid pass protection and are very competitive in the trenches. Whittington was named First Team All-MIAA a year ago while Ross was a Second Team All-MIAA selection. Senior Jared Babcock (Alma, Mich.) played on the defensive line a year ago out of necessity, but will transition back to offensive guard in 2011. Junior Nick Mighion (Sterling Heights, Mich./Warren Cousino) played in

all 10 games and made eight starts at guard as a sophomore.

Defense

The Bulldogs will need to win the battle up front on the defensive line and will do so without the presence of four-year starter Austin Fritz. He was a First Team All-MIAA performer a year ago and led the team with 10 tackles for loss and six sacks. The injury bug really hit this group last season, but the losses provided underclassmen an opportunity for immediate playing time. Returning after injury will be senior Steve Mauk (China, Mich./St. Clair) who was lost in the season opener at UW-Whitewater. Mauk has built up his strength in the offseason and will make a big impact at one end spot. Junior Paul Herman (Marshall, Mich.) missed the second half of the season due to injury and collected three tackles before going on the shelf. Junior Chris Janes (Howell, Mich.) played in seven games last year and missed the first three contests. He made nine tackles during his time on the defensive line. On the interior, sophomore Aaron Gray (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) played in all 10 games and made five starts as a freshman. Gray finished with 28 tackles and two tackles for loss.

The linebacking core lost Danny Taylor and Jarred Kwiatkowski to graduation and with it a total of 147 tackles from a season ago. They were the top two tacklers on the team with Taylor being named First Team All-MIAA and Kwiatkowski earning Second Team All-MIAA plaudits. The outside linebackers are both back in senior Darren Walter (Muskegon, Mich./Orchard View) and senior Bryan Garbarino (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica). Walter started all 10 games for the Bulldogs in 2010 and ranked fourth on the team with 57 tackles. Garbarino played in 10 contests and made five starts. He had 35 tackles and two interceptions to his credit in 2010. The inside spots will be hotly contested as junior Kwame Cawarrie (Detroit, Mich./Dearborn Annapolis) moves over from defensive end. Cawarrie recorded 22 tackles in seven games last year. Sophomore A.J. Gill (Lake Orion, Mich.) and sophomore Hunter Juntunen (Webberville, Mich.) will push for the starting jobs once the season begins on Sept. 2.

The secondary is completely back with senior Chris Cook (Hartford, Mich.) anchoring the unit. Cook has been a starter since his sophomore season and was named Second Team All-MIAA at safety a year ago. Cook ranked third on the team with 61 tackles and also led the squad with four interceptions. The cornerback spots will be filled by seniors Jeff Makowski, Jr. (Maple Heights, Ohio/Garfield Hts. Trinity) and Keman Jacobs (New Orleans, La./Hahnville). Makowski, Jr. played in all 10 games and started nine times. He tallied 28 tackles and three interceptions. Jacobs played in all 10 games during his first year with the Bulldogs and recorded 49 tackles and six pass breakups.

Special Teams

The kicking duties will once again be handled by senior Logan Mitseff (Shelby Twp., Mich./Pontiac Notre Dame). Mitseff connected on 7-of-10 field goals in 2010 including a 47-yarder against Olivet, which was just two yards short of the school record. He connected on two field goals over 40 yards and made his last five attempts to end the season.

The Bulldogs will look to improve in the return game this season. Adrian ranked seventh in the MIAA in punt returns a year ago (6.67 ypr) and were also fourth in kickoff returns with an average of 19.46 yards per return.

Jim Deere was named the 24th head coach in Adrian College football history on November 15,

2009.Deere served as defensive coordinator for three

years (2007-09) and has been on the coaching staff at Adrian College for the past 18 years.

Deere’s first season as head coach at Adrian College featured one of the strongest schedules in school history and the team went 5-5 overall and finished in a second-place tie in the MIAA with a 4-2 league mark. The Bulldogs had four First Team All-MIAA players and five more make the Second Team All-MIAA list. The team ranked second in the MIAA in total defense yielding 308.2 yards per game. The Bulldogs also ranked second in turnover margin (+4) and rushing defense (124.5 ypg). Deere’s first win came on September 11, 2010 with a 40-14 triumph over Defiance College. Deere’s defense also pitched a shutout on October 9 at Olivet (41-0).

The defensive numbers were staggering over the three-year period under coach Deere before taking over as head coach. The Bulldogs quietly became one of the more feared defensive units in Division III and the stats tell the story. In 2009, Adrian finished first in the MIAA in five different statistical categories including scoring defense (16.2 ppg), passing defense (162.3 ypg), total defense (281.6 ypg), pass efficiency defense (94.0) and sacks (26 for minus 158 yards). In addition, AC was 16th nationally in pass efficiency defense, 28th in scoring defense and 17th in tackles for loss.

In 2008, Adrian finished fourth in Division III in total defense limiting their opponents to 239 yards per game. In addition, Deere’s crew ranked fourth in scoring defense (12.4), seventh in rushing defense (71.2 ypg) and fourth in tackles for loss (9.1 per game).

The Bulldog defense finished 2007 as one of the best in school history. The defense ranked first in

the MIAA in nine different statistical categories and finished the year ranked sixth in total defense in Division III. The Bulldogs allowed just 74.6 yards per game on the ground (10th nationally) and 14.4 points per game (12th nationally).

Along with his experience at AC, Deere coached at Sterling Heights Stevenson High School in 1993 and 1994 and Morenci High School in 1996.

A 1989 graduate of Adrian College, Deere was a four-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs and was a player on the 1988 MIAA Championship team.

Deere resides in Adrian and has three children - Angelica, Danielle and Blake.

Coaching Staff

ASSISTANT COACHES

Tyler Haines enters his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs and

will perform the offensive coordinator duties as well as serve as assistant head coach. This is Haines’ second year as offensive coordinator. The previous two seasons he coached linebackers and special teams for Adrian College.

Haines’ duties include coaching the quarterbacks and running backs and the 2010 season proved to be a record-setting year on offense. The team averaged 386 yards per game and scored 25.9 points per contest. He mentored Second Team All-MIAA tailback Jared Edwards, who rushed for 1,011 yards for the season. Haines also coached Second Team All-MIAA performer Mike McGee. McGee set the single-season school record for completions (183), passing yards (2,302) and touchdowns (19). The offense also featured a strong offensive line anchored by First Team All-MIAA tackle Spencer Whittington and Second Team All-MIAA guard Nick Ross.

Haines, a two-time First-Team All-Heartland Conference linebacker, lettered for three years at DC, recording 143 tackles, 39 tackles-for-loss, 9.5 sacks, and four interceptions after transferring from Division II Ashland University. A 2006 pre-season All-American, Haines also garnered ESPN The Magazine Academic all-district honors and was named All-North Region at season’s end.

Also in 2006, Haines was a semi-finalist for the Draddy Trophy, an award known as the “Academic Heisman”. He appeared on the dean’s list three times and ended college with a GPA north of 3.4.

The Piqua, Ohio native was part of a Yellow Jacket defense that finished fourth in the nation in total defense and led the HCAC in rushing defense and total defense in 2005 and 2006. Haines was a team captain in both his junior and senior seasons for Defiance.

At Piqua High School, Haines was a first-team All-Southwest Ohio linebacker and quarterback.

Haines spent the 2007 season coaching football at his alma mater, Piqua High School. He coached the wide receivers and defensive backs as the team compiled an 8-4 record and were regional semifinalists in Ohio’s Division II. Haines graduated from Defiance in December 2006 with a B.S. in integrated social studies.

Tyler and his wife, Logan, reside in Adrian with their 3-month old daughter, Harper.

Keith Uecker begins his first season at Adrian College. Uecker will be handling

the offensive line and has tremendous coaching and playing experience.

Uecker was an All-American at Auburn in 1981 and was a four-year starter for the Tigers, earning All-SEC honors. Serving as a 1981 team captain, he was twice the winner of the Ken Rice Award as the team’s outstanding offensive lineman.

Uecker played in the NFL for 10 seasons, beginning his pro career with the Denver Broncos (1982-84) and then with Green Bay (1984-91). With the Packers, he was a four-year starter and played all five line positions. He was the 1987 recipient of the prestigious Ed Block Courage Award.

After his playing days, Uecker worked with Ohio State University as offensive quality control coach (2009-10) and most recently as offensive line coach with the UFL’s Omaha Nighthawks (2010). He served as the offensive line coach at Wayne State (2004-05) and Akron (1999-2003) before spending several years in the automotive industry. He also did an internship with the Denver Broncos during their 2008 training camp. He earned his accounting degree from Auburn in 1988.

A native of Hollywood, Fla., Uecker has four children: Victoria, Jack, Clayton and Jane.

Bryant Haines returns to the Bulldog coaching staff for his second season and will

once again coach the defensive linemen. Haines will also serve as the strength & conditioning coach for the Bulldogs.

Haines tutored First Team All-MIAA defensive end Austin Fritz a year ago. Fritz was a two-time selection to the conference first team and ranked tied for second in the MIAA in sacks and was fifth in tackles for loss.

Haines spent a one-year stint as a defensive line coach at Manchester College in 2009 prior to coming to Adrian College.

Haines was part of a defensive staff that coached the Spartans’ top-ranked defense in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC). Manchester ranked first in total yards allowed per game and rushing yards allowed per game. The defensive linemen accounted for 144 tackles, 34 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks and two interceptions. His duties included recruiting in the Dayton, Ohio area as well as western and southern Indiana. He also provided weekly game plan ideas and helped break down opponent film.

Manchester compiled a 5-2 record in the HCAC.

Haines graduated in May 2009 from Ball State University with a degree in general studies. He was a four-year starter at linebacker for the Cardinals and a two-time All-Mid American Conference selection. He was named a Freshman All-American in 2005 and was on the Butkus Award Watch List in 2008. He served as a student assistant for Ball State’s spring practice season before going to Manchester. Haines is a native of Piqua, Ohio.

coach wide receivers and special teams. In addition, Chapin serves as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Chapin was a running backs coach during his first season with the Bulldogs. He helped mentor All-MIAA running back Jared Edwards, who rushed for 1,011 yards and five touchdowns.

Chapin spent the 2009 campaign at Southern Tech Prep Academy in Charlotte, N.C. where he served as running backs coach. His duties at Southern Tech Prep included helping students with NCAA Clearinghouse issues and also coordinated operation of academic preparation and community service outreach.

Prior to his time at Southern Tech Prep, Chapin was the varsity offensive coordinator and running backs coach at Dexter (Mich.) High School in 2008. He also served as varsity offensive assistant coach working with quarterbacks in 2007.

Chapin worked for two years at his alma mater as the freshman assistant coach from 2005-06. He was a two-time varsity letterwinner for the Colts and was starting quarterback during his senior year. He was a Scholar Athlete for his entire prep career and also was a captain his senior year.

Chapin earned his bachelor of arts degree in history from the University of Michigan in the spring of 2009. Chapin is a native of Troy, Mich. where he attended Troy High School.

Christon Calley is back for his second year as a member of the Adrian College football

coaching staff. Calley will work on the varsity level with the secondary. He was a standout cornerback for the Bulldogs and also excelled on the track at Adrian College.

Calley spent the 2010 season coaching wide receivers at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He helped produce All-American Jared Jenkins as well as two other Pointers who received First Team All-WIAC honors.

Calley was a member of the MIAA champion 4x100 meter relay team in 2006-2008 and was named First Team All-MIAA in 2007 and 2008. He broke the school record in the 200 meters and also in the 4x100 meter relay during his time at Adrian. Calley was the MIAA 400 meter champion in 2008 and was also named Male Track Athlete of the Year in the MIAA.

On the football field, Calley started all 10 games as a junior and senior. He recorded 20 tackles, three interceptions and five pass breakups as a junior and followed that with 22 tackles, one interception and eight pass breakups as a senior. He was named First Team All-MIAA as a senior.

He graduated in 2009 from Adrian College with a bachelor of arts in international business.

Harry Bailey will serve as the head coach of the junior varsity team at Adrian College

this fall and will also be its defensive coordinator. In addition, Bailey is the outside linebackers coach at the varsity level. Bailey is a native of nearby Hudson and was a standout at linebacker for the Bulldog football

team.Bailey is the son of Greg and Kelly Bailey and has

a bachelor’s degree in secondary education with an emphasis in social studies and a minor in history.

Bailey guided the junior varsity program at Adrian College to an 8-2 record last season.

He was a four-year letterwinner at Adrian College and a two-year starter on one of Division III’s best defenses. He was a captain during his senior season and was named First Team All-MIAA.

In 2007, Bailey started all 10 games and recorded 31 tackles and ranked sixth in the MIAA with 10 tackles for loss.

In 2008, he again started all 10 games and ranked first in the MIAA with 11.5 tackles for loss. He also made 78 tackles including 46 solo stops.

Ryan Maiuri enters his first season with the Adrian College Bulldog football

team. Maiuri will be responsible for coaching the team’s quarterbacks and will also be the offensive coordinator of the junior varsity program.

Maiuri earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He had an emphasis in history during his undergrad days and a counseling major during his post-graduate work. He attended Lakeland College from 2002-08.

Maiuri most recently worked with the La Crosse (Wis.) Spartans of the Indoor Football League as the offensive coordinator in 2010. He coordinated all facets of the offense and worked closely with quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers with the Spartans.

Maiuri also has worked with the tight ends at Winona State University (Minn.) and as an assistant coach at his alma mater working with defensive backs. He helped coach seven defensive backs that received All-NAC recognition. The team was ranked third nationally in Division III in interceptions and was 15th in pass defense efficiency.

Maiuri played collegiately at Lakeland College from 2002-06 as a quarterback. He led the Muskies to its first-ever NCAA Division III playoff berth in 2005 and was named Illini-Badger Conference Player of the Year. He was also named conference offensive player of the year in 2004.

The Bulldogs began the season with their stiffest test of the campaign at #1 Wisconsin-Whitewater, who won the 2009 national championship in Division III. The first quarter was played to a stalemate, but the Warhawks then reeled off 35 in a row for a 35-0 win.

Adam Brandes and Matt Blanchard connected twice through the air. Their first hookup came early in the second quarter and the other came midway through the third quarter. Blanchard finished 19-of-25 for 289 yards and also rushed for 46 yards and a score.

The Bulldogs held a strong rushing attack to 183 yards which was much lower than their previous year’s average. Adrian also held a 34:18 to 25:42 edge in time of possession but could not gain more than 162 total yards of offense against a stout Whitewater defense. The Bulldogs were led by Justin Hemm’s 47 rushing yards on 17 carries. Mitch Gabriele caught three passes for 29 yards and Kyle Timmis also had three catches for 28 yards. Adrian was 5-of-16 on third down conversions and 0-of-2 on fourth down. Mike McGee completed 9-of-11 passes for 64 yards on the afternoon. Darren Walter led the team with nine tackles.

The home opener proved to be a special day as the Bulldogs defeated Defiance, 40-14, and also honored service men and women on the anniversary of the 911 attacks. Adrian did their damage on the ground with an assault on the record books. The Bulldogs rushed for 385 yards on 47 carries and Jared Edwards toted the ball 25 times for 208 yards and a score. Justin Hemm joined his teammate with an over 100-yard day on the ground. Hemm carried just eight times for 138 yards and two scores. Jeremy Southworth also had a rushing touchdown against the Yellow Jackets in the fourth quarter.

Mitch Gabriele caught a 77-yard touchdown pass from Mike McGee in the third quarter for the longest pass play of the season. He finished with two catches for 92 yards. McGee needed to throw just seven times and completed three of those throws for 99 yards. The Bulldogs led 14-2 at halftime and pushed their lead to 24-2 at the end of the third quarter.

Danny Taylor led the Bulldogs with 11 tackles. Jarred Kwiatkowski recorded seven tackles with three coming for a loss.

Adrian welcomed a new face to Performance Stadium in Augustana College and the visiting Vikings left with a 21-7 win over the Bulldogs on a defensive-minded afternoon. Augie gained 292 total yards and their stout defense yielded just 175 total yards for the Bulldogs.

Adrian rushed for minus-four yards on 31 carries and could not get anything started on the ground after tremendous success the week before against Defiance. Augustana rushed for 192 yards on 51 carries and just pounded the ball at Adrian. They were 6-of-12 on third down conversions and kept the Adrian defense on the field too long.

Mike McGee threw for 164 yards connecting on 17-of-31 passes with a score and two interceptions. McGee found Justin Hemm for a 28-yard score at the 2:58 mark of the third quarter which cut the Vikings lead to 14-7. Robert Wood plunged ahead for a one-yard score for Augustana in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to put Adrian behind by two scores.

Danny Taylor and Jarred Kwiatkowski each had 11 tackles and Austin Fritz chipped in seven stops and a sack.

The battle between rivals Adrian and Trine has been one of the best in the MIAA over the past couple of years and 2010 was no different. The 14th-ranked Thunder came to Performance Stadium and escaped with a 24-16 win over the Bulldogs in a highly-anticipated homecoming game.

Trine led 10-0 early in the second quarter but Adrian answered on the final play of the first half as Mitch Gabriele caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Mike McGee to make it 10-7 at the break. Adrian was trying to play catchup as Thomas Wyman caught two critical touchdown passes in the second half from Eric Watt. Gabriele also hauled in a 22-yard scoring strike in the third quarter as the teams traded touchdowns.

Logan Mitseff kicked a 35-yard field goal to make it 24-16 with 1:07 left, but Adrian could not recover the onside kick. McGee finished the game with 293 passing yards and played his best career game against Trine based on the numbers. He also set the Adrian career passing mark (4,961) in the contest.

Jarred Kwiatkowski and Joe Makowski each had 14 tackles with Makowski recording 2.5 tackles for loss.

Adrian at OlivetOct. 9 • Olivet, Mich.Cutler Ath. Complex • Att: 955

It was one of the more dominant performances of 2010 for the Bulldogs and it came on the road at Olivet by the score of 41-0. Both sides of the ball came out to turn the tide of a two-game skid and the Comets had no answer.

Logan Mitseff kicked a pair of field goals and Jeremy Southworth scored on a two-yard run to give Adrian a 13-0 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs went even further ahead with a third quarter touchdown grab by Justin Hemm and an early fourth quarter score by Kyle Timmis from Mike McGee. Scott Normandin’s 12-yard interception return for a score sealed the victory with 5:20 remaining.

Jared Edwards rushed for 138 yards on a career-high 32 carries and a touchdown. Southworth finished with 69 rushing yards on 14 carries. McGee passed for 253 yards on 17-of-28 from the pocket and set the school record for completions in the process. Hemm led the squad with six grabs for 77 yards.

AC went 12-of-19 on third down and 2-of-2 on fourth down to own a plus 15:08 time of possession advantage on the day. Austin Fritz finished with six tackles including three for loss.

Adrian at DePauwOct. 16 • Greencastle, Ind.Blackstock Stadium • Att: 600

One yard is all that separated Adrian from victory at DePauw in a non-conference matchup. The Bulldogs were looking to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season, but DePauw made a goal-line stand in the final minute to preserve a 23-19 victory.

Adrian took a 7-3 lead to end the first quarter as D’ante Thompson hauled in a four-yard pass from Mike McGee capping off a 5:59 drive. Taylor Wagner’s 77-yard punt return for a score knotted things up at 10-10 midway through the second quarter. Alex Koors then caught back-to-back touchdowns from Michael Engle to put the Tigers up 23-10 with 14:15 left in the game.

Adrian did not roll over however and Jared Edwards caught a 43-yard strike from McGee with 9:07 left to make things 23-17. AC got a safety with 2:30 left to cut the lead to 23-19 and then drove the length of the field only to come up three feet short on the winning score.

AC gained 360 yards including 265 through the air. McGee went 22-of-38 for those yards and two scores with no picks. Edwards rushed for 80 yards on 22 totes. Justin Hemm caught nine balls for 93 yards. The Bulldogs struggled in the red zone scoring on 1-of-3 opportunities.

Kalamazoo at AdrianOct. 23 • Adrian, Mich.Performance Stadium • Att: 1,800

The Bulldogs lit up the scoreboard for the second straight year against Kalamazoo with a convincing 58-31 win over the Hornets. Mike McGee tied a school record with five touchdown passes. He threw three of those to Justin Hemm who caught six passes for 119 yards. Mitch Gabriele hauled in the other two and finished with 12 catches for 162 yards, both career highs.

Jared Edwards had a career day carrying for 250 yards, which is five short of the single game school record. He toted the ball 27 times and also had the longest play from scrimmage of the season with a 90-yard score midway through the third quarter. The Bulldogs rolled up 580 yards of total offense with 312 through the air and 268 on the ground.

Kalamazoo held its own with a 24-20 lead with 2:54 left in the first half. Adrian then flexed its muscle by scoring the next 28 points with Edwards’ run capping off the onslaught. Jeff Makowski ended the scoring with a 28-yard interception return for a score with 3:49 left in the contest. The Bulldog defense tied the school record by intercepting Nick Jones six times. Both teams combined to go 9-of-9 in the red zone.

GAME#8

Adrian at AlbionOct. 30 • Albion, Mich.Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium • Att: 3,007

After putting together a couple of solid wins, the Bulldogs fell 38-21 at Albion, giving the Britons their second straight win over Adrian. The Bulldogs had won the previous seven straight in the series. The legs of Clinton Orr did in Adrian as he ran for 233 yards and a pair of touchdowns averaging 7.1 yards per carry on the day. Spencer Krauss also threw for two scores and 126 yards as the Britons did not turn the ball over all game.

Albion built a 17-0 lead after the first 15 minutes and Adrian was forced to put the ball in the air to come back. Mike McGee did just that to the tune of a school record 33 completions for 367 yards. He did throw three interceptions however which led to a punishing ground game by the home team. Mitch Gabriele established a new school record with 15 receptions for 161 yards. Justin Hemm went over 100 yards receiving with seven catches for 113 yards and a score.

McGee also rushed for a pair of scores in the contest as the Bulldogs gained 459 total yards in 79 plays. Adrian was just 2-of-12 on third down and turned it over a total of five times. Danny Taylor made nine tackles.

The Bulldogs defeated the Flying Dutchmen for the third straight season with a 33-7 win on the first Saturday in November. It was a well-balanced attack for the Bulldogs who gained an even 500 yards of total offense and limited Hope to 191 yards in one of the best defensive efforts of the season.

Mike McGee tossed three touchdown passes and in the process set the career school record with 47. McGee did not have his most efficient game going 12-of-23 but did throw for 160 yards with no interceptions. Mitch Gabriele caught six passes for 115 yards and a score. Justin Hemm and D’ante Thompson also caught a touchdown pass. Thompson’s 27-yarder opened the scoring with 4:22 left in the first quarter. Hemm and Gabriele’s scoring grabs both happened in the third quarter to pull away from Hope at 27-7. Jared Edwards romped for a 79-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He finished with his third 200-yard day of the year with 248 yards on 33 carries and two scores. Hope was limited to 2-of-15 on third down and 1-of-4 on fourth down. Darren Walter collected seven tackles for the Bulldogs with a sack.

GAME#10

Adrian at AlmaNov. 13 • Alma, Mich.Bahlke Field • Att: 1,400

The Bulldogs ended the season in style with a tough road win, 24-13, at Alma College to complete the year with a 5-5, 4-2 record. Adrian led 14-7 going into the halftime locker room. Justin Hemm caught a pair of first half touchdowns from Mike McGee. Hemm’s first came with 2:59 left in the opening quarter from 30 yards out to cap off a 13-play drive which lasted 5:12. His second was from 40 yards with 1:43 left in the half to cap off an 80-yard drive in 2:51. Alma cut the lead in half, 14-7, on a 56-yard touchdown catch by Austin Montgomery with 44 seconds left until intermission.

Logan Mitseff kicked a 27-yard field goal and Damon Brown followed with a one-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring in the third quarter. Adrian outgained Alma, 373-254, as both teams combined to rush for 82 yards on 70 carries. Mike McGee carried Adrian on his right arm going 28-of-40 for 327 yards and two scores with one pick. McGee set the single season mark for passing yards and touchdowns against the Scots. Mitch Gabriele also set a single season record for receptions finishing the game with nine grabs for 71 yards. Justin Hemm caught 10 balls for 147 yards.
