BLACK YOUTH ACHIEVEMENTSThe 4th Annual Awards Ceremony
SATURDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 2012
The Tabernacle, London W11
Nineteen Restaurant & Bar have kindly provided your drinks this evening
Thank you for joining us at the 4th annual BYA Awards where we celebrate
the personal accomplishments of young people and promote positive images
and role models.
Tonight at The Tabernacle, you will be part of a movement that is creating a
platform of youth leadership.
Since 2009, the BYA Awards have showcased some of the UK’s most inspiring
and progressive individuals, challenging the negative stereotype of ‘disadvantage
and under-achievement’. If you have attended BYA Awards before, we’re sure
that you experienced a feeling of pride that our young people are contributing
in such powerful ways to the community.
BYA are in a privileged position. We get to work alongside some amazingly talented
young people who fill us with confidence that a significant change is taking place.
Their voice within politics is growing stronger, entrepreneurship is expanding
rapidly and the desire for success and achievement is a key priority for them.
BYA will continue to support those who are striving for more.
Please take the opportunity to get to know one another this evening. There will
be a wealth of knowledge, experience and creativity in the building that can
be used to form partnerships and build empires.
Have a wonderful evening as you enjoy BYA Awards 2012

During the summer, BYA worked in conjunction with CACFO (Croydon African Caribbean Family Organisation) to deliver the 2nd annual Croydon’s Next Top Role Model. This event was the highlight of a three week personal development programme that saw 30 young people between the ages of 7 and 19 come together to learn new skills such as raising sponsorship, administration, events management. They worked completely out of their comfort zone, but by the day of the event they had grown in confidence and abilities.Croydon’s Next Top Role Model then
saw a number of local people nominated for their contributions to the community, with a public vote from the 150-strong audience choosing their top 3.
BYA were invited to the Fairfield Halls in Croydon for a ‘Conversation for Change’ with the great Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his daughter Reverend Mpho Tutu. A number of the BYA Ambassadors attended the evening and left feeling inspired and thrilled about being part of such an event. Two of the BYA team this year undertook training with the Tutu Foundation and completed their Ubuntu coaching course that is part of the ‘Conversations for Change’ programme, which looks at ways to bring together community members of all ages, faiths, ethnicit ies and cultural backgrounds to build robust skills to negotiate anger, conflict and difference.
Following the BYA Awards in 2011, the first ever BYA Ambassadors were recruited and introduced
on May 9th at an event called ‘Building Your Aspirations’, which was held at Pearson Plc head office on The Strand, London. The Ambassadors will eventually become THE face of BYA, representing young people nationally and internationally. To support them in their roles they will receive ongoing training and opportunities to acquire new skills and expertise. This year they worked alongside Legal & General and Elaine Powell. Further training will take place in 2013 as we welcome new Ambassadors from the 2012 award finalists.
BYA will be launching a new project in 2013 called ‘Street Trader’ which has received funding from the Sojourner Trust. Street Trader has been designed to give young people an understanding and hands-on experience of investments including property, stocks and shares, and gold. By having an insight into these areas at an earlier age, informed decisions can be made around careers, money management and long term planning, reducing poverty and everything associated with it. If you would like to work with us on this project please contact [email protected]
