Start your trip by boarding a train! From stations all over Germany and many cities in other European countries, every day there are more than 400 trains that will take you straight to Frankfurt Airport. By taking advantage of them, you can almost start your vacation or business trip when you step out your front door. It’s extremely easy to transfer from a train to a plane or vice versa—the railway and flight schedules are excellently coordinated with one another.

ICE, Regio, S-Bahn – they all stop at the airport

The choice is yours: every day of the week, more than 170 ICE and IC trains stop at Frankfurt Airport’s long-distance train station. From Cologne or Stuttgart, the trip takes only an hour—it can’t get much faster than that. In addition, more than 220 regional trains connect the airport with towns and cities in the German states of Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Bavaria. And to top it off, suburban (S-Bahn) trains to and from downtown Frankfurt and destinations in the Rhine-Main region leave every 15 minutes.

Intermodality—networking of air and rail transportation—is one of the most important reasons for the success of Frankfurt Airport.

Airlines with AiRail Check-in 5

Page 4: By train to your plane - Frankfurt Airport

– You can check your luggage right after arriving by train.– It’s only a few steps to the AiRail check-in counters.– You start your trip in a relaxed mood.– You have more time to enjoy the airport’s rich offerings.

You’ll find the AiRail Terminal in the passageway that connects the long-distance train station with Terminal 1.

Simply follow the signs for “AiRail Check-In” or “AiRail Terminal”. Check-in is possible there until 60 minutes before departure, and the counters are open daily from 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. (Lufthansa counters close at 8 p.m.). We recommend that you allow enough time to complete the check-in procedure. When landing again at Frankfurt Airport after your trip, you pick up your luggage in the usual way at the terminal’s baggage claim, just follow the signs (except passengers of Lufthansa AiRail Service, see next chapter).

Lufthansa AiRail Service

If you are taking a Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt and are traveling to the airport by ICE train, you can check in online or using your smartphone between 15 minutes and 23 hours before the train‘s scheduled departure time. The AiRail boarding pass serves as your ticket (and is only valid on the booked connection). It must be issued before you start your journey. After arriving at the airport‘s long-dis-tance train station, you can then conveniently drop off your bags at the Lufthansa counter in the AiRail terminal that‘s just a few steps away.

The Lufthansa AiRail Service also works in the opposite direction. At the airport where you begin your trip, you can check in all the way to Düsseldorf, Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, Karlsruhe, Cologne, or Stuttgart and receive your train ticket as well. After landing in Frankfurt, follow the exit signs and then head for the AiRail Terminal. Claim your baggage and take it through customs there. More information on Lufthansa’s AiRail Service is availab-le at www.frankfurt-airport.com, www.lufthansa.com, and www.bahn.com.

– Check in at least 15 minutes before your train leaves.– Carry your bags onto the train.– After arriving at the long-distance train station at the airport, walk to the AiRail Terminal to drop off your bags. You must do this no later than 40 minutes before your flight departs.

How you benefit from AiRail Check-in:

– From Armani to Zegna, at the airport you’ll find a huge range of shops that carry brands from around the world at fair prices. There are also more than 90 restaurants and bistros to satisfy any taste. Our Shopping & Dining Guide will help you get your bearings.

– Surf the Internet for free at the airport. You can access the Web via Wi-Fi in the terminals for as long as you like. If you don’t have an Internet-capable device of your own, you can use one of the many stand-up or sit-down terminals around the airport (for a fee).

– Take it easy in one of the remodeled, comfortable relax zones at the airport and let the time fly by until it’s time to head for the gate. Or else visit one of the airport lounges.

– Traveling with kids: There are several play areas in the terminals for your kids to play and romp in while you catch your breath. You can also borrow a stroller for your toddler free of charge at the following locations: in Terminal 1 at the Service Point in Concourse B (pre-security) and at information desk 10 in Concourse B (post-security), and in Terminal 2 at the Service Point (pre-security).

Many airlines and travel operators offer Rail & Fly tickets for Frankfurt Airport. They are a good deal, since they let you travel to the airport and back again conveniently and economically.

How you benefit from Rail & Fly:– You can leave from and return to any of more than 5,600 train stations in Germany.– It’s easy to purchase and print out tickets at www.accesrail.com/checkin or at any Deutsche Bahn ticket machine.– You can check in and drop off your luggage in the AiRail Terminal at Frankfurt Airport (see page 5 for the participating airlines).

Here‘s how it works: along with confirmation of your booked flight, you receive the link for the print@home process and a personal “pickup number“ for your train trip. You can then conveniently print out your Rail & Fly ticket by entering your name and ticket number or booking code at www.accesrail.com/checkin at home or anywhere else. Alternatively, you can enter the pickup number in a Deutsche Bahn ticket machine and receive your Rail & Fly ticket there. Please note that you must present your flight booking confirmation and a valid passport or ID card in addition to your ticket on the train.

Please also keep in mind that you must print your ticket out just before beginning your outbound or return trip (if possible, no sooner than 72 hours beforehand). Rail & Fly tickets are only valid on the day of your flight and the preceding day and/or the day of your return as well as the following day. You‘ll find detailed information on Rail & Fly and a list of all airlines and travel operators that offer it at www.bahn.de/railandfly.
