History of L’Esquerra

Further west, the most modern part of the left side of Eixample consists of buildings in different architectural styles built from the 1930s onwards

The landmarks are two older buildings:

•Old Batlló Factory--now the home of the technical college Escola Industrial

•The former municipal slaughterhouse is now the site of the modernista style Parc de Joan Miró, with the artist’s monumental sculpture Dona i Ocell (Women and Bird) rising up in the centre

How to get there: Metro L1, stop Plaça Espanya and L3, stop Tarragona.| Bus 27, 109, 115 and V7.| Barcelona Bus Turístic, stop Plaça d'Espanya.

Page 20: BY: KAITLYN FINE & CHRISTINA PATRACUOLLA EXIAMPLE ESQUERRA

More history…Formerly It was constructed by Batlló family

L’Escola Industrial de Barcelona formed a large textile factory until 1908, where it was taken over by Diputacio de Barcelona

Josep Puig Cadafalch restored and adapted the old fabric and converted it to L’escola Elemental de Treball

In 1914 the school/university was inaugurated to concentrate on teaching future factory workers.

1927- Engineering school moved to Escola Industrial too
