THE PANTHEON IN ROMEBy John Goettee
Location
The Pantheon was built in the Piazza della Rotanda in Rome.
It was first built between 27-25 B.C. After it burned down, it was rebuilt in 80 A.D. and again in 110 A.D.
The structure still stands today.
Purpose
The Pantheon was first built by the Consul Agrripa. It was later rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian. What he built is what is still there today.
It was built to be a temple for all of the Roman Gods.
It was used as a temple, and people worshipped there. Nowadays it is used as a church.
Uniqueness
The Pantheon is known for its fascinating architecture, having a series of intersecting arches and a large dome at the top
It took seven years to be built. The Romans built the Pantheon using
lighter building materials near the top of the structure and using heavier materials as they got closer to the bottom of the temple. This alleviated the large weight of the dome at the top of the Pantheon.
Ancient Foresight
Many other structure built since the making of the Pantheon have modeled its unique architectural design.
Such buildings include several libraries, universities, and Thomas Jefferson’s Rotunda.
It is not one of the 7 Wonders of the World.
