COMPANY PROFILE One Fell Swoop is a contemporary circus company that aims to re-examine the dynamics of acrobatic ensemble work and the relationships within it. Our practice focuses on bringing group acrobatics into an aerial context, and delivering a new perspective to the trust and risk implicit in all relationships, acrobatic or otherwise. We tour our show to put our brand of circus before a diverse range of audiences. Our ensemble aerial work is innovative and unique, and expands audiences’ appreciation of contemporary circus. Touring is also essential in helping us maintain a sustainable practice.

ABOUT THE SHOW SHOW SYNPOSIS By a Thread is a new ensemble circus creation exploring the relationship between trust and play on an innovating aerial apparatus. Long spools of white rope run through pulley sheaves and wrap around bodies, explicitly connecting the artists’ movements above and off the ground. The actions of one acrobat affect and implicate the movements of the others in a precise negotiation of cause and effect. The performers use this metaphor for connectedness to explore the give and take, balance, and dynamics of relating to one another. Leaving the realm of the solo act, where the performer relies on their individual strength; our acrobats rely on the strength of the group to hold the end of the rope, keeping them aloft. By a Thread offers rich visuals of inventive aerial acrobatics and spectacular skills from some of Australia’s best emerging circus artists. With intense training in a breadth of contemporary circus disciplines, the performers have pooled their knowledge and skills, and then exploded the traditional boundaries of these disciplines to create a show where classic techniques are used in expansive ways and new skills are made possible.

BIOGRAPHIES Charice Rust Charice Rust is not what you’d expect from an aerialist. From an early age working on her family’s sheep farm, she realised she enjoyed and excelled in using her body’s capacity for strength in movement. When she discovered circus she found her specialty, aerial straps, suited her enthusiasm for training hard and for defying expectations of what female bodies are capable of. Drawing on her intense training at NICA Charice challenges the status quo of aerial artistry, developing her unique straps style and vocabulary. She is co-founder of emerging contemporary circus company One Fell Swoop Circus where she combines her passion for innovative expression and considered ideas into creating powerful physical performances. Jonathan Morgan Jonathan Morgan is a Melbourne based circus artist who has been captivating audiences since he decided that perhaps partial differential equations were not for him. Leaving the Australian National University’s Bachelor of Philosophy (Science) to pursue circus, Jonathan found a passion for connecting with audiences on stage and developing circus shows with unique and interesting ideas. With experience in calculating projectile motion as well as physically doing it, Jonathan graduated from three years of intense training at the National Institute of Circus Arts in Aerial Rope and Slackwire. Jonathan is passionate about creating and performing circus that pushes the boundaries of ensemble and aerial work, and includes audiences in the joy he finds in circus arts. To pursue the ideas he felt demanded circus’s attention Jonathan co-founded One Fell Swoop Circus with Charice Rust. Together they enjoy the challenge of actively stretching what a circus show can be. Maya Tregonning Since the age of three Maya has tried her hand at ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, gymnastics, drama, piano and even magic. At the age of 12 Maya stumbled upon a circus street show in Fremantle, WA and was inspired to start a circus journey. A graduate of the National Institute of Circus Arts Maya specialized in Aerial ladder, Foot juggling and Group Acrobatics. She has performed for MAXIMA, TEOC and recently completed successful seasons in Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne Fringe Festivals with her ensemble devised show ‘Out of this World’, a theatrical circus comedy for young audiences. Sarah Gray Initially dreaming of having a career in architecture, Sarah Gray’s life visions dramatically transformed after seeing “Ovo” by Cirque Du Soleil, in 2013. Originally from a small rural town in Western Australia, Sarah unwittingly began her performing career at the tender age of 7, taking up acrobatics at the local dance school. The next ten years saw her learn other styles of dance including ballet, jazz, lyrical/contemporary and tap, but her favourite was always acrobatics. After reluctantly auditioning for the National Institute of Circus Arts, she now finds herself a graduate of the school, specializing in fixed trapeze, handstands and group acrobatics. She also is passionate about

contortion and is continually developing her contortion skills. Sarah found circus and is now pursuing something she truly loves. Ryan Darwin At a young age Ryan Darwin threw a pair of tomatoes up in the air and has not come down since. A worldly traveller and self-trained artist, he believes you can find a way even in the most adverse circumstances to create something spectacular. Ryan is a quirky, driven performer who uses a combination of aerial rope, juggling, and handstands to create moments of beautiful simplicity. His aim – to present circus at a human level. Piri Goodman Piri Goodman is an emerging artist specialising in circus and physical theatre. Piri started his circus training at the age of nine with Warehouse Circus in Canberra and co-founded Poncho Circus company. In the last four years Poncho Circus have developed three theatre productions, one site-specific production and have performed at countless events in the ACT, NSW, VIC and in 2015 their first international performance in Phuket, Thailand. Piri is a graduate of the National Institute of Circus Arts specialising in Handstands, Straps and Banquine. Piri strives to create work that engages audiences, developed with an emphasis on breaking expectations and pushing boundaries.

AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT OVERVIEW We have previously conducted a post-show Q&A and are happy to include this in the night if desired by the venue. We have also previously set up a ‘photo corner’ in the foyer using a retired performance rope used in the show as an installation. We love that the audience is able to come and feel the exact type of rope we are using on stage and connect with the show in a tactile way. We have several spare lengths of rope that we have used to decorate a foyer. We love creating specific content about the places we travel to for social media, including unusual acrobatics at local landmarks. WORKSHOPS General Circus Workshop Time: 1.0 – 1.5 hrs No of participants: 8 – 36, can be children or adults What we need: Acromat or equivalent (jigsaws, scatter mats) What we teach: Combination of acrobalance, tumbling, juggling By a Thread explores ideas of trust and risk, as well as the joys of interacting with others. This workshop develops these ideas further in an inclusive and supportive environment. The focus on acrobalance in this workshop lets participants experience the trust and joy of working with others to hold counterbalances and build pyramids, and to negotiate risk by challenging themselves physically and trying new things. There are no physical requirements to participate. Advanced Circus Workshop Time: 1.0 – 1.5 hrs No of participants: 8 – 16, can be children or adults What we need: Acromat or equivalent, crashmats What we teach: Advanced tumbling and handstands, advanced acrobalance This workshop is aimed at locals who have a physical background in dance, gymnastics or circus and are interested in advancing their skills and improving their technique with high-level instruction. If there is a local circus community we can also run a variety of aerial masterclasses in their facilities in a selection of aerial apparatus including rope, straps, cloudswing, tissue, and trapeze.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Audience

Segment

Ideas on how to activate them

Families By a Thread is definitely appropriate for families with children and

is a great night out for all. Families are attracted to the romantic

idea of circus, but are often also looking for a slightly cooler, more

artsy experience. Our professionally shot and edited trailers and

teaser videos shared on social media have proven very effective in

capturing this segment as they show off our spectacular acrobatics

and tricks, as well as our modern aesthetic.

Social night out

for groups of

friends

By a Thread explores themes of friendship, the joy of being

together and of supporting each other, and so is an excellent

uplifting night out for a group of adult friends. This segment

consume art as a way of enjoying quality social time with friends

and we have found that offering a special deal with a ticket for free

drinks at the venue bar or a local bar captures their desire for an

expanded social experience around the show. Promoting this offer

on social media, in local print media, or on local radio is effective.

Couples By a Thread is also a great ‘date night’ experience as it is all about

relationships between people, and explores moments of romance,

trust and support. We have had success offering special deals for a

‘dinner and a show’ experience at a local restaurant through social

media competitions and giveaways.

Wide

mainstream

audience

We believe By a Thread has the capacity to engage a particularly

wide audience due to the attraction of circus’ mainstream heritage

and classic ideas of ‘going to the Circus’. It is therefore an excellent

show for audiences who otherwise might not engage with

contemporary performing arts. We have found success in

leveraging the attraction of acrobatics and circus stunts to capture

wide audiences.

Interested in

circus, dance,

theatre

By a Thread is perfect for audiences already engaged in circus, as

well as in dance and theatre as it blurs the lines between these

genres and has strong elements of all three. It stands out for

circus-engaged audiences through its use of an innovative

apparatus and aerial acrobatics that have never before been used

in Australia. We strongly believe in By a Thread’s ability to tell

compelling narratives and explore complex ideas through its

unique physical vocabularies. It explores artistic ideas not despite,

but rather because of, the spectacular, entertaining circus of which

it comprises. It is therefore excellent for dance and theatregoers

looking for dramatic nuance and theatricality. We find this segment

is attracted to our crisp, modern aesthetic in our promotional

photos and stills shared on social media pages like Facebook and

Instagram.

Adventurous,

social media

savvy 25-35 year

olds

For this segment consuming arts is an important part of their life as

they like to be on the cutting edge of cultural production. They are

constantly on the lookout for new experiences and ideas, and seek

the arts for reasons ranging from creative inspiration to pure

entertainment. By a Thread is perfect for this segment as it is on

the cutting-edge of Australian contemporary circus production. This

segment is generally highly digitally engaged and use the internet

to program their cultural consumption. In this way, online reviews

of shows that come from reputable sources are useful to help

convince them that they will have a quality experience. Our

extremely positive reviews from sources such as ArtsHub and the

Australian Arts Review are incredibly useful for capturing the

interest of this audience. Also asking audience to engage directly

on social media through ‘tag a mate’ or ‘be the first to comment’

posts are very effective in building word of mouth around a

performance.

MEDIA AND MARKETING QUESTIONS How did the concept of By A Thread come about? Why 7 acrobats and 30m of rope? We made By a Thread as we wanted to make work that explores the trust implicit in ensemble acrobatic work and apply this to aerials. It can be challenging developing group aerial circus acts as aerialists are often isolated from other performers high up in the air on their apparatus. Our cool aerial apparatus breaks this right down as it is the hands and strength of the ensemble members that hold each other up, rather than rigging and hardware. It is the perfect medium for exploring the trust, risk and joy inherent in the everyday relationships we have as human beings. Our rationale behind the show is to create an intimate audience experience around the trust and risk implicit in engaging with others. The configuration of the rope on stage and our acrobatic ensemble relationship is the vehicle through which these ideas are explored. The skills are high-level, the tricks are real, and there is no safety net, only the hands and strength of the ensemble working together to hold their castmates aloft. How long did it take to perfect the show? How often do your performers train? Initially we spent hours and hours of exploring answers to questions like “hey what if we did this…” or “would it work if we…” Due to the nature of the apparatus we have had to adapt existing acrobatic skill, and developed new and unique techniques. We have undertaken extensive acrobatic research and experimentation on the apparatus that has given us a broad physical vocabulary of skill and group acrobatics in the air. We have been developing the show for about 2 years, bringing it from an idea that we trialled in a small circus competition, to a professional contemporary circus show. We are always training, either on our own personal skill regimes or on the show. How do you want viewers to feel after seeing the show? Circus is such a powerful art form because what you see before you is actually what is happening. When you see someone taking a risk by hanging upside down from a rope that is held up only by other people, well that’s what is happening. While this risk is always present in circus, so is joy. There is something incredibly joyful and fun in using our bodies in powerful and creative ways, and working so closely together with others on stage. In By a Thread we deal with these two heightened emotional states and bring that feeling to the audience by immersing them in it. One of our favourite pieces of

Page 11: By a Thread By One Fell Swoop Circus a Thread... · 2018. 7. 5. · By a Thread Page 3 of 15 COMPANY PROFILE One Fell Swoop is a contemporary circus company that aims to re-examine

feedback is when audience members say, “it looked so much fun I just wanted to join in and have a go with you”, and then we know we are succeeding. Where do you hope to see By A Thread in the next 5 years? We would like to share By a Thread with as many people as possible and all over the world. We love that circus shows are a live artform - for each presentation the audience participates in growing and changing the show. What's your highest star rating from a previous reviewer? Do you have a grab/quote to support this rating? Star Ratings: 4.5 stars – ArtsHub 4.5 stars – The West Australian 4 stars - The Advertiser 4 stars - Everything Adelaide “An intricate and mesmerising piece of art” – ArtsHub “It’s a bonnie, wee show, full of spectacle and heart. It reaffirms the idea that any rewarding endeavour between two or more people – whether romantic, in friendship, or acrobatic – begins and ends with true eye contact. Beautiful.” – The Australian Arts Review “The risks they took were in the stunts, as well as in their storytelling.” – Australian Arts Review “A group of exceptional humans pushing the limits of their art” – The West Australian Media hooks, angles, stories about By a Thread Seven emerging circus artists By a Thread features seven emerging circus artists from Melbourne’s National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) – the only Centre for Excellence for circus arts in Australia. The ensemble is comprised of graduates who have all undergone intensive circus training as part of the three-year Bachelor of Circus Arts at NICA. Attending ‘circus university’ consists of hours of intense physical training everyday in a number of circus disciplines, extensive dance and drama units, as well as relevant theory classes that make up the full-time course. Going out on a limb, this is the debut show from this exciting new company at the cutting edge of contemporary circus. Circus reimagined and revitalised The artists in By a Thread are amongst some of the most exciting upcoming circus artists today. They have spent three years of intensive training honing aerial technique and perfecting elite level skills. The performers have taken their formal training experience and adapted it to their innovative aerial apparatus, exploding the traditional boundaries of these disciplines to create a show where classic techniques are used in expansive ways and new skills are made possible. A day in the life at ‘circus university’ At the National Institute of Circus Arts we studied everything we need to know to be a professional acrobat. Where other universities have lectures and tutorials, we had tumbling classes or aerial lessons up 8 metres high. Our ‘majors’ included things like foot juggling, aerial straps, handstands, and slackrope walking. We were assessed on how long we could hold a handstand, how flat were our splits, and how do we connect with an audience. Our homework was strength and conditioning training, act creation, and hours

and hours of practice. It is probably the only bachelor’s course that comes with the risk of rolling your ankle, dislocating a shoulder or getting a mad rope burn. But it was all worth it when you walk out on that stage. Innovative ensemble aerial circus on a single apparatus The show features an innovative aerial apparatus not previously used by an ensemble in Australia. The apparatus is one long rope that extends from the floor, through two industrial pulleys and back to the floor – the whole show centres around this single rope. When a performer climbs or hangs from the rope the ensemble must provide an equal force on the other end. This instantly creates relationships between performers, which we use to mimic the everyday relationships we have as human beings – romance, friendship, isolation, miscommunication, hilarity, confusion. Two industrial pulleys and 30 metres of rope! To make our cool new apparatus we have sourced two 15kg industrial steel pulleys from a construction company, a 30metre white cotton rope from a sailing supplier, and seven acrobats from all over Australia. Throughout the life of By a Thread we have gone through 100s of metres of rope! Driving the show around Australia In it’s lifetime By a Thread has packed it’s acrobats and rope into a van and driven the 3500km from Melbourne to Perth across the Nullabor and back, not once but TWICE! Seven acrobats stuffed into a van for hours and hours makes for some epic roadtrip games! Meet the cast Our ensemble of seven is a diverse bunch including a former gymnast from Ulladulla, a street busker from New Zealand, and a dancer from rural Western Australia. Jon left a degree in mathematics and physics to pursue circus as his career; Charice built the strength for her male-dominated specialty working on her grandmother’s sheep farm; Maya can juggle objects with her feet; Piri is from Canberra. Funny anecdotes/stories One time a performer lost a lot of weight after being ill which played havoc with our counterweight system – he was so much lighter he kept drifting upwards like a balloon. Yes the rope ties itself into knots all the time. Once the 30m rope tied itself in a massive knot during a show and we had to untangle it onstage. Embarrassing but hilarious. the anchor, remaining steadfast and true, allowing someone else the opportunity to fly
