What’s your favorite thing about living in SoCal?My favorite thing about living in Southern California, Hermosa Beach in particular, is that I get to walk everywhere and be outdoors. There is always something to do whether it’s trying the abundance of new restaurants with amazing food, going to the beach, or even hitting up Disneyland. An hour in any direction can take you to a completely different area full of people with different mentalities, different cultures, and completely different scenery. Snowboarding and surfing in one day is possible. But my most favorite part about living in Southern California is that this where I have always called home. I’m surrounded by the people who I love the most.Describe yourself in one sentence:I am an athletic, ambitious, spontaneous girl who enjoys her independence. What do you like to do in your spare time?I love beach volleyball. Not only is it my job but it’s also my favorite hobby. That’s when you know you’re blessed and lucky in life: when your passions become your work. If I’m not playing volleyball then I love spending time with my friends and family, cooking, photography, traveling, a good book, sporting events and as embarrassing as this is, a thorough cleaning of my apartment. Nothing feels better than having a clean, organized living space. What drives you? What drives me is the desire to be the best and seeing what I am capable of and then watching how hard work can make things happen. There are days where I want to give up and moving forward is tough but those are the days where I try to remember why I started. The thought of standing on the podium in 2016 is some-thing far too amazing to give upIf you had to eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?If I had to eat one food for the rest of my life, it would be sushi. You can get so creative with what is put into a roll that I feel it would never get boring.Where do you see yourself living in 5 years, and what would you like to be doing?Don’t make me think about 5 years from now. I’ll be 30. That’s a scary thought. What’s on your iPod right now?Everything. I love latin music and hip hop. My new favorite song to blast is Turn All the Lights Off by T-PainFavorite quote?I LOVE quotes, especially inspirational ones. If I had to pick one I think it would be “There are NO shortcuts to anyplace worth going.”What’s something most people don’t know about you?I am insanely sensitive. I have this strong front but I’m a total mush pot. What would be your absolute perfect day?My absolute perfect day would be waking up in the morning and heading over to Java Man for my cup of coffee. Coming home and cooking up a great breakfast of egg whites with onions, spinach, and tomatoes and pairing it with my favorite spinach smoothie: banana, spinach, blueberries, flax seed and almond milk. Head-ing down to the beach to play volleyball all afternoon. Coming home and showering and pulling myself together and heading to a Lakers game with a couple good girlfriends and then coming home and taking a red eye to NYC so I could spend the next day exploring the city. When did you start playing volleyball? When I was 12.

Favorite personal volleyball moment? When I was playing volleyball in Davis at the Festival and was really struggling with grasping the sport. I was uncoordinated and was ready to give up on volleyball all together. All I remember is near the end of the multiple day tournament I made this one SPECTACULAR diving play and we won the point. Everyone cheered and I felt on top of the world. Something just clicked inside me and made me realize I could actually be good at this sport.

The artwork created by Adam Allison at Hoss Designs is like nothing you’ve ever set eyes on before. Life-like images emerge out of wood as if scorched there by nature itself. A giant Kodiak bear growls at you from the surface of a coffee table. A guardian angel looms over you from a mural hanging on a wall, the details found in his feathers making him seem as if he has stood there forever. Marilyn Monroe’s seductive gaze eyes you from afar, permanently etched into a plank of wood, looking more natural and realistic than a photograph.

These are the pieces that can only come from artist and South Bay local Adam Allison. “I’ve always been an artist,” says Adam. “and I was lucky enough to at-tend the Joe Kubert Art School in New Jersey, where I honed my skills and learned how to take it seriously as a career.” Since then, Adam has made artwork for people all over the South Bay and beyond. Most notably, Adam created a portrait of Snoop Dogg for the man himself. Adam says Snoop and his wife were “truly blown away by it.”, which isn’t a surprise at all, considering how breathtaking each piece of Adam’s artwork is.

Growing up in a hunting community in Missouri, Adam has always been inspired by wildlife. His latest projects have focused on eye-popping animals com-ing to life on all different types of furniture. You can see the intensity on the snarling face of his favorite new piece, “Kodiak Attack”. Imagine how awesome and terrifying it would be for your guests to rest their feet on a Kodiak bear coffee table in the middle of your living room! His next piece will feature two monster-sized white tail bucks battling each other on what is sure to be a piece of furniture of epic propor-tions. Adam now wants to focus more on furniture making.

He loves the idea of being able to use artwork on a daily basis, and has begun to scorch his designs on all types of surfaces: from tables, benches and chairs, to cabinets and trunks.

The work that goes into each one of Adam’s art pieces is a painstaking, time-consuming process. He starts by choosing the perfect wood to use as his canvas, usually birch or pine. He then cuts the wood to size and distresses it by grinding and sanding it. Next, Adam projects his designed image onto the wood. The longest part of the process is using a hand wood burner with only a 1/4” tip to burn most of the image into the wood. He distresses it some more and combines different wood stains to create texture and highlights, and finally coats the piece with polyure-thane as a protectant. The result is an one-of-a-kind piece of art that is sure to last a lifetime.

So be sure to check out Adam’s website or shoot him an email and visit his shop. You might get scared, but you won’t be disappointed.

“Classic buildings, Modern Facilities, Timeless Bodies”

This is the motto of the newly opened Easton Gym Co., Manhat-tan Beach located in North Manhattan Beach. Owned and oper-ated by Toby and Stacy Johnson of Easton Gym Co, Hollywood and Manhattan Beach resident, Kris Kamm. This new state of the art facility is filling the long needed gap for a full service member-ship gym west of Sepulveda. In 1938 Harvey Easton and legendary “godfather of fitness’ Jack LaLane founded the original Easton Gym on Beverly Blvd in Hol-lywood where it still stands today. Through the years this classic building has cemented itself as the premier workout facility for the surrounding community. You might find a famous movie star on the treadmill next to the local rabbi chatting up the local barrista who is training with that internationally known personal trainer. A sense of community and comfort radiates through the exposed brick walls. Now, 74 years later, that same tradition and sense of community has come to the South Bay.

Step inside Easton Gym Co., Manhattan Beach’s spacious in-terior and you will never guess that it was the old Harvey Wash-bangers Laundromat! Floor to ceiling windows illuminate the open space design of the North and South workout studios. The North Studio is filled with brand new state of the art LifeFitness machines, cable cross over functional trainers plus a full cardio area with brand new treadmills, Elliptical Cross trainers, Step Mills, Stationary bikes and a rowing machine all wired with My Entertainment audio so you can listen to the bank of television overhead, your iPod or Pandora radio.

The South studio houses all of the free weights, squat racks, Smith machine, Olympic benches, preacher curl, standing calf raise and much more for you to push your workouts to the extreme.

The upstairs Classroom has panoramic, unobstructed views from Malibu to Catalina for you to enjoy as you focus on Yoga, Kickboxing, Group Cycle, Mat Pilates, Barre Works , Group TRX and hard core Body Sculpt classes. The views are so spec-tacular that Swell Magnet has established the Easton Gym El Porto Cam for surfers to get the best break views in the South Bay. The instructors at Easton Gym Co. are some of the most highly regarded in the South Bay including, Eli Rohde, Lori Steele, Trina Solomon, Kori Clausen, Kerstin Norman, Eddie Lester, Bobbie Hendrickson and Olga Shields. Visit our website to find your favorite instructors class schedules: eastongymco.com

There are beautiful, newly remodeled men’s and women’s locker rooms with large personal lockers and showers to accommodate your schedule along with plenty of FREE parking in the under-ground garage located on 40th St below the facility.

Membership is priced at a very reasonable $65 per month with many options to choose from to fit your budget. All classes are included with every membership so stop by and meet the incred-ibly friendly staff to discuss which plan is best for you. This is no corporate machine. This is your new, neighborhood gym in the South Bay!

ABOUT CALAVERAInspired by surfi ng, created by an international entrepreneur, and tested in paradise, Calavera is swimwear with looks worthy of a Bond girl and performance befi tting a champion. Founded in 2010 by banker-turned-swimwear designer Anna Jerstrom, Calavera is a technically driven, stylish triumph. Built for riding Kauai’s curls, beachside yoga in Bali, sunning in Santorini and everything in between, these bathing suits don’t budge.

Drawn from her own experience circling the globe in search of perfect surf, Jerstrom quickly identifi ed what the bikini lacked and subsequently created Calavera to alleviate those problem areas with technical developments and superior, under-the-hood construction. The result: a functional, confi dent swimsuit experi-ence that’s as eye-catching on the outside — and intelligently structured on the inside — as the Calavera woman herself.

INNER BEAUTYCalavera’s beauty is more than skin-deep. Jerstrom’s innova-tions include a bevy of inventive solutions that make the suits tug-free. The result is a performance garment that not only looks incredible, it allows you to rip when you’re charging a wave.

Tops:

Unique construction takes internally reinforced nylon string (to reduce stretching) and secures it both across the back and around the trunk, thereby decreasing the strain on traditional pressure points.

For amazing support the underbust band is lined with snug elastic

Rubber elastic-rimmed cups grip for maximum stability.

Cups are affi xed to the band to stop distracting side movement.

Bottoms:

Wardrobe malfunctions are banished with Velcro straps for a secure fi t.

PVC tabs minimize fabric stretching to stay put, no mat-ter how big the wave is.

Eyelit-shoelace attachments on the side equal easy adjustments.

Stabilizing material fused to the inside of the bikini means you can pull tight without wearing it out.

Rubber elastic lining wraps and holds.

BOARD TESTEDEvery one of Calavera’s designs is fi eld tested in the waters off Costa Rica, where the Calavera Surf Team put them through their paces. Comprised of top female water sports athletes from around the world — including 2011 Flowboarding World Cham-pion Amy Luis and Costa Rica’s #1 ranked female rider, Jordan Hundley — the talented, beautiful young women who make up the “Calavera girls” prove that when your swimsuit performs fl awlessly, so can you.

Like the women who wear them, Calavera swimwear represents strength, smarts, and fearless femininity. Calavera continues to refi ne this mission, introducing new designs and technical advancements to its growing line of beach lifestyle products. Thanks to Calavera, women no longer have to choose between looking great on the beach and performing well in the water.

Below are the instructions for one of Chef Matt’s favorite simple salads to prepare. We’ll let him describe the inspiration behind it.

SWOO

32 SWOOPMAGAZINE.COM

Chef Matt McMahon has been cooking up tasty dishes of gourmet wonder for people all over the South Bay for a long time now. If you haven’t been lucky enough to attend one of the many parties he’s catered, then you’ve been severely missing out on one of the finest taste bud shattering culinary experiences this area has to offer. But maybe you already have encountered one of his creations and you just don’t know it. One aspect of being an exceptionally talented Chef in the catering business is the day to day anonymity of the ex-perience. There’s no glass window showcasing Chef Matt in action at these events, nor is there always a menu highlighting his name. But while working to ensure that hundreds of identical plates of gourmet dishes simultaneously live up to his high standards of quality and freshness, Chef Matt remains solitarily behind the scenes guaranteeing the party’s guests have something exciting to talk about.

Now that he’s mastered feeding hundreds of people at a time, Chef Matt is ready to share his culinary techniques to the masses by teaching us how to maintain our healthy lifestyles, one salad at a time. MyDailySalad.com is the name of his newest endeavor. Featuring one recipe for a different filling, nourishing, and colorful salad almost every single day, this soon to be complete website shows us that salads don’t have to be just iceberg and store-bought ranch dressing thrown onto a plate, but rather a veritable palette of colors, flavors, and unlimited options you can include in your everyday diet.

Looking under the website’s tab titled “technique”, Chef Matt clearly and concisely takes us through the basics of flavor pairings, aromatics, vegetable roasting, and vinaigrette preparation. The word emulsion quickly changes from an intimidating culinary term to easy enough of a technique for anyone to use in their everyday cooking repertoire.

When you click back to the front page and see the featured salad popping out before you, it’s easy to forget that it’s a dish that Chef Matt recently prepared and ate for himself, and that you too can do so just as quickly and easily.

Keeping with the limitless freedom for creativity salads can offer us theme, Chef Matt hates recipes. He believes that since we all have different palates, why should anyone tell us how much of an ingredient to use?

“You can only discover your palate and the joys of cooking through your own trial and error.” Says Chef Matt. “Listen to your inner chef and let your palate be your guide.”

His instructions are presented in an unconventional manner. They’re more like helpful rough guidelines. Rather than using a conventional recipe with amounts for each ingredient, Chef Matt prefers to simply “give you the tools and knowledge so you can use your own judgement on how much of an ingredient to add.” Each dish includes a photo and list of ingredients, along with only as many instructions as necessary. This format truly allows for freedom to explore our individual tastes and imaginations, letting flavors come to us instinctively. With MyDailySalad.com, that free-dom makes cooking fun all over again, reminding us that it should never be a dull, menial task.

This almost zen like approach to cooking is inspirational. MyDai-lySalad.com teaches us that everyone is a chef at heart because everyone wants to eat good food. It’s a shame that we live in a society that thinks “fast food” is always quicker than creating something healthy to eat for yourself on your own, and that we have to let restaurants come up with the same flavor combinations presented in different ways for us repeatedly through ad cam-paigns rather than taste buds. I sincerely hope that MyDailySalad.com gains a large following, because it has the potential to show huge amounts of people that great health is more attainable than we think it is. Watermelon, Tomato, and Arugula Salad with Ginger Citrus Dressing

This is a great salad recipe just in time for summer. All these ingredients are available now and will reach their peak in July and August. The dressing accentu-ates the natural flavors of the ingredients while at their finest. I recommend going to the farmer’s market and buying fresh arugula to get the extra peppery bitter taste (that’s why I don’t season the dressing with pepper, but you certainly can), a super sweet watermelon, and nice acidic heirloom tomato; and don’t forget the fresh basil. Always chiffonade (go to my technique section on mydailysalad.com) your basil right before you toss the salad. You can’t get a better taste of summer in your mouth than this.

IngredientsRaw Walnuts, roasted and choppedWatermelon, dicedTomato, dicedBasil, chiffonadeArugula

Toss with dressing, plate and garnish with balls of goat cheese. I think Cypress Grove’s Purple Haze is a great go-to goat here.

DressingFresh Ginger, 5 passes on a microplane to yield about 1/4 of a t, or tt1 Orange, zested with 3 passes of a microplane & juiced, or tt1 Lime, zested with 2 passes of the microplane or tt for more acidity & juicedtt Agave Nectartt Champagne Vinegar (Various types of balsamics are also great tryhere too; I have a tangerine one I like to use for this salad)tt SaltWhisk in at least = parts EVOO to your base. Use more oil for a creamier dressing.

MSWOOP LIFESTYLE //// LA BEERFEST

SWOOPMAGAZINE.COM

Walking into the Paramount Studios Lot on this unexpectedly hot day, I was craving a nice, cold, refreshing beer. Luckily, that day was the LA Beerfest and there would be 75+ breweries there with cold beers for me to choose from. As the sun beat down on the crowd of beer hungry attendees, we counted down the minutes until the gates would be open and our mini mugs would be full. People who had obviously done this before had the awesome idea of wearing pretzel necklaces to combat the alcoholic impact that was soon upon us. Mental note taken for next time.

The ropes dropped and the crowd herded toward the hundreds of IPAs, hefeweizens, lagers and ales. Our group headed to the back of the lot where we got our first beer amongst the neighborhood sets of Manhattan and Brooklyn, an exciting part of the experience for me, as New York has a big place in my heart. After having a familiar and tasty Hoegaarden, I spotted the Black Market Brewery booth, who also makes one of the favorite hefeweizens. The Black Market Hef has a bright citrusy taste that was perfectly refreshing. We followed that up with some great German beer from Wertshaus German Restaurant - even more fun because it was served with free pretzels and by girls and guys dressed in lederhosen. After a brief tour around the NYC set and several mini beers later, we spotted an inside booth that could give us relief from the sun for a few minutes. 30 minutes later we were still inside, as the combination of Blue Moon beer and Howl at The Moon dueling piano players were

keeping us quite entertained. From Billy Joel to Lady Gaga, these guys were the most fun entertainment at the ‘fest, keeping the music coming and picking songs where we could all sing along, tone deaf or not.

Singing as we left to get some grub- “Sweet Caroline, Ba, Ba, Ba!!!!!” - we walked back to the front of the lot that housed about 10 gourmet food trucks. After taking a little tour of the options, we decided on The Grilled Cheese Truck and ordered a decadent sounding Spicy Pork Grilled Cheese. While it took about 15 minutes to get the sandwich, the zesty goodness was exactly what we needed to get through the rest of the day. It looked like many of the other trucks were making phenomenal food, which is thrilling to me as they are mobile and being made in a 5x5 space. Impressive to say the least.

The day was full of new beers that I am hoping to see in my local bars; Hanger 24’s Orange Wheat, Deschutes Pale Ale, The Fireman’s Brew - hopefully including some of the cute firefighters who served it - and The Strand Brewing Co.’s 24th Street Pale Ale. I will for sure be going again next year to try some new beer and food truck contenders and recom-mend that you do as well. I will show up with pretzel necklace in tow and having checked the weather so I know to wear less clothing than this year; bits of advice that only seasoned Beerfest-ers would know, and now you can show up next year like a veteran too!

Having tried MB Post for dinner and been pretty impressed, I already had high expectations for their brunch menu. And it delivered! The deliciously sweet

Sticky Bun was our appetizer as well as a Bloody Mary called ‘Coughlin’s Law’ for my guest. Her expression upon the first sip explained how much she enjoyed the interesting twist to the classic brunch cocktail. A fresh Citrus Salad and the breakfast Chimichanga were unique and full of interesting flavors that made our tummies full and happy.

In my mind, the true highlight of the meal was the Benedict with a homemade bacon cheddar biscuit, arugula, procuitto, and a delicious hollandaise. Each ingredient was a burst of flavor in the mouth that prevented us from talking or breathing between each bite. Let’s just say we left satisfied. H.M

When I think of “Best view” in the city, the first place that comes to mind is Moonshadows. Sitting on the edge of famed Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, this

spot offers not only a incredible ambiance, but allows you to momentarily escape from the world. A well-known spot for celebrity sightings and funky lounge music, it is frequented by both tourists and locals who come to find relaxation and an array of perfectly prepared specialties. Paired with the Pinot Blanco, an excellent recommendation by owner Andrea Bullo, my colleague and I started with the oysters, followed by the grilled albacore tuna steak for our main entree. Needless to say, we were impressed. “The concept behind the restaurant emulates that of St. Tropez,” says Andrea. With the mist from the sea and the almost perfect temperature, I must say I felt like I had gone on vacation, even if it was just for an hour. K.C

Coming to you from the owners of Baja Sharkeez is this new Mexican spot with all the makings to be a hit. Sharkeez may bring to mind guys in board shorts

and debaucherous nights full of shots - but rest assured, this is a much more chic and and upscale restaurant with a top chef and homemade ingredients. While they have enough tequila in-house to make the previous statement apply, the atmosphere is much more trendy and looks like a “contemporary hacienda.” You‘re greeted by friendly and attractive staff and warm, fresh made tortillas with honey butter. Sipping the Fresh Spicy Mango Margarita started the meal off right; it was very easy to sip down fast. The Ceviche Tres Maneras was our choice of appetizer and it melted in our mouths, as well as the Cilantro Lime Carne Asada fajitas that were filled with tender and juicy meat. Deciding to splurge, we went with the recommendation of getting the Churros for dessert that came with chocolate and caramel dipping sauces. We left satisfied and stuffed. Make a reservation today, you won’t be able to get in without it. H.M

Everyone was anticipating the opening of The Strand House and it did not disappoint. Overlooking the water in Manhattan Beach

and being a Zislis restaurant, it was bound to be a success. With an open floor plan for dining and what is called the “strand bar” positioned below it, this spot has something for everyone in town. Every dish is impeccably prepared and each wine pairing is directly on point. Our evening began with the Farro Salad served alongside the Saint M Riesling from Germany. As french fry connoisseurs we requested a side of their hand cut fries as well, which are arguably the best in Los Angeles. The main entrees, which we all decided to share, consisted of the Sautéed Day Boat Scallops with a Raisin Caper Emulsion, the Grilled Rack of Australian Lamb and one of my personal favorites the Spicy Rock Shrimp Pizza. A vanilla bean, blueberry glaze and caramel doughnut with the Summerland Rosé brought our evening to a close. We all knew this is where we would be planning our next night out. K.C

Gourmet food trucks have taken the foodie world by storm and The Lime Truck delivered one of the best lunches I’ve had in years... the fact that it came from a

truck is a moot point. In addition to the friendly chef and staff, there were numerous highlights within the dishes we were presented with. The Carnitas Fries was a dish I wouldn’t mind stuffing my face with daily, as well as the Sweet and Spicy Hanger Steak Tacos. Another favorite was the Blue Crab and Scallop Ceviche; fresh and citrusy goodness in every bite.

These dishes may seem Mexican inspired, but actually have a surprising Asian influence. But the self proclaimed “New California” mobile cuisine coming from The Lime Truck is more than worth tracking down. We shouldn’t forget to mention that all of their ingredients are local, organic and sustainably sourced fresh. Find their day-to-day locations on the website or book them for your next event. You won’t be disappointed. H.M

There are countless great restaurants in Southern California. Especially trendy restaurants. But what sets them apart? We took it upon ourselves to investigate just that. We searched within the new, the unknown, and even the places that were already well known. After an extensive search, the places we found rocked our world in the way that one aspect of the dining experience was particularly spectacular,

and that’s why they were chosen as the best. Not to say that the food at every place did not exceed my expectations. We were showered with food with such inspiration and culinary surprises at every single one of these restaurants. And I promise, none of them paid me to say this. Ok, the free drinks might have helped a little. H.M

This Sunday Supper is probably one of the coolest finds I’ve come across. Not only is it only 15 dollars for a lovely off menu three course meal that changes

weekly, the food is excellent and the atmosphere adds to the experience. Dominick’s has this old fashioned feel when you walk in; old pictures covering the wall, tiled floors, low lighting and candles. Then, walking to the back, there is a big enclosed patio with leafy vines covering the wall and a cozy fireplace that completes the warm feeling. They also offer 12 dollar bottles of house red and white wine… what a deal! We made the choice to also order one of the famous homemade pasta dishes - the spaghetti and meatballs - because our selected entrée for the night was steak. Both yummy dishes, but the pasta was the highlight. Deee-licious! This place was lively, welcoming, and the food was classic and well prepared. This should be your Sunday night staple, no matter where you live. H.M

Primitivo is located in the heart of Venice Beach on the notoriously chic Abbott Kinney. Being a premier destination for tapas and wine, we discovered its quaint

outdoor seating area set at just the right temperature, side-stepping the problem I typically encounter when choosing to sit to outside. Acting as a roof, there’s ivy intertwining with tiny glistening lights, making it hard to remember you’re sitting in Venice Beach and not somewhere in Western Europe. From the Bacon Wrapped Medjool Dates to the perfectly cooked Harissa Lamb Chops, this is not just a spot with an outstanding ambiance, but also a place with amazing sustenance. K.C

These “sloppy good” burgers lived up to the hype and helped me decide where I would be eating whenever hitting the popular

shopping center in LA. Situated on the outskirts of the Farmers Market at The Grove, this burger joint does not house your every day burger. Nancy Silverton of Pizzeria Mozza creates her own dry-aged beef blend for juicy perfection. Some of the stand outs are Nancy’s Backyard Burger, the Lamb Burger, and the Short Order Spuds with Truffle Aioli. Nancy herself graced us with her presence mid meal, which added some LA celebrity appeal to the pleasant modern farmhouse feel of the restaurant. All of the ingredients are homemade, organic and locally grown, making each meal a fresh and fully original experience. Finishing off the meal with an alcoholic milkshake called The Charlie Brown and checking out the sister bakery, Short Cake, I drove home feeling stuffed and happy as ever. Now we just have to convince them to open one around the corner from my house. H.M

Hudson House is a random little gem off PCH where you would never expect to find this trendy little gastropub. I had originally heard about their Happy Hour and thought

I would check out their deals, but in arriving, I saw that they have over 50 beers to choose from - forget the Happy Hour! I would always choose a great beer over a good deal. While they had a limited selection of things for HH, we opted for beers, burgers, and some other very tasty dishes. The Pretzel Burger is a well known dish here; some other stand-outs were the Brown Sugar Ribs that fell off the bone and the Slow Roasted Plum Tomatoes & Burrata. The Toasted Edamame & Shishito Peppers was also an amazing dish, included in the Happy Hour selections. My advice is come here for beer, during Happy Hour or not, and come hungry. H.M

Just off Catalina St. in the heart of the South Bay lies Chez Melange, better known as the “best kept secret” in Redondo Beach. A restaurant with an interesting

concept: three different culinary experiences all under one roof. Upon your entrance you step into what is called the Bouzy Gastropub, where pulled pork sandwiches and the renowned Pancho, also known as the “Knife & Fork” burger, reign as the must have entrees. In the main dining room you’re welcomed with a more sophisticated menu consisting of Eggplant Pasta and flawlessly sautéed veal tenderloin. To your right is BarComida, the newest edition to the restaurant. Inside the bar you can choose from a variety of cocktails prepared by resident mixologist Jesse Kogan. The menu changes daily and dishes are prepared by Chef Diane right in front of your eyes! With three spots in one, there is always something new to check out at Chez Melange. K.C

Chicken Maisón Healthy Mediterranean Restaurant lives up to its name by serving the healthiest and most delicious Mediterranean food in the South Bay. It’s the perfect place for everyone wanting to eat extremely fresh and well prepared meals that are good for their bodies, watches, and wallets all at the same time. Whether you’re a busy professional catching a quick bite, parent trying to quickly feed your kids, a health conscious individual, or a party planner, you will never have to sacrifice quality for a reasonably priced meal at Chicken Maisón. The family owned and operated restaurant always lives up to high standards at each one of their locations in Torrance, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Gardena, and Santa Ana.

When founder Mario Karame opened their first location in Torrance seven years ago, he wanted his customers to share his family’s love for delicious homemade food and to savor the real flavors of the entire Mediterranean coast with Greek, Lebanese, French, and Ital-ian influences. Yet with his expertise in creating all of these wonder-ful tastes, healthy California cuisine was his inspiration to combine them all, and create distinctive, skillfully prepared food with a focus on Mediterranean style.

Since 2005, Mario and sons Sam, Ramsey, Tarek and Omar have only used all natural, fresh ingredients in everything they make. Their chicken is naturally fed, and the vegetables are always purchased locally. They boil 100 pounds of garbanzo beans every single day to combine with fresh squeezed lemon juice, garlic, and extra virgin olive oil creating the tastiest hummus around. There is not a single freezer or a microwave in any of Chicken Maisón’s five locations. Every dish is prepared fresh using recipes created by Mario Karame himself.

The first time I visited Chicken Maisón, I was amazed by every aspect of my experience. I was greeted with smiles from uniformed staff members who were polite, competent, and provided proficient service. They were able to describe items, assist in menu selec-tions, and graciously made requested adjustments to menu items.

I was impressed with the restaurant facilities, pleasant décor, and family feeling. They even knew by name the many customers who eat there every day, using Chicken Maisón’s menu to help them lose weight and improve their health.

When my food arrived, it was so colorful and visually appetizing; it reminded me that we really “start eating with our eyes.” Then when I bit into the Spicy-Lemon Garlic Chicken I discovered the juiciest, most flavorful chicken I have ever tasted. Their garlic sauce, made with potatoes instead of sour cream, was delicious on their fresh pita bread. The fresh hummus was light and tasty; and the falafel was soft on the inside and crispy on the outside - exactly like they are supposed to be! Their specialty mint iced tea is so refreshing it helps you make room for Mario’s fabulous baklava. Chicken Maisón’s portions are so large, that I have a hard time finishing all the food. Since I didn’t want to waste a single bite, I ate enough food to last me the entire day. However, I did not get that greasy or sluggish feeling I often get after eating at other places.

My meal did exactly what Mario Karame envisioned when he started Chicken Maisón - it gave my heart what it deserved. So give your heart what it deserves – and your palate, body, watch, and wallet too – by treating yourself to a fresh, healthy, delicious, and distinctive meal at any of the five Chicken Maisón Healthy Mediterranean Restaurants in the South Bay.

“After all, how could you capture someone’s true beauty without truly getting to know them? ”

Jejuan Guillory is an Emmy Award winning producer originally from Galveston, Texas. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, a friend encouraged him to try out as a stunt

double for the show Friday Night Lights. While they ended up casting a different person for the roll, he was asked to stay on the show and work for the extras casting department. As the show progressed so did Jejuan’s involvement, and he began taking on several roles including filling in as an extra, playing a few minor characters, and working as an office PA. His hard work paid off as he was hired to be the assistant to Peter Berg, the show’s creator and Executive Producer. In between seasons of Friday Night Lights, Jejuan worked on a plethora of other shows such as Next on MTV, The Bachelor on ABC, America’s Next Top Model on the CW, and My Antonio on VH1, to name a select few. He eventually landed a job as producer for the show Christina’s Court, and won television’s highest honor, the Emmy in both 2009 and 2010 for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program. Jejuan currently works at Entertainment Studios, one of the largest production and distribution companies in L.A. On top of all that, Jejuan is a partner at GBC management and is currently managing SWOOP girl and USA Volleyball player Morgan Beck.

influences drawing from the likes of Deadmou5, Afrojack, and Kaskade to name a few, Tofu Robots takes the genre a step farther by combining

their individual talents to create a sound that resonates more like a band than a traditional DJ group. Ali states, “It has gotten to the point

where electronic music can now truly be performed live and I don’t mean pressing a play button on a turntable. We actually use a MIDI

guitar and vocalists on stage. These elements along with our music controller, Novation Twitch, require each person to be in sync with each

other so we consider ourselves a band.” Be sure to give Tofu Robots a like on Facebook, and stay current on all of their newest music, which

is updated regularly at http://soundcloud.com/tofurobots/. As for gigs, you can catch them every third Thursday of the month at Coda Bar &

Lounge in Sherman Oaks.

Manny Lizaso is a Deep/Techno House DJ who currently resides right here at the SWOOP factory in El Segundo, California. While living in Chicago as a youngster, Manny got deeply into

the “Chicago House” sounds of Bad Boy Bill, B96, and WNUR Street Beat Radio. With these influences heavily inspiring him, Manny began

to DJ about eleven years ago and made his way out to the West Coast. He explains, “After living in K-town and Downtown [Los Angeles] for

almost 10 years and Venice for 2, I found a nice cozy warehouse space (AKA the Swoop factory) to be a part of in El Segundo. Love it here,

and I get to play my Mackie stacks as loud as I want - whenever I want. The Factory makes an after hours sweet spot and I love the 10 minute

downhill bike ride to the water as an added bonus.” This summer you can catch Manny playing at Abigaile in Hermosa Beach, The Side

Door in Manhattan Beach, various underground parties, and also at the Playa Surfers Camp at Burning Man 2012. When asked about his

music Manny states, “I just want to give some like minded and new ears an outlet to this great genre of Deep/Tech House. It just doesn’t

exist here in the South Bay at the moment and I really wanna to focus on getting it exposed.” Be sure to check out all of Manny’s newest

music at www.soundcloud.com/mannylizaso.
