Rising star left paralysed after knife attack - Shocking Photo Released Family of Oliver Hem-sley; former Hills road sixth form college stu-dent, have published photos of when he was brutally attacked. The attack occurred last August when ‘Olibop’ was walking with his flatmate in Shoreditch, he was stabbed 8 times by a gang of youths, and slumped on the ground with blood pouring from him. The stab wounds where mainly to his lungs and heart but when he was rushed to hospital by the air ambulance it was found that he had also been knifed in the neck. This led to an infec-tion of the spinal cord which later spread to his brain. Oliver, now 21 went into a coma following his injuries,

Will , and a group of his friends, have already raised £12,000 for Spinal –cord charities . And they are hoping to raise much more closer to the time. One of Oliver’s attack-ers, 16 appeared at the Crown Court today, he has pleaded guilty of causing grievous bodily harm; hav-ing an offensive weapon and he has also two other charges from the youth court of robbery and com-mon assault. Oliver’s family has de-cided to publish the photo of Oli in hospital on life sup-port. They hope that the photo will scare people into sense and reduce knife crime. To support Will on his bike ride take a look at: www.ride2recovery.co.uk By Katie France

doctors feared he would suffer brain damage. But, since he has regained consciousness, again he has come off of the ventila-tor ( in January), and al-though he is paralysed from his neck down doctors say he has made an miraculous recovery. Oliver's brother ‘Will’, said he looked like a ‘watering can’ because of the blood. Will has organ-ised a charity bike ride from London to the French Alps to raise money for spinal injuries. This 600 mile bike ride ‘Ride2Recovery’ will take place in May over a six day period and is aimed to raise awareness about knife crime. The fundraising team said, “ Knife crime is not confined to gang culture and there are many inno-cent victims each year”

Infamous Michael Jack-son has recently an-nounced his last tour in the O2 arena, the so-called undisputed king of pop is selling 657 tickets a minute, that’s 11 a second! He’s sold 750,000 so far and counting; ticket master has sold out but come remain at the Viagogo website. We wonder if he’s fit enough to perform at the O2 for such a long time, and if his health is going to get in the way. In his short press confer-ence he told his fans this was his last tour in London, and that was just about all he said really, 4 minutes on stage and about 50 spoken words then he was off again. The reason I think it was so crowded is because there was an X-factor show shortly after the conference, and people just wanted a picture of him. Bog-standard tickets can cost up to £300, VIP tickets can go for £1,500. Some people have been buying tickets then selling them on eBay for over £3000, Who can afford to pay that much? How much would you pay?

I don't believe anyone can want to pay that much money to see the undisputed (now disputed) so called king of pop lip-sing his old classics on stage. I also don't think he’s fit enough to keep up with his old thriller routine for over his 50 shows he’s promised to do in the O2 arena. His fans will be expecting the young Michael Jackson, but we must remember he is 50 years old, and not what he used to be. I think fans are to expect a slower, older and less enter-taining Jackson. There have also been some ru-mours about his money prob-lems, with an “amicable settle-ment” with the King of Bahrain’s son, who is suing him for £4.7 million. also regarding his “neverland” ranch which was about to be auctioned off if he failed to pay £12.5 million. In short, hes broke, and needs some money, and this tour was the easiest way for the pop-star to get money.

I would go to the concert just to see how he does, and how he copes, I’m intrigued by how long he will last on tour..

Tougher standards at Cambridge University for A level students

Cambridge University has decided to raise its standards for applying for the second best uni-versity in the world. Cambridge University has opened many oppor-tunities to young stu-dents for 800 years. Is it really a good idea to put more pressure on hopefuls who are so des-perate to get into the amazing universities in Cambridge? Cambridge University is ex-pecting applicants to have at least one A* grade and two A grades in a bid to sift out the best students, the “crème de la crème”. The new A* grade is due to be awarded for the first time in 2010.

It is expecting to have the top students in their universities. The university is claiming that it receives so many applica-tions with high grades that in 2007 it sent 5,500 letters home revealing the bad news that applicants weren’t good enough to get a place at the prestigious university. The university wants to prevent this situation from happening again.

But this shouldn’t be an ex-cuse. Most people want to do their best but now the university is saying that students have to try much harder. But surely working harder than your best will cause as much heartache as finding out that you’re not good enough to get into the univer-sities? The positive side to this is that it keeps the university’s reputation. The university just wants to raise the standards a little bit more and to show that it is the best university in Britain and after so many years, it has decided that it’s time for a change.

Local firm wins £8 million school build contract - and promises 50 new jobs A new and improved school is to be built in Cambridge-creating around 50 new jobs. Sawston-based construction company Morgan Ashurst has won an £8m contract to build the new Shirley School in Nuffield Road. This will result in the firm em-ploying about 50 people in-cluding plumbers and roofers, The business likes to offer work locally where possible.

The project will be completed in two phases. It includes out-door classrooms so pupils can be taught in the fresh air in good weather. It is due to be completed by March 2011. Ashurst area manager Bob Ensch said “Despite the eco-nomic downturn, Morgan Ashurst is very busy in the area, thanks to our experi-ence of delivering public sec-tor buildings.” Shirley School, Cambridge

Two of the girls said that boys distracted them and that “boys do ruin your chances to do your best.” One also said that ”girls are just as bad as boys.” One of the girls said, “my best friends are boys. I could-n’t live without boys.” Does this show that we would do better academically without boys as they can be so an-noying and distracting or is there no need for all of this fuss as both sexes can be just as bad as each other

From a boy’s point of view, it is a similar response. He said he was friends with boys and girls but he wouldn’t know what it’s like to go to a single sex school. But he thinks that some boys do better than girls but it can also be the other way around. So the question is, is it good to go to a mixed school or a single sex school? Just be-cause the academic results show that girls do better with-out boys doesn’t mean that we can be best friends with them without achieving the best results. In conclusion, going to a single sex school would be ”strange and bor-ing.”

A recent study has shown that girls do better academically without be-ing at a school with boys. Statistics showed that more than 700,000 girls taught in girls’ schools made more progress without boys. The research conducted on behalf of the Good Schools’ Guide looked at GCSE results of girls in single sexed schools. Of the 71,286 girls who sat GCSEs in single sexed schools, on average all did better than predicted from their results from their primary SATS. This compared to mixed sex schools where 20% of the 647,942 people who took exams did worse than expected. Janette Wallis, editor of the Good Schools Guide said:”A lot of parents will look at the benefits of co-ed schools, like the fact that girls and boys are educated side -by -side preparing them for the world of work and life. But to disregard this evidence would be a mistake. We never ex-pected to see such a differ-ence.”

Girls at single sex schools do better in their GCSE exams says research

“ I couldn’t live with-out boys.”

Alice Sullivan, a specialist in sin-gle-sex schooling and a re-searcher at the Institute of Edu-cation, University of London, said the fact that girls did better at single-sex schools supported a “body of evidence.” However, another leading aca-demic, Alan Smithers from Buckingham University said that factors such as social back-grounds, teaching and a pupil’s personality were more important in exam success. A reporter surveyed boys and girls at Bottisham Village on their views on this debatable topic. The reporter asked if girls and boys would be prefer to go to a single sex school. Out of the five girls and one boy questioned, everyone said “no”. This shows that girls do get on with boys, but there are boys that can distract girls who try to work to their best ability. .

Richardson, 45, was not wearing a ski helmet when she was taking a private ski lesson on the Nansen, a beginners' run at Mont Tremblant. Now she is in a very fatal state. Richardson, wife of actor Liam Neeson and daughter of actress Vanessa Redgrave, was at the bottom of the run, in what is known as the flats, during the mid-afternoon lesson when she fell and tumbled down the hill. She did not hit anyone or anything before coming to a stop. The ski instructor was by her side within seconds. Fortunately There was no external sign of

injury, no cuts or bleeding. Two ski patrollers assisted Richardson but she was not put on a stretcher. Richardson walked to her room at the resort's Quin-tessence Hotel, where she had been staying since Sunday. The patrollers stayed with her for an hour. She started having head-aches and she was transported to the Centre Hospitalier Laurentien. But that doesn’t end the story, she obviously had a more serious problem than she thought. She has been flown back to NY. She has been reported brain dead but has not yet passed away.

I’m sure lots of you saw Brit-ain's got talent last year, but Faryl Smith seemed to dis-appear from the public eye. It took her till now to record her album ‘Faryl’, but it’s worth it. Her debut album has just been released and is already enjoy-ing rapid sales. 13 year old Faryl from Northants, Kettering has a voice that even left Simon Cowell speechless. She performed The National Anthem in front of 82,000 Eng-land rugby fans and Millions of TV viewers. Her only accompa-niment was the English Rugby team. Added to all that she later found out that her album had shot to number 6 in the charts. Faryl was first inspired to be a singer when she was just 7, she did a solo in a school play and it went down well.

As you probably know, Sir Alan has eight new female and seven new male apprentices battling it out for Red Nose Day (and the six figure salary!). These are including a former football player, Tanzanian beauty queen and a single mother of two. But yet there are only fifteen remaining contestants. But why are there only seven male apprentices?

Sir Alan, as blunt as ever, summed up the mystery , saying that the eighth male apprentice “Bottled it”. Speaking to reporters Sir Alan said the contestant had been hit by the reality of the

He said: “It was just that he got himself into his hotel room that night and realised that 'this is it, I'm away for up to 12 weeks from my family and my kids,' and I think the reality hit home”. Sir Alan said, “It will make my job easier.” To follow the fortunes of the remaining contestants tune into BBC 1 at 9pm. Our Nation’s News: During the 3 years till March 2008 , 400 people died unneces-sarily at a Staffordshire hospital due to atrocious care for patients in A&E. The healthcare commission report said that the managers of Mid Staf-fordshire NHS foundation trust were so fixated on ruthlessly meeting tar-gets that they did not even try to cor-rect the horrendous mistakes occur-ring in the A&E department. The report found that patients arriv-ing in A&E were assessed by un-trained receptionists ,a patient with an open fracture covered in blood had to wait more than 4 hours for treatment with out pain medication. The report also concluded that junior doctors were badly supervised lead-ing to mistakes and to few consult-ants were on call. In 2006 –07 the trust set it self a tar-get :Saving £10 million . To achieve this, over 150 jobs were cut including the nurses. The trust had already got relatively low levels of staff. A year after this the commission found that the entire hospital needed another 120 nurses, 77 for the medical wards. Delays in operations were common they could be cancelled for up to 4 days in a row.

The report revealed that there was something lacking at every stage of emergency care and blamed ‘poor ,abysmal management’ for the bad conditions and many deaths. The HC’s report also illuminated the lack of training in the emergency assessment units where nurses turned off cardiac monitors as they were unable to read them, patients did not get the right medication and call buttons often went un-answered leaving patients in soiled sheets or in copious amounts of pain with no relief. A memorial Gallery ,Stafford Hospital patients. Both the Chief executive and the chair of the trust have stepped down in recognition of the commissions findings. The department of health launched 2 further investigations last night into both the A&E ser-vice presently and the standards of care and treatment at the hospice during the 5 years before the commission began its illuminating investigation. Five people have been charged after distur-bances in the Holyland student area of south Belfast…...

The trouble started on Tuesday af-ternoon when police moved in to clear people who had gathered on a street during St Patrick's Day cele-brations. Superintendent Chris Noble they took action when they came under attack. "The response was proportionate, it was fair and residents were compli-mentary," he said. Nineteen arrests were made, and eight people subse-quently released. Noble said those detained were "idiots". "The initial indications are that a lot of the individuals had consumed a significant amount of alcohol in a limited period of time," he said. Noble said not all those arrested were students, however south Bel-fast MP Alasdair McDonnell said the universities had to act against those who did get into trouble. "The two universities and Belfast Metropolitan College must take a

very harsh line with people who be-have like this," he said. "They have absolutely no right to behave like this. The way they treat the local people, the way they treat the people who try to live side-by-side with them is outrageous and cannot, and will not, be tolerated." Student residents insisted that a small minority were involved in the violence. Both universities were part of the trouble. the University of Ulsters, Alistair Adair, said he was "appalled by the mayhem and disor-der". "This was alcohol-fuelled, by and large," he said. "It may be that we have to take measures such as alcohol disorder zones as they have in England, where on certain days at certain times alcohol is prohibited." Vice-Chancellor of Queens Univer-sity, Gerry McCormac, said al-though no student had yet been ex-

pelled for bad behaviour, it re-mained an option open to the uni-versity. "There've been 200 students disci-plined this year. One hundred and fifty of those have been warned, 50 fined severely," he said. "We have expulsion on our books as an option, we go through a discipli-nary process and if expulsion is the punishment that's required for a cer-tain behaviour, we won't hesitate from using that. Most of these quotes were because of students from the schools being involved in the violence and some of them be-ing arrested. The Police will now take further action on those students and adults arrested in the outbreak. Connor Burr BVC News…...

DIDDY DINOSAUR

DISCOVERED! The smallest meat-eating dinosaur to ever be found in North-America has been iden-tified as a hesperony-chus. It was identified from 6 tiny pelvic bones. The tiny dino was mis-identified as a lizard for 25 years. This dinosaur was the size of a small chicken, (which is a lot smaller than the famous T-rex!) Experts say that it used its rows of serrated teeth to feed on insects. This helped scientists to con-firm that it was in fact not mammals that filled the roles of small preda-tors during the dinosaur age but these dinky di-nosaurs and other spe-cies like them. The mini dinosaur is closely related to a tiny feathered dinosaur dis-covered in China called a microtaptor and be-longs to a group called the therepods which were reptiles that even-tually evolved into birds! How-ever, de-spite the discovery of very well preserved skeletons of creatures

like these in Asia, this type of specimen is very rare in North America. Palaeontologist Dr Phil-lip Curie has been pon-dering why so few small bones have been found in Alberta, Canada - one of the world’s richest sites for large dinosaur bones. Now it is sus-pected that small dino-saurs didn’t survive well due to the larger preda-tors. The dinosaur pelvis came from an animal weighing no more than 1.9 kg (4.2 lb) which is about the same as a small cat. This discovery is said to also help the debate of whether flight originated from land animals flap-ping their arms or tree climbing animals gliding downwards (or falling out of the tree!). Because of the position-ing of the bones scien-tists know that this dino-saur was a tree climbing creature and it was likely that it used the long feathers on its limbs to glide or parachute from tree to tree.

USB FINGER STICK!

A computer programmer from Finland has made a prosthetic ‘USB finger stick’ after doctors treat-ing him jokily suggested the idea after finding out what he did for a living! Jerry Jalava lost his right ring finger after crashing into a deer while on his motorbike near Hel-sinki last summer. Now he has a 2GB USB stick in place of his missing digit which he uses to store photos, music and movies. Luckily, the finger is not permanently at-

tached to his hand so he doesn't have to sit with his finger permanently placed in a USB port! Mr Jalava is already think-ing about upgrading the finger. “ I’m planning to use another prosthetic as a shell for the next version which will have a remov-able finger tip!”

MAN STOPPED FOR LAUGHING A motorist said that he was stopped by police for laughing at a joke with a friend on a hands-free mobile phone.

When Gary Sanders, 47, a companies director for Spontex Workwear, got out of his car he said that a police officer told him he was not showing enough care and atten-tion to driving. He was sure it couldn’t be an of-fence, although soon found out it was when he was questioned at a po-

lice station for half an hour.

However, a spokesman for the police said it was “laughable” an officer would stop a driver for laughing and insisted Mr Sanders was stopped due to his speed exceeding the 30mph limit in the Queen-sway Tunnel in Mersey-side and for tailgating.

The Hampshire village of Linkenholt is going on sale for £25million next week. The village is said to be a good investment as it in-cludes 22 cottages, 1,500 acres of farmland, 450 acres of woodland, a vil-lage shop, a blacksmiths, a cricket ground and a large manor house! The only thing not included in the

sale is the 12th century church. While some people think this is exciting some resi-dents don’t fancy the idea. Resident Elsie Smith,75 who was born in the village, described the move as “sad”. “It is quite sad that the village is up for sale,” she said. Mrs Smith lives only yards away from her birth place and she met her husband in the village as well. The village goes on sale next week with a starting price of £25million.

Liverpool have proved they are still strong contenders for the Premier league by smash-ing Manchester United 4-1 at old Trafford. Man U looked on course to stretch there lead over Liverpool and Chelsea when Christiano Ronaldo slotted a penalty in the first half after Pepe Riena fouled Park in the box. But danger man Fernando Tor-res pressured Vidic into a mistake and ran through to coolly beat Van der Sar.

Patrice Evra then gave away the sec-ond penalty of the game and Gerrard kept calm on the spot and hit it past Van der Sar Liverpool were more creative all over the pitch unlike their lifeless opposi-tion and with 15 minutes to go Gerrard was through on goal and badly fouled by Vidic who got sent off and the free kick was skilfully curled in by Fabio Aurelio. Just too finish it off in stoppage time substitute Dossena gracefully chipped the ball over the head of Edvin Var Der Sar
