Have you ever wondered where butterflies come from? Do they just appear from no where? Are there little baby butterflies? How about caterpillars? What do they have to do with butterflies? Well, in this assignment you are going to have a chance to find out just how butterflies come to be by exploring the changes that occur in their life cycle.

So what are you going to do?Each member in the group will take a stage of the life cycle.

Stage 1: EggStage 2: LarvaStage 3: PupaStage 4: Adult

Your job is to define you stage and write down facts to share with the other members of your group. Pay close attention to the words in bold, those are vocabulary words. Once all of the stages have their information, as a group, you will create a life cycle poster. Each stage must be illustrated, labeled and placed in the correct order. Neatness counts! We all want to see what you have learned!

Let's Explore!

1. Students will meet in the group the teacher assigned them to.

2. Teacher will assign the stages at random.

3. Students will use the Information Sources to gather facts about their stage and define given vocabulary words.

4. The group will come together and share what was found for each stage and the definitions of their vocabulary words. Each member must have a copy of all vocab words.

5. As a group, work together to accurately illustrate and label the life cycle of a butterfly to create a poster.

From their tiny beginnings as eggs to their transformation to beautiful delicate adult butterflies.
