We did not Win back the Potty Once again I’m waxing lyrical¹ and humming a tune all day while I have been working on suitable words. Again you say! Well, yes as I started on this in July last year, for those who are not paying attention. It must go into the Guinness Book of Records as the longest hum! The potty pictured below is the trophy on the line to the win-ners of the challenge between PHSOB and Old Eds. Bring back my Bonnie is a traditional Scottish folk song possi-bly originating from the time of Bonnie Prince Charlie, and is now sung at Scout camps or as parodies in Barrack Room bal-lads, etc. My parody follows. First verse The “potty” lies over the Jukskei Maybe the boerie curtain to ye The potty lies over the Jukskei So bring back the potty to me. Chorus Bring back, bring back, O bring back the “Potty” to me, to me: Bring back, bring back, O bring back the “Potty” to me My mother made beer in the bathtub², My father made synthetic gin, My sister made fudge for a tickey, Wouldja believe how the money rolled in? Repeat chorus Some skips drink beer by the bathtub, Some seconds might try the gin But the leads will remain sober So will the trophy roll in? Repeat chorus I enjoyed beer from the bathtub, I even tried synthetic gin, I ate the fudge made for a living, Now look at the shape that I am in. Repeat chorus Did the skips drink beer by the bathtub? Did the thirds the synthetic gin? The leads did they stay sober “Cos the “potty” is with them agin!³ Repeat chorus, if you are still with me!

Some explanation

¹Waxing has nothing to do with the waxing the skis or bikini area but to do with growing or becoming as does the tide and the moon. As we who have studied deep into Greek history know that the lyre is a stringed instrument like a small U-shaped harp with strings fixed to a crossbar and was used to accompany sing-ing. So the word lyrical often means "as in singing, suitable for singing."

²Not pilsner, ale, but lather!

³ We lost the potty 13-3

Might have been heard on the Green

Says one to another “I see you have Hensilite“Tiger” balls”

Np says another to one “They’re Tiger woods!!

Since my Mum started everyone’s at it

Joking of course.

Here we see Boet Slabbert with Alan Dawson, Captain of Old Eds team who is holding on to the trophy.

Every so often with the introduction of new members, and perhaps a reminder to the longer serving mem-bers including me as well, there is a need to remind ourselves of the role that we play, and our behaviour in the position that we play. In this edition I start with the lead and over the next 3 issues I will address the roles of seconds, thirds and Skips. So eyes down and looking here goes. The Lead Objective: to lay the foundation of the head

He¹ starts the game by placing the mat the front of which is a minimum of 2 metres from the rear ditch. Watch the skip as he may call for the mat to be “brought up”

He delivers the jack to a point indicated by the skip

He checks that it is properly centred. (Where the jack has not travelled 23 metres in a straight line from the front of the mat or has landed in the front ditch it is returned and the opposing lead can relay the mat if directed by his skip and will deliver the jack, but will not play first.)

He delivers his bowl as close as possible to the jack, but not to hit the jack as this could change the structure of the head.

When the leads and seconds have completed their turn they move to the other end. Be-fore stepping off the lead of the team to play first places the bowl of his third close to or on the mat.

At the other end they stand 2 metres behind the jack and clear of the centre line marker and outer peg, and stand still. If the jack has been moved closer to the ditch then stand on the bank.

When the score has been decided;

The lead whose team has won the end collects the mat and jack, and gets ready to start the new end. This speeds up the game.

As a good gesture the opposing lead can pick up the jack and hand it to his opponent and then assist in gathering all the bowls.

The lead’s objective is to give his skip a good foundation upon which to build a head. He ought to be able to deliver a jack consistently to the required length and gauge the amount of line and weight by using the trial ends (if played) to gauge line and weight. Once a hand has been chosen the lead should stay on the same hand unless otherwise directed by his skip. ¹The masculine is used to denote the masculine or feminine

RIP Paddy Hoole Paddy was an active member of the club until ill health restricted him from be-ing able to bowl regularly but it cer-tainly didn’t stop him from being in-

volved in our social occasions!

Paddy will be remembered with fond-ness for his sense of humour and his

flower arranging abilities!

Our condolences and deepest sympathy goes to Petra, family and friends .

His memorial service will be held at Zwavelpoort Catholic Church, Atter-bury Road on 2nd August at 12.00pm.

If you are wearing club colours please wear your red shirt.

Guess Who?

Oh so you like anagrams, how about this one of

someone who appears else-where across these pages.

Kick the Habit

-Applauding a fluke shot

It is considered unsportsmanlike for team mates to applaud a fluke shot. Also do not say, “Well played” if your team gets a fluke, keep quiet. Admit a fluke shot openly, and even apologise.

Note that this is different from instances where a skip directs a player to “work off “ bowls in front of the jack such as a “chop and lie”. In this case it would be a good shot so applaud it, even if it is one the opposition had played.

Likewise, do not say “thank you” if your opponent happens to give the shot away. Rather say “bad luck”.

I was going to discontinue this topic but there was some interest, so here goes again.

Please identify this person heavily in disguise.

An anagram clue is Led Nicker.

Second from the left in the pic-ture right along with Elzabe and Paul Tucker who introduced Deon

at the recent “Buddy Day” and he was hooked. Also there is

Braam van Straa-den his coach.

Lonnie Smuts is anoth-er new member having graduated from the “Saturday Morning

Crowd”. In the pic on the left he is seen playing a Novice competition al-

ready.

Rassie Erasmus (right) is currently only a social bowler and plans to play twice a week . He has been a member of Outeniqua Bowling Club in George for about three years. He is mostly active on the Nomads side where he plays once a month. He participated in the Nomads National Tournament in East London last year and will do the same this year in Boksburg early August. He has joined us as a Dual member

Believe it or not this is the end of the 24th edition that I have pro-duced. Yup that’s it, 2 x12 editions when I was at school was 24. How about yours?

Competitions have gone down like a wrong bias whereas “Guess Who” has hung in like a successful ditch shot.

To my few correspondents, more contributors with photographs and editorial I say thanks. Those who have helped behind the scenes with comment and proof reading I express my appreciation.

What of the future, who knows?

It is becoming more difficult to be original. However copy is still coming in, keep it up and as long as we are having fun I can probably add my bit.

But, be as it may to be there at all is what matters doesn't it?

Theresa Bason (right). has been playing Ten-nis and Badminton and involved with Ballroom Dancing in the past. Last year she was invited by a friend to play bowls at her Club and one of the seniors had started coaching her. She then met the Senior Ladies who were playing at the PHSOB Club on a Thursday morning and was struck by the friendliness of the bowlers and the welcoming atmosphere of the PHSOB.

As Theresa was looking for a Club which was closer and where she would feel at home she contacted a member. They met at the Club, coaching sessions were arranged and Theresa started practising. Even as a non-member she was greeted with friendly smiles. She played her first game of Tabs on Saturday 27 July, although quite nervous, she was welcomed and made to feel at ease by her Team and the other players.
