Washed Kreta blocks are a hit in the collection of distinction blocks. A specialtechnological process is used to reveal the distinction aggregate used in the upperlayer, due to which we obtain an extremely elegant surface. The laid pavementis similar to basalt although it is smooth and anti-slip.Washed Kreta is popular among persons of exquisite taste. It proves itself bothfor impressive mansions and elegant one-family houses. Five blocks of varioussizes assure freedom of composition and allow creating interesting and uniquepatterns. In order to diversify the composition of the pavement it is worthcombining the washed Kreta with washed Malta of bigger size and regular shape. The width of two Kreta blocks is equivalent to one width of Malta block.

Malta – is for those who like straight lines and geometric shapes. The pavementslaid from Malta are usually regular and toned down. However, it is easy to changea pavement’s character by combining Malta with small Kreta blocks. In this way, using other shapes or colours, it is possible to highlight the finishing of pathsor the lines along which we stroll most often. Next to the basic colours, the anthracite blend is also an attractive combination of greyness of graniteand blackness of basalt which attracts the attention of even the most demandingcustomers. The system of six chamferless blocks should be laid alternatively usingblocks from three different pallets.

Just as smooth Kreta, it charms with ideally harmonizing colours which introducethe climate of peace, relax and positive energy. When subject to the process of ageingthey gain a little rustic character and in this way they better melt in with the surroundinglandscape. Original compositions can be obtained by combining the aged Kretawith Malta. For building the three-dimensional elements it is worth using the agedborders Milano and Rome R2 and R3. All products are of the colours of „Coffee inspirations”which is great for obtaining consistency of an area under development.

Roma, just as the ancient city, has spirit. Subject to an ageing process it acquiresa specific character and by that it makes up a material that creates an excellentsetting for both classic and rustic architecture. Not infrequently, the architects, just for contrast, use this type of pavement in modern structures. An invaluable quality of Roma blocks is that they are “dyed in the cake” and, following this, they look equally good from all sides. This allows layingthe pavement and erecting spatial elements from it such as, for instance, low walls, stairs and fences, which contributes to the uniformity of the composition. The colours Caramel, Latte and Mocca in shapes R2 and R3 are especially dedicatedas supplementation of the Kreta and Malta block lines in ”Coffee inspirations”.Other colours are available in all dimensions, both in rectangular (R1, R2, R3)and trapezoidal shapes (R4, R5) due to which both geometrical and irregularpatterns can be made from them.

Reinforcement of banks from Verduro planters should be made using the elements of the same type. The base serves as a foundationmade from concrete of class B20 (as per drawing). The elements should be embedded in layers and immediately filled with earth.Maximum reinforcing bank height using the Verduro Mini planters is 125 cm, and higher structures should be designed individuallytaking into account the pressure of earth masses. There is a possibility of multi-step reinforcement of the bank, however, in this case, the bank should be offset – see the drawing. During erection of the reinforcement, the level, the rectilinearity and arc radius of the laidout elements should be checked as well as the inclination of the performed reinforcement.

The borders should be set so as to prevent lateral spreading or setting of the pavement made from cobble blocks or slabs. The cobbleblocks and slabs have tight dimensional tolerances therefore it is necessary to lay single rows of blocks or slabs before setting the bordersin order to determine the correct distinction between the borders limiting the width of the pavement.
Method of completion:1. Dig out a trench 20 cm deep and of width equal to the width of the spade and half fill it with the concrete with the consistency of wet earth and level its surface.2. Set the borders and align them. Using a rubber hammer drive in (and set) the borders at the required height, at the same keeping time the required inclination of the pavement. Places where the elements contact with each other should be covered with concrete along a length of about 30 cm.
Note:The individual pieces of border should not be joined with mortar as cracks can occur following thermal linear expansion of elements.Additionally, such a method of joining causes ugly-looking stripes at places of joints.

TECHNICAL DATA
TIPS AND GUIDANCE
Commonly accepted principles of laying cobbles and terrace tiles and information about bloomingand deviation from colours.
Before purchasing the cobble blocks, select their thickness depending on loads and trac volume. The concrete tiles and blocks of thickness from 40 to 60 mm should be laid in pedestrian courses, for instance, on sidewalks, garden alleys, terraces etc. To make access roads to a property, it is necessary to use cobble elements of a minimum thickness 60 mm and a correct base course adequate for the loads. If the trac of heavy vehicles is expected, then use the blocks of thickness 80 mm or more, remembering about the correct preparation of the substructure. Practically, the principles of colour or tile selection are equally important as their aesthetical qualities. Because of the above-mentioned reasons, it is advisable to order the paving project and its realization from a reputable company specializing in paving.
Pavement project
Before commencing with cobbling work, it is advisable to prepare the design of the pavement. Due to that it is possible to calculate actual demand for cobble blocks allowing some surplus for trimming. It is better to buy a little more material and its surplus may be used for making additional segments of pavement or possibly for replacement of damaged elements in the future. It should be remembered that between blocks of the same type there may be dierent shades, which is quite normal. It is a natural product so sometimes another shade of sand used for production or dierent weather conditions during curing may result in dierent colours of blocks from dierent production batches.
Ground
Before commencing with cobbling work, check the base ground. It is advisable to perform a geological survey especially in case of trac on the pavement to be constructed. The base ground should be uniform and of correct load-bearing capacity. It is also important to protect it against excessive wetness and freezing.
Bedding
In natural ground, perform necessary grading and dewatering lines. To this end, the level run of the sidewalk is shaped; bends are set out, as well as transition curves and junctions. Necessary tools depend on the scope of work. In the case of small area pavements, a straightedge and mason’s level should be enough. Large area pavements, however, require heavy road building machines to be used.
Base course
Depending on properties of the ground substructure and expected design loads of the pavement, the base course should be made which makes up the construction layer. Most often they are made from a mixture of sand and gravel with an aggregate fraction from 0 to 32mm which in some cases is stabilized, with a mixture of cement. In case of higher loads, substructures from lean concrete are used or from construction concrete. When proling the substructure, remember to make a necessary gradient allowing drainage of rainwater. The construction layer is compacted to obtain appropriate stabilization. The base course should be so stable that the sand sub-crust cannot sink into it. All roughness of the construction layer inuences the thickness of sand sub-crust and, in consequence, the roughness of the surface after compaction. Incorrectly selected loads and incorrectly completed base course have an adverse eect on aesthetical qualities and cause damage to the performed the pavement.
The base course should meet the following requirements:
- load capacity should be sucient for highest admissible trac volume according to the requirements provided in the table below- the axis should be appropriately located within the plane and a correctly shaped surface will assure required dewatering of the pavement according to the project documentation- the base course should be bordered from all sides with curbs or borders or with other added pavement between which the abrasive layer from vibro-pressed pavers should be laid.
Sub-crust
The sub-crust, depending on type of loads, is made from sand, sand mixed with cement, gravel or key aggregate of particle size 2-4mm. The sub-crust layer is generally from 30 to 50 mm thick and its surface should be ushed using straightedge. Level surface of the sub-crust should be left loose without compaction.
157156
Laying blocks and tiles
Before commencing with laying the pavement, check whether the delivered materials are conforming to the order. On the previously made sub-crust, lay thecobbling elements, observing the necessary distinction (joints) 3 - 5 mm between them. The spacers which are on some types of blocks or tiles are meant to facilitate the correct laying of pavement but they alone do not assure correct width of joints. Material should be laid so as to prevent shifting of laid rows on the sub-crust layer. In order to avoid dierences in colour shades, mix products from at least 3 pallets. The laid pavement should be lled in joints with sand of particle size 0-2 mm at about 2/3 height. Course-grained sand can suspend and cause non-uniform lling of joints. Correct lling is important in order to prevent shifting of tiles or blocks, which can result in shearing the edges of elements following mutual pressure. Before compacting, the sand used for joint lling should be removed from the surface.
Compaction
The plate of the compactor should be even and clean and additionally protected by a exible cover. The surface of tiles or blocks should be dry and clean without traces of sand used for lling. Compaction should be carried out “smoothly” so as to avoid punctual compaction. After compaction has been nished, replenish the lling of the joints to full height with sand. Complete lling of joints assures correct load bearing capacity of the performed pavement.
Guidelines
The pre-condition for good performance of the pavement is draining the rainwater. Therefore, it is recommended to make an inclination of the surface up to 2.5-4%. Axis of the pavement from cobble blocks cannot be oset in relation to the designed axis by more than 2 cm. Deviations of height for the abrasive layer from the designed ordinate of height cannot exceed 2 cm. The block surface should be even, so as after applying the straightedge 4 m long in every direction, the deviations do not exceed 8 mm. Deviations from the width should not exceed 5 cm. Admissible deviation of height between the planes of adjacent elements (blocks) in the abrasive layer should not exceed 2 mm for elements of smooth surface and 5 mm for elements of machined surface, for instance, by bead blasting or ageing. The block pavement laid near technical facilities infrastructure (for instance, wells, hatches) should project 3-5 mm above these facilities and 3-10 mm above ditch linings.
Principles of laying chamferless blocks
1. Chamferless blocks should be laid strictly observing the principle of leaving joints at least 3-5 mm wide.2. The cobbler should see to that the joint dimension is kept.3. The factory - made spacers on blocks require maintaining the appropriate width of the joint that protects the edges against extreme loads and, following this, shearing the edges of blocks.4. Compaction using a vibrator should always be preceded with lling the gaps with sand up to 2/3 of the block height.5. For compaction, use only a compactor with a plastic cover on the working plate.
The above-mentioned guidelines are in practical use in the cobbling industry; however, because of the great variety of dierent tasks which a contractorand investor may encounter, they are only for instructive purposes.
Most often encountered faultsduring laying pavement
- poor base course,- incorrectly selected type of blocks,- too tightly laid blocks,- too thin layer of sub-crust under blocks,- incorrectly proled surface (too high or too small inclinations),- laying blocks without mixing them from a few pallets at the same time,- compacting using machine without protecting cover from plastics.
Blooming
On cobbling products may appear discolorations in the form of white tarnish. This results from manufacturing faults. Blooming appears following natural physical and chemical processes taking place in concrete. Calcium hydroxide produced during the hydration of concrete has a direct eect on blooming. A part of this calcium compound which is not permanently bound with other concrete ingredients gets to the surface as a result of water evaporation, making a white tarnish on the surface of blocks – calcium carbonate. With time, it becomes an easily-soluble bicarbonate. Following this chemical reaction and rain and abrasion of the surface, the blooming gets washed and disappears after some time. This process lasts from 1 to 3 years.
According to the applicable Polish Standards PN-EN 1339 and PN-EN 1338 – Requirements and test methods as per point 5.4.1 :” .... Possible blooming has no adverse eect on performance characteristics …(blocks, tiles)… and it is regarded as insignicant.
Point 5.4.3. – Colouration „.... Dierences in colour uniformity …(blocks, tiles)…, which can be caused by unavoidable changes in the properties of raw materials or by change of curing conditions are regarded as insignicant”.It should be stressed that blooming is completely independent on a manufac-turer. Technological eorts concentrate on limiting these phenomena.
Deviations from colour
Despite control of all factors inuencing the quality of colours and using highest quality dyestu, small deviations of colour on the element surface may appear. They are unavoidable because of natural uctuations of colours in raw materials and they do not cause deterioration of product quality. Also, age of concrete has a signicant eect on changes in colours. It is connected with the natural stabilization of colour. To avoid dierences in colour, the blocks should be laid by taking them from 3 dierent pallets.
TECHNICAL DATA
IMPREGNATE BUSZREM
Impregnate for cobble blocksand terrace tiles
The impregnate is intended both for cobble blocks, tiles and other concrete pavements. It penetrates capillary pores without changing original colours and anti-slip properties of concrete. It is resistant to alkali and enables “breathing” of concrete. Products protected with the impregnate become much more resistant to dirt such as combustion deposits, clay, food stains (stains of ink, red wine, coee, ketchup, mustard mayonnaise). Liquids poured on the surface protected with the impregnate do not penetrate concrete structure provided they are quickly removed (depending on the kind of soiling, from a few hours to a few days).
Method of application:
Apply on surfaces at a temperature from +5°C to +30°C during rainless weather. The impregnated product should not soak water or contaminations from the substrate. The impregnated surface should be dry, clean, without blooming and other contaminations and coats. The undiluted product should be applied uniformly using a spray gun, brush or roll. Consumption depends on absorbability and is about 100 - 300 ml/m2. When tiles have already joints lled with impermeable lling, they should be impregnated after the joints have been lled. If there is sand in joints or the joint is permeable, impregnation should be done before lling the joints.
Storage:
Protect the product against freezing, high temperatures and direct sunlight. Keep at a temperature of 5°C - 25°C.
Information on safe handling:
Avoid contact with eyes. In case of contact, wash eyes immediately using copious amounts of running water. If the symptoms persist, consult a doctor.
