Course Description
The Career Action course is taken by students during semester 4 (as it relates to 2 year programs) or 5 (as it relates to 3 year programs) and is designed to prepare students for thecurrent and evolving job market.
Individually, students will learn how to prepare a targeted resume and cover letter showcasingtheir career objective, skills summary/highlights (including soft and hard skills), education, andwork experience/achievements. These are written as a selling tool – to get job interviews.
The importance of networking as it relates to job search and career enhancement is also
examined. Students will also be able to identify the integral elements of the selection processas it relates to popular types of selection tests, and interview structures/types used byemployers to screen job candidates.
Emphasis is placed on exploring how best to prepare for and execute the various phases of the job interview utilizing the STAR technique in order to be considered the strongest candidate for the job, which includes:
1. Interview Preparation,
2. Interview Practice• Introductions, Knowing their target, Probing phase, Closing, After Interview
Strategies/Follow-up’s3. Interview Performance
Students will observe, participate and provide facilitated feedback to several mock-jobinterviews as they prepare for their own interview simulation 1:1 with the professor.
Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Construct and deliver effective “proof stories” for both verbal and written use, utilizing
the STAR format.
2. Understand the essential elements of, and prepare, an effective targeted resume and
cover letter.
3. Understand how to establish network contacts in order to gain information and target
both their job search and interview preparation.
4. Attend a networking event or information interview.5. Identify the most popular types of selection tests and their purpose in the selection
process.
6. Understand the purpose of a job interview.
7. Identify the different types of job interview structures.
8. Identify and understand the different types of interview questions that may be asked,

Global Citizenship and Equity (GC&E) Outcomes
GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP & EQUITY PORTFOLIO SUMMATIVE
Students will be asked to reflect and write a word processed 1-2 page summary on thedevelopment of their GC&E Portfolio journey. Within this summative they will reflect on all sixGC&E outcomes.
Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR) Process(es)
This course is available for PLAR challenge according to the following combined methods:(If a student is registered in the course, PLAR is only available up until the second class.
1) Conduct research on an organization and submit a career relevant analysis/report.2) Submit a targeted resume and cover letter with a supporting targeted job description.3) Complete an interview with the professor. Candidates will be required to respond to
various prepared questions and to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner.4) The resume, cover letter and interview require the student to display knowledge of the
course content.

Evaluation and Grading System
*Overall grade of C+ (65%) or greater WITH a grade of A (80%) or higher on both thetargeted resume* and targeted cover letter* assignments is achieved, the student will receivetheir earned grade.
If EITHER of these components is not achieved, the student will receive an F.
