Celebrating the Best of Healthcare

The highly-awaited MedilinkWM Medical and Healthcare Business Awards 2015 took place on January 14, bringing together business representatives, clinicians, researchers, and academics from the region’s medical and healthcare technology sector to reveal who would be walking away with our prestigious awards denoting excellence in a different category each, including Start-Up, Innovation, Export Achievement, Partnership with the NHS, and Outstanding Achievement.

Held this year at Malmaison Birmingham, one ofBirmingham’s most luxurious and popular hotels, situated at the heart of the Mailbox, the annual Medilink West Midlands Medical and Healthcare Business Awards provides an excellent opportunity to bring together leading organisations from across thesector and celebrate the best achievements across the West Midlands region as well as give guests a chance to enjoy a fun evening of networking.

Before a warm welcome and note of thanks was giveby our awards sponsor Ingram Hawkins and Nock, guests were handed a dubious though as some may prefer to call ‘excellently innovative’ note each, which albeit fake and unable to be fixed by our respected

magician proved perfectly exchangeable as chips to be lost at our casino tables - though recompensed hopefully by the new connections and contacts gained.

Following on from our networking reception, guests were seated for dinner before the highly-anticipated awards ceremony began and the winners finally revealed to the excellent sound effects of make-shift drum rolls ... s

As proven by each and every shortlisted organisation, finalist, winner and indeed the high level of awardentries and submissions themselves, the West Midlands is home to some of the most innovative and successful medical and healthcare companies, each with a great commitment to supporting product and service development with a view to enrich healthcare in both the region and beyond.

We’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our winners and indeed all of our finalists, sponsors and guests for their continued help, participation and support in helping to celebrate the outstanding achievements in healthcare across the West Midlands and in making the WM 2015 Medical & Healthcare Business Awards such a memorable event.

Our winners now go on to represent the region at the national Medilink UK Awards, which takes place at the MedTech Innovation Expo, Ricoh Arena, Coventry in April this year.

The latest innovations in development are being designed to improve the effectiveness and availability of the cooling cap which Paxman first developed in the late 1990s with help from Primasil. Their main challenge this time was to create a new silicone rubber formulation that would give the reusable cap greater flexibility to adapt to varying head shapes and sizes around the world. In addition, the partners looked at ways of increasing automation in the cap’s production to satisfy increasing demand for the product.

Chemotherapy affects rapidly dividing cells, which include most of our hair follicles. Its unintended consequence can be atrophy of the hair root bulb. The Paxman cooling cap essentially consists of a compact refrigeration system connected to a lightweight silicone rubber cap. By lowering the head and scalp temperature, immediately before, after and during treatment, it reduces blood flow to the follicles and so prevents or minimises damage.

Top Tips on Protecting Your BrandBY AMY WOOD AND JOHN FERDINAND - MARKS AND CLERK LLP

Clearing your brandFor all types of marks, it is advisable to conduct searches to determine freedom to use the mark and avoid confusion with any existing third party rights. This is particularlyworthwhile in the medical and healthcare sector where there could be clear public health considerations should confusion arise.

Using your markOnce using a trade mark, it is crucial to show consistently that the mark is being used as a trade mark for the goods and services concerned. In promotional material, it is necessary to always ensure that the mark is used as an adjective as opposed to a verb or noun as, through continued use of thelatter, the mark is at risk of becoming generic.

We are thrilled to have received the Medilink InnovationAward this year. It is wonderful recognition of what we can do for an industry where product innovation makes a real difference to people’s lives. Silicone rubber is a remarkable material, and with subtle alterations to its chemistry, we can develop ideal materials for specific and varied applications. When the right minds are brought together our potential for creating, improving and transforming medical devices is almost limitless.

FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE VISIT WWW.MARKS-CLERK.COM OR CONTACT:T: 0121 643 5881

Choosing a new brandThe initial decision of selecting a trade mark and in particular the name for a new product can be difficult one. Generally, from a legal perspective the strongest marks are those that are wholly invented, such as ROLEX or VIAGRA, as they are highly distinctive and easier marks to enforce. However even marks such as APPLE and INNOCENT - words in the public domain and yet applied in an unusual way - can result in brands just as strong. Depending on the type of product and the market, there can be a preference to adopt marks which provide some kind of indication as to the nature or purpose of the products in question so a message is conveyed to customers. The problem is that it may be very difficult to obtain protection for descriptive trade marks and prevent others using them. It is a good idea to balance the importance of conveying specific information to customers about the nature of the product against that of building a strong and enforceable brand name.

Consider protection for more than just “word” trade marksThe choice of packaging and other branding elements, such as logos can be equally as important for your brand - where branding materials and packaging have been designed by external agencies it is important to make sure that IP rights in the designs are transferred to your business - in many cases unless there is a specific agreement on this point your business will not own the IP even if you have paid for the work to be done!

In addition to this is their ever-evolving partnership approach; they work together with the NHS, other manufacturers, suppliers & customers; utilising their facilities to best effect and to the benefit ofcustomers and patients.

KIMAL HAVE OFFICES AND STAFF GLOBALLY EMPLOYING IN EXCESS OF 200 PEOPLE.

Integro Pharmacy

Integro is a specialist pharmacy that develops systems

and processes to help carers and care organisations ensure their patients are taking the right medication at the right time.

Historically the dispensing, administration and re-ordering of prescriptions have been stand-alone activities. Because systems are largely paper based, there is little visibility or data sharing between the care home and the pharmacy. Thus, Integroengaged with care homes to develop an integrated approach for medicines management.

We rolled out an integrated system (along with training and revised processes) to help care

homes manage their medication rounds more

accurately and their medication replenishment

more efficiently.

The use of electronicmedication records is now gaining widespread acceptance and this can only benefit patients whose medication is being managed more safely.

The recording and sharing of actions taken helps care homes ensure and also demonstrate compliance with medicationregulations. Because customers are better able to plan and record their medication managementactivities, they are also more organised and efficient.

INTEGRO’S DEVELOPMENT FROM LAUNCHING IN 2010 HAS BEEN ENDORSED BY WINNING CHEMIST & DRUGGIST MAGAZINE’S 2014 CLINICAL SERVICE OF THE YEAR. THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM is pleased to announce

the launch of its first Business with Birmingham Innovation Competition in order to celebrate entrepreneurship andinnovation. The competition was launched at the Business with Birmingham annual conference on 20 November 2015, with winners to be announced this year.

THIS YEAR’S ONES TO WATCH• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

SELF-CARE SMARTWATCH REDUCING BURDEN ON HEALTH SERVICEAND KEEPING PEOPLE OUT OF HOSPITAL

Renfrew Group International (RGi) and Aseptika Ltd, developers of a range of self-monitoring medical devices, some in the form of wearable technologies, aimed

at assisting patients to self-manage long-term health conditions at home, have been working together on the development of the Activ8rlives BuddyWOTCH™.

This solution will provide “expert” pathways for use by both patient/carers and the healthcare team to inform, manage and report the success of self-care plans so that patients can remain independent at home, with a better quality and more sustainable model of care. Such solutions must be truly wearable, comfortable, ergonomic, attractive, and suitable for use with minimal training by consumers, often age-related. Achieving this whilst developing the packaging design, mechanical engineering and design for production has been the Renfrew Group team’s priority.

The BuddyWOTCH project, funded under the SBRI Healthcare programme, is for the development of a wearable health monitor Class 2 Medical Device. It comprises a wrist-worn smartwatch – “WOTCH” = Walking, Oxygenation, Temperature, Camera (image capture of medication, food and liquids) and Heartrate; a fingertip-worn sensing band for measuring blood oxygen – FingerBand SpO2; and a charging base – BaseStation. Together, they form the BuddyWOTCH. Each element of the product system require certifiable electronics and software, and RGi are creating an innovative mechanical design in which it can be packaged.
