LE NOTIZIE
DI TREVOR Our core
business at BSPS is our focus on student learning.
This has been in full swing this week as students have been finalising their learning goals and preparing to share them with you next Monday and Tuesday. Summer is certainly going out with a bang and we’ve been given a last burst of some very warm weather before we head into autumn.
Student Led Conferences are into their second year at BSPS. With our leadership team we have worked to strengthen the process and ensure more consistency with goal setting across the school. If you haven’t booked in for a time to meet with your child and a teacher from the learning area, please head to https://www.schoolinterviews.com.au/ now and book using event code: E D V C 5.
After your conference we ask that you keep the conversation around your child’s goals going at home.
Here are some prompts when you are discussing these goals at home:
Can you explain what your goal means?
How will you know when you are making progress?
What can we do at home to help you achieve this goal?
How might your teacher help you achieve this goal?
POLICIESWe have attached a copy of our Access to School Grounds Policy and Community Code of Conduct for the new school year and for some families new to our school community. These policies help maintain a safe and supportive environment for students, families and our school staff. Please take a moment to refamiliarise yourself with these and contact us with any questions.
Please remember that in accordance with our Access to School Grounds Policy, our school yard is supervised from 8.45am – 9.00am in the morning and then from 3.30pm – 3.45pm in the afternoons. Any child in the yard outside of these times needs to be in Out of School Hours Care (OSHC). Our 3.45pm bell is a reminder for all students in the yard who haven’t been collected to go to reception and for families to leave the school grounds to make room for the students in after school care to come out and use the school grounds.
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAYWe stopped to reflect in honour of International Women’s Day at BSPS last Friday. At all levels our school was involved in sharing the key theme of #balanceforbetter. Our students led the charge this year - organising a Bake Sale to raise money for the Blue Dragon Foundation. This event raised a staggering $1086 to provide essential care and support for children in crisis in Vietnam. The compassion shown by these students was heartwarming, as was seeing them so active and passionate in supporting causes around the world.
Thank you and well done to Rosie, Mia, Lara, Alysha, Rosie, Tessa, Persephone, Oscar, Maddy and Florence!
SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE School Council nominations closed yesterday and we had another positive response from parents and carers interested in being part of our School Council. With more nominations than positions available we will be going to a ballot. Our nominees are busy preparing a short ‘bio’ and the ballot forms will go out next Thursday (21 March). The ballot will close the following Thursday and we will announce the successful candidates.
ANNUAL IMPLEMENTATION PLAN (AIP)Our 2019 Annual Implementation Plan has been endorsed by School Council and by DET (Dept of Education and Training) and is now available on the school website. This plan outlines in detail our work for this year and ensures our energy is focused on what will have the greatest impact on our learners. This year our work will centre around Numeracy and Writing, with staff working collaboratively on our school wide goals. In addition we will further be building intellectual engagement and self awareness in our learners and building on their voice in the teaching and learning process. We are currently working on an ‘at a glance’ document which will support the wider community to understand and support the work in our AIP.
ARRIVERDERCI We have been truly lucky to have Sam Eason support our STEM program for the first part of this term, but with his plans to do some travel we knew it was only going to be for a short time. Sam has made STEM engaging, hands on and exciting for our students, in fact last week I even witnessed him giving a lesson to some eager parents after the Information Session. Thank you, Sam for all you have achieved in such a short time and for fitting in seamlessly to our school community. We’d love to see you back at BSPS after your world travels. In the meantime we are undergoing a selection process for a teacher for the rest of 2019. We hope to have this finalised by the end of term.
I’ll see you all tomorrow afternoon at our annual welcome event and the inaugural Bush Dance!Trevor.

PERFORMING ARTSWeek 7 and the 3/4’s are off to Northcote Pool for swimming lessons. Gone are the days where we had to remind students not to throw their clothes around but place them neatly in their bags! We have a great group of independent and lively students who have made us proud with their outstanding behaviour.
In Italian Literacy we are exploring Identità through pubblicità and learning some of the tricky ways advertising is created to make us buy a product. We have all fallen in love with Molino Bianco’s Pan di Stella and it has been interesting to note how some of the advertising products we have pulled apart have turned up in lunchboxes!
In Reading and Lettura we have been focusing on annotating so that we can share what we learn! This week in English reading we have started focusing on annotating inferences.
Some of the other annotations we have been sharing include important information, surprising information, questions and new learning.
In Lettura this week we have been focusing on annotating important information, questions and Cosa?? (I don’t understand this word or why this thing is happening!)
In Misura we are investigating Mass, Volume and Capacity and have had some very interesting conversations. For example, after reading Mr Archimedes’ Bath, someone commented that, “a bath can only overflow once when you hop in, it does not keep overflowing”! Or when calculating the capacity of an object using MAB blocks, “You don’t have to fill the entire cube, you can do the base and one column and then multiply one by the other.” Mathematical thinking at its very best!!

Facts about students, health & active travelToday, levels of physical activity are significantly lower when compared with statistics 40 years ago.
The Ride2School team are working to reverse this trend. This infographic is designed to show the benefits
of increased physical activity with students and the school community.
About the Ride2School ProgramBicycle Network’s flagship behaviour change program works to make active travel normal for students,
while improving schools education outcomes. The program aims to tailor its assistance to suit the needs or overcome the barriers faced by each school.

In the 1970s, 8 out of 10 students rode or walked to school. Today there are only
2 out of 10.
60 minutes is the minimum daily
requirement for physical activity for children under 18.
Schools that participate in the Ride2School program
achieve an average of 5 in 10 students who
actively travel to school.
Over the past 40 years, the number of children who are
physically active everyday has significantly dropped.
Students who actively travel arrive awake and alert, improving their
concentration in class and ability to understand the curriculum.
Getting children out of cars and into active transport is believed to be the most effective way to
improve levels of physical activity.
Physical activity is ranked second to tobacco
control as the most important factor in disease prevention
in Australia.
Active Transport can reduce congestion and parking problems, leading to healthier environments and
communities.
Physically active students are healthier,
happier and more socially connected.
