Don’t you love

murders. That’s why I wrote this play about them.”

With a series of fascinating stories about powerful, beautiful murderesses given to her from the pages of real life, she did what any good writer does, she penned them into an edge-of-your-seat story, the story of Chicago.

Almost fifty years after its premiere, Fred Ebb, John Kander, and Bob Fosse took Watkins fascinating play and turned it into Chicago: A Musical Vaudeville. The show opened on Broadway in June of 1975 and ran for more than 900 days garnering mixed reviews. The musical was nominated for more than ten Tony® Awards (including Jerry Orbach for Best Actor), two Drama Desk awards, and three Olivier awards. While the original production of A Chorus Line captured most of the 1975/76 Tonys, the musical won the 1975 Drama Desk award for Outstanding Lighting Design. After a short

In 1927, a reporter for the New York Tele-graph asked reporter turned playwright Maurine Watkins to talk about how she came up with the story for the original

play Chicago. She responded, “I’ll tell you. But don’t you love a good murder?”

Watkins nabbed her first job as a reporter with the Chicago Tribune immediately after college earning more than double a starting ‘cub’s’ wage. Capturing the eye of her edi-tors, she was quickly assigned a beat cover-ing Chicago’s murders. Her popular, colorful reports won her assignments and more ink.

When asked about it, she told the New York Telegraph, “I got to the point where I prayed for murders. Not that you have to pray very long in vain in Chicago. But I prayed for good murders, and then I prayed that I would be sent out on murders. When I realized I was getting a murder-story complex, I quit. But I doubt if I’ll ever outgrow my love for

London production, the musical closed and lay silent for nearly twenty years.

In 1996 New York City Centre’s Encores! program, which takes rarely heard works of America’s most important composers and lyricists and gives them a chance to be per-formed, selected Chicago for its three-show season. After an enthusiastic reception, pro-ducers Barry and Fran Weissler had the re-vival up and on stage at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on November 14, 1996. The show soon moved to the Shubert Theatre where it played until 2003 when it became a New York institution at the Ambassador Theatre on Broadway.

Since its revival, it’s hard to believe that such a dramatic and award winning piece of American musical history was once con-sidered “rarely heard.” After eleven record-breaking years on Broadway, the current revival has been performed in twenty-three countries, translated into ten languages and been graced by an incredible number of top stars.

With over 16,000 performances for more than 18 million people, Chicago has grossed more than $850 million. That’s a far cry from cub reporter Maurine Watkins’ $50 a week salary to pen the exploits of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery. A salacious story in 1926, sul-

try musical in 1975 and show stopping block-buster today, the tales of Roxie Hart, Velma Kelly and Billy Flynn seem like they could be taken from today’s tabloid newsstand. It appears that the answer to Watkin’s “Don’t you love a good murder?” is a most resound-ing, Yes, yes we do. n

ballroom Danceburn the floor features “international style,” which has been danced competitively since 1920.

Ballroom dancing is comprised of ten dances.

The Five Standard Dances: The waltz is a ballroom dance with a strong accent on the first

beat and a pattern of step-step-close. The foxtrot employs a syncopated rhythm and the use of

“trotting steps.” Established as a French peasant dance in 1559, The Viennese waltz became

popular in the 1800s in Vienna. The Tango originated in Argentina and was brought to Paris in

1910. In order to move around the ballroom floor, the international tango was born in the 1930s

and combined ballroom dances with staccato action. Emerging from ragtime and from dances

like The Charleston, Quickstep follows a 4/4 rhythm, similar to foxtrot.

The Five Latin Dances: The Cuban Cha Cha was popularized in the 1950s and is an off-

shoot of the triple mambo. The Samba originated in Brazil and features intricate cross percussive

music. paso doble developed in France and is of Spanish origin. Its high style was based on the

use of both marching steps and the bull fight. The rumba, also Cuban, is the most sensuous of

the Latin American dances. It is a dance of lust. The Jive is based on jazz or improv; it originated

in the U.S. from African-Americans in the early 1940s. Soldiers brought the lindy hop/jitterbug

to Europe during WWII.

Mamma Mia! and Detroit party on!

photos © 2010 Joan Marcus

Over forty-five million people in 180 cities around the world have fallen in love with the characters, the story and

the music that make Mamma Mia! the ulti-mate feel-good show.

An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna is about to let go of Sophie, the spir-ited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own.

On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediter-ranean paradise they visited twenty years earlier.

The story-telling magic of ABBA’s time-less songs propels the story over twenty-four

chaotic, magical hours as new love blooms and old romances are re-kindled.

Mamma Mia! is truly a smash hit musical in its tenth year on Broadway. The current North American Tour has played over 3,000 performanc-es in over 130 cit-

ies with 125 repeat visits. In fact, the show is return-ing to Detroit for a remarkable fifth return visit!

Bringing the timeless lyrics and melodies of iconic super group ABBA to new and returning audienc-es, Spring 2011 is the season for Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia! at the Fisher theatre one week only april 13–17. Tickets are on sale now at the Fisher Theatre box office, charge by phone (800) 982-2787 or at Ticketmaster.com. Groups of twelve or more email [email protected] (subject line Mamma) or call (313) 871-1132.

By Alain Boublil & Claude-Michel Schönberg, creators of Les Misérables

Our journey started in Paris in 1978, exactly five years after our first musical La révolution française, when Alain came back from London with the idea to write a musical based upon Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. The two of us had a memorable meeting and, af-ter a long five minutes hesitation, we were ready to get to work.

Written over two intensive years, Les Mi-sérables became a successful concept album already orchestrated by John Cameron be-fore hitting the stage in 1980 for a sell-out run under the direction of the French direc-tor Robert Hossein at the Palais des Sports in Paris.

Cameron Mackintosh can describe better than us how, on a dull and rainy afternoon in 1982 whilst listening to the French record, he was struck by the score of a “contradiction in terms:” that is to say a “French musical.”

The 1985 version at the Barbican was the result of a year-long collaboration with the elite of the British theatre: Trevor Nunn, John Caird, Herbert Kretzmer, John Napier, David Hersey, Andreane Neofitou and James Fenton. Since then the show has given ev-

erybody involved every imaginable satisfac-tion and ever unimaginable award, including 2009’s biggest surprise when Susan Boyle, an unknown Scottish lady with a life story which could have been a chapter of Les Mi-sérables, appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent,” turning Fantine’s song “I Dreamed a Dream” into an overnight worldwide YouTube hit.

The twenty-fifth anniversary produc-tion has new blood, with orchestrations by Chris Jahnke, Stephen Metcalfe and Stephen Brooker, and exciting cast—most of whom were just born when we were writing the show, direction by James Powell and Lau-rence Connor, and set design by Matt Kinley. Having watched rehearsals, we are over-whelmed by the unveiling before our eyes of the young, enthusiastic team’s new vision

of the work, a really exciting version of the redemption of Jean Valjean.

Based on the drawings of Victor Hugo, the look of this new production, more than ever, cap-tures the meaning of the foreword to the novel: “As long as one man on earth will still be suffer-ing from hunger or misery …a book like this may not be useless.” n

Les Misérables 25th anniversary Produc-tion at the Fisher theatre March 22–april 3. Tickets are on sale now at the Fisher Theatre box office, charge by phone (800) 982-2787 or at Ticketmaster.com. Groups of twelve or more email [email protected] (sub-ject line Les Miz) or call (313) 871-1132.

Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, Les Misérables is an epic story about the survival of the human spirit. Cameron

Mackintosh’s new twenty-fifth anniversary production continues to showcase the origi-nal music by Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer from the French text by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel. In addition to “I Dreamed a Dream,” it in-cludes a host of memorable songs including “On My Own,” “Stars,” “Bring Him Home,” “Do You Hear the People Sing?,” “One Day More,” “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables,” and “Master Of The House.”

The all new production of Les Misérables features new staging and reimagined scen-ery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. “Over the years I have seen many successful but visually different productions, so it has been exciting to draw inspiration from the brilliant drawings and paintings of Victor Hugo himself,” said Mackintosh. “After all these years, I’m delighted the audience for this show is bigger and younger than ever before.”

In celebration of its twenty-fifth anniver-sary, Les Misérables made theatrical history with three different productions in London at the same time: the original version, still play-ing to packed houses at the Queen’s Theatre, the new production at the Barbican, where the show premiered, and a celebratory con-

cert at The O2 Arena that was presented in over 500 cinemas throughout the U.S.

Seen by nearly 60 million people world-wide in forty-two countries and in twenty-one languages, Les Misérables is undisput-edly one of the world’s most popular musicals ever written. Cameron Mackintosh is cur-rently developing a film of Les Misérables with Working Title and Universal. n

Already known for bringing the big-gest Broadway shows to Detroit, the beautiful Fisher Theatre is now

shining the spotlight on groups at the Spot-light Room, the new onsite location for pre-show dining and receptions in the theatre’s lower lobby.

With a private bar, restroom, and din-ing options, the Spotlight Room opened in September with west Side Story and caters to groups of up to 30 people looking for an added level of excitement with each show. Exclusive and elegant, the room is avail-able prior to and after performances and is located on the theatre’s lower level near the women’s lounge. From light hors d’oeuvres and cocktails to dinner or lunch before the show, the Spotlight Room is currently tak-ing reservations for groups attending burn the floor, Les Misérables, Mamma Mia and Chicago.

Andiamo Riverfront has joined the Fisher Theatre as the exclusive caterer for the Spot-light Room’s inaugural year. Luncheon and dinner menus have been carefully selected from Andiamo’s banquet and catering pro-grams to provide Fisher Theatre groups with a wide variety of options from exquisite hors d’oeuvres to light luncheon sandwiches. “We looked at every kind of group that attends shows at the Fisher and created a menu to fit all of them, from upscale corporate clients, to our senior groups. The response from the first groups using the room has been phe-nomenal.” stated Scott Myers, Director of Corporate Sales & Marketing.
