The Burn Center at StraubThe Burn Center at Straub has met the unique needs of burn patients for almost 30 years. It is the only burn unit in Hawai‘i and the Pacific Region.

Patients in the Burn Center receive outstanding personalized attention, delivered through our multidisciplinary team approach. Director Robert W. Schulz, MD, and David Cho, MD, are both certified by the American Burn Association. All physicians and nurses in the unit are Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) certified providers. They’re also burn care instructors, and train other clinical staff at Straub and other hospitals in burn care.

In addition to this core medical staff, Straub’s multidisciplinary approach includes many specialists to help patients recover:

• Physical and occupational therapists

• Social workers

• Specialized nursing staff

• Psychologists & behavioral health specialists

• Vocational rehabilitation therapists

• Dietician

• Pharmacist

• Operating room nurses and technicians

• Palliative care specialists

• Chaplain

Comprehensive CarePatients of the Burn Center have access to a multidisciplinary health care team who provide both inpatient and outpatient care. This includes severe wound care and rehabilitation services such as physical and occupational therapy, psychological counseling and other support. Straub provides seamless coordination of these services in order to provide the best patient experience possible, from the initial acute setting to outpatient rehabilitation and long-term follow-up care.

Since its establishment in 1983 under the leadership of Dr. Robert Schulz and Dr. James Penoff, the Burn Center has treated almost 1,000 patients admitted for life-saving and limb-preserving procedures, intricate wound assessment and other specialized treatment. Each year, the Center provides state-of-the-art burn and wound care for victims of thermal, electrical and chemical burns, as well as severe skin diseases such as necrotizing fasciitis, toxic epidermal necrolysis, road rash, and any condition that requires skin grafting.
