Build Up Rate
The Build Up Rate or BUR is the rate of change in inclination.
The calculation is:
BUR = Change in inclination / Course Length
BUR = I / CL
It is measures in degrees per unit length. Commonly
degrees per 100ft
degrees per 30m

Build Up Rate
Example:
Survey 1 = 22 Inc., Survey 2 = 29 Inc., Course length 63
BUR = (I2 - 11)/CL x 100 = (29 - 22) / 63 x 100 = 11.1 / 100
BUR can have values that are positive for build and
negative for drop.
When there is no change of Azimuth BUR has the same value
as DLS.

Turn Rate
The Turn Rate is the rate of change of direction (Azimuth).
The calculation is:
TR = Change in direction / Course Length
TR = A / CL
It is measures in degrees per unit length. Commonly
degrees per 100ft
degrees per 30m

Turn Rate
Example:
Survey 1 = 324 Az, Survey 2 = 333 Az, Course length 60
TR = (A2 - A1)/CL x 100 = (333 - 324) / 60 x 100 = 15 / 100
TR can have values that are positive for clockwise and
negative for anti-clockwise turn
When the well is horizontal TR has the same value as DLS.

Dogleg
Dogleg is the measurement of deviation of the wellbore
It is a uniform measurement regardless of inclination or direction
DL has positive values only
DL = cos-1[sin I1 sin I2 cos(A2 - A1) + cos I1 cos I2 ]
You are not required to remember this equation
