Big Idea: Precision Lines, Rays, Angles

Enduring Understandings Essential Questions

Objects can be described using their geometric attributes.

Line segments and rays are sets of points that describe parts of a line.

Angles are formed by two intersecting lines or rays with a common endpoint.

Polygons can be described and classified by their sides and angles

How do you draw and identify various types of lines? How do you identify and compare angles? How are lines, rays, and angles related? Which attributes combine to classify various polygons?

Bundle Performance Task(s) The city engineers need help from your class. In teams of two or three, the students are tasked with developing a new city called Hoosierville. Your city plans must include, but are not limited to, the following requirements: • 4 streets that are parallel to each other • 1 highway that is perpendicular to the 4 parallel streets • 1 avenue that intersects at least 2 streets but is not perpendicular to them • 3 rectangular buildings, 4 square buildings, two trapezoidal buildings • 2 rectangular basketball courts • All parts must be labeled with original names • A playground that has at least one acute angle and one obtuse angle included within the design of the playground As an extension: Use Google Maps or Google Earth on the ipad to research the design of a city. Observe how the city engineers incorporated different kinds of lines, angles, and shapes within the planning of the city. Provide examples and an explanation of your findings.
