COMMANDERS REPORT
Here it is August again seems like time is just flying by. Soon the snow birds will be coming back and
we know we will welcome them home again. The business in the lounge and pavilion will get back to
normal, not that it has not been good thanks to all of the good people that we have. Looking forward
to the Car Show in September, see Posters in glass cabinet—should be a blast. Also don’t forget the
NVHS Stand Down—George and his crew will need volunteers and all the help they can get---
Remember it is the American Legion Family helping our Veterans!
I hope everyone bought tickets for the Bar in a Basket that has been put together; it is one of the best
that I have seen. It will be gone by the time this letter comes out, but I just want to thank Lisa, Jo and
everyone else that has worked on the Moore Oklahoma Benefit. Just a late add on, congratulations to
Jim Williamson who won the Bar in a Basket and to everyone that worked the Benefit. It was a fun,
very hot day but they rose about $2200 + school supplies for the children of Moore Oklahoma.
Let us not forget that the new school year is coming and the Unit #1 Auxiliary will be having their
school supply drive in high gear. Let us all pitch in and help them along with the children of our area
schools.
For God and Country. Commander Ed Spence

NEWS FROM THE S.A.L
Hello fellow S.A.L members. It's August and that means it’s hot outside. So let’s get hot on trying to reach our membership goal of 100% before the other Squadrons in District 12. Remember that if you renew before Sept 31st you will save $5.00. We had a real good S.A.L meeting in July. There are still seats available for you to join us. Don't be shy, come out and get involved. The meetings are the first Monday of the month at 7pm. The S.A.L. Meat Shoot is Saturday August 3rd. We can always use support for that as well. Keep a lookout for the S.A.L. Shade Tree Bands next event out at the Pavillion. Flyers will be posted.

ALR NEWS
Well we got our meeting in with our new officers after cancelling July 6th meeting until the 13th. (Sorry to the people without computers that didn't get the word) We got our new Director (Sheri Helmer) installed, welcome Sheri. Some changes that we voted on was to change our meeting day and time to 12:00 pm noon on the same day of Bike Day, the second Saturday of the month. This will be until the weather runs us back inside, maybe when the time changes in the fall? We are installing a window at the pavilion to keep the rain off of the bar. A big thinks to Jerry & Shirley Harley for their kind donation, our bar is in need of some work and needs to be water proof. If you have the talent and know how we can use your help. I'm sure the post would be willing to help out with some of the cost? We voted on a Road Capt. to coordinate our rides whenever we have one, Tony Mirabella will be the Road Capt. planning rides, routes, poker runs etc. We voted to have a raffle starting July 28 for a big screen TV; we should be able to start selling tickets after the 27th. We need something to keep our budget afloat so that when a fellow Veteran comes upon hard times we might be able to help them in some way. Our Bike Day went well this month, we made some money from the ammo donated by Ed and thanks to Tom for taking care of the 50/50 drawing at our meeting. All the people that helped with Bike Day--Thank you. Next Meeting will be Aug. 10th at 12:00 noon with Bike Day starting at 2:00pm, come on out and voice your opinion we need your input. COLOR GUARD NEWS
No news this month, Linda & Pete have been on vacation. Our Moto: Visibility, visibility, visibility For Veterans, Country and Flag Thank you for all your support. Unit 1 Color Guard Cmdr. Auxiliary Membership Report
We're getting started on all of our programs for the 2013-2014 Auxiliary Year. Each and every one of you can help in some way to support the programs and our active military, other veterans as well as our local communities. Come to the meetings the second Wednesday of each month at 7 PM. You will be surprised how enjoyable it is to work the programs.
Right now we are doing the annual SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE to assist under privileged students in our local elementary schools. There are lots of good buys now on school supplies, so drop some off at the Post 1 in the barrel by the front door. Also, you can collect pull tabs from cans, Boxtops For Education coupons on many foods, Campbell’s soup can labels, and Kool Aid Jammer labels. We collect and turn them over to schools so they can get money for the schools.
Another way to help is to get your 2014 renewal fees in early. It's still $30 for seniors and $6 for Junior’s. Renewal notices will be mailed in early September, but feel free to drop off a check or cash with the bartenders and you will be given a receipt. I will get your new cards in the mail to your address on file. IF YOU HAVE MOVED, PLEASE LEAVE YOUR CURRENT ADDRESS SO YOU GET YOUR CARD BACK. I will complete the address update so you get your ALA magazine, renewal reminders and other Auxiliary mailings.
Whatever you do, just know that all your support for the various Legion Family functions is appreciated and we are glad to see everyone come out for the activities at Post 1.
Donna Shearer, Unit #1 Membership Chairperson
AUXILIARY NEWS—PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
July 27th was a big day at Post 1 for the benefit of Moore Alabama school children with lots and lots of
people stepping up to support this very worthy cause. Way to go!
Holy Cow! September is around the corner. Thank God in Florida we don’t feel the fall coolness. But there are many school children who need our help with school supplies and warm jackets for when we do feel the coolness of winter. We are collecting school supplies in a large barrel located at the Post. Please pick some up and drop them in the barrel whenever you come in. Our Auxiliary members will distribute the supplies to the elementary schools in Titusville near the beginning of September for the children whose parents cannot afford to buy these much needed learning tools. Items needed: Pencils, erasers, pencils & sharpeners, note books, binders, construction paper, crayons, Elmer’s Glue, etc. You get the idea. If you used it in school, we need it for them. Please help us. God Bless You and Our Country, Cathie McMullin, Unit
#1 President

Veteran Views
Senior executives in the Veterans Affairs Department could face a 25 percent pay cut unless
they substantially reduce the number of disability claims backlogged for four months or
longer by next summer. That provision was included in the 2014 Military Construction-VA
funding bill passed by the House 4 JUN.
The House adopted an amendment by Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA) which would limit the pay of
Senior VA officials to 75 percent of their salary from July 1, 2014, to Sept. 30, 2014, “unless as
of July 1, 2014, the percentage of disability compensation claims that are more than 125 days
old is less than or equal to 40 percent.” On 3 JUN VA reported claims backlogged 125 days or
longer totaled 569,418 -- 66.2 percent of all 860,203 pending claims.
It’s not the only provision targeting department executives’ compensation: VA Senior Executive
Service Personnel won’t get any bonuses in 2014 if the House bill becomes law, as the result of
another amendment by Rep. Keith Rothfus (R-PA). The House bill -- if it becomes law after a
Conference with the Senate -- also contains language that derails Defense Department plans,
announced by Secretary Chuck Hagel last month, to develop its own electronic health record
based on commercial software. An amendment by John Culberson, R-Texas, required
Defense to develop an integrated electronic health record as defined in the Defense-VA Joint
Executive Council’s strategic plan for 2013 through 2015, which doesn’t leave the Pentagon any
wiggle room to pursue a solo strategy.

When Unit #1 & The Committee first started with the idea of doing a fund raiser for the children of Moore Oklahoma’s 2 schools, Briarwood & Plaza Towers it was overwhelming with lots of ideas being passed around or suggested. Well we were very happy with Lisa Commer taking the reins to arrange for the final events, and from support of all the people & organizations donating, attending, working and purchasing. The Chinese Raffle was a time consuming event but fun with all the different items to bid on—some of us won the items we wanted and others won a lot of food (Todd). The Bar in a Basket, which most of the bottles were donated by Todd Kohler –thank you very much-- was won by Jim Williamson---we all want to know when the party is Jim? Congratulations! The Karaoke Contest was a big hit with the children & adults, it was great seeing the children of the future getting out there and singing in front of people they didn’t know. Thank you to Sandy & Buck who donated their time for the contest, to Doc Holiday for donating music in the pavilion, to Jan Landers for playing with the children (like he does every day), to our wonderful face painter Anna, to Donna K. for the pudding shots, to Carol & the girls in the kitchen, to Judy Silvarilo and the ladies for the bake sale items, to Commander for being the runner, to the ladies manning the tables outdoors, and to Brad & Lou for Corn Hole game in the hot sun. If we forgot anyone we are very sorry, just realize we could not have done this without you and thank you from the bottom of our hearts. With all the donations, fund raisers and gifts we raised about $2,200 plus some school supplies. Everyone should be very proud of the support they gave and for helping other communities & children in need. Also thank you to EVERYONE that worked that day we could not have done it without your tireless help.
