Merchant accounts are marketed to merchants by two basic methods: either directly by the bank that will perform the processing or by an authorized agent for the bank directly registered with Visa and MasterCard as an ISO/MSP (Independent Selling Organization / Member Service Provider). Marketing details are by card issuers like Visa and MasterCard, and are enforced by various rules and fines.

Marketing by Banks A bank that has a merchant processing relationship with Visa and MasterCard,

also known as a member bank, can issue merchant accounts directly to merchants. In practice it is usually harder to obtain a merchant account directly through a bank than it is through an ISO/MSP, and fees may be somewhat higher.

To reduce risk, some banks limit approval to merchants in its geographical area, those with a physical retail storefront, or those that have been in business for 2 years or more. These limitations along with different customer focus motivate some banks to sponsor ISO/MSPs to do the marketing and customer support directly, leaving the bank to do the accounting and processing.

1. Merchant will fill out the Merchant Application form and the Confirmation page. Included with the signed application and confirmation page, they will also provide the Account Executive (AE) with a voided/canceled check. (See Submission Checklist)

2. You will then fax the completed application, confirmation page, submission checklist and voided/canceled check to FlashBanc Agent Support Services.(480-247-5209)

3. FlashBanc will then submit your Merchant’s paperwork to Underwriting for approval.

4. Upon receiving an approval, FlashBanc will the complete what’s called a “file build” with the processor to ensure that all information related to that merchants account is correct.

5. Once the file is built, a time must be scheduled with the Merchant to perform the “download” to their existing terminal which will convert their service.

6. You or the Merchant can perform the download. The download is completed at the terminal unless they are using a virtual terminal. You must call the “Help Desk” (number will be provided) so they can download the necessary information directly to the Merchants credit card terminal. They will walk you through the process over the phone. The entire download takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Once completed, the process is complete. Always run a test transaction on the terminal to make sure everything is working properly.

A Merchant Account has a variety of fees, some periodic, others charged on a per-item or percentage basis. Some fees are set by the merchant account provider, but the majority of the per-item and percentage fees are passed through the merchant account provider to the credit card issuing bank according to a schedule of rates called interchange fees, which are set by Visa and MasterCard.

For one example of how interchange functions, imagine a consumer making a $100 purchase with a credit card. For that $100 item, the retailer would get

approximately $98. The remaining $2, known as the merchant discount

and fees, gets divided up. about $1.75 would go to the card issuing bank (defined as

interchange) $0.18 would go to Visa or MasterCard association (defined as

Interchange Plus Also known as Pass-Through billing is the most transparent way to be billed

because it clearly lays out what VISA and MasterCard are charging the Merchant. As an Account Executive you will decide which method of billing best suits you’re Merchants.

3-Tier Most popular pricing method and the simplest system for most merchants. In

3-Tier Pricing, the merchant account provider groups the transactions into 3 groups (tiers) and assigns a rate to each tier based on a criterion established for each tier.

Not to be confused with a refund, which is simply a merchant refunding a transaction. Merchant's processing bank is 100% responsible for all the transactions that
