29TH Sunday of Ordinary Time October 21, 2012

VATICAN II AT 50: INSPIRED AWAKENINGVATICAN II AT 50: HUMAN DIGNITY

One of the most important insights to emerge from the Council was the inalienable dignity of each humanperson as the cornerstone of Catholic social teaching. All of the Churchs work for justice and humandevelopment is rooted in this principle. Human persons are always to be respected, and never treated as ameans to an end, whether social, economic, or political. Because the God in whose image we are created is aTrinitarian God, a community of persons, we are social beings: our dignity is realized not just by focusing onindividual rights and freedoms, but by the many levels of belonging which mark us: for each of us belongs to afamily, a culture, a nation, to a global humanity. As well, we belong uniquely to God, who has called us togethein the Church to be his Body, his living presence in the world.

Two documents of the Council explicitly develop this theme. In the Declaration on Religious Freedom, Dignitatis Humanaewe read: This Vatican Council declares that the human person has a right to religious freedom. This freedom means that alpersons are to be immune from coercion, such that no one is to be forced to act in a manner contrary to his own beliefswhether privately or publicly, whether alone or in association with others, within due limits. The council further declares thatthe right to religious freedom has its foundation in the very dignity of the human person, as this dignity is known through therevealed word of God and by reason itself. This right of the human person to religious freedom is to be recognized in theconstitutional law whereby society is governed. It is to become a civil right. (DH #2)

The Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, Gaudium et Spes, begins with these stirring wordsThe joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of men and women of this age, especially those who are

poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties, of the followers of Christ.Indeed, nothing genuinely human fails to raise an echo in their hearts. In this text, addressed to all people ofgood will, the Church chooses a path of dialogue with the world. It affirms the dignity of each human personendowed with reason, conscience, and freedom. It affirms the commitment of the church to the cause of justiceand peace for all of humanity. It then addresses the various areas of our common life marriage and the family, culture, economic development, social and political life, the pursuit of peace in which the drama of humandignity and freedom is played out. Our faith does make a difference in the world!!.
