Kalinda Primary School’s Vision Statement A learning community with shared values, fostering a life-long love
of learning through meaningful experiences, to embrace a constantly changing society.
From the Principal…………..
ASSEMBLY CANCELLED NEXT MONDAY Due to a whole school Production rehearsal, our Assembly on Monday will be cancelled. All Pupil of the Week certificates will be held over until the following week.
TOURNAMENT OF MINDS
During this term, there are many activities going on around the school with our Production. Tournament of Minds (ToM) is also an important event for some of our Level 4 students. Preparation for ToM runs for six weeks at the beginning of Term 3. This year we have four teams in Tournament of Minds involving 28 children and the help and support of many adults. This program takes a lot of preparation as children have to work in teams of seven, solving complex problems in a very creative way. On Saturday 25
th August, all of these teams will perform at Swinburne Institute
of Technology, Lilydale Campus, in front of a group of judges and an audience of parents and supporters. Their presentations have to be no longer than 10 minutes, have to be performed within a specific space, using only props and costumes that children have made themselves with recycled materials. It is amazing what the children come up with working in these teams, together. The children recognise that each of them has different talents and working in a team can utilise these talents to their best advantage. Someone may be good at problem solving, another may be terrific at organising the team, someone else writes the scripts, others organise the costumes and props. The whole process teaches them a lot about responsibility and commitment to a task. Sandra Kitching, our past School Council President, along with Stuart McLean and our lovely Bryan Bennett, is organising Tournament of Minds this year. Sandra has been working with ToM for the past few years and we love having her back at the school working with us once again. Sandra has taken leave form her employment to assist us and we very much appreciate her support. Good luck to all our Tournament of Mind participants on Saturday.
WONDER IN ALICELAND PRODUCTION As I am off to India today with Anita Elliott and Ray Brookman, I wish everyone all the best for a wonderful Production. Parents, enjoy those wonderful moments which take your breath away. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

JAPANESE NEWS
HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR 2012 We are very fortunate to have an Intern arriving in late September to stay with our Kalinda families for 6 months. Her name is Mayumi Okazaki. She is a primary school teacher in Japan and, at present, is teaching in Port Macquarie, NSW. When Mayumi is here she will be teaching our Preps and Level 2 students. Mayumi would like to teach our students about Japanese cuisine, origami, Japanese poetry and traditional children’s games. We ask host families to provide a room and food for an intern. It is an intern’s responsibility to organize holidays. Host families like to share their weekends with the intern though. The intern pays a small weekly fee to the host family to help cover the cost to stay. Usually the children get exposed to Japanese culture and make a good lasting friendship. Previous interns still keep in touch with their host families. We would appreciate your support again for our International Internship Program. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please fill in this form and return it to the office as soon as possible Your Name: ________________________________________________________________ Contact Number: ___________________________ Your Child(ren)’s name(s): __________________________________________________________ Grade(s): _________________________________ How long would you be prepared to have Mayumi stay? ____________________________ What time of year would suit you? ____________________________________________________ Can Mayumi stay with you over the holidays?_______________________________________ Mayumi will be here from October 2012 until April 2013. A team of researchers (the BRAVE Team) at Griffith University and the University of Queensland is investigating internet-based programs for children suffering from social anxiety. Social Anxiety is extreme shyness, or fear of speaking or performing in front of others. The BRAVE Team is seeking children aged between 8 and 12 years to take part in an internet-based treatment study. The treatment program involves 12 online sessions for children and 8 online sessions for parents, which each session taking approximately an hour to complete. Families are charged a one-off fee of $120 to assist in covering treatment costs.
Families will also be asked to complete questionnaires and telephone interviews, but will receive a rebate of $25 in vouchers each time they complete a post-treatment assessment.
