The carillon system that has provided bell music for the past twenty years has broken down completely. We have signed a contract for a new system that, if we are lucky, should be installed in time for Christmas. It is an upgraded system both in the quality of the sound (digitalized), and also in its features – we will have the ability to toll bells at funerals, and also to peal bells at other times. The new system costs $6,900 if anyone would like to give a memorial gift or an end-of-the-year donation. New addresses of old friends:

Rev. Dailon Lisabet Rev. Charles Lana Saint Margaret’s Church Holy Family Church 6 Sussex Ave. 1 Lloyd Ave. Morristown, NJ 07960 Florham Park, NJ 07932

While preaching last Saturday at the 5:30 P.M. Mass, I made mention of Pope Francis’ 2015 visit to the United States and his address before a Joint Session of Congress, in which the Holy Father referenced four figures from American history. I spoke at length of one of the four, the American Catholic social activist and pacifist, Dorothy Day (1897-1980), the founder of the Catholic Worker Movement. What I did not know as I was preaching is that one of our parishioners had been asked just the previous week by the people responsible for advancing the Sainthood cause of Dorothy Day, to take on the responsibility of organizing and transcribing Day’s letters in preparation for the next phase of the canonization process. When she heard me mention Dorothy Day at length in my homily, she took it as a sign from God that she should say yes to the request. You never know. Always and everywhere . . . Father Rober to’s parish at Our Lady of Mercy, Whippany has an annual fund-raising concert by the Hanover Brass Ensemble on a Sunday of Advent. The ensemble consists of 65 brass and woodwind instruments. The church has great acoustics so that made quite a sound and the church was packed. As I was sitting in the back looking around, I noticed that there was a devotional area directly behind me on the back wall with three statues – Mary, Our Lady of Mercy, flanked by Saint Joseph and (who else) Saint Anthony of Padua.

Beginning tonight, the antiphons for the Magnificat Canticle at Evening Prayer move from a more general Advent theme to a more intense preparation for Christ’s coming. Taken as a group they are called the O Antiphons because, in chant, they each begin with a prolonged “O.” They form the verses for the popular Advent hymn, “O come, O come Emmanuel.” They can also be a good brief prayer starter for us during these last days of Advent. December 17 O Wisdom of our God, most high, guiding creation with power and love, Come to teach us the path of knowledge! December 18 O Leader of the House of Israel, giver of the law to Moses on Sinai, Come to rescue us with your mighty power! December 19 O Root of Jesse’s stem, sign of God’s love for all his people. Come to save us without delay! December 20 O key of David, opening the gates of God’s eternal Kingdom, Come and free the prisoners of darkness! December 21 O radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice, Come and shine on those who dwell in darkness And in the shadow of death! December 22 O king of all the nations and keystone of the Church, Come and save man whom you formed from the dust! December 23 O Emmanuel, our King and giver of law; Come to save us, Lord our God! God bless you all, Father Ray

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

First Reading: Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10 Isaiah tells us that when Christ comes, the weak will be made strong, the deaf will hear, the blind will see, and, above all, “sorrow and mourning will flee.” Second Reading: James 5:7-10 As the farmer waits patiently through winter and spring for the “yield of the soil” so, too, must we wait patiently for the coming of the Messiah. Gospel: Matthew 11:2-11 While in prison, John sends a messenger to Jesus to ask, “Are you He who is to come or do we look for another?” Jesus replies by citing the miracles he has performed for the blind, the deaf, and the crippled. He concludes by identifying John as the messenger He has sent to prepare the way

FAITH FORMATION

Please Help Needed!

We need help putting the lights on and setting up the church Christmas trees. If you can help for an hour or so please join us in the church on Monday, December 16 at 7:00 PM Frank Abate - Art and Environment Committee.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO REGISTER IN A PARISH?

Registration is the official way we join a parish communi-ty. Many people think that because they attend a particular parish they automatically belong. At times young adults who have moved away for years think they are still signed up under their parents. But membership requires signing up, formally enrolling yourself in a parish. Registration is a commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social and ministerial activities of your parish. Your registration affects the parish in many ways. Census numbers can determine how many priests are assigned to a church, what benefits and obligations the community has to the diocese, and how Masses, confessions and devotions are planned and scheduled. Registration shows you belong. It is also necessary for certain benefits, like scheduling sacraments, obtaining sponsor certificates, and getting do-nation statements for taxes. Most importantly, it lets the parish count on you, to call on you to assist in its mission. Registering in your parish is a statement of faith and confi-dence in the life and work of your parish. To register please contact the rectory office 973-427-1478

This Sunday, December 15th at 4PM. The Parish Choir and Youth Choir will lead the Singing in Our Annual Lessons and Carols Service. The Music of Burt, Schutte, Rutter, Willcocks, and Williams will be featured along with Advent and Christmas carols loved by all. Please plan to be with us as we celebrate all the good works done in our community by the Hawthorne Ecumenical Council and by our Parish. It’s a most fitting way to take some time off from the Hustle and Bustle of the season and truly usher in the Advent and Christmas Season.
