BY THE WAY . . . Next Sunday, June 23, is the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ – Corpus Christi – and once again, Bishop Serratelli has asked us to participate in the annual Corpus Christi Food Drive to assist in stocking the various food pantries operating across the diocese, including our own here at Saint Anthony’s. The summer months are difficult – even crisis – times for food pantries because of a double dynamic that takes place over the summer, especially for the poor. First, because children are not in school over the summer, many children, who might be otherwise fed by various school lunch programs, are entirely dependent on their own family resources. So, the drain on food pantries increases over the summer. At the same time, many of the groups that regularly supply food pantries (classes, schools, teams, etc.) do not meet over the summer. Think about it for a minute. The three major holidays that encourage donations to food pantries – Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter – all occur during the school year. There is nothing about Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Labor Day that says “give to a food pantry!” So food pantries experience the greatest demand on their services at the same time that their food sources go on vacation. This year as in the past, our parish has been asked to donate instant oatmeal, farina, and shampoo. (We share the oatmeal – farina designation with Saint Paul’s, Prospect Park. The other “shampoo” parish is Immaculate Heart of Mary in Wayne). If you are able to help feed the poor, bring these items to any of the Masses on the weekend of June 22-23 and leave them in the sanctuary area in front of the church. There was a mistake in last week’s bulletin. I inadvertently identified last Tuesday as the final Novena Day. This Tuesday, June 18, is the ninth and final Tuesday for the annual Saint Anthony’s Novena. The final service, beginning at 7:30 P.M. will include the Veneration of the Relic of Saint Anthony. This coming Thanksgiving Week our parish church will celebrate its 85th anniversary. Although in use since September 1932, the church was formally dedicated by Bishop Thomas J. Walsh of Newark on November 25, 1934. The period between World War I and World War II was a time of beautiful church construction in New Jersey. The combination of greater affluence for Catholics, and a heightened interest in our own historical and artistic past, led many of the older parishes to replace smaller wooden structures with some of the most magnificent Catholic churches in the Garden State. Our own church, built in the Italian Romanesque style, fits right into that movement. The coming of World War II brought an abrupt halt to church construction, and when the war was over, Catholics began to embrace two new styles of church construction. I thought, as a way of commemorating our beautiful church’s anniversary, that I would sponsor a series of three evening tours of the church, highlighting the iconography, or symbolic decoration of our parish church. We see all these symbols all the time, but do we appreciate what they try to convey to us about our faith. I thought the summer time might be a more appropriate time for this because of the longer hours of daylight.

So, on three coming Tuesday nights at 7:30 P.M. – please consider joining me for A Tour of Saint Anthony’s Church: June 25 – the Windows July 2 – the Exterior Decoration July 9 – the Interior Decoration The Pastoral Visit of Bishop Serratelli, announced in last week’s bulletin for July 13, has had to be postponed. (The erection of a new altar at Saint Clare’s Church, Clifton has bumped us off the calendar because a new altar cannot be used until it is formally dedicated by the Bishop. Hence, the Bishop needs the Saturday night Mass that weekend to celebrate that dedication). Our visit will be rescheduled for a later date. Speaking of the Bishop – Bishop Serratelli reached his 75th birthday on April 18. As is required of all bishops by Canon Law, he submitted his resignation that day to the Holy Father. The ordinary process is that the resignation is not accepted until the Holy See is ready to announce the appointment of the new bishop. (This past week a new bishop was announced for the Syracuse, New York Diocese – fifty weeks after the current bishop submitted his letter of resignation). As of today, there are eight American dioceses that are vacant – either through the death or transfer of their bishop (Alexandria, LA, Anchorage, AS, Atlanta, GA, Gary, IN, Helena, MT, Rapid City, SD, Shreveport, LA, and Wheeling-Charleston, WV), and another eight, including ourselves, whose bishop has reached 75 (Beaumont, TX, Birmingham, AL, Brooklyn, NY, Des Moines, IA, Paterson, NJ, Sioux Falls, SD, Stamford, CT, and Wilmington, DE), and another three (Belleville, IL, Boston, MA, and Saint Louis, MO) whose bishops will turn 75 by the end of this month. The process of selection tries to be as thorough as possible, taking many factors into account. Given the current backlog, we may be waiting for a while. Meantime, we can assist the process with our prayers. All glory to You, O Lord our God

our eternal shepherd and guide. In your faithfulness, Grant to the Diocese of Paterson A shepherd whose watchful care and kindly zeal Will be a constant witness of faithfulness and love To the people entrusted to his care. In your love for us May he strive to live more and more each day With holiness of life and heroic virtue, So that he will lead your holy people in all truth By being Christ’s heart of mercy Voice of hope, and mind of justice. Prepare him, we humbly pray, to fill our minds and hearts With the truth of the Gospel, The power of the sacraments, And the desire to build up your holy Church. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen God bless you all, Father Ray

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY First Reading: Proverbs 8:22-31 God created Wisdom before he created the earth or the skies. This spirit stood beside God every day until the earth was complete, then "found delight in the people of the earth." This indi-cates that the spirit of wisdom was later personified by Jesus. Second Reading: Romans 5:1-5 Paul says that we are now at peace with God through our faith in Jesus. We also hope to see the glory of God. This hope will not leave us disappointed because of the love God has shown in sending us the Holy Spirit. Gospel: John 16:12-15 Jesus tells the disciples that when he leaves them, a Spirit will help guide them to the truth. This Spirit will announce what he hears from Jesus, rather than speaking on his own. Every-thing God has also belongs to Jesus, which is why those things announced by the Spirit will actually come from Jesus.

SOCIAL SERVICES

LIGHTHOUSE "BABY BOTTLE BOOMERANG" CAMPAIGN

Each year there are more than 44,000 women in New Jersey without the support to choose life. This spring our parish is participating in the Wayne-based Lighthouse Pregnancy Re-source Center's "Baby Bottle Boomerang" campaign. This campaign is not only a prac-tical, easy way for us to assist Lighthouse in its mission to provide valuable life support to parents in need; it also helps spread the word about Lighthouse’s free services. Lighthouse Pregnancy Resource Center serves women, men and teens at-risk for, or facing, an un-planned pregnancy or related concern. We asked that you return your donation this Fa-ther's Day weekend (June 15 / 16). If you for-got to bring it with you, please bring it to church with you next weekend or drop it off at the rectory during business hours. Thank you! NEED TRANSPORTATION? THE MOST HOLY TRINITY “I have much more to tell you but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming… Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I have told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.” The great celebration of the Trinity calls us to learn, listen and live in the presence of the creating Father, the redeeming Son, moved by the Spirit. We reflect upon a mystery we cannot fully explain or understand, but worship a loving God who is One, but Three Persons. We profess our faith in this mystery every time we pause and bless ourselves. We speak our faith every Sunday when we recite the creed. Throughout history countless attempts have been made to help us understand a mystery beyond our comprehension, yet the scriptures reveal the presence of our Triune God. What can I do about it? Two common examples might help. As you look at your watch (not a digital one) did you ever wonder how it works? As you put your key to unlock a door, did you ever try to understand the mystery how it works? Today we reflect upon the God who loves us, knows us, supports us, and we struggle to say ‘thank you’ Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Gospel Today The Most Holy Trinity | John 16:12-15 < K D’S >

KORNER Jesus speaks of the Spirit of Truth at the Last Supper. He prepares the disciples for the coming of the Spirit, the Advocate, who will remain with them when Jesus is with the Father in Heaven. They are all One, the Trinity, so what the disciples hear from the Spirit will come from Jesus and the Father.

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
