BULLETIN

Dear Parents: Let us pray for

Our Sisters and Brothers around the World affected by acts of Senseless Violence.

The new term begins with a positive spirit even if the skies are grey and the air is chilled and we are saddened by the violent deaths affecting communities around the world.

We are pleased to welcome two new members of staff. Taking Mrs Andrew’s Maths classes is Mrs Anam Dhanji. Mrs Catherine Clarke takes over the role of Maths Coordinator for Semester 2 2016. We also welcome Mr Sachin Vij who will be our IT support person while Amber Kaur is on maternity leave. It is good to see Mrs Concetta Sossi back with us from her Long Service Leave. There is, as always, plenty happening. Yesterday a contingent of lucky Year 11s left Adelaide for the annual excursion to Canberra. On Thursday the Year 12s begin their Trial Exams. This week is a big one for our Year 10s also as they hand up their Personal Project, the culmination of the MYP Program. Please note on our front page the date of the Exhibition of work for parents later this term.

Jubilee Fete – Choosing your Niche for 2016The talent pool in our parent community is vast. Your backgrounds, your current job, your professional responsibilities equip you to take an active part in in one of the many roles on offer within our 2016 Fete project. So, if you are a new parent in the school you might be asking just what St. Dominic’s is expecting of you and why. Our aim is to improve your daughter’s educational facilities. Your support of the current P&F Chocolate Drive will be another source of funds for facilities.

Rest in Peace Our prayers and condolences are with the following families who have lost loved ones recently.

The Pauley Family in the recent passing of Leah Pauley loved daughter of staff member Briony Pauley and Greg (deceased), and granddaughter of Colleen Dennehy former staff member, and sister to Sam and Rachael.

The Cornish Family in the recent passing of Marian Cornish, loved Mother and Mother in Law of Ian and Kinga and Nanna to Cassie Yr 11, Brittany Yr. 8 and Isabella Yr 5.

St Dominic’s Priory College

Welcome back everyone to what is already looking like a very busy Term 3 for us all. We hope that you all

enjoyed a relaxing break with your children. The change in routine is enjoyed by many. The girls were all happily coming into school and were rugged up for the wild weather we have been experiencing. We are all looking forward to the many different learning experiences which include: St Dominic’s Day celebrations, Book Week, Science Week, school performances, Literacy and Numeracy Breakfast just to name a few.

Primary ShowcaseIn the last week of Term 2 the parents were entertained with class performances at our informal Arts Showcase. There were a range of acts that showcased the musical talent of our girls. Parents obviously enjoyed the performances and were very engaged when viewing their daughter’s artwork. We were grateful for the positive responses that we received as a lot of effort is put in by the students and teachers. We thank Helen and Karen from Year 6 for hosting the evening.

Independence DayThank you for your support for Independence Day. The students have been excellent. This term Independence Day is on a Thursday.

Sustainability in the Primary SchoolThere are many students who are actively looking at the impact of rubbish and waste in our school. The Year 6 Sustainability Group are keen for as many students as possible to have ‘Nude Food Friday’. They would like all students to reduce the packaging in their recess and lunch. Your support with this would be greatly appreciated.

Children’s UniversityIf your daughter is in Year 4, 5 or 6 and is a member of the Children’s University they will

need to check the notice board and see what activities they would like to be involved in this term. They will also need to check the website www.childrensuniversity.com.au and see what else is offered in and around Adelaide. All passports will be stamped on a Friday morning. A reminder that they will need 30 hours to be able to graduate this year and please check that passports are filled out, dated and the time spent included.

Australian Maths CompetitionSeveral students from Year 3 to Year 6 will sit for the annual maths competition this Thursday. The test will be completed in class time. If your daughter is competing, you would have received a letter. It is challenging and they will certainly be getting ‘In the Pit’.

Primary Sports NewsThis week the Year 5 and 6 students have been learning about the sport of Touch Football and have had sessions with Touch SA. The girls have enjoyed this experience and many girls are interested in trialling to represent St Dominic’s in the Catholic Touch Football Competition on September 8th this term.

The R-3 students will be involved in the Footsteps Dance Program on Thursday mornings in weeks 1-5. All Year 2 and 3 students must wear sports uniform on Thursdays in addition to their usual PE day.

On Wednesday, 10 Year 6/7 students will be participating in the SAPSASA Knockout Basketball Carnival at Wayville with Mr Mortimer. Good luck to the girls involved and we know they will have lots of fun.

Science and Engineering ExcursionOn the 6th of July Ms. Clarke’s Year Nine Maths Class went to Flinders University to participate in the Science and Engineering Challenge. The Challenge mainly focuses on the aspects of Science and Engineering that students may not usually see in their classrooms. The students were assigned into teams of three or four, which allocated what activities they did for the day. Among the many fun and educational activities that our school participated in was Bridge Building, where the team had to build a bridge which was both light but strong. Another one of the activities was Grasping at Straws, where the team had to make a bionic hand out of straws, string and other materials, then use it to pick up various objects. St. Dominic’s came third overall out of seven schools in the Challenge. The whole day was enjoyable and all students participated well.
