Dear Parents,

The ongoing journey to justice for and reconciliation with First Australians is uppermost in our minds in the Reconciliation Week 2017 when we are marking at least two important anniversaries. The first in 1967 marks the 50th anniversary of the time when more than 90% of Australians voted to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal People. The second is the release in 1997 of the Bringing Them Home Report documenting the suffering of the Stolen Generations. Our thoughts and prayers are this week with the gathering of indigenous Australians in Uluru to discuss a way forward towards new hope in the way that they see is most productive.

The importance of failure in the learning process was the focus of an exceptional seminar presented by the well-known educational leader Martin Westwell here in Adelaide last night. “Productive failure” is not something we associate as a central part of the learning process. And yet the research presented clearly shows that when students are encouraged to talk about what they don’t know, they learn more successfully. We were challenged to see that the growth mindset is encouraged in the process of “getting it wrong.” When failures become motivating or interesting, failure is a powerful part of the learning process. The link between students accepting or learning from failure was linked to the attitude of the parent. A daughter or son who understands a parent as more focussed on learning, rather than on performance, will also see that failure is one stage in their learning, and a productive one.

Welcoming MYP educators to St. Dominic’sWhen St. Dominic’s first became an aspirant in the IB Middle Years Programme we were offered hospitality in other Adelaide schools as we became familiar with the framework of this internationally recognised learning program. On Thursday afternoon and evening we will have the opportunity of reciprocating the assistance we have received in hosting about 100 MYP educators from Schools in Adelaide including our own attend sessions designed for upskilling of staff in all learning areas. I would like to thank

MYP Coordinator Aurora Reid and Curriculum Deputy Rita Shepherd for their leadership in this event and Katherine Hudson for her service in hospitality.

GALA DAY 2017Students and staff and our parent guests all enjoyed the opportunity at last Friday’s Gala Day to enjoy community in a very different way in the buying and selling for a good cause, in the talent on display in the Primary and Secondary Talent Quests and in the wide ranging costumed response to decades of the 20th century. Well done to all and special thanks to the Student Representative Council for their leadership under the guiding and planning hand of Ms Muriel Noujaim, Deputy Student Wellbeing. The phootgraphs on this page and inside the Bulletin say it all.

Walking for Love and Walking for PeaceWe are proud of the practical support shown by our Year 10s who took part in the Annual Walk for Love in aid of the Mary Potter Foundation on last Sunday morning. In the afternoon half of them came on to take part in the Marian Procession Walk for Peace.

Primary News from Ms. Cate O’Leary Primary School Coordinator

Literacy: Self Monitoring When your child first learns to read, teachers and parents support them in monitoring their comprehension and accuracy. As they progress, they need to begin to monitor what they read themselves. The author of the blog ‘Catching Readers Before They Fall’ stresses that: “From the very earliest reading experiences that we have with children, we need to send the message that reading is supposed to make sense and that it’s their job to be checking that their reading IS making sense.” As with all of the other comprehensions strategies, your support in making this process explicit is essential as well as talking about what we can do if they are struggling. Tips include:• Questioning your child about what the book might be

about and activating prior knowledge• Asking them to reread if it didn’t sound right• Encouraging them to question when they are unsure of

the meaning of the text• Discussing and looking up new vocabulary – try to use

new words in other contexts• Talking about the content of the book and any parts which

didn’t make senseEncourage your child to think about what strategies they can use when they are struggling to make meaning from the text (reread, use the pictures, look up key words) so that they can use these in their independent reading time.

As part of our unit on Catholic Social Teachings, Year 6 students have been busy making soup for Fred’s Van. Students selected the soup they would like to make and in house groups they have started cooking. This has been made possible through the generous support of the Year 6 families who are donating ingredients

“Ambition: There’s no one route to success, so keep your options open”

GALA DAY: Gala Day was a great success. The girls all enjoyed the flexibility of the theme and we had many original ideas. The fashion and talent sections were a highlight for many. We were all pleased to have fine weather and a great day was had by all.

THURSDAY NIGHT NETBALL: Year 3/4 and 5/6 team results: we had 1 bye and 5 wins. Thank you to our coaches and scorers and great team members.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: We have had a very good response from our parents regarding independence day. We will start Independence Day this term on a Tuesday and will begin in Week 5. This is a day when parents drop their children off and they independently come to the classrooms. During the first few weeks we will have teachers outside of the school to reassure the girls. We appreciated the positive feedback from parents last year and know that the aim is for our girls to show that they can follow the class morning routines, check for notes, hand in homework and then socialise with their peers. It gives them a chance to develop a relationship with the teacher, develop trust, and develop a sense of responsibility and personal ownership of their belongings and helps support their resilience. As with last year the day will rotate each term. All Reception and new to the school families will receive a letter this week explaining the rational and benefits for your daughters behind this initiative. If you help with LAP or parent reading on a Tuesday, please follow what you normally do.

Year 7 AdventuresSA Water Workshop: Monday 15th May

The Year 7s took part in a workshop at SA Water about the filtration process of how water gets from rivers, dams, reservoirs and lakes to our taps at home. We learnt about how delicate and important water is to our environment and community, extending our knowledge of water.

Adelaide Oval Tour: Tuesday 16th MayAfter a small walk from school, we participated in a tour showcasing the depths and history of Adelaide Oval, including both cricket and football. The iconic scoreboard was a highlight for many of us and helped us understand the large effort behind the games. We learnt about the new and upgraded facilities that incorporated the original design of the Oval. Adelaide Oval is a great facility with heaps of ongoing history, it was definitely a worthwhile experience. What a ball! - Emma and Clarissa Yr7

Gala Day 2017Here at the College we pride ourselves on educating young women with a sense of compassion and an understanding of the importance for social justice. The 2017 Gala Day is an annual social justice initiative that saw us working as a community, to better the wider community. The weather was kind to us on Friday 19 May and this saw our students enjoying themselves as they ran food and games stalls, relished in the opportunity to share their individual gifts in the Talent Quest, and engage their creativity by the way of unique and low cost costumes which featured on the Fashion Parade stage. This all took place to raise awareness and funds for the following charities:

Orange Sky Laundry | Carrie’s Beanies for Brain CancerLittle Heroes Foundation | Christmas Party for Special Children

Dare 2 Dream FoundationThis year the St Dominic’s Priory College community raised an impressive $6,952 and money raised will be forwarded to the charities listed above.Congratulations to all SRCs (particularly the Year 12 SRC Executive), who were key in the success of this annual fundraiser. Thank you and well done to students, families and staff.
