Welcome to our Eucharistic Celebration

Happy November! As Daylight Saving Time ends and we come again to darker evenings, I always feel the looming pres-ence of winter. While it is still almost a month away, winter sneaks in and out this time of year as fall, like the reluctant leaves on the trees, continues to hang on. I hope you have been able to enjoy some of the gorgeous fall days we had following that very unusual duo of rainy days. God’s beauty abounds and is prayer itself: “the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12. This coming Tuesday, November 9, is the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, which is the Cathedral church of Rome, sometimes called the “Mother Church” for Catholicism because it is the par-ish church of the pope who is also Bishop of Rome. As we continue to grow the “Friends of the Cathe-dral” here at St. Thomas Aquinas, there will be a gathering in Righini Hall at 5:30pm on Tuesday for all who are interested in supporting the preservation of our wonderful, historic buildings: the church, rectory and school. We are moving forward in the process of being placed in the National Historic Registry. If you are interested, please come and hear more! Veterans Day is this coming Thursday, November 11. We will celebrate one mass that day at 9:00am with special prayer for all our veterans, both living and deceased. It is important to acknowledge the personal generosity of all those who choose to serve in the military, often without knowing where it will take them or what will be asked of them. For some, the cost is their very lives, for others their health and for all it is the precious gifts of time and energy, spent for the good of others. May God bless and watch over all our veterans, keep safe those in harm’s way and place gratitude in the hearts of all in our country whom they serve. As I’m writing this the Glasgow Climate Summit is underway and government leaders are wrestling over research and commitments around curbing the effects of global warming. We have seen locally the change of climate that is resulting. In his encyclical, Laudato Si, On Care for Our Common Home, Pope Francis raises awareness on this concern for all people, especially the poor who are most effected. Quoting Blessed Pope Paul VI, he refers to the ecological crisis as a “tragic consequence of unchecked human activity: ‘Due to an ill-considered exploitation of nature, humanity runs the risk of destroying and becoming in turn a victim of this degradation.’” Pope Paul VI wrote that in 1971. Thankfully, emphasis on this crisis continues to grow, though slowly. The Glasgow Summit again hopes to tackle the man-made part of this crisis and set some new standards to help curtail it. Let us pray with peoples world-wide for greater respect for all of creation and the strength and insight to make the changes we need to make. Part of the concluding prayer of Pope Francis’ encyclical is: “Triune Lord, wondrous community of infinite love, teach us to contemplate you in the beauty of the universe, for all things speak of you. Awaken our praise and thankfulness for every being that you have made. Give us the grace to feel profoundly joined to everything that is.”

Blessings to all this 32nd week in Ordinary Time!

FROM FATHER CHUCK

¡Feliz noviembre!
