Hollie Musmeci (Year 11 Abbey Family) has, throughout her school career, represented the Academy in every sport we have offered. Alongside this she has been a Sports Leader, achieving several leadership awards, coaching younger students and promoting and organising extra-curricular sport. Further adding to her ‘role model’ label, Hollie also studies GCSE PE as one of her options and is expected to achieve top honours as well as target grades (or above) in the rest of her exams.
Out of school Hollie represents Gillingham FC Centre of Excellence. As a result of her outstanding sporting acumen, finely balanced with her academic work ethic, she has most recently been accepted for a fully funded scholarship to the United States to play football and continue her sporting studies. We are so proud of Hollie and her achievements so far and we wish her all the best for her American adventure.

Friday 21 March 2014 Dear Parent/Carer Industrial Action: Wednesday 26 March 2014 You may be aware that a national strike has been called for on Wednesday 26 March 2014 by the National Union of Teachers (NUT). Your child’s health and safety is of paramount importance to us, and having carried out a risk assessment and staff consultation, it will be necessary for us to operate a partial closure for the day. The Academy will therefore only be open to Year Groups 10, 11, 12 and 13. Years 10 and 11 will be based at the East Site for the day, following a bespoke programme of English and Maths intervention. Travel for Year 11 students will be provided from the West Site to the East Site as normal with a return journey at the end of the school day. Travel will also be available for Year 10 students from the West Site to the East Site with a return journey at the end of the school day. If your child requires transport on the day, please ensure they arrive at the West Site for the coach to leave promptly at 8:15am. Years 12 and 13 will undertake self-study/revision on the West Site. We will be closed to all other Year Groups. We always take every reasonable step to remain open to all Year Groups and do not take the decision to close the Academy lightly. The aim of industrial action is to cause disruption and the Academy, students and parents/carers are all affected by this. World War I Commemoration
Oasis Academy Isle of Sheppey was selected in October 2013 to represent the United Kingdom in the international No Limits Project to commemorate the centenary of World War One. The Project was initiated with a visit from a professional choreographer and a professional composer from Germany who worked collaboratively with students for one week in workshops. The letter below is from composer Aristides Strongylis.
World War 1 Centenary Tribute Concert Workshop
Travelling from Leipzig in Germany to the Academy on the Isle of Sheppey, Rémy Fichet (Leipzig Ballett Company), Ulrike Bernard, (Haus Steinstraße e.V, Social-Cultural Centre) and I were touched by our meeting with such open, eager and talented young people working to craft a music–dance performance to perform at the Academy.
Looking back to 1914 – remembering this time of war, it seems a fitting tribute to have a German-English collaboration for young people to create a production themselves. This first meeting between us (teachers/artists) and 20 students has been an amazing five days of work together.
The music compostion was a 6 minute song for piano, bass guitar, drums, triangel, trombone, saxophone, clarinet and voice which had strong invention, was emotional with a sometimes eerie atmosphere. During the first performance on Friday 28 February, the audience was visibly moved. I want to emphasise the music was composed and lyrics written by the students themselves.
The dance group developed and performed a 9 minute moving choreography on the subject of war. The faces of the 8 girls dancing shone as they really enjoyed the performance and were rightly proud.
Thank you to all the students who worked with patience. Reaching the final goal when creating a piece of art is not obvious at first. So it is important to remain open to learn to try new things. This our challenge. I hope that for some it may help to create a different view of music and dance. Let us all build on this unique opportunity to try more in music, dance and art in the future.

PARENTS /CARERS OF YEAR 11
IMPORTANT YEARBOOK MESSAGE
This year we are offering the opportunity for parents, carers and families to send a good luck/congratulations message to Year 11 students via the Yearbook.
Every year, a group of volunteer students get together to produce a lasting memory of school days which many students, parents and staff will cherish for years to come. This year we have been holding fund raising events to offset the price of professional printing to keep the cost to students as low as possible.
The latest initiative is a message page for parents, carers and families. For a small cost of just £5 you can buy a space in the book to wish your own son, daughter or family member good luck in the next stage of their journey into further education, training or employment.

CANTERBURY AND ENGLAND RUGBY GIVE OASIS ACADEMY ISLE OF SHEPPEY STUDENT A DAY TO REMEMBER AT TWICKENHAM
William McColl, Year 7 Abbey had a day to remember on Sunday 9 March 2014. He stood as one of 100 young people repre-senting their schools at the RBS 6 Nations England v Wales match at Twickenham and proudly wore the Academy’s brand new rugby shirt at its début reveal. William joined his peers and England Rugby’s official anthem singer, soprano Laura Wright in front of a sell-out crowd of 82,000 fans. Students had co-designed the shirts at Canterbury Kit Design workshops held across the UK in September and October last year. The workshops were part of All Schools, England Rugby’s programme to promote the sport and get more secondary state schools playing rugby, and of which Canterbury – the official kit supplier to England Rugby - is Official Partner. During the workshops the pupils learnt about the core values of the game and the importance of the rugby shirt before putting their thoughts and designs to paper. Just before kick-off students gathered on the pitch donning their shirts with Laura, also sporting her own self-designed be-spoke shirt she created at a workshop in her role as an Ambassador for All Schools. After accompanying Laura in the national anthem, the young people left the pitch and headed to their seats to sit back and enjoy the game, watching a victorious Eng-land beat Wales 29-18. We are delighted that William represented the Academy, its students and Sheppey Spartans at this event. He was a credit to us, the team, to himself and to his family. Well done William!
