Happy New Year!

New Year Resolutions

By Eliza Tutka

Resolutions are things, or promises, that you set your mind to do. For

example, my resolution is to make an act of kindness each day. Some other

resolutions are to get fit, help others, enjoy life, or take a trip, join the gym, or save

money. There could be a lot more resolutions that I don’t know of.

Do you have a resolution yet? You should make one if you don’t have one!

The Day of Love

By Kaylee Chase

There are a lot of hearts on this day,

because we care for each other all the way.

Page 3: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico

This is a day full of love and cheer,

and this happens every year.

Love is about caring for each other,

just like helping one another.

Sometimes boys give girls a big bouquet,

and maybe a box of chocolates on that day.

Love is what Valentine's Day is all about,

and you will have a great Valentine’s Day, no doubt!

My Birthday

By Eliza Tutka

My birthday was on January 6. On my birthdays I always have a lot of

people come to my house. On my eighth birthday my mom gave me a choice. I

could go to Kalahari for my birthday, or I could have a birthday party at my house.

I chose to have a birthday party at……. Kalahari! Since my sister was graduating

elementary school (she was going into fifth grade), my mom and my sister’s

friend’s mom thought we needed to celebrate. They asked us what we wanted to

do, a few days after I made my decision to go to Kalahari. I kept on saying that I

wanted to go to Kalahari, but my mom just kept ignoring me. At the end we

decided to go to Kalahari! They had a trip planned the whole time. My mom had

already packed the bag.

The next day it was time to go and I could not sleep the night before! I made

it through the night, and we had breakfast the next morning, and then it was time to

go. We were going in my car, with my mom and dad driving. In the other car

Sienna’s mom and dad were driving. Sienna is my sister’s friend.

Once we finally got there, we got in our rooms. We were so excited because

our rooms were right next to each other. I think the parents did that on purpose.

Once we got settled, we put on our bathing suits and we went on the elevator to the

water park. The water park was down stairs. Once we got there, we got so excited!

We ran. We didn’t actually run because we could get hurt, and the employees don’t

allow running. That didn’t slow us down. First we went on the baby slides to get

used to the slides, because we had never been here before. Then we went on some

of the bigger slides, like Elephant, Zebra, and some other ones… I don’t remember

their names. Oh yes, and the best one of all… Victoria Falls! That slide was

probably the best slide and my favorite slide. First you have little turns and then

there is a really big drop, and then it’s peaceful, and then there is another big drop.

Then there is this really big circle thing. You go in this really big circle and then in

Page 6: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico

that circle you go side to side. It’s really scary, but fun. We spent another day there

and then it was time to leave. As you can see, I had a great eighth birthday.

Husky

By Emma Fisher

I woke up and my room was all decorated. That is because it was my

birthday! First I checked under my pillow. I lost my tooth the other day and I got

$4 dollars! My mom put streamers and balloons all over my door. I had to duck so

I didn’t ruin her hard work. I ran upstairs and woke up dad by saying, “I got $4

from the tooth fairy!” He just nodded. My sister Sarah said, “Emma come down

stairs, there is a surprise for you!” I rushed down the stairs to find a box just sitting

there waiting for me to rip it open. Then the whole room was filled with a huge

“Rip!” Once I opened the box, I saw the cutest little stuffed husky ever. I checked

the tag…oh! It is a Beanie Boo. The name of the husky was “Slush” and it looked

Page 7: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico

cuter than my smaller Slush. Its eyes sparkled like magic, the nose was as black as

coal, and the fur was soft as a fluffy cloud. It is big as my other stuffed animal. I

was so happy!

The History of CUTENESS!

By Andrew Battaglia

Cuteness has been around for a long, long time. Have you ever wondered

where it was made? It was made in Japan. I bet everyone knows that! Japan is

famous for its cute culture. It is also famous for kawaii faces, which are made from

emoticons.

Cuteness is now everywhere in the world! There are toys, movies, stuffed

animals, and much more! They have a lot of kawaii stuff in Japan. Cuteness only

has a couple of eyes. They are really easy to draw. If it is too hard, you can look up

a step-by-step video.

If you ever go to Walt Disney World, in Epcot, they have a world showcase.

One of the countries there is Japan. In Japan, they have a shop with all cute things!

You can buy kawaii stuff too!

Once you are a master at drawing cute stuff, like me, you can start to make

your own YouTube drawing channel! Everyone can be an artist, like me. I can’t

make my own YouTube channel, but I still believe I am an artist!

Hachiko

Hachiko Statue at Shibuya Station

By Emily Federico

Hachiko was an Akita dog who was born on a farm near the City of Odate,

in Akita Prefecture, which is in Japan. Hachiko was born in 1923. He was raised

by Hidesaburo Ueno, a professor at Tokyo Imperial University. Professor Ueno

brought Hachiko home to live with him in Shibuya, Tokyo. Professor Ueno would

commute daily to work, and return home to Shibuya Station. Every day Hachiko

would be waiting for him at the station. Ueno and Hachiko would be there to greet

each other every day at exactly the same time for two years.

One day, in 1925, Professor Ueno was giving a lecture at the university and

he suffered a sudden illness and passed away. Hachiko still waited at the station to

greet Professor Ueno. Hachiko did not know his loving owner would never again

return.

Hachiko did not give up hope and remained loyal to Professor Ueno. The

dog continued to wait every day, like he used to, for Professor Ueno to greet him at

the station. For 9 years after the Professor’s death, Hachiko stayed in his usual

spot. Hachiko’s sad story began to circulate around Tokyo, and before long people

would travel to Shibuya station to visit Hachiko and feed him dog food and dog

treats and take care of his needs.

Hachiko became a kind of celebrity in Japan, as he became an example of

the Akita dog breed’s loyalty and intellect. One of the Professor’s former students

followed Hachiko one day, and learned about Hachiko’s story from one of the

Professor’s former gardeners. This student began to do research on Akita dogs and

found that purebred Akita dogs were almost an extinct breed. Because of

Hachiko’s fame, many believe the Akita breed became popular again.

Page 10: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico

Hachiko passed away in 1934, after an illness, but his story continued to be a

famous story in Japanese culture. Several books and films were created, based on

the story of Hachiko. There are several statues of Hachiko all across Japan. There

is a statue where the old Shibuya station stood, of Hachiko greeting Professor

Ueno, bringing them together again forever.

My Dog

By Nayeli Garcia

I have a dog and she is a Yorkie. Her name is Sandy and she is so cute. She

is 12 years old and even she thinks she is so cute… and she is. Whenever I put her

on top of the sink, or the shower, she pretends to swim. She is very smart! If you

look at her, she will start to bark for fun. I got her when I was born, so she has been

with me for my whole life. Whenever someone rings the doorbell, she will start to

bark like crazy. Her favorite game is “Sock Me”, which is a game my family made

up. We give her a sock and she will start to growl and chase after it. She is very

funny and I love her with all my heart.

My Guinea Pigs By Olivia Bisceglia

On Christmas morning my mom gave me a book about how to take care of

guinea pigs. I was really confused. My brother said that he saw something in the

playroom, so we walked over there. There was a blanket on top of something. I

lifted up the blanket and there was a guinea pig cage. I was so shocked! I said why

do we have this? My mom said it was because we were getting guinea pigs! Two

Page 11: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico

of them! I asked if there was going to be one for me and one for my brother? My

mom said no… they were both for me! I said when are we getting them? My mom

said tomorrow. I was so excited! The next day, on December 26, 2018, at 9:30

AM, we went out to find guinea pigs. First we went to Pet Smart, but there were no

any guinea pigs there. Then we went to Petco, and there were guinea pigs there!

We got treats, food, hay, and a hiding place, a bottle, chewing sticks, and bedding.

Then a lady brought out some female guinea pigs. I chose the two that I liked best

and then we went home. When we got to our house we got everything settled and

put the guinea pigs in the cage. I named them Twinkle and Holiday. I love them so

much!

Book Review: Harry Potter and the

Prisoner of Azkaban

Page 22: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico

By Katherine Yu

On Christmas, I got a whole set of Harry Potter books (1-7). So far Harry

Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was my favorite. In the first chapter, Harry was

awake, and it was midnight. He was writing an essay, which his least favorite

teacher, Professor Snape, had given him for homework. He was forced to do it at

midnight, because if any of the Dursley family heard his quill scratching, he would

find himself locked in the cupboard, under the stairs, for the rest of the summer.

Harry hates the summer vacation because he has to spend the whole summer with

the Dursleys. The next morning Ron, Harry's best friend at Hogwarts, called the

Dursleys and Uncle Vernon answered the phone. Ron screamed into the phone,

“HELLO---THIS IS RON WEASLEY! I WANT TO TALK TO HARRY

POTTER!! CAN YOU HEAR ME?’’ Harry heard that it was Ron's voice. Uncle

Vernon screamed back, “THERE IS NO HARRY POTTER HERE!” and then

hung up the phone. “HOW DARE YOU GIVE THIS NUMBER TO PEOPLE------

PEOPLE LIKE YOU?” Uncle Vernon shouted.

Ron realized that he got Harry into trouble, so he did not call again. Harry’s

other best friend from Hogwarts, Hermione Granger, had not been in touch either.

Harry thought Ron had warned Hermione not to call. Hermione was the cleverest

witch in Harry’s grade. She had muggle parents, and would probably have had

enough sense not to say that she was a friend from Hogwarts.

I really suggest you read the book, or watch the movie, because it’s a great

story with a lot of funny parts!

The Craziest Book Ever (An Original Story)

By Julianna Gore

My name is Jackson Avera. My class is having a book contest. Whoever

makes the best book from scratch, wins! This is how the day started.

“Good morning boys and girls!” Mrs. Fraros said. “Today we will be having a half

day.” And then three hours later we went home.

Back to the story I’m writing. I am very bad at writing! I guess I have to

write the first thing that comes to my mind. Alright…

Page 23: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico

Oh no! I didn't know I was such a bad artist! Let me try again. I will try to write an

animal story.

Ahhh! What if that thing stares at me when I sleep? I don't think I will ever win the

book contest. Let me try to draw an animal one more time!

Oh! I have an idea! The craziest book ever! My story will be the craziest book

ever!

The LOL Mystery!

By Amanda Tejada

Once there were five secret agents. Their names were 80s B.B, Babe in the

Woods, Sis Cheer, and Punk boy and Touchdown. They all were on a top secret

mission to look for the missing Lol.

Everyone was wondering who she was. So, 80s B.B. said to everybody, “Get

your gadgets, we are going on a mission in search of the unknown LOL.” They

made a plan to stay together at all times. Everyone got into the car and went off.

Page 24: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico

A few minutes later they stopped for food. Touchdown got hungry and wanted

burgers, so they stopped at The LOL Burger House. After they ate, they all got

back in the car and continued on their mission. They spotted a man walking by.

The man asked, “Are you looking for a missing LOL?”

“Yes!!” said Touchdown.

“I saw an LOL going into town a few minutes ago. She was wearing a red

handkerchief on her head, follow me I’ll show you the way!” the man answered.

So he took everyone into town. After walking for a long time up a hill, they

took a break. As they got closer to town, the man warned them that many people

wear red handkerchiefs, so it might be hard to find her. Everybody split up.

Two minutes later 80s B.B. said, “I found her! Can Do Baby, what are you

doing here?”

“I woke up and I said to myself where am I? Now I bumped into you guys!”

Editor’s Note: Several of our students took a stand about

bullying. Here are their articles and opinions….

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What Would you do if you saw Someone Being
Bullied?
By Bella Lin
Bullying is a big problem for many people. But there are 2 sides to it and
everyone has a different opinion of what to do.
Staying Out of It Some people think it’s better to stay out of the trouble. There’s a reason for
why they think that. What if it’s just a game? Would you be ruining their fun?
Page 25: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico
Others stay out of it because they don’t want to be the bully’s next victim. They are
afraid that the bully will bully them next. They could even become bullies if they
are getting bullied! Some people think it’s none of their business and there is no
point getting involved. Or they might think it would bring more attention to the
victim and they might not want that. They might get mad at you for not minding
your own business. If you were the victim’s friend, they probably wouldn’t want to
be your friend anymore. Another option is that the person who is being bullied
might not want you to be in the problem. All of those are what BYSTANDERS
do. A bystander watches the bullying, but doesn’t help. A bystander, who is the
victim’s friend, might stay quiet, but tell the victim in private that they are rooting
for him. Sometimes they only stay out of it because they don’t want to get
hurt. But that isn’t it. If they don’t tell a trusted adult what’s happening and
nobody else does either, the bullying will keep happening. Those are some of the
reasons some people would rather stay out of it.
Stepping in and Helping Other people think differently. They think bullying is NOT okay for anyone
to bullied, and they don’t see why people would bully others. What’s the point of
bullying? To hurt people’s feelings, and make them feel bad? You don’t exactly
have to stand up for them and yell at the bully, you could start off small and ignore
the bully. You should always say nice words to the victim to make them feel better
and not let them feel bad, or left out. If people are not sitting next to that person,
because the bully told everyone to be mean to the victim, you should try sitting
down next to that person and comfort him, or her. Even if the bully tries to bully
you, you should ignore the bully and act like you don’t know that the person who
is bullying is there! But you shouldn’t always help. You should only step in and
help when your safety is NOT at risk. Instead, you should just tell a trusted
adult. Many people don’t tell an adult because they think it’s tattling. Reporting a
bully is not tattling. Tattling is when you tell on someone to get them in trouble.
Those are all examples of an UPSTANDER. But what is an upstander? An
upstander is a person who stands up for the victim instead of just standing and
watching the bullying go on and on. Sometimes if you help the person who's
getting bullied, the bully might not bully you. It depends on the bully’s
personality. Most people just think bullies are mean, rough, nasty, or terrible,
horrible, or just bad. But every bully is different. Some are far more dangerous
than others and use punching, kicking etc. For other bullies, they use words,
laughing, threatening, and mean looks. Upstanders know that nobody deserves to
be bullied ever. That’s why people want to step in and help. Even a little change
can make a BIG difference.
My Opinion on Bullying Now that you know all about the 2 sides of the debate, I will tell you what I
think about bullying. I think you should step in and help, because bullying is
definitely not okay. You should try to bring it to a stop by stepping in and helping,
or telling a teacher/trusted adult. But of course I wouldn’t help when my safety is
at risk. I’d only help when my safety was not at risk. I think that you should help
because even if you might be bullied, you could ignore the bully and tell a trusted
adult. That is just my opinion of what to do if you see someone being
bullied. Think about your opinion and what you would do.
What Would you do if you saw Someone Being
Bullied?
By Amulya Bhandare
Bullying can affect people involved in many different ways. Here are some
opinions on dealing with bullying.
Staying Out of it Some people feel very bad for the victim, but don’t know what to do. If they
stick up for the victim, will the bully make them the next victim? That depends on
the bully. Other people think that if they stand up for the victim, the victim might
feel embarrassed and get mad at them, or everybody will start laughing at them.
One thing is that people that see bullying and just act like nothing happened
and don’t do anything, are called BYSTANDERS. What do you think about being
a bystander?
Stepping in to Help Stepping in to help is a great way to make friends and stand up for the
victim. I don’t mean getting physical with the bully. You can start with small and
simple steps, like ignoring the bully when he/she says something mean. You can
say nice things to the bully so they understand that you don’t care if they are trying
Page 27: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico
to discourage you. Also, they might say to themselves, “Being mean to this kid is
no use, there is not a tiny bit of impact on him/her.” If you really want to help, but
are a little afraid, don’t worry! You can still help. Of course you should never ever
risk your safety. You can always tell a responsible adult, that you trust. That is not
called tattling. Another thing I wanted to tell you, is that a person who stands up
for people who are getting bullied and always helps them stay strong, is called an
UPSTANDER.
My Opinion
Now that I have told you all of that, I will tell you my opinion. I think that
you should STEP-IN. If you don’t step in, the victim might think everybody is on
the bully’s side and that nobody cares. They can lose their confidence. But if you
step in, you can help out the victim and not let them lose their confidence and help
them stay strong. You can make the bully realize that the show has ended. One
more thing…helping and doing small and tiny acts, like picking up coins that fell
from somebody’s pocket and handing it back to them can continue all around the
world and one day that kindness may come back to you. In conclusion, bullying is
an act that can affect anyone big, or small. Everyone can have a kind heart.
What Would you do if you saw Someone Being
Bullied?
By Ivan Jin
Bullying is a very serious problem for many kids. For example, imagine
you’re walking down the hallway and you see your best friend being bullied by the
school bully, Mike. You feel bad for him, but you don’t feel like helping because
you’re afraid that you might get bullied too. Also, you might draw more attention
to the problem and it’s not your business.
Of course, you shouldn't risk getting involved if the bully is dangerous. But
Mike isn’t exactly dangerous. He’s an average sized boy. As with nearly all
Page 28: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico
bullies, his weapons are insults, mean looks, and shoving. Very often, you just
have to tell the victim of a bully a kind word, or be a friend to the victim.
I think you should step in because nobody deserves to be bullied. Another
reason why is that you will make a big impact on the person's life if you help.
What would you do?
Why Kids Should Play Outside
By Joseph Barracato
It is important to play outside even if it is cold. The first reason why kids
should play outside is because you get fresh air. Fresh air is important because it is
good for your lungs. Another reason why kids should play outside is because they
get exercise. Exercise is important because you will get strong. Another reason
why kids should play outside is because they can play with kids from different
classes. The fourth reason why kids should play outside is because it is more fun to
play outside than inside. The last reason why kids should play outside is because
sometimes kids get sick inside, because it is too hot. So dress warmly with a hat,
gloves, and a heavy jacket. Kids should dress warmly so they can play
outside! ___________________________________________________________________________
Ramadan!
By Rida Rizvi
Page 29: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico
Ramadan is a holiday that we Muslims celebrate in May. Some people don’t
know what Ramadan is, so let me tell you! Ramadan takes place in the ninth month
in the Muslim year. It is the holiest holiday, during which strict fasting is observed
from sunrise to sunset.
How it Works: To fast you have to wake up before dawn and eat food. Then
you go back to sleep, and when you wake up you are not allowed to drink or eat
anything until sunset. After sunset you are allowed to eat. This is a pattern for the
entire month. This is how Ramadan is celebrated!
Dybala
By Joan Grueso
Dybala is a very good soccer player. Dybala is a very, very fast soccer
player. Dybala’s full name is Paulo Bruno Dybala. Paulo Dybala’s height is
5’10”. Dybala was born in Laguna Larga, Cordoba, Argentina on November 15,
1993. He plays for two teams, Juventus and Argentina. Dybala’s number in
Argentina is 21, but in Juventus his number is 10. Dybala has a tattoo on his arm.
Dybala can make the ball go over somebody’s head. Ronaldo passed the ball to
Dybala and did a long rag shoot. Dybala can make the ball go through player’s
legs and pass it to a team mate like Costa. Costa can pass is it back to Dybala, so
he can cross it to somebody like Ronaldo. There is a game called FiFa19 and
Page 30: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico
Dybala is in it. Dybala did a side kick once, and it was close to being a goal kick!
Dybala made it.
Boo Fortnite!
By Shain Battaglia
I do NOT like Fortnite at all! I think it is the worst game. Why do people
play it if it is a viral shooting game! I know that there is no blood, but it is still
inappropriate. It is a bad game because you have to kill as many people as you can!
Page 31: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico
I have even heard of kindergarteners playing it! It is so inappropriate for 5-6 year
olds! When I looked on the app store, I saw this… “13+” and people in my class
say it is appropriate! It is for age 13+!
I think you should spend time with your family. I am sick of people
screaming “Fortnite rules”. Too much screen time is not healthy for you. So many
people seem to be addicted to it and sometimes forget other things that are
important! Another reason Fortnite is bad is that it might give away your personal
information! In my opinion, it is the worst game ever!
HOW TO MAKE
RAINBOW SWIRL BREAD
By Ariana Luisi
Page 32: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico
MAKES 1 loaf bread
PREP TIME 2 hours
COOK TIME 1 hour
Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 packet (¼ ounce) active dry yeast
1 cup whole milk at room temperature
1 large egg
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
2 tablespoons kosher salt
Food coloring (red, orange, yellow, and green, blue, purple)
1. In a large bowl, or a bowl of a stand mixer, whisk together flour, sugar, and
yeast. Add the milk, egg, butter, and salt and stir to combine.
2. If you are using a stand mixer, use the dough hook to knead the dough until
it becomes smooth and elastic to the touch, about 5-8 minutes. If you don’t
have a stand mixer, stir the ingredients to combine and knead the dough on a
clean floured surface and work it by hand until it is smooth and elastic, about
10 minutes. Set the dough in an oiled bowl and cover it with a towel. Let rise
in a warm, dark place for at least 45 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
3. Punch the dough down and cut it into six even pieces. On a plastic cutting
board (or any surface you’re willing to dye with food coloring), add a
different color of food coloring (about 4-5 drops, or so) to each ball of dough
and knead it until the color is fully incorporated. Use gloves to prevent your
hands from staining; if you prefer, change the gloves between colors to
Page 33: Bulldog Press - Island Trees School District v. Pico
prevent cross combination. After the color is consistent throughout the
dough, place the balls of dough into six small separate bowls and cover to let
rise another hour.
4. One at a time, remove each colored ball of dough and gently roll it into an
8x4 inch rectangle about ½ -inch thick. Stack the color rectangles on top of
one another and roll the dough up into a log. Lightly grease a 9x5-inch loaf
pan and set the dough into the pan. Let it rise another 45 minutes or until it
has doubled in size.
5. Heat the oven to 375 F and bake the dough for 35 minutes, or until it is
lightly browned. Remove the loaf from the pan and let it cool completely on
the rack.
Death Valley
Deserts are very dry and hot. It can reach 125 degrees Fahrenheit in the
region of U.S. The world's hottest desert is Death Valley California.
