December 2016 Edition

Dear Bulldog Families, It is hard to believe we are already in the month of December and first semester is coming to an end. Our teachers and staff are hard at work making sure your students are successful as we reach the final stretch. We ask your help in keeping our Bulldogs focused to make sure projects, assignments, and finals are taken seriously. Final exams are scheduled for December 20th and 21st. We want all of our Bulldogs to be successful and even though the Winter Break is close, there are still several opportunities for learning and assessments before grades are final.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the Edmond Memorial families and community for the support you give the school. This support is evident through our community partnerships, booster clubs, parent groups and the Memorial Parent Organization. This tradition of support each year is one of the many reasons Edmond Memorial remains the best! Despite funding issues in our state, Edmond Memorial continues to provide our students with the best learning and extracurricular opportunities due to the support you give. Taste of Memorial was a great success Thank you to all the restaurants, businesses organizations, volunteers and patrons of the 6th annual Taste of Memorial. This year proved to be the largest Taste of Memorial in every way. There were more restaurants, silent auction donations, volunteers and patrons. EMHS student athletes sold over 1600 tickets and over 850 people attended. Those attending sampled food from thirty-seven restaurants, bid on the almost one hundred auction items available, and raised more than previous years for the Bulldog student athletes. Over six years, Taste of Memorial has raised over $160,000 for the student athletes at EMHS.

EMHS invited to OCU press conference scenarios

The Bulldog newspaper class, led by Mrs. Nieves, had a great opportunity with OCU to participate in a press conference scenario. Our Bulldogs were the only school invited to participate within the metro! Go Dogs!

Media Center has a number of activities for students Students are invited to attend monthly book club meetings held in the EMHS Library Media Center. The meetings take place on the last Tuesday of each month during both lunch periods. Students bring their lunches and discuss the selected title. During the meetings, there are also book trivia questions, prizes, and treats. Due to Winter Break, the December meeting will be held on December 20th. The title for this month is Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. The book for January is Shift by Jennifer Bradbury. Club Make meets once a month in the EMHS Library Media Center. This club emphasizes students being creators rather than consumers. Students that participate in Club Make create things and work together to solve problems. Some activities include sewing, robotics, cooking, woodworking, electronics, digital arts, mechanical repair, etc. Club Make will meet twice in December. On December 6th, students will work together to create a working piano keyboard (think of the piano in the movie, Big). We are excited to have students create this project and use it in the library! The following week, on December 13th, students will learn the skills to sew their own Bulldog pillows. The planned activity for January 24 involves creating your own “Superhero” letters. Meetings will take place in the EMHS Library Media Center between 2:30-4:30pm. All students are welcome to participate in Club Make.

Thursday, November 17th, 2016 the

EMHS Library Media Center hosted the 2

nd Annual Mini-Comic Con. About 70

students from around the district were in attendance, learning in the many breakout sessions, participating in the Smash Brother Tournament & Marvel Universe Jeopardy and creating superhero crafts in the Make & Take sessions. A highlight of the evening was

the ability to purchase a customized green screen poster for $10. Plans are already being made for next year’s Comic Con, so stay tuned! The week of November 28th to December 2nd, the EMHS Library Media Center hosted the 6

th annual Scholastic Book Fair. The

book fair is an opportunity every year for students to be exposed to new literature and win great prizes as well as shop for their favorite books. The library takes all profits earned in books and these books are given back to students through contests throughout the year.

The end of first semester is just a few weeks away and we are having a great time learning and growing in the Freshman Academy! Please continue to encourage your student to do their

best these last few weeks and to finish strong! As stated earlier this year, every grade and daily attendance matters! Students will be taking semester exams on December 20th (odd exams) and December 21st (even exams) of this year. These exams are worth 20% of your student’s final grade in all classes, so nightly preparation and review for these exams is vital. It is the time of year where winter sports and concerts fill the calendar with numerous opportunities to come out and support our Bulldogs. We love seeing you

at these events and know your students appreciate your attendance and constant support! If your student is attending evening games and concerts, please remember to pick them up promptly when these events end. We have greatly enjoyed getting to know your amazing children so far this semester. They are a remarkable group of young men and women and it is an honor to serve them every day. As always, do not hesitate to call or email with any questions or concerns. We hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season. Sincerely, Debreon Davis, Freshman Principal Kay Moore, Freshman Counselor

BULLDOG NEWSLETTER December 2016 Page 12

Would you believe what a difference a pie can make? Well, we found out on Friday, November 18th when we provided every EMHS employee with a pie. That's 194 pies! It was amazing and profoundly humbling to see them walk out with a pie in their hand, a smile on their face, and a spring in their step - and sometimes, tears in their eyes. It was quite a surprise for those who thought they were coming in for a slice of pie, only to walk out with a whole pie of their choice! Watching their faces and their attitudes instantly be lifted was worth more than a pie - it was simply priceless. The cost of a pie is less than $15, and we believe our teachers are worth more than that. If a pie can make that much of a difference, think what a difference it would make for their classroom and instructional needs to be met! It should be no secret that our school and our teachers have tremendous needs - and the MPO would like to meet those needs, rather than have our teachers pay out of their pocket or go with-out. The MPO was recently able to write a $2,500 check to the school to enhance their Activity Fund account, which will help pay for Professional Development and miscellaneous other school needs. That money will run out quickly. Would you consider donating towards our Bulldog Campaign to add to that $2,500 and also to our Spring Teacher Grants? You have until December 31st to donate towards this year's budget. Your donation of any size is greatly appreciated. Many, many thanks to the wonderful Bulldog parents who stepped up to the plate to make this monumental pie event happen! It was a last minute decision and one that we truly believe was the right one and we couldn't have done it without the support and generosity of our parents.

We hope your holidays are filled with family, friends, and love. We look forward to 2017! Dot and Lisa MPO Co-Presidents
